Does this seem like a villain to you? They're trying to make us sympathize with her, feel her pain. Incidentally that's why the burned half of her face is covered up. Villains get villainous scars. It's the exact same reason we always looked at Zuko from the scarred side early on in avatar but looked at his unburnt face as he became more of an ally.

Cinder's situation is a bit more complicated since unlike zuko she has killed people, though it's unclear if ozpin is really dead given that we were given a scene that begged us to question it. The fact of the matter is that her redemption won't be accepted by the viewers or cast if she lives through it. Death by redemption is her only option
