And finally, this is John Jackson Miller's fulfillment of Jude Terror's request for comment regarding Rich Johnston's recent Twitter beef with Tom Brevoort over muh sales charts:

>I fully understand what Tom is referring to, as I have spoken to this point many times: the figures are certainly not a complete representation of all copies circulating in all markets. We don’t claim that they are. Rather, they estimate a specific thing: the number of copies Diamond shipped to its North American accounts in the calendar month.

>Those estimates do appear to be accurate, in that they conform with other information at our disposal; after after 2003 when the switch from preorder to Final Order reporting happened, the independent estimates by Comichron, CBR, and ICV2 converged. In a sense, we’re checking one another’s work, every single month.

>We also have a further aid in that we know from information Diamond has made publicly available the total number of copies shipped to North American accounts each month. Diamond provides monthly, year-to-year, and year-to-date percentage change figures every month for comics unit sales, and has also reported its overall sales on occasion (such as 98 million such copies in 2015 and 10.28 million copies in August 2016). Those two figures comport with one another precisely in the matrix of percentage-changes, as do other announced numbers; the monthly overall units figure Comichron reports is just a matter of algebra. This overall figure provides a further independent backstop, because adding all the Top 300 sales together tends to arrive at about 91% of the overall total, suggesting the rest are outside the Top 300.

>So the comics-Diamond-shipped-in-the-month-to-North-America numbers are reliable and replicable measures, and worth reporting since they generally represent the lion’s share of print copies in circulation when it comes to periodicals; we just simply don’t say they’re everything (and certainly not with regard to graphic novels). Comichron’s ranking pages are quite specific in this regard, both in headings and the fine print sections at left, and we also have FAQ pages on what is and is not included in the figures Diamond is reporting. Such pages are here — http://www.comichron.com/faq.html — and here http://blog.comichron.com/2009/03/diamond-charts-primer-what-they-are-and.html. I’ve also written recently about the size of British sales and why historically they’ve never been included — and why to be of most use to the intended audience, Diamond’s North American retailers, it is probably advisable to keep them separate: http://blog.comichron.com/2016/11/primer-uk-and-europe-comics-sales-and.html

>And this is the important thing to remember: since indexed sales charts began appearing in 1984, the intended audience for them has always been retailers, allowing them to gauge their sales levels on titles relative to the national average. Including anything beyond what it ships to North American comics shops makes the charts of lower utility in that regard; that’s why the inclusion of Loot Crate data was problematic, since it made the charts less a direct reflection of comic shop ordering.

>On the other hand, one of the reasons consumers turn to estimates like ours is because they have a legitimate interest in knowing the minimum number of copies in circulation, in order to incorporate supply in secondary market decisions. Greater real-time transparency about supply certainly would have helped avoid some of the negative speculator market effects of the early 1990s. Quite a lot of Comichron’s traffic comes from collectors searching for initial supply data on comics both current and many years old. And we’ve long known that publishers themselves take an interest in what minimum sales levels are on one another’s titles, for their own planning purposes; much of the early “magic number” estimating of the Diamond and Capital City charts in the 1980s and early 1990s were done by publishers themselves, Marvel included.

>These are the uses this statistic is best suited for, and which I most encourage; I ensure that Comichron pays very little mind to the “horse race” elements and almost no attention to cross-time trends on individual titles, for which the noisy comics-shipped data is less well suited. As Tom — and many other publisher representatives — have said before, the portion of sales reported by Diamond is only one factor in the health or future of an individual title, and not necessarily always the decisive one. There’s no way to prevent others from putting the numbers to such uses — but all our caveats are there to be read and reprinted wherever the figures appear.

>And should publishers start regularly releasing more inclusive data, we will certainly publish that as well, alongside the North American shop figures that remain most relevant to retailers. Both would be of interest to a wide audience, particularly future comics historians.

I don't think the industry is dying, but I think we are headed for a downturn. Comics have always had ups and downs, and sales for the past few years have been going up and up.

