Tightest Disney movie this decade. All the story quality of movies like WiR and Zootopia while keeping the dumb fun of Frozen and Tangled.
>>
>>87982235
What about the songs? I mean I listened to some of them but how did they feel in the movie?
>>
>>87982286
Much better in the actual movie, but do yourself a favor and go to the 12.50 ticket theater in your town rather than the 10.25 dollar ticket one.

The sound quality is really testy with Moana's voice and if you don't have good surround sound she sometimes gets drowned out by the instrumentals of her own songs.

It's a little Jew-y on Disney's part. If you don't care so much about moana's actual voice and go to the cheaper theater, Maui's song and Tamatoa's song are still fine because of how deep the guys voices are.

>tfw sexist sound mixer
>>
>>87982286
You're Welcome is my favorite but How Far I'll Go gets stuck in my head the most. All the songs are good though.
>>
>>87982143
Just got out of it.
It was very okay. I can't remember anything being standout that I really liked.
The reason I was so excited about it was Lin-Manuel Miranda's involment but the songs didn't live up to my expectations.
>>
Enjoyed it much more than Frozen or Tangled.

generic. only shiny and you welcome were fun songs.

but this is princess move, what to expect?
>>
>>87982359
I think it's because of the "good" songs being stretched out into so many reprises.

Like, if Moana's song was condensed it would have been a great song rather than the three nice and dramatic punchy songs that t turned into.

>>
>>87982190
Saw it last night, and it's a solid 8/10 in my book. Maybe even an 8.5/10

There's a couple nitpicky things that may be more personal taste than anything, but the music is really good and the scenery design is great. Moana and Maui have a great chemistry together

>>87982564
>>87982664
Moana is pure as the clearest water!

>>87982681
Yeah, that's why I'm against the hypnotizing idea. I assumed it was more her being pulled into Maui's story/song, like someone would get drawn into a movie or a book. With charisma and a couple props, a guy like Maui can own the room without any magic.
>>
How was the lava witch? If necessary give me some spoilers, I don't care
>>
>>87982820
I dunno man. The rest of the movie is played pretty straight.

Moana was definitely under ~some~ kind of spell during that sequence if the song graphics made their way in one form into the "real" world.

>>
I'm surprised no one's gotten offended by the retarded chicken yet. Even though he's my favorite animal companion so I'm not exactly complaining. I've had brain damaged pets in the past so it was kind of charming for me, especially how genuinely Moana seemed to care about him despite how useless he was.

>I have crossed the horizon to find you
>>
>>87982932
I'd say there was something there. Maybe not Maui messing with Moana's mind per se, but doing something with the surroundings? His tattoos? I just wouldn't put it past him because he is a trickster god after all.
>>
So everybody's being super positive, but I wasn't a big fan. Spoilers ahead.

The movie's plot was far too similar to Tangled, so much so that it makes Frozen look original in comparison, and that felt too formulaic. The relationship between Maui and Moana was indistinguishable form Rapunzel and Flynn or Anna and Kristoff, so I don't know why they even took out the romance element.

My main problem though wasn't that actually, but rather the story just felt like it ran out of steam after the first 30 minutes or so. The tension regarding Moana wanting to leave the island was built up much more than the actual story's conflict, with the heart, so when she left it felt like the main conflict was resolved. And it certainly didn't help that most of the stuff in between meeting Maui and reaching the lava monster was basically just filler. On top of that, at the end it felt like Maui was kind of useless, since Moana herself beat the lava monster. So I do think there were some scriptwriting issues here that weren't in Tangled and Frozen.

And lastly, kind of petty, but I didn't like Moana's voice actress. I know she was young but she was kind of screechy at certain points and dull at other points, and I think it hurt the comedy.

What I did like was how vibrant and detailed the movie was, from the animation to the music. It was clear this movie had more money and time funneled into it than past Disney efforts.

Anyone else a little disappointed that Moana didn't get a tattoo herself at the end? I figured that she would have gotten the Heart of Te Fiti swirl on her back or something. Plus every other adult on the island had one, including her mother, and by the end, she's considered an adult, so it's a bit jarring that she's the only one.
It's Disney though, so I fully expect that they wouldn't let their marketable princess character have tattoos.

She doesn't have one. They absolutely would have blocked the scene differently, so that they could briefly show it, if they had gone to trouble to give her one.

Some things I like more with... More and other things I like with HFIG. More is almost too "stage/Broadway" for the place it would have been in the film, and structurally similar to Where You Are.

I do like how it incorporated the We Know the Way motif, though. And the reprise has some great moments

>we practiced all the names of everyone who came before me
>warriors, voyages, ancestors in our line
>their blood runs in mine

Shame they got rid of the idea of the grandmother teaching Moana about the importance of remembering her ancestors as a constant of their relationship, rather than a reveal right before she dies. I thought they would keep it, considering the "To know where you are going, you have to know where you have been" motif.

