What is the Infinite Jest of comics?

The Multiversity
>>

Cerebus
>>
>>88293397

/co/ doesn't really have a meme comic in the same way /lit/ has IJ or /mu/ has ITAOTS
>>
>>88293458
'Cerebus’ [regarded by many as Sim’s masterpiece] is just awful. It seems ridiculous to have to say it. He can’t think, he can’t write. There’s no discernible talent.”

>It’s all a clear indication, Bloom notes, of the decline of comic standards. We have no standards left. [Sim] seems to have been a very sincere and troubled person, but that doesn’t mean I have to endure reading him. I even resented the use of the term from Homer, when Heracles was sent by Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns, to bring back 'Cerberus' from Hades the king of the underworld.
>>
>>88293628
Cerebus was good for a very short period of its complete publication.

The one thing that's undeniably good about it is the lettering.

I haven't seen this pasta used for comics before. I like it.

>>88293672
Cerebus was good or great for about 200 issues of 300. Even when the writing was sub-par, the artwork was still gorgeous too, not just the lettering.
>>
>>88293828
I just made it.
Any input who should be the Stephen King in the new version.
I should also change Bloom to Groth.
>>
>>88293828
>High Society
>Church & State
that's pretty much it, anon.
>>
>>88293397

It has to be a book written and drawn by the same person, like a novel is. That is true comics, one true vision.

>>88293410

Sorry Morrison shill.
>>
>>88293397
What are you looking for, plot, style, setting, or complexity?

Setting: Dark Knight Returns
Plot: ?
Structure: Watchmen
Complexity and style: Watch the (you)'s roll in. Homestuck.
>>
>>88293944
>Jaka's Story
That was great.

Then Mothers and Daughters in the "good but not great" category, plus The Last Day being a return to the good stuff after the terrors of Latter Days.
>>
>>88293913
Morrison. I don't think Groth likes him either.
>>
>>88293672
>a very short period
High Society through Jaka's Story is a decade of great comics.

A fucking decade.

What is The Room of comics?
>>
>>88294278
Unfunnies.
>>
>>88294278
Marville
>>
>>88294278

That one Otherworlds Batman comic about the retarded kid
>>
>>88294278

Trouble
>>
>>88294390
Nah

The Room has a disarming innocence to it because it's so incompetently made, kind of like Ed Wood movies

From what I've seen of Unfunnies, it's just edge for the sake of edge by a really bored writer who CAN be good sometimes
>>
>>88294401
>>88294390
Terrible examples, those are clearly done with malice as the intent while The room was trying to he serious and failed, those are like the "Disaster Movie" of comics
>>
>>88294278
Girls
>>
>>88294474
In that case I'd second Marville. Even though I actually like it.
>>
>>88293397
Just because of how much of an edgelord meme it is, Watchmen is very much the Infinite Jest of comic world.

>>88294278
Sonichu
>>
>>88294417
But that was a good comic. Maybe you read it wrong.
>>
>>88294278
I like the part where /co/ knows more about bad comics than about good comics.

>Hey /co/, I'm going to storytime some great classic comics from before you were born.
>Ew, old comics are gross!

>Hey /co/, I'm going to storytime some complete garbage, let's call it a storytime of pain.
>SIGN ME UP!

>>

Yeah, I tend to agree. Girls was obviously meant to be taken seriously, but it's just...baffling.
>>
You know, I actually read Infinite Jest. Learned more about drugs and tennis than I ever wanted to know. Can't claim I enjoyed it much, though.

Now, Gravity's Rainbow? That's actually a great book, all memes aside.
>>
Cerebus
>>
>>88294278
All Star Batman and Robin

>Are you dense? Are you retarded? I'm the goddamn batman!
>>
>>88293397
Homestuck
>>
>>88293502
/co/ is too perpetually horny to search for an artistic masterpiece. It needs some semi-obscure animated movie to tout as the best thing ever and arbitrarily give themselves appearance of taste.

