Jane's performance? Nope, nothing wrong. He's a perfectly serviceable actor for the character.

The movie itself, however, only occasionally veered into Punisher territory. That said, it's still a solid neo-western and I appreciate it as such. Also, Mark Collie as Harry Heck was amazing.

It was a good movie, but it had obvious flaws like most
But on the subject of simply the actor himself I enjoyed him but I prefer Ray Stevenson, to me he just pulled off what my ideal version of Frank is which is more of a monolithic big guy who's grisled and has that thousand yard stare
>>
>>88264723
Doesn't the Punisher punch clean through a guy's skull in this movie?
>>
>>88264723
Yeah i enjoyed Warzone more personally and enjoyed Stevenson quite a lot. I got from him that he was playing a weary, callous Punisher who had been up to his work for quite some time, meanwhile Thomas Jane perfectly played Frank as the ghost of a family man seeking vengeance. A much more limited story to be sure. Bernthal is comprehensive though and i'm super fucking excited to see his series.
>>
>>88264758
Hole in the face, yes
>>
Jane Punisher sucked. War Zone was the closest thing to a Max comic ever, and is the best Frank in cinema. Ink's death may be the most comic book scene ever filmed.
>>
>>88264100
Agreed. He's the perfect nobody to portray Frank.

Yeah I liked both in different ways but prefer Ray, haven't seen the Daredevil one yet, and I was quite fond of the 80s Punisher movie which was pretty much my first exposure to the character as a kid, but I haven't seen it in a few years now...need to give it a re watch
>>
>>88264100
Other than the fact that Thomas Jane only talks in a monotone mumble in every single performance he has ever given, right?

Cumbersome large guns to carry wherever you go or convenient green light of vegan power at your literal fingertips?

>That said, it's still a solid neo-western and I appreciate it as such.

This. The 2004 movie makes some decisions that may not ring true for hardcore Punisher fans, but it's a great movie in its own right even if you don't know who the Punisher is. I should know, because the 2004 movie was my introduction to the character and now I'm a huge Punisher fan.

War Zone is goofy schlock and I hate it

The whole thing was fucked by the Studio mandating a PG-13 rating. The setup in the first act is great but it becomes comedy Punisher who can't really kill anyone and it just becomes slapstick quickly. Arguably War Zone is also slapstick but it's the sort of proper Punisher Max Frank based violence.

Jane's a great Punisher. The difference in the performance between that film and the Game was amazing (That scene where he tells Matt Murdock to get lost is hillarious). And he wasn't even supposed to voice the game. He was contracted to doing some of the advertising and box art in costume to link it to the film for whatever deal they worked out. The game's producer was there who met Jane. When he explained the game (Hardcore M-Rated Frank simulator) and said they didn't cast Frank in the game yet. Jane asked for to be added to the auditions. They just gave him the role.

The early years of Cape movies were kinda fucked. A PG-13 Punisher and Daredevil for fuck sake
>>
>>88266920
War Zone was a reboot
>>
>>88266992
I know, the sequel they were going to make before Jane left and they rebooted it into war zone would've been a much better film
>>

>that ps2 game

my nigga. one of my favs. i loved just going to the arsenal to hear janes punisher talk about all his weapons.
>for when i wanna get back to basics
>>
>>88267216

I heard they were going for R rating, but producers found the script too dark to greenlight the project. Apparently one of the subplots would be an adaptation of that priest plotline from "Welcome back, Frank", but they were going to play it for drama, instead of black comedy, like Ennis did.
>>
>>88266711
Is that physically possible?
>>
>>88264280
>The movie itself, however, only occasionally veered into Punisher territory
Despite being based on a number of Punisher stories and several of the scenes copied from the books wholesale.
>>
>>88264100
Nothing wrong with him at all, he's a great Punisher.

The issue is that the film itself was weak.

>>88264723
Now, Warzone I never understood why people love so much.

It felt really cartoonish, which doesn't work for me in Punisher solo works.

