really not a fan of that "hair"

>>88129372
I'll probably go away by the end, since this is suppose to bridge Nu52 and Rebirth Nate, and he has his traditional design on the latter.
>>
Do we know how long this is supposed to be? A mini? Full ongoing? What's the deal
I feel like this would have a lot of potential as a mini

>>88129460
>>88129464
Nice
Looking forward to this
>>
>>88129484
It's supposed to deal with the transition to Rebirth, so I can see them getting a bit meta with it.
>>
>>88129484
Considering that Doctor Manhattan is a ersatz of Captain Atom, I would not be surprised if the mini's Climax is the confirming reveal.
>>
>>88129680
>Considering that Doctor Manhattan is a ersatz of Captain Atom

That's why I asked. If they don't do more with him here it probably won't be till the next event
>>
>>88129729
>>88129680
Honestly I don't want this to deal with the overall universe and stuff
I want this to be a rise and fall of captain atom
I hope it's got feels
I hope it has a nice ending
I'm really hopeful for this mini
I'm worried my expectations may be too high though
>>
>>88128957
>>88128979
Weisman, you cheeky bastard.
>>
>>88129907
>I want this to be a rise and fall of captain atom

You got the name of the series backwards. It is /Fall/ then /Rise/.

Manhattan is basically a version of Captain Atom that mostly understands his powers, a perfect antagonist for the Captain.

The story will likely focus on Atom's lack of control (the fall) for the first few issues and then focus on him unlocking his full potential (the rise).
>>
>>88129729
I always was under the impression that Capt. Atom was weaker but I don't know much about him and Manhattan.
>>
>>88130492
Watchmen was originally going to be a story that used the Charlton Comics characters (Captain Atom included) DC had just gotten after buying them from the dying company. DC decided to save the characters for something else and Alan Moore opted to continue the project with slightly altered replacements.

Manhattan is Captain Atom with a name change and slightly modified origin story.
>>
>>88129680
>tfw ending has this Atom, Manhattan and Pax Americana's Captain Atom
I wonder how long would it take for them to drive Nathaniel nuts.
>>
I hope they end up returning Nate to his power levels from the 80's run. I never liked him becoming Manhattan-lite and preferred him to have control over the alien-powered skin. It keeps him powerful, but not godlike.

Is 2016 the year where Weisman finally broke the curse?
>>
How is Bates and Weisman previous Captain Atom run?
>>
>>88131521
Pretty damn good. It gets a little weird with some of the special guests and I didn't care for the more trippy metaphysical stuff, but it had a lot of ambitious ideas that came together, compelling character interactions, and tightly constructed plots that took advantage of every character and plot point.

The entire run can be bought online, or you can just track down the JSA Storytime threads. It was storytimed earlier this year.

God this page is fucking great. Really puts the violence to that moment of transformation.
>>
>>88129680
>>88130404
If you read the Weisman/Bates I think he's quite different from the Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen. He never has the same outlook as Dr. Manhattan, never comes to understand himself as inhuman or loses his connection to his fellow human beings. He never quite has the same mastery of his powers either.

I don't know if that'll hold up here ofc but straight away we see that Captain Atom is physically disintegrating, and that General Eiling and Dr. Megala both see a mental element to this >>88128979. But while Nate thinks he's losing his humanity on that same page he's showing the same traits they're familiar with and making sure to reaffirm his human bond with Dr. Megala. Shit, even that "see you on the other side". Nate's a religious guy, again something very different from Dr. Manhattan.

I'm very excited for this. The Weisman/Bates run is so good and these initial pages here are almost a primer to how the characters were throughout that run.
>>
>>88132571
I'm also appreciating the >>88129035
>quantum fever
Throwing quantum onto random words is a time-honoured Atom tradition.
>>
>>88131521
It's honestly amazing. The characterization is so on point and the series is by parts so deft and clever but never obnoxiously. Like the multiple identity stuff/identity conflict it does with Atom himself is spot-on, or the weird meta-place Dr. Spectro occupies after adopting the identity of a fake villain written by General Eiling making up a background for Captain Atom as a superhero to announce him to the public.. Eiling is a spectacular villain.

Later a planned crossover event ends the book and the last few steps are a bit awkward as I think they rush through what they would have planned for longer arcs and development. But it's well worth reading if you like capes even a little bit.
>>
wait, wasn't Adam still stuck in the future?

It's Cary Bates and Greg Weisman, same writers as the 80s series.

Captain atom is an universe buster. For some reason Waid and Johns really don't like him.

That's why cap atom fans are mad about Manhattan in the mainstream universe since will clearly mean they will nerf cap to no end. Captain atom created and destroyed his own universe once. He can turn off the powers of people like firestorm.

