Originally it was tech-based so not as powerful, but it's teleportation powers were better since 616 Mjolnir could only create portals while Ultimate Mjolnir could teleport en mass. Captain America even used it once to teleport the entire triskellion to Iran.

But in Secret Wars, Doom buffed it up to a standard Mjolnir and slapped the worthiness enchantment on it (which it didn't used to have). Dunno if it still has the enhanced teleportation though.

Re-read Ultimates 2. The whole "man-made" thing was a lie told by Loki. He was using his magic to fool people. He was tricking the world into believing his falsehoods. It was all illusion and chicanery. At the end of the story we see the truth: That Thor was always what he claimed to be. That Asgard was always what he claimed it to be. That Mjolnir was always what he claimed it to be.

Those scenes where we saw those scientists building Mjolnir never took place. They were all a trick.

Ultimates 2 reveals this, Thor is brought in jail, then Asgard comes to the rescue in the finale and Thor now has legit Asgard gear at the end.

Ultimates 3/4/Ultimatum fucked it all up by making Thor look completely like his 616 version, including a hammer that looks like 616 Mjolnir. This is later retconned as such:

Ultimates... whatever the fuck, the one with Reed and his Future City, had them kill all of Asgard and the World Tree. Thor loses all his Asgardian powers including the 616 looking Mjolnir. No world tree means no asgardian powers.

So then Stark gives him his old tech gear back; now he is back to being a human with powered armour and tech hammer.

Now they fucked it up AGAIN by making the technological warhammer be the mystical hammer.

It's obviously a Loki lie. Millar left his origins a little vague in the first volume. In the second volume we see Thor asserting continuously that he's the real deal while contrary evidence is thrown in our faces. At the end, the hosts of Asgard show up to fight Loki alongside Thor, vindicating all of his claims and showing he was telling the truth all along.

There were later fuckups like Loeb and Hickman messing with that original story, but it's plain if you read the first two volumes what the real story was supposed to be. There was even a scene early in Ultimates 2 where Volstagg visits Thor and is like "You can feel it, can't you? The backdrop is shifting all around us. The story is being changed..." It was all foreshadowed.

He was Alien on a planet where everything had gone to shit.
