I think it's pretty clear that Poppy and Kit's eventual marriage is gonna cause a lot of people to be upset. I mean you have a lowly opossum that happened to waltz right into the Fenneclands and the daughter and sister of a High King and High Queen respectively decide to marry less than a year of knowing each other. Poppy's kind is enslaved or hunted for bounty in much of the world and Renard thought that opossums were equal to pets. If Morbi can write and draw well enough he can craft a great message about love, specifically love that is frowned upon.

Honestly it's a bit of both. Poppy weighs 242.6 kilos and can lift thousands upon thousands of kilograms. She understandably has a large amount of muscle tissue on her frame. Needs to if she is going to chuck mountains at dragons. This is mostly seen on her arms and back. She does have a bit of fat though (coming from a baking family who wouldn't?) as seen on her stomach. This face right here definitely tells us how Poppy is feeling about the whole ambassador job.
In Poppy 4 she initially turned it down because she didn't want a high stress job and just wanted to spend the last few years of her life peacefully with Lily.

Then in Poppy 5 we had her talk to Friedrich and she mentioned that she was scared about messing up and disappointing everyone again.

Now here we have Kit and Chicadino talk about Poppy's attributes. Kit has a lot of faith in Poppy. She believes that her background is best suited for this position, she's sturdy enough to not back down in case someone threatens her, thinks that her reputation is great with the town, having surprised everyone at that tournament and saving the lives of many people at the Egon monestary. Chicadino though thinks that Poppy's lack of experience, potential bias towards opossums, and capability of causes a species relations disaster would make her a bad ambassador. To tell the truth, they're both right.

Then there's the little fact that Poppy is dating Kit and she knows how much this position means to her. Opossums are the only things she can see and she has spent her life trying to improve their quality of life. I'm betting Poppy is scared to death of disappointing her. Hell she might think that Kit will leave her if she fucks this job up. Pretty sure that's why the cover has a portrait of Kit looking down on Poppy.

No wonder Poppy slammed her hands on the table. She's likely freaking out about the job on the inside and she just wants to enjoy a nice dinner before she starts.

Poppy is a terrible shitty pick for an ambassador because it's a job that requires temper more than anything. It's also necessary compromise and dialogue, which Poppy is also extremely shitty at.

Basically your arguments:

A) she cannot be threatened: untrue, there are a lot of ways to threaten and blackmail someone. You don't put the Hulk as an ambassador because he is tough.

B) background: a terrible measure because it's only create bias and doesn't necessary means wisdom. You can pick a random crackwhore at the street, that doesn't mean he will do good at politics.

Also I think you guys are misinterpreting Chicadino's reputation. Yeah, he is a mob boss. But that isn't public knowledge. Hell Hallia, who was implied to spend SOME time among Chicadino and his gang (enough to briefly date Valente) thought he was great enough to recommend the Quibbles to him for fire insurance. Wouldn't be surprised if he is seen as a sort of leader for the birds of canopy. His public face is that of a business man. Ruthless and pretty tough with contracts, but that's not against the law.
