Why didn't the Green Lantern ring choose Superman /co/? Isn't he impervious to 99% to anything the physical world throws at him? Pretty sure he's almost without fear.
>>
Hal was closer.
>>
It's not about being without fear, it's about overcoming great fear.
>>
>>88120747
In Up Up and Away this very thing happened, although it was Clark who received the ring, not Superman.
>>
>>88120747

Probably because the guardians wouldn't want to deal with trying to control someone who was already powerful enough to destroy them without ring magic.
>>
Proximity and urgency. Abin Sur was dying and needed to impart a message before passing. So Hal was the closest and fastest option.
>>
>>88120845
in other words, fate had a different plan for Hal Jordan.
>>
>>88121334

And Guy Gardner, because according to the ring Guy Garner was the ideal candidate, but since Abin Sur didn't had much time and needed to pass his message the ring got Hal because he was closer.

There was a rule about giving the ring to a non-native species. That's what this says.

I'd like to think the Guardians have this rule so less developed worlds don't end up having some random alien as their lantern. It probably sits better to have someone from the local population picked.
>>
>>88121444
But what if space sectors have several inhabited worlds?

I think this was also a story that retconned that Hal actually didn't have the ability to feel fear because Abin Sur removed it from his brain prior to giving him the ring. The better reasoning is that Hal is just older than Superman.

>>

>I think this was also a story that retconned that Hal actually didn't have the ability to feel fear because Abin Sur removed it from his brain prior to giving him the ring
yeah that was a PAD story from Action Comics Weekly and it's never been brought up again (for good reason, it's dumb)
>>
>>88120747
Because Superman gets his power from our yellow sun, and the ring is weak to the color yellow. So Clark would've traded his Superman powers for Green Lantern powers. That's a very bad trade if you ask me.
>>
>>88122017

It's not that Batman doesn't have the will-power, but rather that he won't forgive or forget. He's the type of dude that use the time his parents died as pass-word. He's always nurturing pain and fear.
>>
>>88122017
He's basically the exact thing the Rings were designed to fight.
>>
>>88122110
Sodam Yat also derives power from a yellow sun and he's a Green Lantern. And isn't the yellow weakness not a thing anymore?
>>

Supes picks up a yellow ring from Sinestro in Injustice since it's powered by fear -- namely the fear of everyone on the planet.

Also he was probably twelve sectors away battling space bugs.
>>

I'm not sure how canon the story is, but wasn't Tomar Re the Lantern of Krypton when it blew up, and the Guardians prioritized protecting it because they projected that the son of Jor-El would make a great GL, but when it all goes down and he becomes Superman, protector of the universe, they're just like "Eh, close enough."

That's why Batman's constantly feeling guilty about everything. Dude cares and feels too much. He just doesn't show or doesn't know how to express.

I can see the whole "overcoming the trauma and moving on" as a set-back when it comes to Batman.

Say that Hal can use the ring because he overcome his father's death and his fears. He put it all behind him and now he's in a better place. Let's say that for you to use the ring you need to muster pure unaltered willpower.

Batman certainly can't and won't do that. He won't overcome and move past his parent's death. Their death will always serve as a motivation and constant focus so that he can muster the willpower to go on. Tap that horrible night and the emotions they stir in him like fear, outrage, rage and so on. That could serve as a good reason for why he can't use the ring. Because his willpower comes from a very dark and muddle place filled with conflicting and wild emotions.

One good reason for Superman to be a poor fit for a Green Lantern's Power Ring is that Superman, despite being confident and courageous, doesn't really flex his will all that much. Most of the time he's holding himself back, not pushing forward. He's optimistic and courageous, but rarely have to push his body and soul to the breaking point.
>>
>>88126299
As was pointed out in this thread several times... not only do they regret him getting the ring but other, better, choices were out there. There just wasn't time/proximity to find them. With Superman it's more obvious he couldn't be controlled. Especially considering how pragmatic (read they'll sell you out in a heartbeat to serve their own purposes) the Guardians can be and considering how idealistic Superman is.
>>
Will power isn't about not feeling fear, its about overcoming it

Never feeling it actually makes you weaker in this case.

