"Tomorrow Ain't What It Used to Be"

2016 hasn't been particularly kind to Kamala Khan.

The All-New, All-Different Avengers?

Imploded by infighting and desertion prompted by conflicting ideologies and the personal psychoses of its members.

Her best friend?

Maimed, in Wakanda, and currently hating her guts.

Her attempts to end Civil War II?

Resulted in her having to team up with a Canadian Ninja terrorist cell.

Her hero, Carol Danvers?

Disavowed and tried to arrest her, and is set to walk away from all her jackboot shenanigans (this is what? The 3rd or 4th time she's gone Space Hitler?) without a scratch and Galactus Herald powers as a bonus.

The Champions?

Had a kidnapped, half-naked teenage girl die on their first mission and now they're stuck babysitting Professor X's future murderer while their Hulk makes out with a sheltered robot. Not to mention how rage and pride are guiding her hand as team leader.

2017 could be better.

Maybe.

But she'll have to get through this chapter in her life first.

Presenting the long-awaited and often-mocked Election Special.

I'm really not a fan of the cliche that a jerk is only a jerk because they're repressing their homosexuality.

Leaves them kind of lacking as characters when they finally come out of the closet.

Recap pages can be pretty fun. Like Irredeemable Ant-Man's!
>>
>>88053686
Instead we end up with Lobdell-style recap narration. The real answer is that they either have to sacrifice a page of story or a page of ads, which costs them money.

>people read recap pages

It's half a summary of a character you would already know and half the stuff that happened in the previous comics.

And no, casuals don't read recap pages either.

Now, a PREVIOUSLY ON [COMIC TITLE] page of panels from the previous issues would be nice. I also like the monologues from the heroes at the start, used effectively in Johns' GL.

Maybe in 2020, Marvel characters will try to appeal to the rural state voters instead of the Forever Blue Cities that only have so many electoral college points available to them.

Yes, the hillbilly/redneck is the last safe target in pop media mockery (who cares how they feel? They're dumb, poor, backwards, and probably racist!).

Hi there, Mark Waid. This isn't Omales, man. What I'm saying is they ought to be included. They're a part of the country. They shouldn't be ignored or belittled. But they were and now here we are.

Also, I hope that when the next DC reboot happens, you aren't writing for the brand. Or any brand. The latter scenario would be ideal. I don't want the Kents going down the path of Charles Xavier just to serve some anti-authoritarian "progressive" agenda.

I don't think so, they need it to reflect real life so that readers can relate to it. That's the point of the issue, it's specifically about this year's election.

Using these stand-ins simplifies matters because they can paint in broad strokes. Real life candidates are multi-faceted and have complex values and stances, stand-ins don't have to represent that.

Also they don't have to imply one of the real life candidates is literally a member of a Nazi terrorist organization.

These plus the guy saying they all suck might as well come from a non-fiction book. I mean, if people actually don't give a shit who represents them, then I guess don't vote, but I guarantee a lot of people upset with the outcome this time around didn't vote. And that's dumb.

Also, this comic is politically benign. Gerrymandering is a real phenomenon and should not be a partisan issue and the villains (if you read the earlier issues) are basically Brooklyn liberal white hipsters. The ending is a fantasy (3rd party candidates can't win elections in this country; elections aren't sports where a massive underdog can win a miraculous victory), but /pol/ users getting upset about this shows just how easily triggered they are.

Actually this kind of is the way that third party candidates can win, in local elections, not national level ones. If I was somebody that had some position in the Greens or Libertarians that's what I'd focus on. Remember that Bernie Sanders wasn't a Democrat until very recently, he spent the vast majority of his career as an Independet candidate. By being basically unknown until a national level election third parties set themselves up for failure because even if both major candidates suck, like in this election, they'll accomplish nothing because everyone "knows" that they can't win. It's on local levels where they both have an actual chance and could start building up recognition and loyalty.
>>88056113
It's what a lot of people believe I guess, but it's completely ridiculous. Trump was born into wealth and spent his entire life in it. Also, he owns factories in foreign countries and imports foreign labor. He's bragged about buying politicians with his money in the past. He is the exact opposite of all the populist stuff that he and his supporters have claimed him to be. I don't think he's going to be the next Hitler, but I do think that anyone buying his populist angle and thinking he actually cares about working class people is absolutely absurd.
>>
>>88057877
Argument about what?
I'm responding to "YEAH RIGHT, that's just a liberal thing" with "conservatives did it just last election."

From the "Have I told you that I voted for the LEGITIMATE THIRD PARTY ALTERNATIVE today? Trump never got my vote!" Johnson supporters to the "Look! Ron Paul was right! YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS IF YOU CHOSE PAUL!" Paul people.

