Super late idiot here but I just realized Star saying "You underestimated me" and getting mad, from Banagic, also fits in with her calling herself "Star the Underestimated" based on her mother's view. Obviously people pointed out over a year ago that Star not wanting to be underestimated can be connected with her not wanting to be "saved" at the Blood Moon Ball, but it didn't hit me that that theme was continued in the second season.

They're doing a better job than I would've initially given them credit for at making nearly all the episodes feel cohesive, even though it's pretty likely they never had a strict plan for the series until comparatively recently.

It just seems pretty likely to me that whoever storyboarded that part (most of the people who worked on Banagic aren't with the show now) just thought it'd be funny to end it with a joke about Star getting mad (haha), because the first season had an excessive amount of hugging and apologizing at the ends of episodes and so that was kind of a twist. Then whoever wrote the "Star the Underestimated" line in season two had probably gone back to that episode and thought it'd work to use that specific word re: her feelings about Moon.

Speaking of, do you guys think Toffee will ever come back? He seemed way to underutilized despite his development and was killed off rather unceremoniously.

I know Ludo's only just on the rise as a serious threat but Toffee only came along halfway into season one and took over. Think they'd do it again?

I don't know about that anon, given what we know of Daron and her past focus on the Star vs. idea, even if it was in a different form before it became an actual show, it would make sense that Daron had much of the story and themes within it figured out. Star's issues with being underestimated are likely to have been a big element that was underlined to the crew, just like Marco's social awkwardness and over-safe tendencies.

The differences between the first and second season are noticeable though. A theory I've always liked in regards to that is the notion that, given Daron's new to the industry, the first season of Star vs. was likely altered by Disney to be a bit more in-line with their past shows, hence the greater number of episodes revolved around Echo Creek Academy.

With season 2 and even season 3 secured early in the development cycle it likely allowed Daron to go back to her original plans on how the show would work, hence the shift in tone, events in episodes and characters who show up.

However, regardless of this change it is likely that the key themes of the characters and their story lines to develop those themes remained somewhat intact from the initial planning, hence instances such as the one you described in season 1 coming up in season 2 in greater depth.

It's not the sense of being underestimated itself that got me; just the similarity of the words used. The main characters' personalities are definitely really consistent (Star seemed a bit dumber in early season 2 but that didn't seem to stick).

I also think some of the school episodes and stock characters were the ideas of the first-season co-executive producers. I might actually be too harsh on them because for all we know they were really responsible for the best things about that season, but either way I don't miss Marco's friends or Brittney.
