I actually speculated about why Newgrounds fizzled out before. I came to the following conclusion:
It served as a wholesome community hub before individual parts bled off to other competitors that offered better incentives for people (and money). Don't forget that what people were making on Newgrounds they were making for free. Newgrounds itself was just a website that made money through hosting ads and offered no real incentives for content creators to stick around until much later after the site practically entered hibernation mode.

>Flash games began being replaced by mobile games
>Flash as a platform itself began intentionally being killed off by mobile and the god-awfulness of Adobe
>Animators went to youtube
>Musicians went to youtube/beatport/soundcloud/bandcamp

For game makers:

>steam surged in popularity as a platform and served as an accessible marketplace for indie devs to peddle their garbage
>amateur game development branched off into mobile or steam, with mobile being a new and alluring wild west

Of course, things kind of went to shit across the board over the years. I wonder where the next big internet boom will take us and where the creative people will congregate next. It's fascinating to think about the fact that practically all memorable NG flash games were made by people that ended up being pretty good game devs in their own right.