And that's. Or even including monarch
>>
>>88138596
some of us have been bitchy about the tend to make Cap into a Manhattan clone (that explodes all the time) for a long time now. The more limited metal-skin powerset is more interesting.
>>
>>88136595
I think it's just following from the Nu52 where they made Eiling black. They would get flack if they made him white again, so Weisman just made him Keith David.
>>
>>88139035
The cap atom series was great, and there's nothing Manhattan about him.
>>
>>88139571
I know this, yes
>>
>>88139035
Bates and Weisman throwing a snide glance at that in this very preview tho
>>
>>88139035
In other words superman fans don't want captain atom to be more powerful that the blue boy.
>>
>>88139086
I guess I'm just thinking back to the one we got storytimed on /co/ and how in that Nate and Jeff were great friends, but Nate did have a race issue and wasn't comfortable with him dating his daughter - and not just cause of the age gap.

Whereas Eiling was outright called on his racism by one of his junior officers, but at the same time who can say what is true and what's a bluff from Eiling? He had two of his subordinates completely under the thumb, believing just what he wanted them to believe, and for much of the series struggled to do the same thing with Nate.

But if Eiling is black all that shifts. The attitudes don't necessarily have to be different, but the reasons and personalities might well be. Eiling is establishment through-and-through, and he's worked and sacrificed to get there. You can even see his final goal as his wanting to become the establishment he's adopted. So he might look down on others who have more of an open, personal identity even in terms of race.

Is Pat Broderick still around?
>>
>>88140730
From 2014

Pat Broderick began working as a DC Comics penciller in the early seventies, straight out of high school, as well as working for Atlas and Marvel, including Captain Marvel and Micronauts. He co-created the Creature Commandos, launched The Fury Of Firestorm in 1982, Captain Atom and drew Batman Year Three as well as Swamp Thing and Green Lantern in the nineties, before returning to Marvel for Alpha Flight and Doom 2099.

Then the comic book market collapsed and in 1995 Broderick moved into advertising as lead of Tracy Locke’s creative department, which also led to him working on the Jimmy Neutron movie.

But returning to comics was harder. Peacekeepers from Future Comics was cancelled. And a revival of Micronauts was cancelled three issues in. But yesterday, on Facebook, Broderick had an update.

Pat Broderick I’m back at DC comics after a twenty year separation.

Pat Broderick can’t say yet, but after the script arrives in two weeks…I think there won’t be a problem, But this is true, Dan Didio worked his magic and brought me home.. feel free, in fact, hit share and label it “Friends” and post,,please

not exactly, it's more that "Nate is more interesting with the powerset and background that he had in Bates/Weisman and you can do more thematically with it that's unique and compelling"

some day, there will be "the subsequent career of Nate" on /co/
>>
>>88140751
Thanks. I had a ton of the comics he worked upon. In fact, I prefer his art on the Green Lantern series from the 1990's compared to Mark Bright's. One of the artists I've always liked regarding their style. Similar to my great appreciation for Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, Craig Hamilton, Mike Wieringo (RIP), Scott Kollins, Norm Breyfogle, Joe Staton, John Byrne, and also George Perez.

You need to understand that Captain Atom (Nathaniel Adam) is actually version 3 of the character.

Captain Atom (Allen Adam) by Charlton Comics was version 1 killed off in Crisis of the Infinite Earths.
Doctor Manhattan (Jonathan Osterman) was the edgy dark version 2.
Captain Atom (Nathaniel Adam) is actually the lighter softer and toned down version 3.

This is brilliant:D

>>88129019

And Captain Atom seems incredibly polite to what must be a desk jockey (fairly sure no one in his own mustering jnr or senior would allow any form of self doubt to form in his mind while actively deployed in an autonomous capacity when there's no place for feeling anything except bullet proof) questioning his operational decisions in the field especially over open comms;j

Very cool \_o_/'`
>>
>>88162051
Dr. Megala isn't military, he's a scientist behind the process that made Nate Captain Atom.

Incidentally I would really like to see Babylon again.
>>
>>88162093
Ah... by him having a close personal relationship or at least an intimate understanding of Cpt. Atom's thought processes knows that's exactly the correct thing for him to hear to focus and produce optimal results...perhaps;)

I thank you kindly, despite them being the properly intelligent ones in the bigger picture it's rare the white coats run on the ground (I guess being the smart ones it makes sense that they know better than having to deal with that stressful noise of bureaucracy it would entail)
>>
Thanks for posting, anon!
I'm psyched, Ijust watched though JLU and Natahanial has to be one of my favorite support heroes in the show. I don't know why, I'm an oppositnally defiant bastard but something about boyscout characters appeals to me. I think it's that when it comes down to it they usually end up saying "fuck authority" and doing the right thing anyway, getting themselves into more trouble for the sake of others.

