Just downloaded this because I thought the animation looked awesome.
Will I get what's going on if I haven't watched the show?
>>
>>88264648

There is an opening narration that tells you everything you need to know.

It is a generic good vs evil story; anyone can follow it.
>>
>>88264648

It was just an excuse to have robots kill each other. And it's the last thing Orson Wells ever did.
>>
>>88264648
I've never watched the show but love the movie, it's simple enough for you to get what's going on as long as you have a basic concept of what Transformers is about.

Fucking love this movie.
>>
>>88264648

The stuff that won't make sense in the movie won't make sense even if you watched the first 2 seasons of the cartoon that led up to it.

>WTF are the Quintessons and why do they do any of the things that they do?
>WTF is Unicron and where did he even come from and why does he hate the Matrix?
>WTF is the Matrix and where did it come from because no one ever mentioned it before?

All those things were made up for the movie and didn't get explained until the season that came after the movie. So you're fine jumping into the film completely cold.
>>
Yeah, great movie
Hopefully it gets you to watch the show as well, but probably not since it had significantly less impressive animation
>>
>>88264648

Watch GI Joe the Movie after this. It's the ideal double feature.

>>88264648
Spoilers, but Ironhide was one of my favorites in the cartoon and they straight up executed him. And Prowl, Brawn AND Ratchet. It was like a scene out of the damned Godfather, in a kids' cartoon!

Starscream was my favorite period and he got straight fucking obliterated. Probably the most brutal shit I'd seen at that point in my life.

Optimus Prime had an entire scene where he passes away in a hospital.

I fucking LOVED it. I love that movie.
>>
>>88273467
As a Soundwave fan, I applaud that this movie game him a catchphrase.

I used to rent the movie religiously from the local video store, but didn't watch it for good 20 years after that. I recently came back to it fearing the film might have aged poorly or perhaps sucked the whole time without my tiny child brain knowing but, surprise, it was better than I remembered.
>>
>>88273243
That narration is in all versions.

I thought you were talking about the opening Star Wars-esque crawl that explains the whole thing. On some versions that's in place of the opening credits.
>>
>>88273467
You forgot to mention how they had a memorial to all the dead Autobots which they later rammed into a sun.
>>
It's been almost 30 years since I first saw this film, but man, this opening still gives me chills.

Has any other /co/ related villain ever had an introduction as impactful as this? Unicron just floats through space to one of the most ominous, yet mellow pieces of music ever written, a proceeds to just inhale an entire planet of living beings, tearing it apart and sucking into that glowing mouth. And there was absolutely nothing anyone could do about it. One guy just barely escapes, and the others that tried to flee just get sucked in anyway.

And he never says a word. No grand speeches, no proclamations, he just shows up and eats everyone.

I can't think of any other villain that made their standing as an utterly overwhelming cosmic force known in such a direct manner.

Watching the little documentary on the blu-ray they say that the koreans, or whomever, that did all the backgrounds actually did them in too fine a quality for back in the day. So the blu-ray literally has a better picture than seeing it in theaters back in 1986.

After THAT they pretty much aimed for the kiddies. Even when TFP was well received by older fans Hasbro changed course and made their next show far more kiddified.

This is literally the worst fucking movie if you've ever watched the show, like I did.

For one thing, literally every single episode of the show was

>Shit happens
>DECEPTICONS, ATTACK
>Transformers fight
>DECEPTICONS RETREAT

Literally every single fucking episode.
Megatron was the worst leader, which was pretty apparent on the outset, but was also underlined by how literally
EVERY
SINGLE
ONE
of his underlings, minus Soundwave, Shockwave, and I think the constructicons (it's been a while, forgive me if my facts are muddy) basically questioned his leadership and belittled him at every turn.
Point is, the decepticons were fuck-ups through and through. After however long the series went, there was nothing left to fear about them

And then the movie starts with the Autobots losing SO FUCKING BAD that they're stuck on a single base in the middle of nowhere.

FUCKING WHAT

HOW

Why don't we get to see that shit?
>>
In still amazed they had a completely out of nowhere musical number in the garbage planet and it was fucking great
>>
>>88265086

Creation matrix was in the original Marvel comics in the first 10 issues, I think. The movie just made it an orb thing instead of a computer program module.

