So just watched the Blood Moon Ball

So yeah, exactly what I was looking for in this show.

So far I think it's fantastic. Even the episodes where nothing relevent happens its hilarious. Like, its been a long time since a cartoon actually made me laugh, and this show has done it.

I took kinda extensive notes during the first episode...which I mean was actually two but kisscartoon labels them as 1A and 1B and what have you.

This was my impression during the first season, that she was making them up on the spot, though some of the spells do recur. Not really a spoiler, but the most recent episode implied all the spells she uses do exist and have a purpose; she just might be reciting some at random and thus using them wrong because she doesn't pay much attention to her spellbook.

Could be a bit of a retcon, but since spells have been used more than once even in the first season it makes the show a bit more coherent on the whole.

Would like to see your thoughts on the season 1 finale.

I didn't mean it as a positive or negative for either show; just an observation. The sorta exaggeratedly toothy smiles and eyelashes on the female characters, generally round shapes, etc. Gravity Falls has some of the same features.

What I was more getting at is that when /co/ today talks about CalArts they do often try to describe the style as resembling Simpsons in simplicity re: how humanoid characters are drawn. Some of the original directors etc. were also CalArts alumni.

I think the styles of both shows are fine though.

it's a lot easier on the eye when theyre in motion, and they can use deformation to make movement more pleasing

I get the desire to have a lot of current cartoons with different styles, but I think the style for Star looks perfect for the type of show it is.

I can't really think of anything that'd be gained with from the pseudo-realistic '80s style or the '90s Disney cartoon style. Wouldn't fit the humor and general action/pace of the show.

Unfortunately if all people see of it is a promotional image or one dumb screencap out of context, they judge it without seeing how it looks in motion or how it's storyboarded etc. I kind of still irrationally hate that one shot of Star in her princess dress freaking out over the wand in the first episode because of how it was spammed here before the premiere in "lookit this adventure time shit, animation sucks now" kinda threads.
