Honestly, if it wasn't for these, I would never get this interested in american comics, or comics in general, period.
Back then, my read was pretty casual and was only consisted in french-belgian comics, like Tin-Tin and Blake & Mortimer, and Disney comics (the Carl Barks/Don Rosa stuff. Always skipped the shitty italian stories).
First time I knew about these was with the extras' section in Sonic Mega Collection for GC. Got really fascinated with Spaz's cover art.
Was lucky enough to start to read them at first hand at the middle of the Iron Dominion story arc. Thought the story was cool and got really interested on some elements of the lore.
Got really into it after the Genesis arc. Naugus taking over the Acorn Kingdom, St. John being revealed as a double-agent, Mecha Sally, all the FF members getting crossed out of the map, one-by-one, etc. The story building was amazing. Shame all that was flushed out after The Pendering.
After that, I gave up on Sonic comics and started to explore other titles.
From what I remember, everything outside of Flynn's run is complete shit, and I've heard that the new universe's stories are pretty great. Probably one day i'll reread Flynn's run if it still holds up.
Hope he gets to release his Lost Hedgehog Tales bible.

To former SatAm and to a lesser AoSTH fans it was the only thing keeping Sonic especially during the dry spell of the Sega Saturn era

I kind of wish the comic community could get over Penders. I get why he's always brought up, his story is an insane and very entertaining one, but he doesn't deserve the attention he gets and sometimes I just want to talk about the comic itself without getting into the drama of its creators. I like the comic as a fun adventure title, with a very colorful setting that's taken way too long to get fully integrated over dull forests and the most generic versions of standard biomes to exist.

It was settled out of court, the end result is he can publish the Mary-Su chronicles. But he can't use Knuckles and the characters need to be redesigned for him to use them, hence the redesigns.

Archie can also use "his" characters now, but they have to pay him licensing, which they're not gonna do so those characters aren't coming back.

I do wonder what happened with Scourge though, since he tried to take that character. I'm gonna be really bummed if he never comes back. I tweeted Flynn early in the reboot asking if the character would ever be back, and he just non-committally said any multiverse shenanigans are long off for now story wise.

Because in typical proceedings, you write a contract out and everybody signs it whenever there's licensing that spells out where all the copyright for everything involved goes. Because they couldn't prove that Penders signed the contract giving the rights of everything he wrote for Archie and Sega to Archie and Sega, they couldn't say that he didn't have rights to everything he wrote (which is the default state for everything.) And since the comics were published by Archie under Sega's approval, they couldn't say they didn't approve of him doing it.

What I wanted to say was that I only read french-belgian classics AND Disney Comics back then.
Then, Sonic comics introduced me to OTHER american titles - mainly capeshit, which is unpopular and seen as american back where I come from, even if the comic's origin isn't necessarily from american soil. If it's superhero-related, it's american. Case closed.

Ian has difficulty establishing things himself, if he can build off another writers work he's great but if he's gotta do it himself it can be sketchy at best.

Which also applies to the reboot, he's GREAT whenever he's working with the Sega stuff (Champions being so heavily Sega is no coincidence) but his own worldbuilding, while it is good, falls into some of the formulaic pitfalls that the old book did. I'm glad that other writers are slowly being introduced into the series, Aleah Baker I feel actually does a better job with original material.

Also it's really good to be out of that shitty ten page mandate, that was ruining the stories more than anything else could.
