The rivalry is entirely in Doom's head. He was always jealous of Reed's work and Reed was critical of Doom's rushed experiments.

The story's changed/evolved over time. The one that I know the most about is that one day one of Doom's projects blew up in his face and left him with a mild injury. He couldn't stand to see his face "so disfigured" so he ran off to get that mask made to cover it. But he couldn't wait for it to cool and just slapped it on his face, damaging it even more in the heat.

Which of course he blamed on Richards. And here we are. That's why Doom never truly beats the Fantastic Four, because he gets off on showing Reed that he's better. If he were to kill them he'd have no one to best.

Reed beat Doom at magic in Waid's run. It turns out that Reed just really likes his science.
Doom is actually weaker in magic compared to others because the mechanics of magic (as a TLDR) eventually go into having to ASK for help and Doom needs noone.

Think of it this way. In terms of science Doom is #2, with Reed being #1. In terms of magic Doom is also #2, with Dr. Strange being #1. But he can use he can mix up his skills with each to make himself a credible threat with others. His ability doesn't come from being the best in a specific way but being the best in a general way.

In one of the stories, he creates a drug that makes people trip balls and see the worst possible thing that could happen to them, uses it on the FF. Sue sees Reed cheat on her. Ben and Johnny see eachother betray and attack eachother. Reed never takes it, but he tricks Victor into drinking it.

Vic sees himself actually defeating and killing Reed in a battle of wits. And this was Lee/Kirby era story too.