In the floppies, yes. Trades are selling better and better every year. Just imagine though, how terrible this year would've been for floppies if DC hadn't relaunched.
I think we could see very big trade numbers in January. DC really fucked up, they should've released some of the trades on Christmas and New Year. Also I hope they do some promotion for Rebirth trades, which I haven't seen much lately.

GL doing worse is not surprising. Johns was in the ending of his 8+ year run of GL so going from that to Venditti who most people are not liking already, doesn't translate well for his new book for sales.
>>
>>88372707
Both are minority and Giffen is on Blue Beetle. New Super-Man could realistically hover around 20k + for a while before dipping in the dangerous territory. Pray the trade sells for that book is big. Giffen being on Blue Beetle means it would at least last for 2 years, no matter how shit the sales get.
>>

So, What if the big 2 only keep the trades and makes all of their books just digitals since the floppies are dying? Would that actually works?

THERE ARE NO ADS IN TRADES AND DIGITALS.

How can you people not comprehend this?
>>
>>88372341
Most of RHATO audience are only reading digital ver and some are waiting for the trade.

Supergirl isn't going to be a bigger seller no matter how hard DC is trying.

Batgirl is simply boring and TT is a dying franchise and putting Damian in it didn't help.

Though, I do think that DC shouldn't continue with double shipping for long.
>>
>>88372908
Digital is like 10% of floppies

And there are no ads on digital

And they have to split the earnings with like a thousand other companies

So no it wouldn't work

f disney and wb made a site like comioxlogy that they wouldn't have to share and dc and marvel would get all the profits is like the only thing that would be somewhat profitable
And they don't care about comics, and the cost of ruining such a site would probably be quite expensive and not worth it

RHATO is suffering from Lobdell's previous garbage.

Supergirl - TV show never translates to comic sales (even Flash needed Rebirth plot to be successful)

Batgirl needs to be crippled already

Teen Titans - Nobody cares about Damian's whiny life.

There were hints of that. This was from January of this year, months before Rebirth:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/01/27/retailers-complain-about-collapsing-marvel-and-dc-sales/

Retailers Complain About Collapsing Marvel And DC Sales

Vernon Wiley of The Comix Gallery in Illinois writes to a retailer-only board (reproduced here with permission),

"Today I was looking for some feedback from those of you that have experienced a large shift in the big two’s sales as of late. While Marvel’s sales are ok, this has been truncated by the avalanche of product thats been sent to us this season. While I was a big DC store for over fifteen years, they have dramatically fell to third place here in about a year"

"It seems to me that Marvel is doing “carpet bombing” of all available dollars we and our customers spend, while DC doesn’t seem to have much of a clue on publishing popular comics. Now I realize some of you have shops that are pretty much mainstream and in high traffic tourist type areas that perhaps haven’t been affected much. Here though, the big 2’s sales have fallen off, and despite the gaps in publishing picked up by indie labels, hasn’t been enough to counter it in sales dollars."
>>
>>88373189
>>88373206
All of the B-lister books are doing around 50k to 30k. His fans literally have nothing to worry about.
>>
>>88373320
"Are any of your experiences similar? My shop has been open for over twenty years now, and I’ve never seen anything like this. I am hoping the heads at these publishers see the numbers and the way they are trending for many of us, and perhaps take some corrective measures. Phil, whose chain perhaps exemplifies health, has written frequently about their practices and long term outlook. I can’t imagine when a businessperson of his skill warns of declining cash flow for many of us that I am alone here. Perhaps. I’ll be awaiting February sales numbers from Diamond to see if this trend develops nationwide."

"So please chime in with your experiences and solutions on Marvel and DC’s long term efforts to right this ship. If of course, you believe the ships need guidance."
>>
>>88373346
Cliff Biggers of Dr No’s in Georgia concurred, elaborating upon is response for Bleeding Cool,

“We’re seeing the worst falloff of Marvel and DC sales in the store’s 38-year history."