I'm also not a fan of Punisher wearing tactical gear or with slicked back hair.
>>
>>88268364
>It felt really cartoonish
I liked that. It's more Marvel Knights than MAX feel for me.
>>
>>88268338
Yeah, other than the Florida/Puerto Rico stuff, which were caused by a last minute budget cut that made it too costly to shoot on NY, 2004's Punisher is probably one of the more faithful adaptations of comics.
>>
>>88264723
Isn't the opening scene of this movie a huge ripoff of Batman Year One?
>>
>>88268381
I liked the over the top violence in War Zone though. It was like a throwback to those old Troma movies from the 80's.
>>
>>88268381
>>88268605
That's fair; most of my exposure to Punisher is the MAX stuff, so if people enjoy the more over-the-top stuff in Warzone because it reminds them of comics I never read, then it's good that they got that.
>>
>>88266972
It was rated R, you dunce.

Jane's voice in the game was so good I still hear it when I read the comics.

My main issue with the 2004 movie was they spent a little too much time setting things up. Frank was an undercover agent who kills Howard Saint's son, Saint has his family killed in revenge then Frank seeks revenge for that... it's a bit much when "wife and kids get hit by stray bullets" would have sufficed. I also would have liked to see him terrorize other criminals throughout the movie for a bit, make a name for himself just before hitting the Saints at the end.
>>
>>88270192
I´m looking forward to seeing him. I think a small mention to him in Defenders would be neat too.
Say, Jessica considers inviting him to the team and Matt soundly refuses saying "we don´t kill". She replies with "Speak for yourself" but ends up accepting and not bringing Castle in. Not like he would have accepted anyway.
>>
True!
If it had a bigger budget and able to be set in new york it would've been even better.

Just play the PC version. You can mod it to force widescreen and uncensor the special kills.

I truly think every live-action Frank has done a great job in their own different ways. Can't wait to see more of Bernthal, he embodies a really gritty feeling of sorrow and psychosis in the character.

There isn't a less menacing looking actor in the world. He just looked bored as hell. He couldn't convey angst, hate or sadness convincingly. He just looked like an empty shell, which was (I'm guessing) intentional but it's stupid since Punisher is driven by revenge and is not even slightly apathetic which shows he or the director misunderstood the character. Also, not wearing body armor makes zero sense outside of comic books. Ray Stevenson remains the ultimate movie Punisher and it's not even close. I hate to use the word badass but Ray was badass as the Punisher. The only reason anyone likes Punisher 2004 is because it's very loosely based on Welcome Back Frank. Fucking John Travolta as the villain, seriously

honorable mention to Jon Bernthal. His ultra violent modern day middle east USMC vet version is great and I'm really looking forward to his own series
>>
>>88274666
He was a little too growly in my opinion. Always too close to losing his shit. Frank losing his shit completely should be rare and intense (think Up is Down, Black is White). But he wasn't really punisher proper till the very end like in the 2004 version. I never really think of Frank as being full punisher till he moves beyond personal revenge.
>>
>>88276052
>He was a little too growly in my opinion. Always too close to losing his shit.

Good point. I had to read the subtitles when he was talking
>>
>>88275962
>knocking 2004 for lack of "sense" while praising warzone in the same breath

I didn't think it was possible to be this stupid
>>
>>88276684

Warzone was over the top and the movie itself was far from perfect but if we're just gonna compare to two Franks (this is what the OP post was about), Warzone Frank wins by a mile
>>
>>88275962
He wore body armor in the Jane one though.
>>
Jane's movie didnt feel right because of Frank's elaborate plan for revenge. Warzone was over the top ridiculous but I still enjoyed it as a dumb action movie. Netflix Frank seems to hit all the right notes, he always looked angry and dead inside
>>
>>88268209
no.
the bones in the face are some of the thickest and hardest in the human body (they protect your brain after all) and the bones in the hand are some of the thinnest and fragile in the body. It's why boxers wear giant pads on their hands for their matches.

If you tried this, and tried to punch through someones head, you would probably impale the dudes face with your new found wolverine claws protruding from what used to be your hand.
