While this is actually a decent strip for Willis, I'm concerned about Becky's arm in the last panel. It's very apparent that he just drew it like it goes over everything and doesn't actually come from anywhere.

If you don't like it, then hide it. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to patiently wait for patreanon so we can resume criticizing a mediocre webcomic artist to make ourselves feel better.

This was probably the best one this week, not saying much but oh well

Of course it doesn't resemble an Appalachian accent, it doesn't resemble any of the Southern accents, not even a generic Hollywood Southern accent, and is mostly just her pronouncing a few words incorrectly. But canonically she picked up an accent from living in Tennessee for five years.

it's been 6 years and the improvement has been slight.

shit, I've improved more in my art in that time, and I draw maybe once every 3 months. I wouldn't say I'm at all talented, but I'm definitely a fuckton better than I was 6 years ago.
>>
>>87976861
No, really, I don't give any slack to this piece of shit called Willis, but I think he did improve by a good margin. Even if he phones it in at every turn, getting one strip a day plus bonus plus porn does something.

his art is incredibly simplistic, lacking a fuckton of detail, and he still fails at a lot of simple detail.

especially considering his daily drawing, as well as getting PAID to do that shit, you'd think his shit would look far better than it does. As it is, however, he's surrounded himself solely with yes-men and gotten completely complacent.

also, he's supposed to be standing with his legs apart, and the bottom of his shirt isn't supposed to be his groin, so the legs would still be going.

>>
>>87977403
>it was still clearly drawn by a total amateur
you're not wrong. I could likely get better if I tried, but as I said, I get the urge to draw maybe once every few months(if I'm lucky).

You only do things when you got urges? Do I have to call Batman here?
>>
>>87977675
I do voice work almost daily because I have a passion for it.

I get bored of drawing fairly quickly, and don't have an exceptional drive to improve at it.

I have ADHD, so I have issues focusing on things that don't super catch my interest, leading me to quickly lose interest in things that I was initially into. My art hasn't gotten to what I call 'good' as a result, and I know my voice work could use improvements as well. That's why I'm in college, and why I've been screwing around with DoA.

Also there's no reason for her to hate or dislike Becky and Dina unless she's homophobic which is probably the fucking case knowing Willis.

Willis needs to be nice to Mary and undo the fucking character assassination; She was much better as a bitchy-but-harmless Christian tightass, instead of Snidely Whiplash.
>>
>>87979718

Well to be fair she was always kind of a grossly hypocritical, self-righteous asshole, even before Dumbing of Age.

But, like, why can't she have *character* at all here? Even way back when Willy was just starting out she was more interesting with better motivations than now. I don't care how many one-note bigots Cerberus knows IRL whose sole, singular purpose in life is to put "her people" in camps, it's still poor character, if character it could be called.

>>87979852
>Well to be fair she was always kind of a grossly hypocritical, self-righteous asshole, even before Dumbing of Age.

Self-righteous, sure, but both the hypocrite and the asshole aspects were themselves a character assassination. Willis publicly admitted in his comic-by-comic Roomies commentary that Mary was meant to just be a good-guy fundamentalist Christian, and it was only later on when he got disillusioned with religion that he decided to make her the hypocritical asshole.

To quote from the beginning:

>Mary was a very calculated character addition. I needed someone cheerful to replace Joyce and I needed someone with a strong sense of moral rightness to replace Danny’s sudden lack of it. I was super excited about Mary! I piled on every damn trait onto her I thought I thought was attractive. Check out that sweater vest and those luscious brown locks and bright dark eyes. She was an artist, too. And, hell, she was into Jesus! Total hottie manic pixie dream girl, for Christ.
>when i created her i did not realize my list of turn-ons was out of date

and later:

>Mary’s starting to grate on my nerves, so BAM, she’s now an artist. That’s a positive trait, right?

and a little after that:

>Here’s me trying to give Mary some depth back before I decided, oh what the hell, she’s just evil. She mirrors a few of my feelings I had when I was her age — I liked hills and mountains, and I wanted to live in them when I grew up, like in Colorado or something.