Are you only strong when you have cheat mode engaged in life, or are you strong even when its a risk to yourself personally and you don't stand a chance. Are you Superman where you can stand fearless because the world is made out of cardboard to you, or are you Dan Turpin who calls Darkseid a shit to his face and dies for it.
>>
>>88122017
He kinda doesn't, he doesn't want to overcome it, he needs that fear.
>>
>>88126403
I mean one of the core character traits of Superman is that the powers aren't what make him Superman
>>
>>88126465

But his powers make his life easy (and also hard). Superman constantly have to watch himself and hold it in. He rarely have the opportunity to let out, much less go past the breaking point. Superman's mostly unaware of his own limits.
>>
>>88122017
In the story there was an entire plot point the Guardians had to spend a great deal of time manipulating Batman precisely BECAUSE he wouldn't let it go.
>>
>>88126465
This loses a lot of meaning after the thirtieth time he gives the world of cardboard speech in some manner, saying he was holding back all along and there was never a challenge.
>>
>>88126513
>>88126546
we have objective measures of this
1) Several characters with the powers of Superman who are not Superman
2) Several instances of Superman losing his powers and continuing to be a hero in some capacity
>>
>>88126587

Post-Crisis whenever he lost his powers would take the chance to chill out and enjoy being human, since he almost kinda resented the fact that he wasn't technically human.

Nu52 Superman became scared and desperate as fuck to get his powers back, and ended up fucking his body trying to jump-start his powers back.

Why doesn't Hal just get special GL rings made for the entire Justice League?

Why doesn't Batman use all the technology at his disposal to make himself a robot suit that functionally puts him on par with the JL heavy hitters, and then give copies of that suit to all the non powered JL heroes?

Why doesn't Wonder Woman get magical batarangs forged for Bruce and a magic sword for Superman?

The Guardians don't want him to.

>Why doesn't Batman use all the technology at his disposal to make himself a robot suit that functionally puts him on par with the JL heavy hitters, and then give copies of that suit to all the non powered JL heroes?
1.) He did. It's just not always the appropriate solution. 2.) They wouldn't want it. 3.) If they do Batman probably doesn't trust them.

>Why doesn't Wonder Woman get magical batarangs forged for Bruce and a magic sword for Superman?
Batman can get his own if he felt like it. He doesn't trust magic, however, and probably wouldn't use them. Superman wouldn't use the sword either.

>Why doesn't Red Tornado build a billion copies of himself to increase his efficiency?
Probably the only legitimate question... if you ignore the philosophical quandary it poses for Red Tornado and whether or not he would be up to tackle it.

Abin Sur's death was a special case.

Usually the ring only abandon a Green Lantern after the body is lifeless and cold, so the ring takes its time to search for the perfect candidate in that space sector.

Buuuut Abin Sur wanted his ring to go find a new candidate while he was still alive, because he wanted to pass a message to the new guy before dying. That's why Abin Sur's ring picked someone close and FAST.

A lot of the lanterns got their rings passed on to them by living people actually. Sinestro just happened to kill his after he got the ring and Arkkis Chummuck ate his after he got the ring. Hal had two dying people give him a ring. It's really only in the Johns era that Lanterns even died at all so much. Used to be you just retired and passed a ring to an apprentice.