I could so see Waltz with Bashir being /co/'s Infinite Jest.
>>
>>88294417

I think that's just regular Batman.
>>
>>88294278
Ruins
>>
>>88294646
Eventually, all great comics will be called shit retroactively. Bad comics, on the other hand, are a spectacle in themselves, and will either retain their shit status, or be reevaluated positively in time. When it comes to wasting time, bad comics are the better investment.
>>
>>88296868
and Ulysses blows the both of them out of the water

But I'm guessing you didn't have the patience for that one

Well, I certainly won't buy the awful comics that get storytimed during the pain sessions here, so looking at the threads is my only chance to read them.
Good comics, I'll always have another occasion.

And the banter is way better on bad or special comics.
My best memory ever on this website was the Serenity storytime. It was a clunky and touching work, that brought out the full spectrum of emotions and sentiments in the /co/mrades.

What are you gonna discuss when talking about an acclaimed masterpiece?
Obscure lore? Most of /co/ doesn't have such knowledge.
Thank the OP? You should, but it's not really a discussion.
Reaction images? Bad etiquette.
Approval circlejerk? That's the only thing left.

>>88297221
Fantastic Planet.

If you want a comic version, I'm a specialist of pretentious and incomprehensible franco-belgian works. Salammbô by Druillet is perfect for that. Gorgeous, over the top, completely esoterical and it even got an accent somewhere in the title.
Or Metabarons if you want something that's actually readable by most people.
>>
>>88298449
"lore" isn't the only thing to discuss, I mean you can actually talk about what you liked or disliked about the comic, it being a "masterpiece" doesn't mean you have to like it and also X-men threads can get to the post cap very fast and are full of people who know a ton about x-men history
>>
>>88297221

Infinite Jest: The Graphic Novel, Volumes 1-4. By volume 5, it stops following the plot and does its own thing.
>>
>>88293397
Can you stop coming here and asking that fucking question please? Anyone who asks: "what is medium A's equivalent of medium B's masterpiece" has no idea about medium specificity, or has been brain-fucked at college that medium specificity somehow no longer matter because "muh post-modernism".

" What is the Scottish Parliament of baroque music?"
If you're even thinking about answering this fuck off back to /lit/ and /or /mu/.

>Meat equivalent of Giant Redwood
>Haute couture equivalent of emperor penguin
>Bed equivalent of Ferrari Testorossa

Fuck off with your inane questions
>>
>>88294000
>It has to be a book written and drawn by the same person, like a novel is.

I remember when I drew my first novel.
>>
>>88303230
If you think this is a dumb thread then why did you bump? The thread was going to die if you hadn't bumped.
>>

All of your answers are fucking retarded

The Room is incompetently made. It's also made by someone with an artistic vision that dredges up his own psyche and background to make it what it is. It's not just "whatever comic /co/ dislikes". It's much more complicated than that.
>>
>>88303344
Sometimes, mankind's emotions get the better of it's rationality.
>>
>>88303926
Yes, it is so consistent within it's own world of "wrongness" that the only thing I can think of to possibly compare it to would be a melodramatic version of a King Terry comic or the whole "heta-uma" movement in general

I'm fucking triggered already. What is this about?
>>
>>88304473
Not a comic.

If you want to suck Moore's beard then just trust him when he tells you that Cerebus is the most important comic you'll ever read.
>>
>>88304530
You sure it wasn't Gaiman that said that?
Whatever you think of Alan Moore anyone who admires work such as diverse as Carol Swain, Hunt Emerson, Craig Thompson (well, GCR), Kevin O'Neill, Dave Sim AND Los Bros has better critical thinking faculties than 70% of /co/
>>
>>88304909
Gaiman's praise was basically
>"Dave is as good as me. Maybe better. Maybe."
>>
>>88294278
Batman Odyssey
>>
>>88304975
I've heard that quote before. Except not quite as succinctly.
Of course, Gaiman cannot cartoon as well as Sim. So....
The first two names alone prove he knows what he's fucking on about--also praising GCR but not Blankets, kek
>>
>>88293397
Anything by Grant Morrison
>>
>>88294278
Tails Gets Trolled. They're both poorly made works of their respective mediums but they're hilarious to read/watch anyway.
>>
Fuck off /lit/ I come to /co/ to avoid Crash!, John Green, and Wallaceposting.

Holy...I want more
>>
>>88294278

>>88293397

Ahh, indiecucks
>>
>>88308303
>implying Morrison has never drawn his own comics before
