Look at this filthy traitor. The Empire gave him a secure job with regular hours, and how does he repay his debt to society?

By sabotaging the very vehicles our brave soldiers use to keep us safe from criminals, slavers, aliens and Rebel scum!

Someone ought to burn his balls off for such treason.

Then meet the True Enemy of Lothal.

The Empire's goal on Lothal isn't Kyber Crystals. That's a smokescreen. Krennic only thinks Galen Erso can help him, however the true intent of the Empire is to capture Loth-Cats and rub their fur with glass rods to acquire raw power charged with pure Loth-Cat FUCK YOU energy to generate the Death Star's super laser.

Are the Rebels comics in the Rebels Magazine canon?

How are they quality wise?
>>
Reading Bloodlines makes me realize again what bothered me most about TFA: barely anything has changed after 30 years. The New Republic is incompetent and gets absolutely nothing done ever, just like the old Republic that allowed the Empire to come power. 30 years and barely anything has improved politically, especially with the whole Centralists vs Populists. Then the heroes you care about have barely changed either. Han and Leia are essentially seperated because of their work, Chewie fucked off home for years apparently, everyone just seems miserable in general. Luke is the only one doing anything, trying to rebuild the Jedi order, but we know he just gives up and fucks off once Ben kills everyone.

For as shitty as the old EU could be, at least interesting shit started happening after the Empire fell, instead of everything remaining rather stagnant just because they need to set some status quo for the sequel trilogy. At least in the EU Luke was making progress with new Jedi and some sense of balance was coming back.
>>
>>88105268
Yup. The new post-RotJ stuff basically reset their accomplishments.

So whose idea was that, anyway? How much of it was JJ?
>>
>>88105217
Yes to the first.

Can't answer the second, though.
>>
>>88105306
It's such a terrible idea. I understand ignoring the EU so you can freely develop a new story for a major movie, but the fact thay hardly anything got done in 30 years makes the First Order seem like not such bad guys. At least they want shit to get done. Does the New Republic even have a fleet? They're going to get hosed in Episode 8.

I guess on the bright side it makes me feel better about the lack of comics/novels that take place in that 30 year gap, since any dealing with Luke and his Jedi or Leia and the Republic would just be pointless. Disney doesn't seem too keen on exploring new characters, like the old EU used to do.

Maybe with any luck that sense of fresh ideas/adventures and progress will come back to the books once the sequels are all out and we can hopefully finally explore the future of the Jedi order and whatnot.

That's... a lot of Star Wars, frankly.

I mean, with like 6000 years of pre-movie history, the comics, games, and novels managed to do "And then all the Jedi were massacred" like, what, 6-7 times? And that's without going into the two or three times it was supposed to have happened again AFTER the movies over the next century.

Thrawn is studying the Rebels tactics and what lengths they're willing to go to & is trying to coax the larger Rebellion out so that he can wipe them out.

Whatever meme bullshit the writer pulled out of his ass to justify his little fantasy does not change that this bravado-infested disgrace dueling Luke Skywalker and sassing Vader is refuse for lowest common denominator entertainment - and among Star Wars fans, that's really saying something. It is entirely out of character for a Stormtrooper to snark at a superior like that, no matter his special snowflake backstory.

ah alright thanks

any word on whether or not the omnibus collections are directly swappable with the ALTAs in terms of chronology? They have similar names, but there are only 5 volumes as opposed to 6. Should I extract the stories and make separate cbrs with custom page orders or go fit the omnibus volumes as they are directly on the timeline. Since the omnibus compilations are newer I'm not sure if their reading order is more definitive, but the EU timeline chronology on wookieepedia doesn't list them.

other people here have no doubt tried copying the EU list/structure at some point as well, your input is welcome

Yeah they collect more issues per volume, just that I wasn't sure about the chronological aspect. As in:

Omni volume 1 would collect 1-27, whereas the older Alta version would only collect 1-20

the wiki comics timeline shows issues 21-27 as part of the older alta volume 2 and thus it places some other comics between 1-20 and 21-27. A similar case happens with every volume as the omnis contain more issues. So the problem is I'm not sure if there's any point cutting and editing the omnis to imitate the older alta volumes so they'd fit the reading order as show on the wiki.