Just read the first three issues of Bates/Weisman run. It was good. I hope this will live up to it's potential.
>>
>>88128918

I find the character to be uninteresting in a comic universe that already has both Firestorm and now Doctor Manhattan included. The analogue has replaced the original in most readers' minds.

Watchmen is the Alan Moore comic. The metaplot in Rebirth for DC, which we haven't really got to yet, involves Dr. Manhattan. People are theorizing Captain Atom will be involved because Watchmen was originally supposed to use Captain Atom in Dr. Manhattan's place, but ultimately they didn't use the Charlton characters and Moore invented original ones who were analogues.
>>
>>88163377

So yeah he's gonna go boom, i think eveyone already expects that. His weakness is he's kind of a glass canon, his only material matter being his containment suit being the only thing that keeps him from reaching his final form of mushroom cloud.
And nobody will be surprised when it turns out he sacrifices himself for the greater good, either.
I'm wondering how the Rise part of the equation will work out.

>>88163841
Waid started the "all Captain Atom does is explode, causing massive collateral damage" meme with Kingdom Come and since then, that's all writers ever want to do with him. He wasn't like that before.
>>
>>88163637
That quantum elemental shit was post-Weisman Ostrander, trying to fit it with that weird and ultimately unsuccessful Firestorm revamp, before ARMAGEDDON 2001 fucked everything up.
>>
>>88163776
But his suit is as durable as Superman, as the other anon said this meme needs to end, Waid and Johns dislike cap atom for different reasons and found him a pain in the ass so they liked to turn into a bomb. But the whole piercing thing isn't something you would found in his own series
>>
>>88163967
Armageddon really ruined everything
>>
>>88162913
If this show reverts him to pre-Armageddon levels, the comparisons will not be valid. He won't be a shitty energy being anymore.
>>
>>88163932
Huh. Same guy here,
Im only familliar with him on JLU so far and it wasn't so much a gimmick on there but kind of his weakness, if he gets too fucked up boom, so does everything. You can't have a character made out of nuclear fusion held together by a suit without that being his main weakness. Wgy the hell don't people bitch about batman only going out at night as a meme, if that's acceptable logic.
Sorry that science caught up to the fiction but consequences exist.
>>
>>88164281
He already had a weakness, though. He can't absorb too energy or else he involuntarily travels forward in time.

Not to mention he can still be wounded with the right material, like X-Ionized metal.
>>
>>88164028
Okay, so how was Nathaniel vulnerable in any way whatsoever before Waid and Johns? Because this sounds like silver age captain boomerang willing boomerangs into existance tier bullshit.
>>
>>88164281
Its a shitty weakness, his weakness being the fluctuations of his powers, that he can absorb too much energy too fast or he jumps in time is far better.
>>
>>88164353
Beat me to the question >>88164334
Still pretty silver age level retarded. Why doesnt the flash travel forward in time when he does anything involving his power by that same logic? Im assuming they're using the theory of relativity and whatnot to justify this?
>>
I don't know much about Captain Atom or Doctor Manhatten, but the vibe I'm getting is that Manhatten is like a darker and edgier version of Atom, like his shadow-archetype, and thus in whatever massive event happens in DC Rebirth, Captain Atom and Doctor Manhatten will fight a physical and psychological battle?
>>
>>88163932
Plus the idea that he can't switch between metal skin and human form, that he's just energy inside the suit.
>>
>>88164488
Not really, monarch and shadow Captain atom are his dark versions
>>
>>88164396
The Ostrander stuff kind of makes sense because there's a strong implication in the Bates/Weisman stuff that Captain Atom is pretty limitlessly powerful, potentially. He's tapped into a quantum field that essentially comprises all existence, so it's quite possible that in the most detailed understanding of things he is a pure energy being positioning himself in a physical existence (really, multiple physical existences). But that's all theory from the Bates/Weisman stuff alone, Nate can't manipulate it, and functionally he's a normal human guy out of time who can turn on his super suit.

The explosion that created him flung him forward in time bound in the metal skin in the first place. When he's exposed to similarly huge amounts of radiation, he's pushed forward in time again.
>>
>>88164864
And you lose a lot of potential when he can't turn the metal skin on/off because that nixes the human/more-than-human things he struggles with, which tie into the multiple identities and the Man Out Of Time bit. It's like why Ultra Boy and Superboy have different thematic emphases.
>>
>>88165305
Yeah, you can have a lot more going on than the silver suit. It's not like Nate even has a single human identity outside of it. You mentioned it, and I'm pretty interested in how this mini takes on the Man Out Of Time element.
