I definitely agree, Steven Universe used to have very tight writing. There was so much fucking POTTERY it was insane.

I definitely think we've gone past Sugar's initial SU pitch, and the consequence is that is these newer episodes have been more scattershot. And I do blame the extended cast for this, you can't add, develop and redeem 3 new characters and make it both good and entertaining. Zuke's fucking mess with Lapis and Peridot is exhibit A with that.

I beg to differ, what Lion is for example has gotten very few new hints even since his introduction, and the fanbase has as a result exhausted nearly every decent theory regarding that. When you have a big emotional moment, usually that means the issue is closed.
Like, imagine we did have some heartfelt cluster story. We learn about all the individual gems, their roles in the war, their friends and maybe their fusion choices. Steven pours his heart out trying to convince them that their struggle right now is more harmful to everyone in the long run, that they must stop trying to come back so that others might live.
A sacrifice on a grand scale with just the glimmer of hope that "maybe" steven will learn how to repair gems?

I just ran through the numbers, if they had just aired a single episode every Thursday, starting the week that the Summer of Steven began, then last Thursday would have been The Kindergarten Kid, due to Thanksgiving resulting in a skipped Thursday. I have to admit, I liked Pearl a lot more in season 1 when she was more like a bossy older sister than a goofy mom. The "warm, laid back" feeling was done well with character's story's and arcs in season 1 and 2 because the episodes that would best pull from those feelings were the episodes focusing on characters interacting and growing. It's why The Test was such a great episode despite a total lack of any type of lore. Not him but I think it was mostly the townie episodes, they often had gem related stuff happen that would drive the characters Steven interacts with to do SOMETHING. Something they wouldn't normally do and would remind us that while these people have learned that ignoring gem stuff is usually for the best they are still affected by it and gem stuff is apart of the world and these people's lives, it just helped everything feel connected in a way that the new episodes don't cover much anymore.

These characters are good but they're also just regular people, they need the outside alien forces to push them to react outside their comfort zone, which would help prop them up and endear them to us when we see that people are affected by this stuff.

In Gem Drill earthquakes were happening as they were getting in the drill and the ride took 2 hours. That's 2 solid hours of earthquakes around the world, yet we saw nothing affected by that, like the human world is entirely separated from the activities of the gems. Compare this to the episodes after Jailbreak, where the rubble from the ship was around for ages and there had to be clean up, showing the world is affected by these events.

The writing is generally lazier. There's exceptions, like Monster Reunion, but more episodes have much more awkward dialog and much less interesting plot or character progress. Even then the exceptions mostly show up in self contained episodes that are poorly connected to the ongoing story.

Compare Amethyst's arc to, say, Sardonyx's arc. Amethyst interacts with exclusively Steven and Jasper in a meaningful way and the individual episode plots feel like they simply exist to force out this character progress. Jasper just shows up randomly while Pearl and Garnet are gone, then talks shit to Amethyst, and retreats. It makes the episode feel like it's exclusively there to prompt Amethyst to feel like shit about not being a proper quartz, all while Steven is the only one who actually talks to her about it. Earlier in the show, it felt more natural when characters would end up in plots to progress themselves as characters. Pearl fucked up HARD with Sardonyx. It felt like it was Pearl reaching into her worst traits because she was exploiting an opportunity that was presented to her. Then everyone had a chance to weigh in on it, followed by an actual resolution where Pearl learns to respect herself more and we see the effects of this are when she fights Peridot in Back to the Barn.

Maybe Amethyst just had a weak arc, and the crew can do better, but it's essentially all we got for the entirety of season 3 as far as character progression, so I'm not inspired with a lot of confidence when every season prior had a few character's progressing.

I have other complaints, but that's why I feel like the shows quality in general has gone downhill rather than it just being the case of a few bad episodes.

I can see why Garnet has been held off for so long, it's just now that Steven has matured enough to be able to handle all the complex leadership issues Garnet has and how he can see she isn't the super-strong and super perfect person she tries to be, her arc should be coming up very soon. Amethyst has her issues all spread out throughout the show, but Steven has to catch her at the right moment where she completely breaks down, she's much more guarded than Pearl. Pearl's issues actually seem to be finishing up now that she has mostly accepted that Rose is gone, Steven is here, and Greg and other humans aren't all that bad. I don't expect her to get much more focus, many one last arc to tie everything together. It should leave ample room for the other characters like Garnet and Lapis to finally get the spotlight.

Thats not the issue, per-se. Rather, you shouldn't add two new characters to the main cast when the original cast isnt thoroughly developed, and not have the new cast have some kind of conflict.

The issue with this show is there's no clear conflict. I suppose we're waiting for it, and when it comes I'll be interested. But right now, this show is: "explore the average life of Steven Universe." There's nothing going on.

At least in the first season, there was corrupt gems to deal with. Now there's no conflict, the show skips over conflict, to either hide it later (presumably Lapis with the Crystal Gems) or resolve it in an episode (Lapis and Peridot).

I've never seen a show with such fascinating characters, and an inability to keep the conflict center.