[continued]
>>
>>87980168

and later again:

>Oh yeah, here we go. Here’s where I definitely decided Mary wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, that she’s kind of a little stuck up her own ass.
>It’s the way it had to be. Billie’s the source of her own moralizing. She doesn’t need a Mary, and Billie’s being a better Mary to Danny than Mary is, with her “oh I can’t bang you because of Reasons” schtick. And so suddenly Mary is surplus to requirements. She has to find another role.
>Let us discover that role, together.

and the next comic:

>And so Mary’s smile disappears, her judgmental attitude surfaces, and so suddenly we have the Mary you may recognize from Dumbing of Age. Her metamorphosis is complete.

Then the very next Mary-centric arc was about Mary having premarital hanky-panky and framing her friend to divert away from it. Also, she was literally never happy again.

...also, while looking through old Mary comics, I came across this:

>I’m not sure why Mary isn’t still Sal’s childhood friend in Dumbing of Age. Maybe when I was setting everything up, I just plain forgot.

Can you imagine that? Willis giving DoA's Mary a FRIEND? Man, that would've been crazy!

(Say, can someone put these quotes somewhere? I don't want to have to dig them up again next time someone asks "What was Mary like to begin with?")
>>
I read a dozen webcomics better than this.

Why is doa the only thread on co?
>>
>>87980505
One, /co/ hates more easily than it likes. That's why the board gets cluttered with 3 dozen different threads about Champions every time it releases a new issue

Two, there are plenty of other webcomics that get threads whenever they update, some of which /co/ actually likes. K6BD, Homestuck, Endtown, Gunnerkrigg, Paranatural, the scaly waifu comic. There's literally a Poppy O'Possum thread that's been going on since Friday.

Three, see the responses to >>87972682
>>
>>87980505
Because talking about good comics is boring.
>This comic is good

>>
>>87980181
>Can you imagine that? Willis giving DoA's Mary a FRIEND? Man, that would've been crazy!

Why not? DoA Sal is a self-righteous hypocrite too. Granted, nothing Willis did is wrong from a creative sense, repurposing a character into something new when you change story direction is pretty common, it's just that he's failing to anything interesting with it.

>>87980505
Make threads about them and quit your bitching.
>>
>>87980168
>>87980181
So what Willis is saying is that Mary is essentially being treated like an ex-girlfriend. That is, if Mary were based upon somebody in reality, that somebody would be an ex-girlfriend of Willis' who broke up with him, and thus Willis decided to make her into an antagonistic character out of spite.
>>
>>87980505
Stop being a coward and make threads about your dumb comics so we can point out how shit they are.

>strictly carnivorous

>>
>>87980168
>>87980181
I think this just pinpoints why Willis's various issues are so much more interesting than your average sub-par artist.

Most artists usually ditch their juvenalia because the stench of their amateur decisions clings to them like mud on a pig. But Willis, for the entirety of his 20-year career as an artist, never completely abandoned his earlier work OR his juvenile tendencies, so we get to see the ebb and flow of his faults over the course of years of work

Like, if he was a normal artist, then Danny's status as an author avatar would have just been a footnote in his career. But he keeps bringing Danny back, so we're still looking at him and trying to figure out what the hell he's still doing here.
>>
>>87981155
Most artists would have simply given Danny another role to play or developed the character beyond their roots as an avatar. Earlier in DoA he was pretty close to making Danny a counterpoint to Dorothy, but instead had him slip back into milquetoast blandness without having the decency to present it as a character flaw.
>>
>>87981250
Both Danny and Ethan have the same problem: they were the generic straight-men in their original comics, which was fine when they were the protagonists but now that they're side-characters it's too obvious that they have no defining personality traits. Willis wants to feature them and their original personalities because they were major characters before, but that's not how good stories are written.

