I think they're putting him in as much of the marketing as they are (which isn't heavily Vader-centric but the trailers do make a point of showing him) because he's a safer bet. Vader gets people excited and in a movie that has a cast made up almost entirely of characters that are new or not well known to mainstream audiences, it's easier for them to slap Vader on something.

It could never work. Half KOTOR takes place on the Outer Rim which wasn't colonized or mapped. Hyper drive would have to be slow or non-existent. The Sith only fought the Jedi once and won before destroying themselves. The major lore breaking element is KOTOR not understanding the Jedi or Force.