I think Zootopia is better, because it had much better pacing and the story was a little more interesting to me. Not to mention it was something familiar, but involved concepts not really done at Disney before. I enjoyed Moana, but the beginning was pretty slow for me.

That said, I like Moana more than Frozen, if only for Maui. He is probably the best Disney character by far this decade so far. And people on here seem to hate Big Hero 6 but I'd count that at least equal to Moana, maybe a little more for me because I love the aesthetic of San Fransokyo

After the failure of the Princess and the Frog, Disney decided to rename their movies so they're not very "princessy" , that's why Rapunzel = Tangled and Snow Queen = Frozen
>>
>>87987403
No see, I was joking about Tangled being unremarkable and not aging well since its release.
>>
>>87983148
I imagine /co/ will be more critical about it in the coming months. That's just how shit goes.

I totally relate in that, while I thought this movie was good, I'm not as enthusiastic about it as everyone on here seems to me. And that's fine, I just think calling it "the best Disney movie this decade", for example, is pushing it a little too far.

>You are complicit in our erasure, dehumanizations, and commodification. We all are. This is what Western media does to all of us.

Almost too simple for its own good. Amazing animation though.

>>87982143
where are the fucking camrips!? I want to see this movie dammit!
>>
>>87991539
There was just more going on there.
Rapunzel has that whole abusive relationship thing with Gothel, where she feels guilty about betraying someone who's clearly really shitty to her. So we see her come to terms with her own self-worth and realize that, even though Gothel is all she has in terms of family, it's a bad situation and she needs to value herself enough to get out.

Moana doesn't really have any character flaws; she's a self taught wayfinder who manages to get around okay even before Maui teaches her, she's shaping up to be a good chief, and she is super capable in a fight; her insecurities only come into play really after Maui leaves.
Maui was the more interesting character, since he had way more prevalent demons to face on their journey. The hook symbolizes his ego and self-worth; he believes he's only as good as the stuff he can do. And instead of seeing him overcome a thousand years of self loathing, he just shows up during the climax to help Moana out of the blue.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the Grandma sequence near the end, but the whole thing felt a bit predictable and simplified to me.
Like, the new Disney formula is REALLY visible with this one.
>>
>>87990565
I liked In the Heights after I saw their segment during the Tony's. Damn he's come a long way since then though, and I'm glad for it because I like his stuff. I like his attitude and how happy he seems all the time to just be doing what he loves.
>>
So anyone else feel like despite the overall movie itself being an improvement from Tangled and Frozen, Moanna herself was the weakest part of the film?
>>
>>87990565
As a musician myself, I will say between In The Heights, Step it Up, Hamilton, and Moana, he's established himself as the best composer of ensemble songs bar none. I think where he's lacking are solo singer standards. Nearly all his songs require two performers at the least.

That being said, his solo singer stuff like "How Far I'll Go", "Burn", "Paciencia y Fe", etc. are all pretty solid
>>
>>87992119

>>
>>87992119
Agreed. While Moana was a fine character herself, I still think Anna is the most fully realized character of the four princesses. Moana and Rapunzel both had the same amount of development, and Elsa's arc IMO is dependent on Anna's own development
>>
>>87992187
>Tangled has held up better than Frozen
Yes
>and is already better than Moana.
Nope.

Better animation, better songs, better jerk main secondary male character. Only thing Tangled did better was have the animal mascot have an actual use in the film and even then I found the chicken comically better then the horse.
>>
>>87992091
>Moana doesn't really have any character flaws; she's a self taught wayfinder who manages to get around okay even before Maui teaches her, she's shaping up to be a good chief, and she is super capable in a fight; her insecurities only come into play really after Maui leaves.
They make it clear prior to meeting Maui that she's not very prepared; she only met him because she got shipwrecked. She struggles with being torn between her leading her people and the sea, as well as not being prepared for either, throughout the film. Remember the dream she had where her island turned to ash? There's guilt there too

>And instead of seeing him overcome a thousand years of self loathing, he just shows up during the climax to help Moana out of the blue.
That was really my only complaint, that he just changed his mind and decided to help. But the movie was already almost two hours long so I can see how they decided not to fit some scene with him coming to terms with everything in there.

>They make it clear prior to meeting Maui that she's not very prepared; she only met him because she got shipwrecked. She struggles with being torn between her leading her people and the sea, as well as not being prepared for either, throughout the film. Remember the dream she had where her island turned to ash? There's guilt there too
Fair enough, I guess I would have liked to have seen it hammered in more, you know?

Like, the only person who comes down on her or gives her any opposition is her dad; her Grandma encourages her wanderlust and all the villagers sing her praises about how great she is.

Compare this to, say, Mulan, where no one BUT her dad thinks much of her. More adversity means we sympathize with the character more and want them to succeed. After she leaves, we don't see what's going on back home or how bad things are, she has no problem fighting the Kakamora and tricking Tamatoa and climbing that bigass cliff.

Her being TOO cocksure would have been an interesting angle; like, she fucks up Maui's hook because "I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT I'M DOING BECAUSE I'M THE PLUCKY HEROINE", but basically every decision she makes beforehand is a good one (or at least, a reasonable mistake without much consequence).