...Well, most of their original personalities. Danny's conflict with tradition and religion got dumped because he wanted just Joyce to have that, and Ethan's love of toys and internet debates got dumped because Willis already had Shortpacked to make such jokes with.
>>
>>87981875
Ethan's obsession with toys and stupid internet debates is slowly coming back. And while it pissed me off back in Shortpacked, at this point, I'll take anything that gives Ethan character besides 'good-looking gay milquetoast'
>>
>>87981875
Like I said, Danny could be good counterpoint to Dorothy. Dorothy is driven and focused while Danny is impulsive and romantic yet at the same time Dorothy's immediate and long-term goals are far more unrealistic than Danny's. They both got into relationships soon after they broke up that started as fun flings but turned bad; Dorothy wanted a casual thing but found herself with a strong emotional investment in Walky while Danny hooked up with Amber for the thrill only to get dumped due to Amber's mental issues.

Danny is in a good place for development right now if Willis were willing to put the time into it. You've got his and Ethan's mutual attraction that they are refusing to act on due to their mutual issues with Amber. You've got Sal taking an interest in his well-being in her own aggressively standoffish sort of way. And you have all the things you could do with Danny openly acting on his bisexuality.

Even if Ethan and Danny are the straight-men there is no reason why you can't give them interesting traits while still letting the other characters bounce off of them.

...yeah this whole strip is trash.
>>
I was reading Willis' shit for a very long time. I read Roomies, I read It's Walky, and I read a good chunk of Shortpacked and the start of Dumbing of Age.

I stopped reading once they got to the point where every fucking character started turning gay for some reason and Willis started really getting preachy with the Social Justice stuff.

This seems to happen a lot with webcomics in the last few years. They go from just fun comics to being the authors soapbox about political issues and the authors turn into huge dicks.
>>
>>87979274
what a terrible strip.
>>
>>87979321
The joke is they ordered food, and got the wrong food! Just imagine this dialogue in Big Bang Theory. I see five places to insert laugh track.
>>
>>87979521
I read all of Shortpacked, and this strip still isn't funny. Sydney Yus has always been stupid and pointless.

>>87979588
There is no plot, and the characters don't matter. You're right here with the rest of us.

>>87980168
>Check out that sweater vest and those luscious brown locks and bright dark eyes. She was an artist, too.
>and later:
>Mary’s starting to grate on my nerves, so BAM, she’s now an artist. That’s a positive trait, right?

So Willis is not only incapable of remembering his own stories, plots, and decisions, but he can't remember what he wrote 10 seconds ago. You know he uploaded all of these at once, so there's no way he could have legitimately forgotten what he wrote during the uploading.

>when i created her i did not realize my list of turn-ons was out of date
Also, his list of turn-ons wasn't out-of-date, because they were still turn-ons for him. What an idiot.

>(Say, can someone put these quotes somewhere? I don't want to have to dig them up again next time someone asks "What was Mary like to begin with?")

>>87985189
Maybe if we add enough laugh tracks, we won't have to listen to these characters blab on about stupid stuff.
>>
>>87985690
>Sydney Yus has always been stupid and pointless.

Even keeping her personality the same, Sydney could fit right in a college setting as one of those people who go completely mental from the stress of college.
>>
>>87985978
I'd probably read an arc about the rest of the DoA cast getting drawn into a franchise war between Galasso's Pizza and Sydney's Burger & Fries Joint. On the few occasions that she actually works, she usually works better when facing off against people just as cartoonish as she is

Or you know what, fuck, Willis's 'Ruth is somehow the best RA despite all visual evidence' thing would actually work if Sydney was one of the other RAs. I mean, that would raise the question of why they don't just fire Sydney, but it'd at least be some justification.
>>
>>87985978
She can even go around threatening to end professors who give her poor grades. Granted, given this is DoA and not Shortpacked, it'll only be hilarious until she goes V-Tech and actual assault or kidnap teachers and students.

>I mean, that would raise the question of why they don't just fire Sydney, but it'd at least be some justification.

Also, I'm unsure of how Dina is supposed to be speaking in the second panel. Why is Becky's name an afterthought in her question?
>>
>>87979274
Wow, this is pretty fucking awful. How was this created?
>>
>>87985189
>Silence!
That little murmur laugh that comes from a few people in the audience.