I don't care, I watched the show and I always only liked Decepticons (literally only had toys of Decepticons ever) so this movie was the shit to me, fuck Autobums, I love seeing them die in the intro of this movie

Also, from a meta standpoint....we all know why Decepticons always lost in the show, they had to or else the series would end because they'd kill everything. We also know why they were allowed to win in the movie, to make room for the new cast.
>>
>>88278345
Law of averages senpai
>>
>>88277408
The best part is all those characters who technically died, but didn't since the scenes depicting their deaths weren't in the film or got revived later for reasons. Gears was a casualty at one point, but that was in an earlier script.

-Shockwave: Unicron crushed him when he slammed his hand down on Cybertron
-Reflector trio: Same as Shockwave
-Coneheads: Seen in the film, but the show probably didn't get the memo, like the Insecticons
-Trailbreaker: His corpse is seen while the Decepticons retreat, but this was cut from the flim
-Mirage: After killing Bombshell (and yes, the scene confirmed he straight up killed him since it mentioned he was lifeless as he was carried to the shuttle), Megatron shot him. With Megatrons gun suddenly capable of killing folks, this isn't hard to believe. Since the scene was cut, it explains bombshell still being barely alive on the shuttle.
-Red Alert: Killed when he, tracks, and Ultra Magnus tried to take out Devastator, but was shot by the constructicons while retreating.

>When you realize cartoons are aimed at children.
Oh, boo hoo. I WAS a child when I saw this!

I was like 10 the first time I watched Transformers the Movie in the 90s and it was fantastic! Why do we have to cater to the prissiest little bitch crybaby kids? I know there are still kids out there that cryo-freeze their action figures in a glass of water and say they were frozen in carbonite, or strap firecrackers to 'em because that toy died in battle.

Maybe if more cartoons didn't shy away from this sort of thing we wouldn't have the Barney the Dinosaur generation on their moral crusade today.

Shit, could we even get away with the last musical number of Brave Little Toaster today? I bet not. It's sad. Oh well, I'll always have the memories.

Okay, no, I'm not fucking done.

Imagine you're 12 in 1986. You're about to watch the Transformers movie. You love Transformers. You've bought all the toys you could. You can't wait to see what schemes Megatron will concoct, and what grand fights Optimus Prime will command.

It starts with new characters. You don't know who Hot Rod or Kup or Ultra Magnus are, but that's okay, the show brought in characters that were never mentioned before or since too. Whatever. So long as all the original gang is there, and lo and behold, they are!

Exactly long enough to get SLAUGHTERED TO FUCKING DEATH.
FUCKING EVERYONE
EVERY character you have ever loved and bought the toy of.
Killed in an unusually brutal manner.
Autobot and Decepticon alike. What the fuck is going on?
The movie's only barely started, and OPTIMUS PRIME IS FUCKING DEAD.
FUCK THIS SHIT.

By the end of the movie, you don't know who anyone is or what anyone is fighting for. Megatron is still there (Reformatted into Galvatron, but whatever), so you assume Optimus Prime is going to come back by the end of the movie too. Probably with an awesome new look, everything will be all right.

FUCKING NOPE.
THE FUCKING WHINY ASS KID ROBOT IS THE NEW LEADER.
WHAT THE FUCK.
NOT EVEN THE GUY WHO LOOKS LIKE HE'D FIT THE PART, THE SHITTY ASS SPEEDSTER.
FUCK.

It's okay though, Galvatron is still here, and--nope, he's now dead too.

It's alright, maybe they'll take the show in a new direction! Maybe the new toys are cool!

So we go over to the Toys R Us to see what the new characters look like, and yeah nope. Pic related.
Fuck this. Fuck everything. Half the fun of Transformers back then was that the robots turned into *real* cars and trucks (except for the ones that didn't, but whatever). What the fuck are these things? They all look like ass!

And that's the story of how I lost my innocence at age 12.
>>
>>88278646
I don't know what you're talking about.

"Give Me your face" is one of the best lines ever uttered in any Transformers anything ever
>>

See? This one survived. More kids would.

I was pretty much the same way, younger even when I saw this in the early 90s, and I couldn't have been more hyped at the direction they took. It's one of my fondest childhood moments. The thing that fucked me up was the end of Lufia 2.

Oh and Galvatron didn't die. He just got flung someplace.

The movie tie-in transformers were seriously, no hyperbole, some of the worst transforming robot toys ever made.

That's amazing to me.

The concenting opinion, as far as I've always known, was that the movie was pretty, and the music was great in a VERY You-had-to-be-there kind of way, but the story is nonsense and the movie is responsible for ruining many a childhood.