Every 4 years they come out and remind everyone why the party is a complete joke.

>>
>>88057972
>>88058123
Of course, in most places third party candidates don't go for local elections because they aren't really interested in good governance, just like every other asshole. They go after national election and then are basically unknown in most places throughout the years in between because they desperately hope for that sweet, sweet 5% of the vote that will win them federal funding. And they go for it no matter how many times they miss it as they are.
A person who genuinely gives a shit can do some real good in a local level position, regardless of what Party they belong to.

I don't remember who said it, but there was some quote about "All the high-minded ideals about democracy and national level change in peoples' heads aren't worth a single pothole being filled."

Funny how Kamala is Muslim but we never see her at prayers. Don't they have to pray five times or something? And we see her celebrating Christmas but not Ramadan. She generally tries to follow the parts of her religion she agrees with, while questioning the parts that she does not agree with. It is the same as for Christians. Going to churches to pray constantly and donating money to it is impractical, so many do not do it in favor of their own personal beliefs of what is correct action based on experiences.
>>
>>88059939
Yes. She's meant to be the "average New York girl" which means the target demographic, which in turn means "average white urban millennial". In Italy, too, to vote is "a right AND a duty".
You get automatically to vote once you hit 18(25 for the Senate) for everything.

Some votes, like some referendums, can actually be boycotted by not voting because they requires a minimum of people going to vote as not voting in interpreted as "nobody actually cares about this".

Until a few decades ago, not voting would end up on your Police Certificate. Not punished, but basically let you open to public shaming(which is why it was removed)
Generally speaking, I still don't understand why the hell you need to actually REGISTER to vote in the USA.

Like only one voting place for a large area with a lot of people so there's lines, voting hours that make it hard for people with jobs to get to vote, needing multiple ids or very specific types of id. you throw up all these extra hoops to jump through and people get discouraged and end up saying it's not worth it. this is also why they push a narrative of "your vote doesn't matter anyway"
>>
>>88064010
>needing multiple ids or very specific types of id.
what?
Also, I don't get the USAmerican hate for ID cards.
>>
>>88063814
>>88063763
>>88063891

A multitude of ways like in some states the place to get your now compulsory voter ID you are required to have only being on the 5th wednesday of each month which can easily mean about 3 days a year in which everyone has to try and get a voter ID at once or else the office that does that is closed.

Then you wait 12+ hours in line if you arrive at the pollig station early.

You could get a driver's license but that's usually the sort of thing you only grab if you have a car nor do you want to pay a bunch of money to be able to VOTE when you're poor.
And then the people that forced mandatory voter ID on everyone to "prevent voter fraud" get caught on camera committing voter fraud as a systemic action they take in the running of the US government.
>>
>>88064146

like needing multiple photo ids to vote. who has something besides their drivers license.

the hate is because the bureaucracy you go through of getting one.
>>

>>88064302
At least it theoretically allows people to have influence. Prone to corruption, but has something resembling safe-checks.
>>
>>88064172
>>88064191
that's bullshit on a bureaucratic level even higher than Italy.

Actually, it's really simple to vote in Italy, it helps getting a ID Card is really simple, most have it before hitting 18, it's cheap and it's generally thought a good idea to have an ID with oneself so everybody has one.

Voting happens (generally) Saturday 6am-10pm, Sunday 6am-10pm and often monday 6am-12pm[BTW next referendum is going to be only on Sunday, 7am-11pm], so it's almost impossible to NOT have time to vote and there are mechanics for those who are forced away from their voting place: for example there are voting rooms in most hospitals and the patients can vote there-
...bloody hell, for an Italian is SAD to see a nation so much WORSE than us at anything(except food), especially anything involving politics and bureaucracy
>>
>>88063814

I don't understand what you're asking. Are you asking how they prevent voting?

In the US you have to register to vote ahead of time, and voting is on Tuesdays (which is a weekday). You're not supposed to be fired if you take off work to vote, but you definitely will be because America has practically no labor laws, and most people survive paycheck-to-paycheck in the US so losing a day of hours can mean not being able to pay your bills.

Voting booths are placed in politically selected districts, so districts that favor certain parties can get many voting booths while some districts get one or none. That means waiting upwards of four hours to vote, not including travel time.

Then you have Voter ID laws, which seem like a good idea but in practice serve as a poll tax; some forms of ID required cost money, which makes it an expense the poor can't afford, and the amount of ID required at the poll is arbitrary.
>>
>>88064688
OK, why the hell you keep calling yourselves a democracy? You obviously aren't.
>>
>>88064769
Because having a name that sounds good improves the outlook of others on you. The Tyranny of Forced Labor as a nation would turn off people.
>>
>>88064769
We're a democratic republic. We democratically elect representatives, rather than directly voting on issues. The problem is that our system is set up and manipulated to benefit the existing parties. The US is at best an oligarcy.