Any tips?

Honestly? I have no idea since I never read Marvel's Star Wars. However, if some comics do take place between volumes, you're probably better off editing those omnis so you can fit the corresponding issues in between. The only problem would be the credit pages, but I'm pretty sure the old school SW comics had a credit page inside the story, so I wouldn't be much a problem at all, really.

I just want to tell you: good luck. We're all counting on you.

I remember posting somewhere (forgot where) about the nature of race/sex of Star Wars. I've lost it and since I don't want to write it all out it boils down to this:
I don't know why all of a sudden people are saying Star Wars has an issue with race and sex. A brief survey of the old canon (including the films) leads you to find plenty of female, colored, and alien characters, most of the protagonists (and even side characters) actually being quite capable and badass.
No one really noticed though because it felt natural and no attention was drawn to it. In fact I never even thought about it until this stuff started coming out about how Star Wars is racist/sexist/etc.
I feel like all of these new characters and the casting now seems forced rather than natural. To be honest that's how I feel about Star Wars in general now :/

Really though I don't think it "should" have necessarily used existing species. Isn't there already a Quarren in the jail with Jyn in one of the trailers? One or two cameos from already established species is fine, but basically every movie has introduced a ton of new species. Only the prequels really had species from previous movies in them, and those were mostly background Twi'leks to fill giant crowds in Coruscant or whatever.

I never got the hate that movie got. I mean, this is the same series of movies with the Ark of the Covenant, a bunch of magic stones, and the Holy Grail, but aliens and surviving a nuclear explosion by hiding in a fridge is too much? Or how about when Indy travels on top of a submarine by holding onto its fucking hull in Raiders? Why did no one complain about that back in the day? Fucking hypocrites. I find the acting in the PT to be less disengenoius than, say, Marvel movies or Judd Apatow comedies.

No matter how stilted the acting is, the actors always feel like they are part of the universe.

You might say that Disney Star Wars was already foretold by Star Tours 2.0.

The original Star Tours was all about expanding the world what with all the new droids, the original Captain Rex, the new environments of comets and the Star Tours spacestation, and only really reused 3PO and R2 in minor roles and a Death Star.

Star Tours 2.0 is almost nothing but memberberries. Admittedly, George enabled them by doing stuff like rejecting the original "Tauntaun and Wampa" focus for the Hoth sequence in favor of time-mismatched ESB retreading, but nonetheless, it's an obnoxiously in-jokey (like the baggage claim droid in the queue keeps finding and quipping on Disney stuff in the bags) and self-aware affair that takes you out of the Star Wars setting too much.

The point of the Jedi is that they're legendary warriors and Luke only showed us half or less of their talents. In AOTC, they come off as incompetent soldiers that can get killed by robots. TFA somewhat brought back that grand feeling we got whenever a lightsaber was ignited so it felt exciting again as opposed to the infamous coliseum scene in AOTC.

No, they come off as skilled people who were outnumbered and/or outgunned. We see them slashing down plenty of droids but more keep coming and they just get overwhelmed.

Tumblr is mad at Kathleen Kennedy

>george lucas directed star wars (1977) after only making one studio film but ok kathy

>And JJ had directed two - two - movies when he got hired for TFA? Plus he’s producer on the whole ST, despite not exactly having a ton of experiences with major movies.

>Pull the other one Kathleen, it’s got bells on it. Because you have one hell of a set of double standards here.

>also isn’t gareth edwards’ only other big project Godzilla? so like… this is bullshit?

>and treverrow’s only claim to fame was jurassic world so it’s all 100% bullshit

>kathy what the fuck are you on about?

>>
>>88118353
This one feels a bit disingenuous. Lucas directed Star Wars when nobody knew it was going to be big, plus it was his baby, so I don't know why bringing that up mattered. And JJ has "name recognition" more than anything else which helped drive the hype machine (and, let's be honest, the complaint department too. I know I wasn't happy with him after seeing what he did to Star Trek).

Are the people complaining offering any candidates instead of just bemoaning the choices?