"Both companies are losing established readers who no longer feel that the company’s output reflects the sort of comics they enjoy. Stories are lackluster, unfocused, and excessively long as companies think in terms of collected editions, not individual issuees. The tone is mostly dark and uninviting."

"Deadpool and Harley Quinn are still very good sellers, showing that comics readers enjoy some funny in their “funny books”–but even those titles have softened a little bit because of character fatigue."

"The DC books generating the most excitement right now are Superman: Lois & Clark, Swamp Thing, and Justice League of America–three books that most closely evoke the tone and attitude of classic pre-Flashpoint DC (and two of those are written by veteran creators who worked on those books in the pre-Flashpoint days). These books look great and are excellent, entertaining reads."

"My Marvel readers are complaining about art this isn’t what they expect from a Marvel book. Cartoony art, manga-influenced art, quirky art… the concept of a house style is gone. The books that generate the most interest are books like Doctor Strange, All-New X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man, and (of course) Star Wars & Darth Vader–books that mix strong stories and great art."
>>
>>88373333
>50k to 30k
You are being generous because they will all fall to 40k-30k next month.
>>
>>88373372
"For the first time in store history, yesterday’s Marvel FOCs saw us ordering single digits on more than half of the line items in the Marvel section. Now, to be fair, that includes collected editions and 2nd printings, which boosted that single-digit title count, but it still included an inordinate number of ongoing titles. As recently as five years ago, there were no Marvel Universe titles that sold in the single digits for us. Quirky concept books like Starbrand & Nightmask or Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur stumbled out of the gate for us."

"The most disturbing trend involves established readers who have sufficient disposable income that they can afford to buy what they like to read. A significant portion of these readers are trimming their title lists by 50% or more because they don’t enjoy the current output. When a dedicated DC customer who was buying EVERY New 52 title in 2011 and 2012 is now buying no DC titles, or a dedicated Avengers/Captain America/Iron Man/Thor customer has dropped all of these series, it’s troubling."

"We WANT Marvel and DC to succeed. We WANT to sell these books. We are NOT a preorder-only store–we order every title from Marvel and DC (as well as IDW, Image, Dark Horse, Dynamite, Boom, Valiant, Oni, AfterShock, and many other publishers) FOR THE SHELVES. But right now, the retailing challenge for many Marvel and DC is finding an eager audience for these new titles–and finding satisfying titles for established readers who enjoy classic DC and Marvel.”

It's not that they are doing bad, anon. They are just not improving.

I at least hoped that Rebirth relaunch will improve the sales, but oh well.
>>
>>88373711
I mean, I understand why they would be low. Foolkiller, like Slapstick and Solo, were never going to be high sellers. They probably based the copies ordered on how their Mercs for Money sales. Same with Ultimates 2 where they probably knew that no one that wasn't already reading Ultimates was going to care about it, so they just ordered slightly above what Ultimates would usually sell.

In fact, you see this with Champions, too. The Champions #2 sales are pretty much in-line with the ANAD Avengers sales were when it as cancelled. Meaning people aren't falling for the relaunch hype anymore and are just ordering the same copies of the books getting relaunched as before.

Which on one hand means that Marvel might back off of the seasonal model. But then the Top 10 is still filled with Marvel #1s so maybe not.

"Good" is an exaggeration. Anything around 15k at Marvel or 10k at DC is as good as cancelled unless.

Anything above 25k at Marvel and 20k at DC is good. Those ones, as long as they keep those numbers consistent, aren't in danger of getting cancelled. It's when you fall into the 15-20k range and 10-15k range that the cancellation starts rapidly approaching.

A lot of people were under the mistaken impression that the industry was on a huge upswing by how well Rebirth was doing for the first few months, but now the Rebirth hype is starting to settle and Marvel is back to their usual antics. Marvel is doing a little bit worse than usual and DC is doing a little better than usual, but these sales are still getting dominated by Batman, events and #1s with a lot of the quality books on all sides lingering down in the sub-30ks.