It also doesn't help that our parties call themselves "Democrats" and "Republicans" to obfusticate ideological issues ("We aren't a Democracy! We're a Republic! Only GOP voters are sane rrreeeeee!!!")
>>
>>88064955

Have you heard of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea?
>>
>>88065000
Congo Free State to Republic of Congo to Republic of Zaire to Democratic Republic of Congo, name of that land never reflected accurately the political climate.
>>
>>88064688
>>88064769

Just to add on to this. The voter labour laws are completely dependent on the state. My state Maryland for example has zero requirements that the employer give employees time to go vote.

Others have mentioned the ID thing which fucks over the homeless, elderly, and generally anyone who doesn't have the paperwork to start getting an ID. (Don't have birth certificate? Thats ok just get a social security card. Just need birth certificate for that and attend the office on this work hour day).

Now you can mitigate some of this like long lines by doing absentee voting. Except those votes (and over sea votes) aren't counted unless the election is considered really close and a winner cannot be decided.
>>
>>88065190
Basically the US is "Making voting laws: what NOT do"

Same in Germany.
Everybody has ID, you are automatically getting registered at your current residence and notified where you should vote. You then hand in your notification and ID to get your papers which you proceed to mark and dump into the urns.
ID is mandatory from your 16th birthday, and updated when you move. That's like a half-hour trip to the town office max.
I actually carry two official photo IDs at all times.
>>
>>88065457
Basically same here.
TECHNICALLY having a ID isn't MANDATORY... but it's required for so much shit it's just easier to keep one.
>>
>>88055635
They're all running to the polling stations and preemptively charged tasers to attack her. It's clearly self defense AND interfering with the democratic right to vote of all of the "protesters".
Additionally it's illegal to still be doing your advertisements within X feet/miles of the polling stations so that's yet another law broken.

In Bermuda it's about the same. You go to the nearest post office or whatever other government institution is nearby (all of this is a kilometer apart from the next one at best) to check and make your your name and address is in the right place as well as to be sure you are in the district you think you are ahead of time with the government paying for all sorts of ads telling you that it's time to checkup on things.
Then you show up with any sort of ID on polling day as the as the nominees thank you for showing up, your name gets crossed off the list once they find you on it and you vote in less than 5-10 minutes. Sometimes there's even cake.
It's been a long time since I had to update due to having a driver's license but I think there's also free voter ID available which is extremely quick if you don't wait till the month before elections.

In Germany it's actually illegal to not have ID.
Because with ID police can conveniently fine you for any other infrictions and make sure they got the right guy on the court orders.
Basically the entire country is structured around efficient bureaucratic processes so public servants have more time to think about the important shit.
Like optimised flower layouts and fighting residents over who decides how broad you can make your driveway.
>>
>>88066630
And ignoring immigrants who want to sexually abuse your children.
>>

>Because with ID police can conveniently fine you for any other infrictions and make sure they got the right guy on the court orders.
same in Italy, it's not illegal not have a ID but if you don't and Police stops you for whatever, they have to bring you to the station for identification, which is a waste of time for all involved, especially for minor infractions and such things.

So everybody has one with themselves.
>>
>>88066526
Well, the step with making sure you are registered correctly runs independently from voting for me, so no hassle there.
But I am a bit envious. I never saw anyone turn up at the voting locations, though. Might be that even my tiny town has several and they just hang out somewhere else?
And we never got cake. In fact I had to deliver some there because my father was helping with the vote and they got quite famished there.

You're already preregistered after the first time. It's just that they ask you to make sure no random shenanigans have happened ahead of time like you moving to a new place or whatever else the government doesn't know about since they don't stalk you to be sure of where you are at all times.
It's probably a bit awkward for the people that didn't update to realize they're several miles away from where they are supposed to be voting.
>>
>>88064472
Super easy in Aus too

You are given a chance to enrol when you're in high school, or you can do it online or at the post office.

Voting happens 6am-6pm or so on a Saturday. Businesses have to give you time to vote. There are lots of polling places open (basically every school will have one)

We also have a fucking sausage sizzle at every polling place because fuck yes sausage sizzles.

Germans vote on Sundays.
Because in our most glorious theocracy, that is the day of the Lord, when all the stores and everything is shut down, so everybody can go and vote.