I just finished the Ahsoka book.

It was alright. I was a little disappointed that it didn't focus on the siege of Mandalore, but the story wasn't that bad.

Like Lost Stars, I'm surprised that this is a YA novel, considering some of its more graphic depictions of torture and death.
>>
>>88118921
If Filoni had a huge help for the PT, they would've been largely better films. I grew up with the OOT, PT never existed when I was a kid (born in 1979), and I read Starlog magazine.
>>
>>88118940
Oo, we can get Natalie Portman! She'd LOVE it.

Can you not read? Are you even following the conversation? He got information wrong about the BTS and instead of trying to refute he called everyone who disagreed with him a Lucas defender.

>>
>>88119005
Possibly. Worth noting that Filoni (like myself) proudly likes the PT. He said himself that some of the best, and most important and emotional moments in the entire saga come from the prequels.

But, to play devils advocate, Filoni was pretty open about challenging Lucas on some of his ideas, as early as Season 1. It is possible that perhaps Filoni could have helped Lucas polish some stuff in ways that McCallum & co didnt.
>>
>>88119021
No Kathryn Bigelow? The Anniversary Blu-ray disc of STRANGE DAYS is great. (DE).
>>88119105
Agreed on the latter in Filoni could've helped make the PT as polished as the OOT, as per THE CLONE WARS. I found the PT to be okay and great about introducing new locales and such.
>>
>>88119050

So I just finished my rewatch of The Phantom Menace and the only two characters that could return in Rogue One and break the internet that I can think of now is Qui-Gon and Maul.
I have no idea who are big enough characters that only appeared in TPM that could "break the internet". But maybe MakingStarWars just exaggerated.

>He got information wrong about the BTS
He didn't. Save for a few occasions, Lucas mostly sat down enjoying his coffee. Like Pablo.
>>
>>88119154
There could be factors here, but I don't know. Female directors are not as plentiful, sadly, and I don't know how many have a schedule opening to accommodate Lucasfilm. Might be spoken for with other projects (not an insurmountable barrier since studios often haggle with each other to release directors). Then there's the scifi/fantasy element, not to mention Star Wars is never going to be seen as high art. At the same time it's a cultural phenomenon so you'll be under a lot of scrutiny and pressure.

I'm not sure what, if any or all, of these are in play. This might be why they can find people but they aren't quite what they want. With so few female directors I think they'd probably be more protective about themselves, what they do, what risks they take. Making a Star Wars anthology might not seem worth it. Scifi/fantasy struggle to get respect. There's also the whole, "A girl is fucking with our franchise!" There'd be a lot of shit to deal with. And they haven't even gotten any of their anthology movies out of the stable yet. We won't know if this experiment will pay off until Rogue One arrives. Soon, at least. Soon.

I don't think everyone despises her. I mean sure we have that guy who loves to post pictures of her teeth. There is nothing wrong or unusual about being powerful in Star Wars when you have the Force. It's literally destiny having your back. Something I have seen about her is that she is considered the least well performed of the newly added main characters, which is a relative critic based on the other people in the film. And I think it's true.

Maybe it's something else JJ is copying from the OT. Luke may have been the designated hero but young Mark Hamill, and I'm sorry Mark, but Harrison Ford is goddamn Harrison Ford. Luke was fricking magic and yet kids wanted to be Han Nerfherdin' Solo.

Oddly enough, it's not the character I hate. She's got issues, but who doesn't? I mean, even not having any issues is an issue, but I digress. It helps when the criticisms are accurate. People still claim she's never flown before but does it perfectly, but even in the movie she says she's flown before, just never left the planet. It's not like she doesn't scrap and smash into things or get shot up, it's like people are mad she didn't actually crash and kill them all.

They'd still be mad if she did crash; the reasons/people would just be different. Like they go in wanting to hate.v That said, I agree that it helps having accurate criticisms on hand. According to the Battlefront dev stream earlier, they were flip-flopping a lot regarding things like the U-Wing's wing positions, probably trying to make their shots look more appealing. I really hope this film turns out ok. I'm not one of those people that are hyped for it, but I don't want a studio/focus test ""managed"" mess like Suicide Squad or Fantastic Four. I don't want Disney to have completely ruined this but by the sounds of it, they might have. Cancelling cross-promotion material makes it sound like they're trying to downplay it more.