In Tangled, you see Rapunzel come to terms with her relationship with her "mother".
In Frozen, we see Anna gain a bit more common sense while Elsa learns to not be afraid to be herself.
In Moana, we get Maui coming to terms with his insecurities, but he's not the main character so we don't get to see the important parts of that struggle. Moana's conflict is all in the journey. She tries really hard and saves the day.

She has to choose between what she wants and what's good for her people, yes, but that's kinda a moot point since those things turn out to be one in the same. There's no choice to be made, she just gets what she wants.

I liked the movie just fine, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed by some aspects of it.

why, is there any place to go that isn't a beach front hotel?
>>
>>87993596
But that was introduced at the beginning of the third act.

>Has to do stuff as preparation to be Chief
>"Good job, you're doing great."
>Wants to go and sail the seas
>"Your father is wrong, you're not being selfish, you're right, you're the chosen one"
>Maui gets mad, tells her she's not special and going through the rocks was a stupid mistake
>"Actually no it totally would have worked my bad sorry"
>I saved the day but I still have to choose between sailing the sea and leading my people
>"Lol no you can do both don't worry hooray"

Maui had so much more going on, but we didn't get to see the most important parts of his arc. It would have been one thing if she kept messing up at every turn, but she out-performed the demigod whenever trouble showed up.

If she constantly tried to be a big bad hero to prove to her dad that she's a capable adventurer or something, only to get mostly owned before Maui bails her out, then we'd have something. She'd need to redeem herself from her own flaws and insecurities. Instead she makes one bad decision that has exactly no permanent consequences.

There is no winning with these people. She'd be complaining about sexual objectification if young Moana had a romantic subplot, but here she is complaining of "dehumanizing" her because she doesn't have a romantic subplot.

I saw both Moana and Tangled today and can say Tangled feels much more by the numbers compared to Moana. Moana succeeded at the self-referential jokes, and delivered a way less predictable story. Tangled is the definition of the Disney Princess formula whereas Frozen and Moana both subverted it in their own ways with Moana being a more extreme example. No love interest and no legit straightforward big bad in the story. You're holding Rapunzel as more complex due to her relationship with Gothel more than anything about herself as a character. Besides that she was basic naive girl. Nothing that complex. Moana was more about embracing and struggling with her identity/destiny and what that meant to her present and future.

Some of the trees are actually pushing up against her and cradling her, and she interacts with them independent of Maui. I'm. It trying to convince anyone to let go of thinking that she was just going along with it, that's the likely story and intent of the movie and the directors.

What I'm saying is that, if you just take the visuals and what Moana is doing in the song, it's plausible to think that something beyond just getting caught up in the song is happening.

The turtle was just symbolic for Moana and the ocean's relationship. Moana didn't carry the turtle to the shore but let it make the journey itself, with some minor guidance. The ocean didn't just super jet Moana's boat to where she needed to go, but let her do this on her own.

Its twofold why it chose a human.
If it had just given the heart back humans would have still stayed isolated on the islands and the ocean would have been alone, and Tefi ti might have continued letting her anger rule her and destroyed even after she regained her heart. I just realized that part of the reason that Tui's friend died, and Moana's first boat crashed, was because they were both using the shallow water fishing boats, that can't hold up to deep water waves as well as the hidden ones can

Well it's either that or the ocean orchestrated the friend's death, so that the chief would be afraid and try to keep Moana away from the ocean, which would only make her love it more

>think to myself through the movie the songs are forced and awkward like in Frozen and PatF. Like its over-eager to be a renaissance era disney movie.

so what is it about the songs this time? Is it that so much effort went into the scenes themselves? I feel like every song had a place in this movie too, unlike the reindeer and troll songs in Frozen.

I love that his backstory is so easy to miss if you're not paying attention. He and Maui used to be friends, until the crab got the idea to start imitating him by covering himself with treasure. Then he fell into madness and Maui had to chop off one of his legs.

That's why the crab is so versed on the guy's history.

For one because they are unique by taking inspiration from that regions music, which frozen didnt. Not many people have heard tradition Southeastern Asian music before and its actually not bad.
For another they got a professional islander musician to come in and pour his heart into the songs along with Lin and the rest. He had a passion for getting that music and culture out there and it really shown through.
And on top of that Lin Manual is just an insanely talented music maker.

Really fucking good.
Catchy tunes, but the main tune was not as defining as say "Under the Sea".
However, I'd say this movie definitely trumps The Little Mermaid.

I can't decide how this fits in between Zootopia and Frozen however. Very close.

>Zootopia could easily be a DreamWorks film, although it's still a good movie and I'm not saying it isn't.

Zootopia felt like Disney copying Dreamworks and then dropping the mic. It's like they looked at the sort of shit Dreamworks does -- talking animal city, useless pop star voice actor, forced pop song, tons of obvious pop culture references, dumb dance party ending -- and said, "yes, but what if it were actually good?"