>Perhaps this pizza will quell your senseless, sapphic pawing.
An actual burst of laughter from most of the room, but not long enough for a long pause.

>Isn't it?
An exasperated laugh across the room that's more of a rollover from the previous laughter.

>ISN'T IT?
The crowd loses it. This is the loud form of laugh that gets the most air time on clip show moments.

>See this tsaagan mangas. . .
The laughter that was dying down builds up just a little at the word, but not enough that Becky stops talking.

>RARRR
It builds again at Dina, this time causing an awkward pause as the waiter has to wait to deliver his next line.

>FLESH IS FOR WINNERS.
The theater is done. The laughter has actual applause at this point. Everyone who didn't know this was funny has now been corrected by the editing room. The scene changes and the laughter continues over the establishment shot of the next scene.

That would require forethought on the part of Willis.
>>
>>87996756
It's really a matter of timing. Sydney is a zany character so needs to be used during zany plots. Right now we have serious plots.
>>
>>87997105
Comparative to the other plots going on right now, the Becky/Dina story is comedic.
But it's still relatively grounded, while Sydney is just plain Out There.

Dina wished for a companion with a cursed monkey's paw.
>>
>>87998034
I really feel that if Willis wants to use Sydney despite DoA being more grounded his best option would be to make her a psycho copycat of Amazi-Girl.
>>
>>87998154
Dina don't care. People are weird and confusing to her at the best of times, Becky's just louder than most.

She should have asked Sarah out on a date.
>>
>>87992456
>Fille, soda!
>>
>>87998555
I'd like to see a story where Dina's motivations for seeking a relationship with Becky are more personal/selfish, and she only dates her because she feels it makes her look normal.

I'm not saying that's what I believe to be the case; I'm just saying it would make for an interesting story, especially if the idea that Becky only dates Dina to rebound off of being rejected by Joyce sticks.
>>
>>87998632
That's more or less why Dina pursued Becky in the first place. She was tired of everyone treating her like a child and Becky showed a personal interest in her.

>>
>>87972682

Youre the same guy asking this in every thread, aren't you?
>>
Also not two seconds after posting I realize this is a perfect setup for Becky to get a job, now that she's bested one of Galasso's employees in some kind of mental combat or whatever. I bet you anything that's what happens.
>>
>>87998555
>She should have asked Sarah out on a date.

>Dina slowly and persistently wearing down Sarah's misanthropy because deep down she's intensely attracted to her. However, they relate to each other in their inability to connect with others. They take solace in their relationship, when they don't get other people, they both know they share a deep emotional connection with someone.
Sounds like it would've been great.

>>87998742
Wow, I thought about calling this, just on the 'funny' idea that this would've been more set up than when she got fired in Shortpacked.
>>
>>87998742
I forgot to suggest that Sydney was probably being set up to be fired, thus becoming a foil to Becky after SHE gets a job at Galasso's Pizza now that there's an opening.

Anyways, I guess the next few strips will be Becky realizing there's a position at Galasso's open, and so she applies for the job.

>>87998789
>>87998815
Goddammit, we all had the same idea.
Is DoA just that predictable now? Or just this storyline? I mean, hell, the first thing we saw when we switched to this setting was Becky filling out job applications.
>>
>>87998815
>Becky joins the Shortpacked-esque environment of Galasso's, her chirpy optimism slowly being worn down into dull cynicism from the oppressive daily grind of food service

Maybe there is a silver lining to all this.
>>
>>87998883
Wrong-O.
She's going to get a job that we rarely (if ever) see her working at, which we're only exploring now so that 1.) Willis can end the character story arc of Becky looking for a job, and B.) Becky can spend money willy-nilly without people questioning whether or not she should be saving up her money.

Which she SHOULD if she wants to repay Joyce's father in a timely manner. But we're not going to be exploring that storyline either.
>>
>>87998789
I sincerely enjoyed the little bit between Dina and Sarah during the Joyce Goes Home arc. Sarah is probably the most complex and "human" character of DoA and I'm glad that Willis doesn't use her often.

