>The world of Pixar is expanding in a big, dead, musical way in November 2017.

>Coco is Pixar’s next original movie, and it’s the sole novel film for the studio over the next few years as production ramps up for Cars 3 (due in June 2017) and, later, The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4.

>Since Coco’s announcement in 2012, little has been known about the film other than its central themes — it takes place in Mexico on the annual holiday Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead — and its filmmakers: Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson, and co-director Adrian Molina). But here’s the Coco content you’ve been waiting for: EW took a recent trip to Pixar and can now reveal a few additional details about the music-packed-but-not-quite-“musical” film.

>First, the voice cast: Benjamin Bratt and Gael García Bernal will lead Coco alongside newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, who will voice the film’s main character, a 12-year-old Mexican boy named Miguel. Gonzalez was hired after serving as Miguel’s scratch voice during early development, proving himself indispensable to both the filmmakers and the character. Character actress Renée Victor also joins the cast as Abuelita, Miguel’s grandmother.

>However, to understand whom Bratt and Bernal are voicing, it helps to get a little context. What’s Coco even about?

>Coco follows the secret musical ambitions of Miguel, who resides in a lively, loud Mexican village but comes from a family of shoemakers that may be the town’s only music-hating household. For generations, the Riveras have banned music because they believe they’ve been cursed by it; as their family history goes, Miguel’s great-grandfather abandoned his wife decades earlier to follow his own dreams of performing, leaving Imelda (Miguel’s great-grandmother) to take control as the matriarch of the now-thriving Rivera line and declare music dead to the family forever.
>>
>But Miguel harbors a secret desire to seize his musical moment, inspired by his favorite singer of all time, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Bratt). It’s only after Miguel discovers an amazing link between himself and De la Cruz that he takes action to emulate the famous singer and, in doing so, accidentally enters the Land of the Dead.

>In the beautiful underworld, it’s not long until Miguel encounters the souls of his own family — generations’ worth of long-dead but no less vivacious Rivera ancestors, including great-grandmother Imelda. Still, given the opportunity to roam around the Land of the Dead, Miguel decides to track down De la Cruz himself. He teams up with another friendly (and skeletal) spirit — a trickster named Hector, voiced by Bernal — to find De la Cruz, earn his family’s blessing to perform, and return to the Land of the Living before time runs out.

>Phew.

>“It was important to us from day one that we had an all-Latino cast,” says Unkrich, who with producer Anderson shepherded Toy Story 3 to become the world’s second highest-grossing animated film. “It focused us, and we ended up with a fantastic mix of people — some from Mexico and some from Los Angeles.”

>Bratt was cast relatively early on — Unkrich says he was the first, in fact — but Bernal took some more internal legwork. “Gael was someone we were considering early on, but I didn’t know if I’d be able to sell him [to Pixar chief John Lasseter] because he’s done so many films I’ve loved through the years, but he hadn’t really done comedy,” Unkrich tells EW. “Thankfully, our casting director said, ‘Have you seen this new show that Gael’s in?’ And it was Mozart in the Jungle, and I started watching and thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s so funny, he’s so charming, and he’s perfect.’ So, thank God for Mozart. It didn’t take any convincing on John’s part.”

>Meanwhile, Gonzalez is a newcomer triple-threat who does all his own singing in the movie and came to the filmmakers’ attention during a nationwide search for Miguel — and not just as the character’s final voice, but his scratch (or temporary) one. “We actually had another kid doing scratch for Miguel who’s now 17 or 18, which should tell you how long we’ve been working on the movie, but his voice changed long ago, and it was actually in trying to find a new voice for the scratch that we found Anthony,” says Unkrich.

>EW’s got plenty more Coco coming your way to tide you over until the film is released on Nov. 22, 2017. In the meantime, whet your Pixar appetite with Cars 3, dropping June 16, 2017.

I thought for a film centered around such a rich and colorful culture they'd go for at least a LITTLE bit more interesting art direction. This is the most generic looking kid ever. And his name is Miguel, no less.
The Book of Life wasn't a very good movie overall but at least the art direction & character design were incredibly unique & well executed. I guess I'm just getting really, really worn out on the generic 3DCG animated film character design we see getting regurgitated every year. I've been spoiled by Laika's designs.

Nah, if anything I think /co/ will be to harsh on it. Ever since Pixar started doing sequels, they've become a fallen angel of sorts to the eyes of many here. So if anything I expect people to see it as worse then it may be.

Cars was bland bullshit. It was a fucking re-hash of an 80's movie plot except with anthropomorphic cars.

Up on the other hand was offensively bad: awful characters, weak story, schizophrenic and manipulative plot that didn't know whether it was an adventure comedy or a melodrama, lifted jokes and concepts, crap action, a crap villain, and a weak ending.

Sounds shitty. Also I'm sure the social media back and forth over this will be incredibly obnoxious what with Trump's open antagonism to illegal immigration meaning anything even vaguely hispanic related, let alone something like this, becomes ground zero for inane political banter.

