To anyone reading in this thread, the one recommendation i got on /b was crossed. I dabbled in it a while back, but it never really struck me as... anything more than gore porn and shock value. Does it get better? Did i not read enough of it? If anyone knows, feel free to answer

Honestly, if you like comics you should stick around. We could always use more people that actually read comic books here.

Since it seems you're really into grittier, more violent stuff, i'm going to second everyone's suggestions of Ennis' works. They have that quality to them for sure, but also a lot of genuine heart.

In addition, you need to read Kurt Busiek's run on Conan, published by Dark Horse in the early 2000's. That whole first volume is phenomenal. All guest contributors are fantastic, Cary Nord's unique, inkless line work pops beautifully with Dave Stewart's expert coloring, and Timothy Truman picks up when Busiek leaves off and does a great job of it. I truly can't recommend many books higher, and will argue to the death that it is the single best comic book published in the 2000s