Basically, the problem isn't that sales are BAD. They aren't. It's that NOTHING CHANGED.

>>
>>88373827
#1 sales never actually matter beyond as a judge of what the maximum it'll sell is in most cases. What you should be looking for is what the settling point is for sales. Let's see where it is around issue 4, by which point it should have settled if it isn't hemorrhaging readers each issue... which it probably will with how garbo it is.
>>
>>88373947
>Rebirth is bleeding more readers than New 52. The only reason it looks slower is because it's double shipped.

Wouldn't this be the opposite? If you're counting it by months then of course the double shipped is going to have more losses. How does it look on an issue to issue basis?
>>
>>88373777
Marvel needs to stop pussyfooting around with their seasonal approach if they're going to continue writing for trades either go all in or stop doing it. turn the entire line into a series of miniseries or stop slapping arbitrary #1s on issue #19s
>>
>>88373777
>But then the Top 10 is still filled with Marvel #1s so maybe not.

Depends though, the reason they didn't relaunch all titles for Marvel Now 2.0 is likely because the relaunching didn't help sales for All-New All-Different. A lot of stuff dropped back to their previous sales level with the second and third issues.

If the #2-4s drop very drastically for the Marvel Now 2.0 launches, then they'd probably back off the seasonal model more.

Just think, if one variant in Loot Crate was enough to get Big Trouble in Little China at the top of the chart, imagine what two variants in the Stan Lee Box could do!
>>
>>88374010
I think the issue is that they don't have a core of books that DON'T get relaunched. I think people would be way more receptive to the "6-12 issue stealth minis getting released annually" thing if the core books (your Amazing Spider-mans, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Uncanny X-men, etc.) would go years without relaunching.

I actually like the idea of a "seasonal model" because it gives characters that otherwise would never get a chance at least a mini's worth of content with the potential of more than that. But then the issue comes up when you're constantly relaunching the books that collectors should feel safe in investing in.
>>
>>88374201
Not much, because less people will get the Stan Lee Box. It's like twice as expensive as Loot Crate and isn't very well known since it's just starting.
>>
>>88374221
I think the problem is that they've effectively devalued the numbering due to so many relaunches in the last 20 years. People on here used to claim the numbering doesn't matter, but I think the sales have shown it actually does; when you have too many #1s, who really cares at that point?

Who are they complaining about, the Allreds? New generations of comics artists are coming in all the time, I'm sure plenty of people hated the Lee/McFarlane/Liefeld craze back in the day.

Newsflash, idiots: MANGA SELLS. Don't be surprised if publishers try to put out books with a more manga-styled look to snap up some of that audience.

Is it lack of advertising? for example anime for the most part tries to adapt the manga, of course there are cases where it has an anime original ending or just original stuff but 80% it's faithful. So maybe it gets people interested in those series enough to read the books?

A lot of stuff takes a while to develop. Busiek said this back in the mid-90's and reposted it in 2009:

http://busiek.com/site/2009/06/21/comics-as-a-mass-medium/

>A little more on the subject of bookstore distribution—Gary mentions in his address to retailers at Atlanta that we’re still waiting for that breakthrough, and that “everyone’s tried to crack the bookstore market and no one’s succeeded.” I think he’s wrong, because he’s looking for a breakthrough, a moment when the floodgates open and comics are suddenly, magically accepted by all. That didn’t happen, even in Japan, and it’s not going to happen here. The growth of the Japanese marketplace into adult acceptance took twenty years, and they started with a healthy children’s marketplace. We started with a ghettoized industry, so the fact that we’ve accomplished what we have in the last ten years is impressive. The gates opened a crack, a decade ago, and a toehold was established. Since then, comics have been trickling into bookstores against entrenched resistance. But there are more comics there today than there were then, and in many bookstores, graphic novels have been moved out of the humor section and into a graphic novel section, usually positioned next to the SF/fantasy section.
>>
>>88376674
>People at DC tell me that their trade paperback program is growing, doing steadily better in that uncrackable bookstore market. That’s not a breakthrough of the sort we all hoped for, but it is progress. That handful of trade paperbacks in the humor rack expanded into enough to justify their own rack. And when and if that rack does enough business to justify divorcing it from the SF/Fantasy section, that’ll happen too.

