Reminds me of the time that I had to stand on a step ladder to change a lightbulb. As I ascended beyond the first step, I became dizzy, then fell unconscious. When I awoke, I was surrounded by broken ladders, and a weeping shop owner screamed that I had ruined his livelihood.

Doesn't the comic derive it's name from him jumping off the roof?

>>

I always imagined it as a colossal fart, the kind Ronnie would be unable to suppress even in a crowded public area, no matter how hard he tried. As the appalled and contemptuous stares of the people around him bore into his already tear-streaked cheeks, he looks for an opening to run away, his only remaining hope that it wasn't wet.

For me, it's just the absurdity of Ronnie's troubles.

It's not just that he eats too much fast food. It's that he eats so much fast food that McDonalds actually celebrates him at Thanksgiving.
>>
>>88242653
Ronnie gets $600 a month from Patreon, if you want to bitch about people you don't like making money go to fucking Buckley, the CAD Patreon is at $3,292 a month
>>
>>88242653
>i'm sure he's crying into his patreonbux right now
He makes $602 a month, which is like $46 a comic. I get that you don't like Ronnie but goddamn criticizing his Patreon is a terrible way to go.
>>
>>88242775
>the CAD Patreon is at $3,292 a month
Who ARE these people?
>>
>>88242678
that would be a perfectly fine, serviceable, funny comic in any other universe.

but when the entire comic is one absurd situation after another for Sad Fat Man to feebly wheeze and cry about, without even the fig leaf of an overarching plot to frame the hijinks and add purpose to his troubles, it kind of loses its pizzazz. these are just newspaper comics but for tumblrs-in-denial and i'm thinking, get the fuck over yourself ronnie.

>>
>>88242653
>crying into his patreonbux right now
>to get the ADULTING IS HARD expression just right

Real talk. I don't get this mentality. You aren't the only person I've seen on here or the internet as a whole who seems to have this reaction either. What is up with this thought process? What makes you feel this way about Patreon? It's literally just a way for artists to create free to consume content while making money to live while they do so. There's literally nothing wrong with it, and it's a completely adult thing to try and run your own media organization that takes donations from private investors for the creation of media.
>>
>>88243245
Its just a comic bro.
>>
>>88243265

>>
>>88242508
This. The 10/10 strips are exploitations of Ronnie's beautiful misery.
>>
>>88242376
The humor of Whomp isn't that you relate to it. With a lot of slice-of-life comics, that is the punchline, that you understand the point. Whomp is great because Ronnie takes basic relatable things (some not even relatable), and exaggerates them beyond logic and reason. Humor is generally based in some truth, and that's why Whomp works, because instead of just expecting us to relate, it presents Ronnie's flaws on top of it.
>>
>>88243265
because it's wrong and evil to make money, anon
instead of getting donations from people that like your work, you should put pop-up ads on your website instead
>>
>>88243304
You can look at it in different ways, people who donate have an expectation of getting something back for the money.
>>
>>88243265
i don't have a problem with how ronnie chooses to make money, or patreon as a platform, for the reasons you posted.

however, i think the subscription/backer model can lead to artists, designers, programmers, whoever, doing the safe reliable option to satisfy their audience, without experimenting or evolving or really going anywhere or doing anything.

this isn't ronnie's *fault*, or anything, but i think that it's clear he has one joke and that's 'lol comic-ronnie is broken and agrias is still there for some reason'. i'm also trying to work in a point about how a 2012 Whomp comic is pretty much indistinguishable from a 2016 Whomp comic, but i'm out of steam a little.
>>
>>88243547
>however, i think the subscription/backer model can lead to artists, designers, programmers, whoever, doing the safe reliable option to satisfy their audience, without experimenting or evolving or really going anywhere or doing anything.

That's true of any method of making money creatively. Unless you have another source of income or are already wealthy, you're going to be dependent on catering to the whims of others.
>>
>>88243304
a.) Nice job trying to take credence away from what I was saying by arguing semantics.
b.) A Donation is literally defined as "the act or instance of presenting something as a gift, grant, or contribution."

Giving someone money on patreon meets the definition of all these things. And an investor is someone who puts money, time, or resources into something that offers a return. Regardless of whether this return in money oriented. Donating or contributing money to someone who makes a comic and then receiving said comic, even when it's free to consume, is a form of donation investing. The comic wouldn't have been there otherwise. And even if it had, people are still free to donate their money as they see fit, you have no control over other people. My question wasn't even pertaining to this though. I want you to tell me why you take such offense to the concept of artists receiving money through Patreon for works that they otherwise might not be able to do for enough money to live on.
>>
>>88243634
he doesn't even need to cater to the whims of others, as he's evidently found his comfy niche, audience, and means of support already and doesn't need to challenge himself or branch out or really change anything at all; just keep plodding away at his webcomic forever, rolling out the same old punchline until his arteries harden i guess

>>88243547
I'm pretty sure Ronnie made a joke about that himself. I really think that what you are describing is one of the major flaws of most webcomics and of newspaper comics as well. I feel the only way for Ronnie to really do something creative would be for him to start a new project entirely.
>>
>>88242870
People with excess income and need to put it somewhere to avoid getting bumped up the tax bracket.
>>
>>88244955
He already made and then dropped Otaku Dad.

I do appreciate that he gave it a real ending, but I expected it to go a lot more places.
>>
>>88245045
It was supposed to. His Patreon dropped below the Otaku Dad level, so he ended it. I too respect that he didn't just kill it outright.
>>
>>88245131
>His Patreon dropped below the Otaku Dad level, so he ended it
that's inexcusable imo. like it's one thing to try something and have it miss, or people to 'not get it' or simply not enjoy it, you could justify ending it outright with that. whatever, stuff sometimes just doesn't work.

but tying that journey outside your comfort zone to some arbitrary level of income that ronnie himself chose, beyond what he's getting already is like, you're not even _trying_ to change or do something different. hence why Whomp hasn't changed or evolved or done anything at all, it's just a regular drip of comics with the exact same familiar list of punchlines ('ronnie is sad, fat', 'anime/videogame reference', 'ronnie wishes life was like anime/videogames', etc) produced more or less explicitly in return for income.

whomp is stagnant on purpose, ronnie filyaw is a fucking hack
>>
>>88242907
As much as Whomp! has the same punchlines in its comics (Being fat, sad, weeaboo, etc) I get a good chuckle out of most of them. I don't need an overarching story for every single piece of media I see. Newspaper comics are mostly one offs because a lot of them are comfort food, likable, and you can put them down whenever, like a sitcom. And I don't think that's inherently bad, same way I think an overarching plot doesn't make a comic automatically good.
So get over yourself, please
>>
>>88242775
Willis is $5000+ and Jeph Jacques is nearing 9K. Whomp gets samey at times but there's much bigger fish to fry.
>>
>>88244138
The perfect woman. She tolerate Ronnie so imagine how well she can get along with anyone less pathetic!

Plus there's the no pooping thing.

That's a biggie.
>>
>>88245641
It's not an excuse, but that's exactly how most newspaper comic strips have worked. Garfield is infamous for it; Jim Davis doesn't even make the strips any more.

The reason it never took off on Patreon is because it's wildly inconsistent. There are 10 great comics a year and then a pile of shit.
