I like it because I think it does a better job of portraying teenagers and their relationships with one another unvarnished than most shows. They are kinda shitty to each other quite often and sometimes for petty or no reason, but that's actually pretty accurate.

I also really like the show's aesthetics, to my eyes it has a really pleasing colour pallet, the backgrounds are pretty and I'm seemingly one of the few people who takes no issue with the character design. They're distinctive and memorable, and as a designer that's what you aim for - There's no mistaking a Code Lyoko character, you know instantly where they're from.

I haven't watched the later seasons for a while, but iirc it got a less repetitive from the second season onwards when they were able to have plots that carried over. That's a dumb thing that's quite common in Euro cartoons - TV channels usually want the first season to be stand alone episodes that can be aired in any order so that if it fails it doesn't matter.

It had some bad moments, but was otherwise pretty entertaining. With that said, if the show could get a redistribution, I'd love to see them redub it.

Granted, I think the girls who did Aelita and Sissi should return, as they worked very well for those characters. Odd's voice actor was pretty charming at times, and probably coul turn in a better performance with the right dub director.

Although yes, they actually did try to "americanize" things like I think the Eiffel Tower and other locations were avoided being brought up when iirc there were blantent Eupoean locaions present in the show, it was clearly not likely anyone actually fell for it, nothing from the show screamed "America". Hell even Totally Spies could pass being "American", but even that's a stretch with some of the locations in that show as well.

But don't think that stopped America from trying to act "smart" with localization. Ace Attorney comes to mind with that.

Great sense of mystery. Excellent world building. Good tension. Great character development.

All of the characters are three dimensional, highly realistic for their ages. They have flaws and varied personality quirks, their relationships are complex, nuanced, and realistic. The school feels very real, the interactions of the students feels natural, the teachers are all reasonable, rational adults. There's always a sense that the school and city around it are a real, functioning place, not just a background.

There's always a sense of actual tension and suspense, XANA is a very genuine threat that puts a lot of lives in great danger on a regular basis, and actually feels unstoppable, the victories against XANA feel earned, and like it's always an uphill struggle.

The plot actually moves forward, it doesn't obnoxiously stick to the status quo (at least after season 1), there are developments that really change the dynamic of things.

The action starts out bad but gets much better as the show goes on.

She seemed hard to be around a lot of the time. Despite being the principle's daughter, Sissi did seem to not be the queen-Bee she perceived herself as. She barely hung out with any of the other girls, and kept two of the most beta-looking guys around instead of the immediate hunks who probably numbered in the dozens and would have given their dicks just to be at her beck and call.

Do French cartoons have the "mean girl at school" character stereotype like American cartoons do? Sissi's pretty much a parody of it since she acts like it but is actually a widely-hated laughingstock. I remember there was a scene in a science class and she asked a good question about something and everyone laughed at her.

And there's the multiple times she helped out with XANA bullshit only to lose her memory in the reset.

And the prequel episode where it was revealed she was the first person to make friends with Ulrich and discovered the supercomputer along with her but he got emo and rejected her because she went for help from adults when his life was in danger and he didn't fill her in after the time reset.

From Sissi's perspective Ulrich is mean to her for no reason.

She does still have an attitude problem though, desperation and egotism aren't particularly attractive unless you're into that sort of thing. Sissi seems happiest when she's free to do what she wants to do rather than within the restrictive confines of the education system, like where she was drawing when she should have been doing an exam (which is an interesting juxtaposition to her dad, who obviously has to follow the rules and make sure she does too).

It's similar with Herve to a certain extent, he was shown to be pretty clever and competent in a couple of episodes (once he had to fill in for Jeremie I recall) just that his shitty attitude is the main barrier to him having decent friends.

There are certainly kids like that though, so I guess it's realistic. It's kind of a shame that when either of them actually gained more of an understanding of the main characters the timeline got reset and they went back to having learned nothing.

Far as the gang was concerned, she had betrayed them (even though her intentions were honest and compassionate). It didn't help matters that she tried to throw the betrayal back at Ulrich simply because of Yumi, and then act like she was busting a fanclub instead of helping her friends.

And while it's true that they undid this moment and turned against her, that's more of a fault in the writing with the staff not better clarifying that the gang was worried Sissi's affections for Ulrich and how they could cloud her judgment.

Ironic, considering how many times all of them have had irrational moments due to their emotions.