I've always been curious about this; wasn't the whole Parallax thing a retcon? I thought Hal went crazy somehow and then Johns(?) wanted to save the character, so he decided that he'd been possessed the whole time. What was the story before that decision? I've never been a big GL reader, so I've only heard the rough outlines of what happened.
>>
>>88127810
Hal's hometown blows up and Hal goes fucking crazy, he attacks a bunch of other GLs for their rings, kills Kilowog and Sinestro then absorbs all the energy from the central green power battery leaving the corps defunct and himself extremely powerful. he starts calling himself Parallax when he tries to reboot reality
>>
Poor Saint I wish they have continued the comic.
>>
>>
>>88127810
the original story was he had a mental breakdown after Coast City was destroyed by Robot Superman, and wanted to bring it back

to do this killed a bunch of Green Lanterns and stole their rings, then used that power to drain the Central Power Battery, which caused him to become the massively powerful villain Parallax

the Johns retcon simply added in that an entity of pure fear that was trapped in the Central Power Battery latched onto his soul when he drained the battery
>>

>>
>>
>>

>I guess I just don't get why he would do any of that
You mean why Hal would go crazy and try to restart the universe in an attempt to fix everything?

Because DC wanted a sales boost so they picked the most expendable big hero and fucked him over

Keep in mind this came right on the tail of Death of Superman and Knightfall, it was somewhat more permanent than those two

Johns' retcon made it so that Parallax was slowly feeding fear into Hal so when he totally snapped Parallax could take over

In the canon appearances, Batman is apparently very shit at using a power ring. Green Arrow too,

In the early Johns series they said using a power ring is like passing a kidney stone. You have to have a shitload of brain power to make it work right.

Then again lately they pass those things around like candy in each event so who knows.
>>
>>88127981
I guess in that context it does make a sort of sense. I didn't read death of superman until years later, but Knightfall was practically my introduction to comics.
>>
So considering the entire universe is only split up into a few thousand sectors, how fast are GL rings capable of going with their wearers to get from point A to point B?
>>
>>88128129

Batman managed to control Hal's ring with Hal's help, but he have the ring back because Batman wasn't ready to let the past go and embrace his wishes.

Then a Sinestro ring found him, but since the ring detected that he had a GL's ring radiation in his body the Sinestro's ring left.
>>
>>88128129
Batman had to face his inner demons (which, you know, he can't) every time he wanted a construct. With Green Lantern it wiped him out mentally. I'm guessing a combination of the two would be needed (you know, actualized willpower and not a second-hand version).

Because the editor at the time, Kevin Dooley, wanted GL to go through something similar to Knightfall and Death and Return of Superman to boost sales. So he kicks out Gerard Jones before the end of his run which would've had the return of the Corps fully rather than just the 30+ they had and instead got Ron Marz to write Emerald Twilight. Originally it was going to be 6 issues but got rushed to only 3 issues in 2 months so it would hit issue 50 as the finale. So instead of seeing Hal go through stages of grief as his world breaks down, he goes completely bonkers after a Guardian tells him to nut up.

Hal goes through a lot of character development over the years after becoming Parallax and later dying/becoming the Spectre, but Geoff Johns wanted to wipe the slate clean so we get a bug made of fear somehow possessed him and stuck with him after he died and became the Spectre. So Hal officially Did Nothing Wrong™ and it makes Emerald Twilight look even stupider in retrospect.

If the ring is vulnerable to yellow, how's it going to stop yellow sun radiation?

nope

although the ring didn't specifically say it, the ability to overcome great fear was always a criteria

Unless you were of a species that needed some special accommodations just to hold and use the thing you'd be stuck with the ring because that's part of the uniform.

Could you explain this to someone that does not read GL regularly please? Like is that the girl I heard about where her age is listed as something like 10 but because of the time it takes her planet to rotate around its sun she's still the equivalent of an adult human or someone else?

Hal and Arisia had a little sister loves big brother oniichan thing going on while Hal wanted nothing to do with it because he obviously thought she was too young. After the Crisis she started subconsciously altering her body and mind to age itself up because she wanted Hal's dick that bad. Black Hand trapped the two of them in a ditch with no ring charge and Arisia started making advances on Hal with some bedroom eyes and seeing as how they thought they were gonna die, Hal went with it.
>>

It would, as part of something larger. Batman included fear gas in his plan to break Hal Jordan.

