Some of the production background stuff from Pacific Rim noted that the slow and ponderous movements give giant beings a proper sense of weight and aid in suspension of disbelief, as large animals in real life move slowly unless necessary. However since slow movements make for terrible fight scenes del Toro got around that by making the establishing shots and lead-ups to the fights slow but speeding their movement in the actual fight scenes. The only fight scene that doesn't have have the Jaegers or Kaiju moving in slow motion is the Striker Eureka/Mutavore fight.