Still a gesture of goodwill to pay back somebody who is helping you, regardless of whether or not they want you to do so. If they refuse when presented the money, THEN you know that they mean it.

Or you can always trade it back and forth as a running gag, like these two brothers who kept giving each other the same pair of pants for each others' birthday year after year, finding more and more complex means of packaging the pants just to fuck with the other.

It's pretty simple to recreate. Amber is kneeling and leaning forward, Danny is standing and propping one leg over Amber's shoulder and bracing himself on the wall. It's an unnecessarily complex pose, as it'd be the same if Danny stood normally with his legs spread and Amber scooted forward, but unnecessarily complex poses are a staple of porn in general.

I feel like most of the elements that would be of value in this are obscured. Like why is the leg over the shoulder near the camera instead of in the back so we can see more of her face and the dick and balls and maybe fingering action. Even a behind the back shot of Amber that showed off more of Danny's expression and clothing struggles might be better.

It feels like a decent composition for a part of a comic, but alone it's pretty weak. But it's not like the Marcy one that is supposed to be kinda more playful, it's a blow job scene with legitijmately less impact than Walky and Dorothy lounging naked. I got more aroused typing out what it could be, because stories are good at that, you fill in the blanks. With images you don't want to imply as much as you wanna show.

Maybe I'm alone on this though.
>>
>>87999663
I'll be honest. Some of it I can fap to (due to my fetish of chubby girls and femdom). Namely the Billie one and the 2nd Amazi-girl one. Willis' expressions and speedlines are pretty silly though and the dialogue is cringey.

It's less so that he failed to prop her up as a villain and more that he accidentally gave her a clear motivation for her actions, other than the "transphobic slur" which seriously could have been pulled off better if he had wanted to make it sting.

Like, seriously, I can't get over how Mary and Carla had almost zero interaction until that storyline, and thus Mary couldn't have possibly learned of Carla's transsexuality unless it had happened off-screen, which would be an awful thing to do from a writer's standpoint, especially given how important that development would have been at a later date. Like, at least there's precedent for Mary knowing about Carla and Ruth's relationship.

In any case, Mary had a clear motivation for her actions. That's really more than you can say for most of the "hero" characters in DoA.

>>
>>88014229
Has he actually said anything like that, or are you just assuming because that's exactly the kind of thought process he has?
>>
>>88005696

He's further fucked up the storyline because he pretty much retconned the whole thing.

How it Happened:
>Carla bugs Mary because Carla is a bitch, Mary gets fed up over a long period and "misgenders" her, Ruth overhears finally and intervenes, but fed-up Mary calls her on her bullshit and goes back to her room
How it Happened Retrospectively:
>Mary is a bigot who goes out of her way to hurt poor minorities and shit. She engineered the incident because she hates Carla (despite not interacting with her more than once before) and wanted to blackmail Ruth. It wasn't opportunity, it was strategy.

Which incidentally fucks up the whole "misgendering is bad even if it's done in retaliation" moral because now Mary engineered it half out of desire to do so, not due to provocation.

No see, we needed that in order for people to find out that Becky's mom tried to kill herself and debate whether or not it was because she was a closet lesbian.

Or no, it's so Willis could waste time only to fix everything in two strips months down the line.
>>
>>88022272
Y'know, I honestly thought she'd at least have to fill out an application.
Like, seriously, Willis set up a giant pile of applications. At least make her groan about having to fill out one more. You could have a joke about the application being, like, two questions.

>>88022353
The house break-in was to get her Social Security card, I believe. You need your Social SSN Number for more than work, after all.

But yeah, this anti-climax of an ending just makes previous storylines less appealing. It's like how the car chase gets stupider when you realize nobody's going to die thanks to Willis' no-death clause.

Hell, his porn comics have better climaxes than his actual storylines.
>>
>>88022353
She still needs her social security card, she just managed to skip the application and interview part of getting a job.
>>
>>88022272
WHO THE FUCK TALKS LIKE THIS?

IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE POSH? IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE AUTISTIC?
>>
>>88022526

>Becky has personal items in the house and is immediate family to her father, now in prison
>could just ask the local police to allow her in the house to retrieve personal items
>instead she breaks in with Joyce and whats-his/her-name because the police wouldn't help a lesbian I guess
>>

>Hell, his porn comics have better climaxes than his actual storylines.

Don't turn this thread into a house of LIES, anon.

Also, lets be honest, we've seen all of two businesses in this comic so it's always been narrowed down to Galasso's or Chic-Fil-A.
>>
>>88022578
Galasso? He's a just a weirdo. His shtick has always been that he's a James Bond villain/Cobra Commander type running a small business.
>>

>becky walks into pizza shop
>resolves things with her loving and supportive girlfriend
>gets job for no reason
>gets employee of the month for no reason
This is reaching CAD levels of everything-falls-into-her-lap. Really the only difference is that she's not the new store owner.

I know a lot of lgbt characters in stories focus on the abusive and discriminatory aspects and show a lot of suffering that can overshadow them as character. This seems to be... the exact opposite? Isn't this just as bad? Not to ignore that she has had low moments, losing her family, Joyce rejecting her, Ross kidnapping her, Carol's disapproval, etc., but Willis' idea of "the world is going to just bend over to make everything right for Becky" comes off as less satisfying than if she was just not having the issues in the first place.

Edit: punched up my edit
>>
>>88022822
I feel like you should have something in panel four about her being a lesbian, but am not sure the best way to go about it.

Is Ken going to be the put-upon straight man to Becky's wacky antics whenever Willis cuts to her job?
>>
>>88022884
>I won't deliver the wrong pizza to lesbians?

To answer your second question: in b4 Becky becomes a college lesbian.
>>
>>88022884
don't count on it, ken would have to develop a personality first
>>

I'm not sure why you're surprised. Willis's second rule, besides no one dying in DoA, is that Becky always gets what she wants, and when she doesn't get what she wants, she just stops caring about it.

Got rejected by her best friend? Picks up a qt asian girl within days as a rebound who's 100% attracted to you and almost never talks about her old crush. Dad goes crazy for no good reason? Hah, screw any lingering sentiment towards someone who's clearly going through some issues because of his dead wife and a sudden change in his life. Give him the double bird and reduce your relationship with him to a punchline. And let's just ignore any logistical or legal problems with squatting in a dorm while trying to apply for a job, or just squatting in a dorm period. Hell, you can even say that Hank magically became the sensible one out of Joyce's parents because someone with authority had to stand up for Becky.

Becky stopped being a character around the time that she started dating Dina and started being a goddamn cardboard cutout.
>>
>>88022822
The funny thing is that I can actually see Galasso saying that last line. He's so tone deaf about anything regarding human sexuality that he'd say it without thinking twice.
>>
>>88023014
>legal problems of squatting in a dorm

Willis was able to do it just fine back in the day
>>
>>88023065
Willis did it 20 fucking years ago. I'd like to think that IU has better rules about that sort of thing at this point.

Maybe even a section in the rulebook with Willis's face on it that says "See this motherfucker? Don't do what he did."
>>
>>88022753
Nah, this is more like Least I Could Do levels of Mary Sue
>>
>>88022353

I'm more upset that I didn't see it coming

The fact that you haven't gotten this much attention, let alone the same attention you used to get, from your shitposts in weeks, is telling on how you immediately jumped to the idea of people having anything to do with your shit.
>>
>>88022272
Why does Willis insist on making their gums horrifically jagged at times?
>>
>>88024109
what? your gums don't change shape depending on how hard you Smile?
>>
>>88022930
College lesbian implies Becky won't get with Ken until after graduation.

>>88022932
He's got a narrative role, which according to Willis is close enough.

>>88023065
>>88023176
It'd actually be pretty simple for him to do so, if he paid his dorm fee and tuition but didn't register for classes it would be weeks before he would be auto disenrolled.

>>88023014
From an objective standpoint Becky has had a shitty life but Willis doesn't want to touch it.