And he actually was right, if you remember what it was like in 90's bookstores and compared it to the last 20 years there's a vast difference in how many graphic novels were carried.

Back in the 90's you'd see like maybe 10 graphic novels from DC and Marvel put somewhere in the SF/fantasy section. By the 00's Borders and Barnes and Noble devoted a whole shelf to them, or more. Back then you wouldn't think that non-Marvel/DC graphic novels would get stocked (usually it'd maybe be Maus or something) but it's common at Barnes and Noble now.

The only problem is that no one in the 90's saw Amazon and the internet becoming what it became. So now bookstores are struggling even though graphic novels are doing better.
>>
>>88376544
>Are the bimonthly are really hurting them?
Yes, because they appear slower in comparison and the double shipping are taking a lot of the budget despite the 2.99 price.
>>
>>88376544
>Are the bimonthly are really hurting them?
I guess it could speed up whatever natural decline there would already be. 5.98 a month on one book might be more than people are willing to spend when they can just trade wait.

>>
>>88376546
Key word there is adapt. Anime audience is made up of manga readers and the anime-only crowd. If you read the manga can pick at the differences in the source material and complain about filler and the cool stuff they cut. If your first exposure is the anime you can pick up the manga if you want more stories about the characters you just watched.

Cartoons and movies based on comics are almost entirely new material. Some schmuck has a story they want to tell and they use corporate IP to do it. So you end up with these movies/cartoons/animated shorts with just these colossal differences from the source material.

So they can't advertise it as an adaptation and make easy money by doing a bundle deal with a blu-ray and a trade

Why don't comics adapt the magazine format japanese manga has?

For example, DC releases a bi-monthly another monthly and whatever else magazine with a bunch of titles. People buy those magazines and then buy volumes for the series they like.

It's a good way to advertise less popular comics or new ones if you put them together with best sellers like Batman for example. Or would that be way too expensive?

No, because comics are a medium. You can like movies/TV and not like comics because they're completely different mediums.

Comics as a MEDIUM is respected in Japan. Just because people like the cape GENRE doesn't mean they're going to give a fuck about comics as a medium when they can just get their cape genre fix from all the movies/TV shows.

There is, but those sales are reflected in the trade market. Not via the direct market, and definitely not floppies. So yes, movies are resulting in increased sales, but those sales aren't going to be showing up on any of these charts because these are the charts for traditional comic readers.
>>
>>88376889
>Or would that be way too expensive?

Most likely that. If anthologies actually sold well, Dark Horse Presents, Island, and Cinema Purgatorio would sell a lot better than they currently do. And if your intent is making a monthly anthology magazine that sells on the newsstand, the comic companies would also have to deal with returns which could eat into profit.

Yeah, Hastings closing was a major blow to Diamond and by association, diamond-distributed publishers. Apparently Diamond has been calling in a bunch of delinquent accounts to make up for the loss in revenue from Hastings' closing, and as a result, it's potentially going to cause a bunch of LCS to be closing in the next couple years.

Diamond had some leeway with paying your account, because they figured you'd have to pay up at some point, and there was enough leeway to go easy on delinquent accounts because other stores compensated for them and the loss of the store because they couldn't pay up that month would hurt more in the long-run. But with Diamond getting more strapped for cash as one of their biggest (if not THE biggest) accounts closing down, they didn't have this leeway anymore and had to start calling in all of their debts to compensate. Well, all those delinquent account LCSs that couldn't pay their bill before certainly can't pay it now that Diamond is going "you have a month to reup or we're cutting you off" so they will almost certainly end up having to close.