Also, it's basically single-handedly responsible for the "Dark age", as what came immediately after was the absolute nadir of popularity through the rest of the 80s and early 90s, until Beast Wars caused it to blip slightly, and the '07 movie brought it firmly back into the spotlight.

This is how you know people don't bother to pay attention to what they're watching. The plot couldn't be simpler or more straight forward, no different than any sort of standard fantasy adventure with a sacred relic needed to destroy a great evil.

I was probably 6 or 7 when I first saw this movie, had not watched much of the show beforehand, and I was not lost at all. But people today seem to take it as an offense if they don't understand everything about a film before they've even watched it.

The ones that were fired upon most had the breach in the shuttle and debris to take cover behind, the autobots had chairs. And nothing changes the fact that they were outnumbered, heavily outgunned, and caught by surprise. Even if they'd winged one of the Constructicons it wouldn't have mattered, they were screwed.

The very first things the Cons did was pile through the breach. Both sides just lobbed shots, especially Ratchet. What the Cons DID have was about a two foot high ground advantage, which if you've seen Star Wars is all you need to win.

>>88282209
Heh, yeah. Ratchet went all akimbo and didn't hit shit. What a shock.

Anyway, I just don't see the point of having Ratchet or Ironhide land a head shot or something when the point of the scene was that they were completely overwhelmed and didn't stand a chance. The whole point was to illustrate the fact that the attack on Autobot City was going to be serious business, the mother of all G1 battles. Which it was.

Not only that but blasters that use to just knock them back are now creating huge wholes in the body.
Also you have the bigger head scratches like where half the 85 team members are, and how Optimus Dies from a hole in his tummy when he got chop down to just a head and lived fine in the cartoon(twice). Actually that also begs questions about the matrix. Did they take it out or just leave it in Croc Prime?
I could go on but it was a kids cartoon aimed to sell toys so it's a given that it's trash
>>
>>88287417
The film and season 3 were being made in parallel and apparently it was a scripting issue where you want his introduction to be noteworthy and they went with the mindset that people would watch the show regardless if they see the film so Metroplex first appearance was saved for the cartoon.

What the Hell happened to his voice? Frank Welker does Season 3 Galvatron, right? Why does he sound so different?
>>
>>88298376
Leonard Nimoy voiced Galvatron in the movie, well he wasn't going to be employed on the series. Too expensive. Rather than do a Nimoy impersonation they just went with Galvatron being fucking nuts thanks to being stuck in a plasma bath since being hurled out of Unicron. Welker just gives him a crazy voice.

That's pretty much it.
>>
>>88298376
Most people (aka fans) theorize that the death of Unicron drove him insane, and it's somewhat obvious if you watch it.

And it makes sense when you think about it. He was slowly descending into madness by the end of the film once he got the Matrix in his grasp. And once the person who gave him his newfound power died, any sanity he may have had would, understandably, be lost.

Behind the scenes, though, I think the voice direction just told Welker to "sound as non-Nemoy as possible."

>More accurately they tried to aim the 1986 Transformers are more college aged fans
>kids cartoon just under 3 year old having college aged fans
Do you just spew shit without thinking?
It was stated in all 3 "making of" documentaries of the film state that they killed off the robots for two reasons
1.An attempt to get a PG rating because back then that was what they needed to get more tickets (parents have to come with their kid, in the 80's it was quite common to drop your kid off at a theater and go shopping, this was before talk shows sensationalized child abduction/molestation). In irony it didn't work until they plunged a certain swearword in it.
2. Remove the old toy line. The mindset was to get kids to let go of and forget their old toys and make them latch on to the new. This was new ground for just about everyone in the industry so they had no idea kids would actually be that moved/upset that Prowl, and company get blown to bits.

Also the aim has been and always will be kids because that's what sells toys. Prime had weaker sales then previous series so they went more kid friendly and so far something is working because RiD is selling better then Prime did.
>>
>>88301135
Prime was also fucking expensive to produce, RiD looks way way shittier because they specifically tooled it to not cost a fortune to make.

To their credit though, prime was a gorgeous show, probably one of the nicest looking CGI cartoon series ever made.
>>
BTW, there's sort of an explanation of why the Decepticons were one shotting people in this film. The earlier draft points out that the Decepticons had energon to spare, but the Autobots didn't. Destroying Autobot City would end the war since it was a massive energy facility, and with it gone, the Autobots would be finished.