Nope. Voter fraud in the US is really just a coded word for minorities trying to vote.
The NAACP had several lawsuits pending before election day (not checked up on it since) since Trump supporters would go out in crowds to black/latino communities to "ensure no voter fraud takes place" which effectively/really just means try to intimidate certain people away from voting. Keep in mind that voter fraud in the US for elections does not even reach double digits out of millions.
In one case an investigation found that out of 1.3 million votes there were exactly FIVE votes that could possibly be fraud. Those five were from under 200 errors on the part of the government or in one case a person actually dying after mailing his vote in.
Voter fraud (barring government officials committing it) is not remotely an actual problem in the US. It consists of waiting in a line for 8+ hours to cast a second vote that probably will not matter at the risk of a 10,000 fine when you are caught and jail time.
It is a far more effective use of time/resources to take that time you would be standing in line to commit fraud, earn money, and pool said money with like minded individuals to bribe the fuck out of the politicians because they are surprisingly cheap and easy.

When you see anything related to politics in America you have to remember that it's generally a bunch of code words so that anyone who doesn't understand em will think it's benign/weird and anyone that does and is against it will look like an ass to the people that don't realize it means fuck the minorities over.

I love seeing these kind of mental gymnastics. Going from "there was no voter fraud" straight to "there was voter fraud, by RUSSIANS.... a-and Trump bullies!" Watching Jill Stein's WI course case was like a trainwreck of "muh feels."

>y-yeah but Trump is calling fraud too!

It probably did. Media has been painting Trump as superhitler who will gas all mexicans, king obeezy encouraged illegals to vote, illegals can get a driver's license in CA which is good enough to vote with, and weeeeeeeew lad who woulda guessed that CA makes up for Hillary's popular vote lead alone.

Closing voting machines early in Colorado even when they "broke down ;^)" was also pretty scummy, but oh well.

And it doesn't count because it was legal, but Mass. residents could vote in NH. Pretty sketchy shit considering Hillary only won that place by 3k. But their new gov. is making that illegal so that should help quite a bit in 2020. The dems remaining retarded as seen with re-electing Pelosi also probably helps. We'll see.

>>88067600
That's exactly the plan which i just explained to you. They do that to try and get rid of anyone who will against em because fuck democracy actually working.

Felony convictions is another method.
The police target the minority communities since they're ordered to be tough on crime/drugs but the more affluent (white) communities (that have generally the same amount of crime) are the ones that donate alot of money to the departments or the politicians. The end result is that if the police were to EVER try and do what they do in the black communities the white outrage would utterly destroy them or send waves of backlash Cases would thrown out of court since alot of this stuff is unconstitutional or should be on very clearly illegal ground.
That's the first layer of defense.
Then you get to the prosecution part (if the police haven't already let you off with a warning for the same reasons you'll see in a second) and the prosecutor will more than 9/10 let the white people go to not "ruin their life" or (and I'm quoting a prosecutor on this part) "because he's not a gun toting drug dealer" after a white drug dealer got caught with an assload of drugs and had alot of guns or they simply keep it to state court. If you're black then your ass is going to federal "mandated to be a minimum of pounded in the ass for 25-life" prison.
This is pretty damn scary when your government defense lawyer's office has actual rat infestations and about 5-10 minutes of actual time to look at your case. A plea bargain seems like a smaller risk than gambling on the rest of your life in jail after being interrogated for several hours and left in jail even if you're innocent so that's how innocent people get to become felons and lose voting rights.

There are just a massive amount of fucked up things in America once you stop to examine them.
>>
>>88068309
>but the more affluent (white) communities (that have generally the same amount of crime)

You're right. That was wrong. White people actually take slightly MORE drugs and have in every gathering of statistics for the last 40 years. Gated communities to not actually have lower crime rates either. if anything it indicates to everyone that you have things hiding behind the fences to steal.

Her point is completely correct. If you can't get your ideal candidate, vote the one who is most likely to agree with them. That's what gays did with Obama even though technically he never promised gay marriage in 2008, and that worked out for them.
>>
>>88068621
Not really. As it stands it could be revoked at any time by just a turn of the courts in another direction.
>>
>>88068621
It basically works by approximation.
Not voting is like half a vote for the guy you wanted least.
>>
>>88055793
>There's a clear cultural shift happening.
I mean I get why you'd think that, but it's really as simple as people just not liking Hillary enough. She still won the popular vote by over two million people, after all, and this is with voter turn out being so abysmally low overall.

If Sanders had gotten the nomination, you'd be seeing a repeat of the 2008 election.
>>

It's exactly like Kamala said, government is a coalition. You get your positions through by just having people who would potentially agree with the people you want to lead, because those people you want are still involved in the senate, the congress, wherever. And in the end it's those people who get laws through since the president infamously doesn't have all the power.
>>
>>88068878
Well no, not fifty other states. That's factually incorrect.

Even looking at the states that didn't go blue, many of them were differentiated by extremely tiny margins of voters. That's telling. Trump's victory happened in pretty much the only possible way it could.