Is it created by Jorge R Gutierrez?

Yeah then they ended up hiring the guy that complained to them. I guess that's all you need to do to get a job at Disney

>In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.

I fucking knew I was being memed.

>Ever since Pixar started doing sequels, they've become a fallen angel of sorts to the eyes of many here
/co/ has been fucking salty as shit over Pixar ever sense Brave won the Oscar over Wreck-it-Ralph the sequels have jack shit to do with anything especially given we just got done with a barrage of Toy Story sequels from the last decade and two Cars movies also /co/ shat on Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur as well hell they're still trying to push Finding Dory as being worse than shit here while praising Zootopia and Moana.

>I fucking knew I was being memed.
How about actually watching The Book of Life? That description leaves out a lot.
>>
>>88228349
It doesn't. I watched the film and the plots are nothing alike. Fuck Book of Life was a gfucking romantic comedy
>>
>>88228349

Not really.

Mostly it's the fact that the MC of both is a musician who comes from a non-musician family and goes against their family traditions because of it.

sounds so much like book of life to me
meh

neat
>>
>>88211353
That and the whole "I love music but muh family hates music" sounds like Book of Life.

>>88210675
I hope too because even if Book of Life had soul and a good understanding of Mexican culture (and Mexican inside jokes) the plot left a lot to be desire.
>>
>>88212812
Didn't he make his Spider outfit out of a Dia de Muertos costume?
>>
>>88213005
Zorro is not even Mexican it's from New Spain era and in California (which was in Mexico).

But Dia de Muertos is what the US and other countries are liking right now.

That said Mexico has a lot of folklore especially when it comes to Ghost and occult creepy type of stories, like La Llorona, El Cucuy, and the Legend of the Black Charro, Guanajuato Mummies (which are real but there are interesting stories around them), the hairy hand, the nahuales (Mexican skinwalkers), the island of the dolls (very creepy place), the lechuza (black owl), etc...

Then there are the urban legends like that infamous creepy tomb with a giant tree growing on top of it in the Belen Cemetery which people say that if you cut down the tree the vampire inside of it will wake up.

Honestly there's a lot of untaped story material and potential there...

>Anyone else feel Book of Life was a literal whitewash of Mexican culture?

Seriously? It had like 3 non-Latino actors and a lot of unknown Mexican actors (and I don't mean Mexican Americans) lending their voices, La Muerte was even voiced by Kate del Castillo (Mexican actress who is probably more known by gringos because of a scandal with El Chapo and Sean Penn) also Derbez voice cameos

There were also a lot of jokes that where completely missed if you weren't Mexican or Hispanic/Latino, like stuff with Derbez and Placido Domingo singing Cielito Lindo, the joke about Tijuana (although you don't need to be Mexican to get that one).

Also the whole family traditions being important, younger Mexican wanting to break away from tradition while the older ones want them to follow said traditions, small visual cues like Virgen de Guadalupe statues in the background.

It's probably one of the most Mexican movies I've seen on the cinema and the only one I can recall that didn't center on narcos, chicanos, cholos, illegals or Mexican-American shit.
>>
>>88210913
That's all you'll get so long as Americans think Mexico is nothing but Tijuana and desert.
It's baffling event, because both Cancun and Mexico City get ridiculously high numbers of American tourists every year. Cancun is in the middle of the fucking jungle and Mexico City is half Chicago, half temperate forest.

But no, Mexico is a desert, everything is brown and dusty, and all towns look like abandoned native-american reservations..
>>
>>88213117
Actually, it's easier to be murdered in Atlanta than in Mexico City and we have 20 times the population density.
>>
>>88214082
This may surprise you, but a shitload of hispanics are white.
Hispanic is not a race.
>>
>>88233634
Yeah, Book of Life was legit.

The only whiteness that bled through the movie was the weird choice of using modern pop songs in a movie set in magical fantasy Mexico (Radiohead? Seriously?)
>>
>>88210652
Why do big studios think people care about mexican "culture"?
>>
>>88235033
Well, they tried to make a movie based on white culture, but it turns out no one wanted to watch a movie about a bunch of jerks stealing someone else's land and taking credit for all their discoveries.
>>
literally Happy Feet with spics
>>
>>88211539
As long as it doesn't rip off the part where The Book of Life was a huge disappointment, I'm fine with it.
>>
>>88210652
Sounds awful and also like that one Cartoon Network youtube pilot.

I love how /co/ doesn't bat an eye when Hollywood and the comic industry reuse the plot "guy with superpowers fights a villain" thousands of times, but make two movies based on Day of the Dead and they start screaming about unoriginality.
>>
>>88235406
Its because super heros (good guys who save others) is a white people thing, so /co/ accepts it.

Hiro Hamada + Riley Andersen + Tanning

prove me wrong
>>
>>88236425
So Riley was... yellowed? ...is there even a name for when white girls go for Asian guys?

Hafu guys make good traps in best case scenarios, but hafu girls are hot as hell.