>>88121444
Why would they care? If you aren't one of Earth's 512 green lanterns, then you are a Green Lantern for an entire SECTOR of space. Most sectors have multiple worlds in habited by tool using sentient races. So there's no reason to skip over Clark Kent, Kryptonian and wardling of the Kents, just because he is different from the local humans.

Heck, the ring could just as likely select a whale, pig, dolphin, cow, raccoon, or large rat as a human. Or even the planet itself. Lantern rings aren't exactly sensible in who they pick.

Superman's responsible, well-meaning, hard working, and morally up right, but he's not brave. By the scales of 99% of beings within his home sector, he is, without exaggeration, as unto a god. That he would fight without powers does stand to reason that he should get a ring at some point, but Hal usually gets his ring well before superman's gone through any such ordeal. As such, at the time, superman has yet to exercise or experience true courage, and therefore would not ping on the ring's brave-dar.

How do you guys get this? Even at times when various incarnations of Superman has been shown as temporarily powerless he's never once hesitated to put his life on the line like he does almost every single day as Superman.

Yes. He's like a god here. But he spends his days fighting other people with similar levels of power. He's "like a god" but never even hesitates when it's time to punch a real god in the face if he has to.

Tell us where you guys are reading all these stories about how superman shirks from dangerous *to him* activities. Tell us one time when someone tells him "this will kill you" and he ever says "Oh, shit, really? Welp, I'm out."

What superman stories are you guys reading?

1. We have several weaker Kryptonians
Especially the Kandorians

2. The stories of Powerless Superman varies a lot. They range from Clark Kent turning extremely virile and manly, to Superman playing it as a joke
You don't start seeing any middleground or mortality until far into the 70s, where a depowered Clark might have to face any Mortal Fears.
>>
>>88126798
>1.) He did. It's just not always the appropriate solution.
Previously him wasting money on a huge suit of power armor wouldn't even remotely help him in the kind of ground-level crime fighting he does, which chiefly involves stealth and investigation rather then needing raw power. Of course that was before the modern era where if he spends even a minute of panel time not involved in a punchup with a garish archfoe he STILL isn't doing detective work most often.
The current irony of the World's Greatest Detective is that he's usually barely written as doing any detective work anymore because it takes up too much page space to show him doing it.
>Batman can get his own if he felt like it. He doesn't trust magic, however, and probably wouldn't use them. Superman wouldn't use the sword either.
In all fairness, Bruce's mistrust of magic is at least partially justified by previous canon, with all the events where some magic-focused character goes batshit loony for reasons that only make sense to magic people.

and it sucks because his ending sounded pretty cool and even would've had Hal retire.

Issue #48 Original Solicit
>“Superman and the Justice League gather by Green Lantern’s side as Hal confronts the horror of the destruction of Coast City. Meanwhile on Oa, the Guardians of the Universe find themselves fighting a lethal battle against… the Guardians of the Universe.”

Issue #49
>“Green Lantern is caught up in a battle raging between two equally powerful groups of Guardians of the Universe. Hal’s side loses, and the winners’ first act is to take away the power rings’ 24-hour time limit, and their yellow impurity. Their second act is to appoint a new leader of the Green Lantern Corps--Sinestro! This issue leads directly into the landmark Green Lantern #50, a major turning point for the series.”

With Issue 50 supposedly being about Hal retiring as a GL and going under a new name (The Protector was the WIP name) and have a new GL take up the helm much like Kyle did in #51. It's just one of those things you'll never really know what could've happened and what might have spawned from that if Kyle had never become to Torchbearer.

no matter how you want to define it love is an emotion you feel

feeling that emotion towards everyone does not mean you dont feel that emotion, even if it can mean the comparative "weight" felt towards any individual is less- ie being scared of two things doesnt make you less scared of either thing

plus loving everyone doesnt mean you dont hate or even fear some of the people you love as well, the other emotions you feel can be compared to that love, you dont lose the forest for the trees

In the Smallville Season 11 comics, that version of Superman was chosen to be the Lantern for the sector when New Kandor was or something like that, which is where OP's art is from.
