For many years I would hear tales from my dad's friend that supposedly grew up with Castro. How he spent nights at his parents having dinner and became adults alongside one another. How he then got overly political and drifted away from family and friend. How Fidel betrayed Angel.

Castro's only crime on the geopolitical stage was not bowing to the United States. The USA has always tolerated and assisted tyrannical regimes. It's staggering to see how ignorant people on /co/ are and how eager they are to parrot whatever they've heard about the man.

He wasn't a communist dictator, the US simply branded him that way while the Russians called him an imperialist. His entire life from the moment the revolution was on was a nightmare of walking a thin line of eggshells between the Soviet Union and USA, and neither ever liked him OR Cuba. He didn't lead a communist revolution, but he lead both militarists, intellectuals AND communists to victory under the banner of justice for Cuba. The US were very angry because they had spent years putting his predecessor in power, and because of this his alliance with the USSR was about survival. There were nowhere else to turn.

Cuba's relationship with Russia was always strained even from the beginning. In return for providing Cuba with just about anything, the Soviets had a steep price which Castro felt was simply a way of handing the leadership over to them piece by piece. After the missile crisis he felt that the Soviets had betrayed Cuba by backing down and signing an agreement with the US without ever consulting him despite the proposed missile base being on Cuban ground, and indeed it helped end the already struggling Cuban-Soviet alliance. As a result his people slowly started to suffer more and more from a lack of imported goods. Now both the east and west were effectively closed

For a man who genuinely cared about his people and country, and who went to jail and almost died three times for it, he was probably out of his wits about what to do for most of the time he was in office. His and Raul's dreams of expanding the revolution outside Cuba was also swiftly destroyed both by the Soviet Union and the US who both simultaneously worked against him. The biggest blow being Che Guevara getting killed, one of the pillars of the Cuban revolution.

He was sat between a rock and a hard place for 60+ years, with no options at all.

Considering the YUGE amount of Bernie supporters in the US, especially post-election, I'd say enough Americans don't connect Socialism directly with Communism anymore.

Too bad it doesn't matter, because the only fucking thing that's important for people who hated Trump and Hillary would be to campaign to unfuck the Primary process (seriously, in two states there's literally no reason to vote in the Primary because the popular vote has no effect on delegates) but everyone has already forgotten it and is just focused on how much they hate Trump/Hillary.

He was a revolutionary. He trained and equipped anyone who fought to topple tyranny. No matter if they were communist, fascist or religious. He believed in the people's right to govern themselves, or to choose someone to govern (paradoxically and yes, tragically). He didn't start a revolution thinking he would end up leading the country, he had planned to go abroad and help other revolutions PRECISELY like Che Guevara fought with his life for Cuba despite being BOLIVIAN.

And even more tragically, the Soviets who enjoyed the fruits of his revolution were the leaders of some of the regimes that Castro's revolutionary trainees wanted to topple, so they tried to punish him for it. There's no way you can look at that picture and not think it's sad. He disposes of a dictator, then his dreams are slowly crushed from both sides between an international power struggle between two giants and he is forced to pick the lesser evil for his people, becoming forever demonized in the process and in doing so becoming the dictator he deposed. In the end he had no fight left for revolutions. No more fight left to make the world better.

No he fucking didn't. He despised the Soviet Union for backing down without ever consulting him, despite it being his country and his ass on the line.
