I believe that Raven is the most moral character in RWBY. She's the only character that understands that loyalty to her family in-group is far more important than anything else. She's basically Bigby Wolf, but for RWBY.

I like to think based on how family James and Jacques are, how he knows his way around the manor well, and how Jacques seems to have some military award on one of his shelves, that the two of them are old friends from time in the military together.