I blame JJ for the misconceptions there because the scene where Rey and Finn are talking after the flight is very easy to miss because they're talking so fast in their excitement.

There's a bit of irony here in that Finn is just as open to criticism given he shot down super uber trained military pilots despite no his only gunners experience being a literal crash course with Poe. She's had previous flight experience but surely no fight experience in ships, meanwhile he's a trained stormtrooper but he has no flight and very little turret, plus we later found out Jakku was his first mission and his previous experience is as a janitor.

Luke managed to shoot down TIEs his first time in a turret (I guess the pilots were under orders to make the escape look good by dying) and he flew an X-Wing despite his only experience being an air speeder with no combat experience against anything but whomp rats. But he had The Forceâ„¢. Then it turns out so does Rey, her maneuver at the end of the chase being some of the earliest evidence of her abilities, but she gets no leeway from that.

With Rey I think she'd have benefited from giving at least one of her saves to someone else. For instance it should have been BB-8 who interfaced with the computer and saved Finn by closing that door. Sure it was Rey's fault he was in that mess but Finn was already bonding with BB-8 in terms getting the droid to reveal the location of the Resistance Base and the little droid really needed something to help pull his weight. Give him a little Artoo moment like shutting down the trash compactor. Otherwise he's just a useless little shit only there because he has a stupid crystal ANY of the oher characters could have carried.

That last bit makes sense. Maul's saber is JUST a saber with a saber on the other end. Maul puts it to much better use, however, especially since Kylo Ren actually uses his sword to fuck up the scenery more than he uses it in actual combat.

The funny thing is (and this is just the way I happen to see it) Kylo Ren's saber with its distinctive ignition sound and constantly spitting red sparks, it LOOKS far more intimidating and menacing than he ultimately manages.
>>
>>88120999
Not to trigger anyone but isn't that how it is here? For TFA in particular, if it's in that movie it's wrong. Kylo Ren? Bad villain. Finn? Bad character. Some new droid? Badly designed. The final lightsaber duel? Badly choreographed, for some reason.

Hamill's words. He just isn't into actually communicating with the actors. Hell, the best he did during ANH was that he waved up signs telling the actors to be more "intense". Although I forgot where I got this info.

Curiously Finn and Rey are both on the same basic journey of self-discovery, finding out what they want to be, who they want to be. Finn wants to escape his past but isn't sure what he can be while at the same time too scared to do anything about his old horrible bosses. Rey wants change in her life but is stubbornly clinging to her past in the hopes of the change she really wants: a family.

In all Finn decides to go up against the First Order and ends up in a coma for his trouble. Rey, meanwhile, gets all the lucky breaks from destiny in terms of the Force watching over her ass. Finn really gets the short end of the deal, for now, but I find him the more interesting character. Of course he may or may not end up being Destiny's child too. We'll have to see.

I'm ultimately not sure how I feel about Rey. She ended up doing awesome things because she's their new super duper Force main character. It was a given that she'd get her "destroy the death star moment" (ironic in that her victory is seem as greater than Luke's because she defeated a trained (but wounded) Force user, however since she didn't even fully defeat him Luke's win is actually far more significant to the galaxy).

I wonder if maybe part of the reason she did so much is they REALLY wanted to sell a female hero. Ahsoka had some moments that pissed people off when they thought she was too competent leading to her being declared a Mary Sue too.

I can only hope that Rey falls to the dark side in the next film, if she stays the "perfect force user of good" route the whole time it'll be irritating

>Casting a Mary sue and an ugly black as the main characters.
>No diversity agenda behind all of it.

It's not like they casted a white male as the MC for Rogue one to make up for that.

There's an agenda.

More like people are shit.
The day people realize that the prequels are great films is the day John Lennon's "Imagine" becomes a reality.

Well that was an unfortunate mistake on George's part.

He did say Watto was supposed to be closer to an Italian used car salesman, but really, that doesn't help much.