>Not sure what you're trying to imply. 5.3k

This is a Marvel books, secon issues and volume sales take a huge dip
>>
>>88377339
They hate money
>>
>>88377634
That's true for DC and Image as well senpai.
>>
Full solicits next week?
>>

RH has been only losing 5k monthly since #2 which is honestly impressive because the others have been losing 10k.

NSM is the book I'm really worried about and hopefully Kenan appearing in Superman will help with sales.
>>
>>88377339
because the shit doesn't sell, anthologies haven't just become a thing they've always been around.

you see one every year in the Annual issue, back when Marvel heroes could support 4 weekly hero books you see them in the form of the Unlimited books to fill 5th week gaps.

even the essentials line and digest for Runaways and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane was created to see if readers would tolerate books printed in the absolute cheapest way possible.

They read more PRINT in general and it's because Japanese society, at large, is basically computer illiterate. The population there just like to buy print.

Japan is just not comparable to the US market in any way.
>>
>>88378384
Huh, this is actually interesting to know. Thanks.
>>
>>88378098
It's going to depend on how Tomasi will write him.

The crossover would have forced fans to give it a try.
>>
>>88372773
That's one part of the latter title's premise.

>>88372822
The Lost Boys is the only Vertigo title with a 5-digit sale figure there, and is outsellig some mainline DC minis such as Suicide Squad Most Wanted Vol. 2.

>>88377396
You are too harsh anon.

>>88377775
Yes

>and finally, all those suggestions for American comics to adopt the Japanese manga magazine format
Every fucking time.

>9. Moon Knight Vol. 1 Lunatic (Marvel) - 3,742
Cool.
>208. Vision Vol. 1 Little Worse Than Man (Marvel) - 663
Did the Vision one come out a month ago or something?

>THERE ARE NO ADS IN TRADES AND DIGITALS.
Not right now.

Honestly, I'd be cool with trades having ads, and then hardcover "premium" collections, etc. without ads.

Just put an ad between each issue.
I'd not be ok with ad formatting as it is now, but with some reworking, I don't see the problem.
Throw on another reduction in price and bingo.

>Lower sales
>Even with the weaboo artist.

Its happening!
>>
>>88377699

Difference being that DC and good Image books have better sales to begin with.
>>
>>88380705
Vision vol 1 came out like 5 months ago
Did you not see Vision vol 2 right above Moon Knight?
>>
>>88377634
The overwhelming majority of trades don't get a second and third month anon
And if they do its at 300-500
Only image books by salty ex big two writers and well known Batman trades do better than that
>>
Do these numbers take into account digital?
If not they are completely pointless.
>>
>>88381765
Higher ups tell us these sales aren't very representative all the time or are just a piece of the pie but we still bitch all the same.
>>
>>88373295
>RHATO is suffering from Lobdell's previous garbage.
Am I'm the only one who like nu52 RHatO?
>>
>>88381765
Digital is almost meaningless. It accounts for maybe 10% of all sales and the actual numbers aren't made available to the public
>>
>>88381876
I liked it
>>
>>88381907
You need to source your 10%.
Anyone can throw out random numbers.
>>
>>88382032
You're right.
I meant it was between 6.46% and 9.28% of sales
>>
>>88382112
The last mention we've had of how how digital compares to physical, is that it's around "10-20%" with some selling better or worse digitally. This statement was made years ago, and digital sales have only increased since then.
>>
>>88374436
Does that mean no more 60-80's reprints?
If so, I care, otherwise, I would not even notice.
>>
>>88375029
>Mana sells
Citation needed in the current year. The Manga sections in every bookstore I frequent have only grown smaller.
>>
>>88382442
Manga sales in Japan dwarf comic sales in America. Manga sales in America dwarf US comic sales in Japan
