Lord Zedd Menaces the Heroes of JL / MMPR Crossover

>“I never want to hold back,” Taylor said. "When these two teams, these two Goliaths are meeting for the first time, I have far more ideas than I could possibly fit into 22 pages a month. I still look at the first issue and go, oh, I wanted to fit so much more in. Obviously you have to set up the whole premise and you have to teleport these people to the same dimension, but you really just want to get to the great bits. I have a bit of a motto whenever I'm writing which is ‘Death to exposition.’ I can't stand watching people talk about what we should be seeing, especially when you've got someone like Stephen who is just so incredible at delivering those shots.”

In a way, drawing this comic has been something artist Stephen Byrne has been training for his entire life. He shared with us some pages from a makeshift Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic he drew one day at a time during school lunch back when he was eight years-old.

>“I was drawing obsessively,” Byrne recalled. "Those Power Rangers comics that I made were the first time I started to draw stories. I started to draw sequences. I was very interested in the monsters and stuff that they'd come up with each time and I wanted to create my own monsters. … So this is very serendipitous, coming full circle that now I'm getting to work on this.”

While DC’s current Justice League comic and BOOM! Studios’ current Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic have a fairly seriously tone, Taylor and Byrne said they wanted to make sure this crossover was, above all else, a fun experience for fans. (DC and BOOM! are teaming up along with Saban Brands to publish this crossover comic.)

Byrne, who colors his own drawings, said he took cues from Ed McGuinness’s Superman/Batman, which has a certain degree of cartoonishness to it. But that’s not to say the comic will be light and silly. It starts on quite a dramatic note, as you can see by clicking through our exclusive preview of Issue #1 below:

Zack the Black Ranger has always seemed a bit under cooked as a character compared to the rest of the team, but now he’s the main character of this big crossover.

>“It always seemed like there were less Zack stories. There's always Tommy. There's always Jason. Kimberly gets a lot. Zack seemed to be on the periphery and he was the guy to do a little cute aside. So I want to lean straight into him,” Taylor explained. “And I've also done a bunch of conventions with Walter [Jones] who played him. And knowing him and knowing how he talks it made it much easier to get into the voice of Zack because I've watched this guy Cuban dance at 2 AM and that helps get into the right headspace.”

Taylor first made a name for himself in the comic world by writing an unexpectedly dark, charming, and faithful story for the Injustice: Gods Among Us digital-first comic series. Fans were drawn to his penchant for creating unexpected character pairings, most notably Green Arrow and Harley Quinn, so we asked if we could expect to see any unexpected pairings in this series.

The Justice League / Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1 FOC date for retailers is Monday, December 12, 2016. The issue goes on sale Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Also, the first issue of Taylor's six-issue limited series The Deep will be on sale from all-ages imprint KaBoom! the same day. At the time Saban Entertainment was really high on the idea of supposed invisible grunts who had glaring weaknesses. Like the Skugs from VR Troopers who were invulnerable to all forms of attack but would instantly disintegrate if they touch one another. The Z putties were suffered from this stupid idea. I only imagine it as one guy in the writing room fighting for the the Z Putties to have a weakness on their chest plates because it would make it easier to end fights scenes.

Zyuranger in general was pretty damn good, it felt like a bit darker fairy tale/fantasy series. I think "In Space" is generally considered the best of the classic run, it was right after Turbo.

Lost Galaxy was after that and its kind of middling but has a pretty cool crossover with In Space and a good finale.

Light Speed Rescue is next and there's a bit of a tone shift since now the Rangers are part of a government organization that fights demons. It was okay but I thought the acting was amazingly bad, even for PR standards.

Time Force is well regarded though I personally didn't watch it when it was on.

Wild Force is next and I liked it though I fully admit it's not the best.

Ninja Storm, Mystic Force, Dino Thunder and whatever else was next I can't really comment on. I saw a little bit of each and thought they looked okay.

When we were kids (not in US), me and my friends watched Power Rangers, starting with MMPR through In Space (in retrospect, very happy we got the whole Zordon Era, and that was a perfect stopping point).

MMPR 3 and Zeo got heavy rotation, while I have almost no memories of Jason and co, so to us, Tommy is leaps and bounds the coolest ranger. I mean, it wasn't a contest, it was a given "Who's your favorite Ranger?" "Tommy." (note, not Green or White or Red, him personally)

And I mean it makes sense, Tommy was written as fucking OP in the show for YEARS, of course he has borderline-memetic popularity. He was always stronger, faster, more powerful and even took over leading the team for like three years.

Zyu's schizophrenic tone was due to the fact that the producers/writers planned for Zyu to be a back to basic kid friendly show, but had to deal with Jetman (the sentai that came before) being a HUGE fucking hit in Japan, as far as revitalizing interest in Super Sentai and crossing over with large numbers of older viewers, drawn in by Jetman's more or less serious tone/deconstruction of the genre (Jetman heavily homaged Gatchman, which Super Sentai was based off of as far as influences).

So it flipped back and forth tone-wise as a result of them trying to find a happy medium, but it was considered a bit of a failure ratings-wise. It's only saving grace were toy sales, which did well enough to keep it from being a total flop. Indeed, the only thing that keeps it in the eyes of Japan these days is the Power Rangers connection, as far as it being famous for what it spawned.

Jetman was a huge thing for Super Sentai and it's success was a double edged sword in terms of spectre that lingered over 90s era Super Sentai. Dairangers was a blatant attempt to replicate Jetman as was Oh Ranger (though the subway death cult terror attack ruined Oh Ranger). KakuRangers was an attempt to return the show to it's kids show roots and it was not until Car Ranger that they gave up trying to redo Jetman and did a straight up comedy season (and was rewarded for it, as Car Rangers was a huge hit in Japan, much to Saban's horror since they wanted more serious sentai to adapt)

It's been a problem that's plagued Saban's comic stuff for years, back to the Marvel Masked Rider/Power Rangers/VR Troopers comics and the Image Power Rangers Zeo stuff. They're not used to working with those kinds of designs, so when they look at Sentai stuff they basically go "Okay. Japanese monsters. Godzilla stuff."