So basically, the reason so many characters died is because their weapons were at super low settings, while the bad guys had their weapons at max power.
>>
>>88301972

That's absolutely ridiculous. Why wouldn't they have done that at any one point before the movie?
>>
>>88301023
Really? I felt like I was being pandered too a little too hard there. I was like, 'Yeah, stop sucking my dick and do something else.'

>>
>>88302076

I recall a number of times where Decepticons had a lot of energy.

And are we supposed to believe that the Autobots couldn't just go "Hey, if you could spare some energy, it'd let us take down the evil Decepticons once and for all."?
>>
>>88302047
I remember a fan theory posted a while ago assumed the Tranformers armor is weaker the less energon is in their system, that coupled with this>>88301972 might make the deaths in the movie make some sense.

It actually helps explain a few scenes in S3, the when Springer and Rodimus get bombarded by Decepticons that are low on Energon, but their weapons do nothing to the Autobots.
>>
>>88302145
>And are we supposed to believe that the Autobots couldn't just go "Hey, if you could spare some energy, it'd let us take down the evil Decepticons once and for all."?

Given how wars are constantly fought in real life over oil and shit, I'm gonna guess no, human governments didn't want to feed the giant robots their resources.

This movie is a collection of great scenes.

Fun to watch on youtube, but when you actually sit down to watch the full movie it just doesn't work. Too many abrupt cuts and jarring pacing problems due to all the cuts and deleted content, not to mention just the TV crew trying to make the jump to Movie and failing

So many scenes got cut leading the characters to be little more than cardboard cutouts and so many characters from season 1 and 2 simply disappear with no explanation.
Not to mention the new stuff that isn't explained like the Matrix or Unicron...

It's a bloody mess, and really is overrated by Transformers fans.

This sounds corny as shit, but when I was a little kid I used to think of that song whenever I was hyped up for something. It was a great way to psyche myself up. I'd think of this scene and feel a tiny bit invincible.

Which is a little ironic, considering what happened.

I've only seen the movie and never watched the series, and I got what was happening.

But did you enjoy it?

Sure. I mean I was like 12. But sure.

I am not even a transformers fan, yet I love the shit out of this movie!

Didn't Welker say doing that voice was one of the hardest ones he ever did? Like literally there was times he threw out his voice when voicing Galvatron?

To each their own i guess. I was having a blast the entire game.

Given he was basically screaming with rage in near everything he said, I wouldn't be surprised if it was tough on him.

Galvatron was basically a fucking Angry Marine.

People that watched the show had no idea what was going on

>wtf is this giant planet eater fucking thing and how do these random robots know who it is but the Autobots don't
>wtf is this matrix of leadership, you'd think that would have come up before
>wtf are these new characters, Ultra Magnus is Optimus' old friend?! We've never even seen him before!

You may actually be on to something there.

My dad refused to get a VHS for years because it was inferior. He only gave in after we couldn't rent any videos and my mother couldn't borrow videos from colleagues for work.

>Starscream and Cobra Commander got ignominious treatment in the Tranformers and GI.Joe movie because Chris Latta was hard to work with, and probably dealing with the shady crap that led to his 90s death

One last resurrection, I was away from the internet for 2 weeks, did I miss any `TF storytimes or were there further delays?

>It is a generic good vs evil story; anyone can follow it.
Unless you're a critic from the 80s.

I always thought it was weird that Soundwave was one of Optimus' first victims in the film. He gets ran down and shot multiple times, yet is completely fine minutes later when rescuing Megatron. It's like they forgot they just killed him off.

If you're literally clueless, watch the G1 S1-S2, then the movie.

After that, you're free to pick your own wave of TF shows to watch.

I'd recommend Beast Wars series, then Animated->Prime. Can't remember the japanese ones to be honest. Avoid the manga one.

For the comic series, it's a long ride but start at MTMTE Volume 1, then RiD Volume 1, read until they hit Dark Cybertron. Once after that, you can choose to read the older IDWs. Lots of continuity errors though but you'll do fine.

The Bay movies are pretty mediocre, two of which were horrible, other two were passable monster mash invasion movies. Love em but they're mostly babbies first TF post 2005.

Thanks, have to read MTMTE Revolution and Revolution #5 to catch up. I guess the event is now over? Will... the guy who said he'd storytime it all wait till new year? I'll be home by then.

I think Japanese continuation of G1 spared Wheeljack, as he shows up in Victory alive and well.
Though for some reason he was a doctor in that one instead of an inventor.

Is this the only fucking action cartoon you've ever watched or something?
