I think everyone misses the old adventure episodes. Townie episodes are fine in moderation, story episodes are fine too, but the old "explore this exotic location to defeat a corrupted gem/find an artifact" aspect feels totally gone now.

I hope that as the show goes on, if they don't bring the adventure episodes back, they at least make the townie episodes tie into the rest of the show better. Lately it feels less like we're watching a single SU show, and more like we're watching "Steven and Friends" followed by "Steven and the Crystal Gems."

The last "comfy" episode I liked was like... Steven Floats. Over a season ago.

Gem Harvest tried, and only showed how much worse the show has gotten. I mean, you have a quiet pastoral atmosphere with the barn, a situation where all the characters are just being chill around each other, a message about family and other gay shit; it's basically automatically comfy, right? Totoro-type shit. But none of that matters if the writing and animation are half-assed. No one on the crew seems to give a crap anymore.

To be fair, January ended on a particularly high note, one of the highest of the series. It was a week of solid plot-heavy episodes with a brand new Crystal Gem, which was huge.

What I find unreasonable is your assumption that, because you believe the show is "a mess" right now, you think the rest of the show will be exactly the same so you can "see how the mess ends". Your complete lack of faith in the crew to write more good episodes despite having delivered in places such as the January bomb is downright strange, and overly pessimistic, especially when there are already aspects of the show that have yet to be expanded on, for example what's gonna happen to Jasper. There are lots of routes the show has yet to take, and we haven't even seen Homeworld yet.

No, not really. A lot of TV shows get worse with time, it's a thing that happens. Especially considering SU was a show that was holding back on revealing its bigger plot for most of the first season, and the plot is precisely one of its messiest aspects. Seasons 1 and 2 were mostly building things up; season 3 was a lot of paying off, done poorly. There was also likely a long time between writing Message Received and writing Three Gems and a Baby, and there's a whole number of factors that could have made the show drop in quality during that time span. Yes, the crew has delivered plenty of good episodes in the past, but that doesn't mean they'll keep on doing so. The downward spiral has been pretty consistent and linear.

I don't care about what happens if it's done poorly. Give me one amazing townie episode (if such a thing is possible) over ten shitty lore-based ones.

We're only 9 episodes in to a 25/26 episode season, and as far as we know the next episode could be a major game changer. That could give us a whole 42/43 episodes of pure plot from here on out if they really decide to focus on it. Not to mention that the show's fairly likely to be renewed for at least one more season with how well its ratings and merchandise sales has been, unless CN is going absolutely full retard and wants to end it despite that.

The downward spiral is a subjective matter in the first place. You haven't enjoyed the recent episodes, but you don't account for everyone. Recent episodes like Gem Harvest and 3 Gems and a Baby have been enjoyed by many, though nothing substantial and plot-heavy happened in them to make them truly notable. In the past 10 episodes, we've had Mindful Education and Last One Out of Beach City which have both been major fan favourites. People on here have complained about 'townie episodes' but in reality only 2 of the past 10 episodes have focused on townie characters, Onion Gang and Future Boy Zoltron.

My other point still stands - you can't just assume that the quality you deem it as currently will remain throughout the rest of the series when the crew have done great episodes, even recently. By making that assumption, you only come off as pessimistic.

It's supposed to focus on the characters, it's always focused on the characters, it used to just care more about it's characters than it does now and the writing has become sloppy and directionless. Most episodes now a days flanderize the characters horribly and the arcs they're supposed to be developing in are either skipped over or handled lazily. None of the characters have any goals so none of them are pushing towards anything and have become stagnant.

Peridot had a goal before she got redeemed and became a meme. Jasper had goals and instead of developing her they gave her aids and bubbled her. Amethyst's arc and her goal to kick Jasper's ass to make her feel better about herself was dumb but it was better than nothing I guess. Lapis' redemption arc is nonexistent, she just became a woobified meme and isn't cool anymore. Malachite never got an arc. Garnet is just a fusion meme. Steven either acts like a prick or a retarded pussy all the time. Pearl is still not dead and growing at least and I'm sure she'll get another arc soon since she's the only character the writers seem to care about.
