As a supporting character she does the job of making a story feel appropriately espionage-y, although there are like dozens of equivalents in the Marvel universe who can do the same thing. Personally, I'm partial to Silver Sable

As a secondary character she's great, because she adds that extra espionage thrill and isn't outdated

As a primary character she's awful because 9 times out of 10 whoever writes her goes the "I'm not a real muderer route" or "Woe upon me for my tortured past" with her character.
I mean I sincerely liked her and BuckyCap together since she wasn't the primary focus of the story she could display her character growth.

But that's just me, there's probably some Black widow super fan out there crying into his vintage comics about how the MCU ruined her character. I feel bad for that guy, but I've been that guy for other characters so not too bad.

People do, but I don't really know why. Probably because she was the first female superhero introduced in the MCU. She's a pretty generic character otherwise.

Only issue is she's also one of the few major female Marvel superheroes whose origin/name isn't tied to an earlier male superhero.
