Me too, got into i when I was a kid in the late eighties and fell in love with The Dude's work, followed everything he's done since. The guy was talking about Andrew Loomis when barely anyone had heard of him, I picked up a first edition of Creative Illustration because Rude always talked him up in interviews and in his first sketchbook.

Hope you enjoyed this, /co/mrades. Planning on doing some of Steve Rude's Big Two, stuff, like his X-Men Children of the Atom miniseries, the Spidey Lifeline arc, Thor Godstorm and of course his and Dave Gibbons World's Finest miniseries. Also the various Dark Horse Nexus miniseries, too. Scanned the Nexus/Magnus Robot Fighter comics but the files were too big so gonna hafta do 'em again. I really like that story.
>>
>>88017392
Yeah, he is so underrated it's fucking criminal. But Rude was always the draw, for me, as good as Baron is. Going to probably do the Nexus/Magnus crossover, then maybe Thor: Godstorm, then the short Dark Horse minis, which I think'll be a good intro for anyone who hasn't read Nexus before.
So happy when Baron and Rude made up! One of the best writer/artist teams of all time (I think they one that twice, whether it was a Harvey or Eisner or one of each I can't quite remember). Apart from The Badger is there any other Baron stuff worth seeking out? I know he did some Big Two stuff, didn't he? I read Ginger Fox some years back and it didn't really do anything for me. It paled compared to the sheer humanity, breadth, sub-textual content, empathy and sheer amount of IDEAS that Nexus has. Have you ever read the (first published Baron/Rude comic, I'm pretty sure) short story that they published professionally, the encyclopedia salesman after the apocalypse thing? So stupid but it works! It's in some shitty Comico anthology, forgotten the name of it, it'll be with all my Rude/Nexus stuff, I should check....
>>
>>88018710
Meant to say "won that twice", as in "Best Writer/Artist Team. I think Rude has about seven best artist/penciller Eisner and Harveys to his name, plus the Russ Manning Best Newcomer Award...I fucking love him, I think he's the best "foundational" artist of the last 50 years, to be honest.

>>88016712
>"I'm gonna put you on a strict diet of The Yardbirds and The Who...Maybe throw in some Velvet Underground"
Based Madman
>>
>>88018710
>Apart from The Badger is there any other Baron stuff worth seeking out?

Badger
Nexus
Ginger Fox
Punisher
Barkley vs. Godzilla
The Chronicles of Corum
Atari Force
Sonic Disruptors
Feud
Spyke
The Butcher
Bruce Lee
Deadman

All of these are at least somewhat decent.
>>
>>88018710
>Have you ever read the (first published Baron/Rude comic, I'm pretty sure) short story that they published professionally, the encyclopedia salesman after the apocalypse thing?

No, but I'm interested if you remember the name.
>>
I've read all the Badger/Nexus crossovers but had no idea they had a Madman one too.
>>
>>88018991
Thanks man, didn't Rude do an issue of Punisher with Baron? I remember an interview in David Anthony Kraft's Comic Interview, just before the Gibbons/Rude World's Finest came out where Rude says something like: "Baron said to me, "You know you could buy a new car if you did an issue of The Punisher?" I had to research guns and all that 'cause I don't know the first thing about all that crap". You wouldn't happen to know which issue it was, would you? I'm thinking maybe between '87-'89, possibly?
Didn't realise he'd worked on Chronicles of Corum. I have one of the First GN's of that title somewhere, don't think it's written by Baron but I could be wrong, it's drawn by Michael T. Gilbert and coloured by P. Craig Russell, I think? Anyway, cheers for the info, Anon, it's appreciated.

>is Freakazoid based on Madman on some way?
Mike Allred thinks so

> [Show creator] Bruce Timm was kind enough to tell me that Madman was a direct inspiration for the show, with comics open and referred to when developing the show.

> Stupidly, I was flattered; happy to inspire anything. But when the show came out, with no acknowledgement or credit or any kind of compensation, I slowly became annoyed as everyone and their uncle confronted me with "there's this cartoon that's ripping off Madman" and "you oughta sue".

> I simply wrote a friendly letter to [show producer] Steven Spielberg telling him his production was a direct lift of my creation, I had no intention of creating ripples, I just wanted him to know that I knew. No one replied, which is fine. And to be honest, Madman is an amalgam of a half a dozen other influences. So who am I to complain (the exclamation mark on the chest still kinda urks [sic] me a little though. A little too close for comfort)

agree, the dude is rock solid
>>
>>88020050
He definitely did a full issue (may have been Punisher: War Journal?), he talked about it in the aforementioned interview.
>>88026160
Everyone in this thread is the exception to the rule that /co/ has shit taste. You have restored my faith in this board.
But, yeah, I completely agree with you, one of the best ever, or top 5 in no particular order. You seen the Rude Dude documentary? It's on sockshare and movie streaming sites like that, it's great, maybe not quite Crumb levels but pretty fucking depressing in places.
>>88026228
Thanks man...as Dan Dashly says, I'm just putting other people's work on the internet!

Any Nexus/Steve Rude requests? Think I might do the Nexus/Magnus crossover, then Nexus: God Con. I have the first three Capitol mag-sized issues and the First collection of said (which I'd rather scan than the individual mags!), if anyone new to the comic wants some background....Rude's (very) early work can be slightly shonky in places but is still better than 90% of any other cape artist out there. Always wondered how to describe Nexus. I call it a "retro-futuristic superhero sci-fi space opera", but that sounds kind of...gay.
>>
>>88027486
>He definitely did a full issue

I can't find any record of it online.

By the way, has anyone read Allred's Mormon comic?! I totally need to see that....
>>88022256
No problem, glad you enjoyed it. Rescanning The Nexus/Magnus crossover (it's Baron and Rude. Published by Valiant and Dark Horse. Sorry to shit-up such a pleasant thread with negativity but by God if there's one company I actively hate, it's Valiant).

Anyone fancy Rude's Space Ghost one-shot? Or this weird Jimmy Olsen/Supes one-off with Orion and Darkseid? That's a fun little self-contained story....
>>88020050
Yeah, he did a cover to Punisher Magazine but I'm 99% certain he did an issue because of his discussion of it in Comics Interview. I still have that somewhere; might be in the attic, I have loads of odd little Brit comics fanzines and magazines and a load of old Comics Journals...of the Jimmy Olsen thing is clled superman's pal Jimmy Olsen Legends of the DC Universe, it has, whatsisname, blue and yellow/gold costume, half-face mask, yellow shield? It's a decent read, as I remember....
>>88027798
Nah man I can't either mate but I swear i'm not making it up! He talks about Baron persuading him to do it, not knowing anything about guns so having to go to the library, mentions how it's good to force yourself out of your comfort zone...in fact I'm pretty sure the question was: "You did an issue of The Punisher, how did that come about?"....I may hafta climb into my attic and brave the lurking arachnids {shiver}...anything for my beloved /co/mrades...well, the ones in this thread with excellent taste, anyway....have a very Ditko-inspired Doctor Strange I stumbled across....
