Books 1 and 2 are mostly shitting on Karine. Book 3 has an overarching story that leads up to a magnificent moment of vindication.

Trying to make a perpetual bitch character sympathetic was a mistake. I would've felt more for Vicky crying after getting her comeuppance if she didn't keep reverting to her old tricks by the next book.

If you like BoJack Horseman, but understand that the first couple of episodes kinda suck before it starts to get better, then you should know The Bellybuttons is like that. It's worth it in the long haul. If you refuse keep going with either BoJack or Bellybuttons because they have a rough start, then I'm not sure what to tell you. I guess either drop it and know you're missing out, or skip ahead to the good stuff and come back to the early stuff for more context later.

The creators don't seem to have started it with a story in mind. It began more as a gag a day newspaper strip kind of thing. So in the first volumes that's what you get. But then they decided to take the characters they'd created and put them in a bigger story, which turned out to be a very good one. So that's why it's like this. It evolves and eventually becomes a very different comic that moves far away from where it starts.

Anyway, I got invested as fuck in this after the first couple of volumes even considering the wonky translations. The first 2 or 3 volumes are just the strips from a newspaper, I think, so there is little to no overarching story.
