Why is Laika obsessed with ghost family members stealing the eyes of children?
>>87945934
Who knows, maybe it's an irrational fear that the ceo of Laika has.
>>87946339
The only irrational fear Laika's CEO has is advertising their movies.
Coraline has the story in which the antagonist suffers from the fear that her eyes may get stolen(by being sewn with buttons). Maybe film maker have a fetish about that.
>>87945934
I love the story of how Laika came to be.
The CEO of Nike bought the studio behind the California Raisons and put his failed rapper son in charge who turned out to be a really talented animator.
So, is there anyone else who will draw the bad ending of Coraline?.
>>87947762
Is that seriously how the company got started?
That's fucking wonderful.
And actually explains how they're able to keep pumping out expensive, labor-intensive movies despite only earning modest financial success.
movie sucked dude
>>87947882
lol okI will say that Laika needs better writing, though
>>87945934
Because Laika's CEO believes eyes are the best way to cleanse the beastly idiocy.
>>87947854
Yeah, Nike's CEO has about a 25 billion dollar worth, Laika pretty much has no financial restraints or studio demands to adhere to so everything they make is a complete labour of love.
>>87947929
The actual plot of the movie is simplistic to the point of feeling cliche at times. But I think that just gives it more of a folk tale kinda feel, which plays into the theme of storytelling pretty well.
I blinked.
That Gashadakuro scene was awesome. the weak point for me is the dad, it felt like he was trying to hard to be silly. I would have rather him be a silent giant with an unmoving carapace face.
>>87948485
Actual spoilers.I've seen other people complain about the dad being a goof, but that added more pathos to the big reveal for me. Having a proud, clever samurai warped into a doofy beetle man without any memory of his wife or child is actually kinda tragic. And the fact that he goes throughout the entire movie with his wife and kid without even recognizing them until moments before his death heightens it.
>>87945934
I loved this, Easily my favorite of their movies.
I saw the quad Laika set at wallmart and was tempted to buy it. Usually I'm a piratefag, but I really had to stop myself from buying it.poor as fuck man
>>87945934
Not my favorite Laika story at all but Kubo was my favorite Laika protagonist. He was adorable and he got so much more shit than he deserved. The ending straight up sucked for him. Even his fucking murderous moon grandpa got a happier ending.
On a scale of 1 to 10 how assblasted will /co/ be when this inevitably loses the Oscar to Finding Dory?Probably an 11 for me.
>>87950946
It'll lose to Moana, not Finding Dory.If it loses to Sausage Party I will fucking kill someone.
>>87950725
Is there a male equivalent of daughteru? 'Cause Kubo gave me all sorts of parental feels.
>>87951100
Same here. It made it so much worse to watch him suffer so much even at the end. Fuck Laika for toying with my emotions like that.
do you think Kubo has a feminine penis? or is it godly?
>>87951157
Godly. Dude's half moon royalty, half samurai.
>>87945934
Instead of asking why Laika is obsessed with it, you should be asking why ghost family members are obsessed with stealing kids eyes.
>>87947929
>Admitting their not good at writing
>Still smug about some anon not liking it
Shit writing and pretty visions equals an ok movie, pham. Which is exactly what Kubo was.
>>87951293
>Horse dicked one eyed shota
>>87950946
I will be 10/10 assblasted if it loses to anything other than Zootopia
>>87950946
Oscars are meaningless when it comes to animation but I will tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Kubo does not disserve the Oscar at all.
>>87945934
>just get done watching this and a thread hits the front page
Neat
Started out great but felt horribly rushed getting the sword and armor then the finale was 10/10 GOAT.
My only issue was the voice casting for beetle and would have liked a less...boisterous voice for him.
Anyone know how this did overseas?
>>87951528
I actually really liked that about Beetle's voice. He sounded like a fun, roughhouse kind of dad.
>>87951615
I dont know why but I found it dissatisfying. I kept wanting a deeper more reassuring voice.
Kubo's story and general plot structure were hot hot garbage
>>87951642
>Story was hot garbage
No it was a pretty good story that followed the "hero's journey" template and thematically all the elements worked.
The real issue was the structure and pacing. Really bad pacing hurt this movie quite a bit. He didnt have enough time alone with monkey to build up an actual relationship. Beetle could have used a couple of more scenes with him bonding with kubo. Not to mention that the stuff between beetle and monkey could have used another couple scenes to better set up their growing respect for each other.Though that fight scene with the giant skeleton while visually interesting, was hot garbage in the long run. It relied too much on the "THIS WILL LOOK GREAT IN 3D" aspect and it made the fight kinda shit.
>>87948108
I'm shocked they don't do any tie-ins.
Nike Kubo shoes for kids, or marketing shoelaces with Coraline on them.
>>87947950
>mfw my favorite mythological monster becomes the best part of one of the greatest movies of this decade
>>87948485
>>87948624
Yeah, he was a bit too goofy. Thinking back on it I'd have liked if his unawareness of his past was a fear. Like a worry that he'd possibly been cursed for abandoning his lord, that protecting Kubo was his possible redemption of a possible dishonor, and a hint of Monkey being guilty for not cluing him in.
>>87951854
Your favorite mythological monster is a skellington?
>>87951891
> The Gashadokuro are spirits that take the form of giant skeletons and are fifteen times taller than an average person, said to be created from the amassed bones of people who died of starvation. These Yōkai roam after midnight, grabbing lone travelers and biting off their heads to drink their spraying blood. There is a tell sign as the victim would hear the sound of loud ringing in the ear.
>>87947762
>failed in singing
>succeeded in animating
Fantastic.
>>87951930
That ringing is his spine dragging on the ground in the versions of the myth where he has no pelvis or legs. Oh, he can be selectively corporeal so he can grab you out of bed from outside your house and bite your head off before you can even scream.
The sea monster was a great myth too.
>The Umibōzu is said to live in the ocean and capsize the ship of anyone who dares speak to it. This spirit's name, which combines the character for "sea" with the character of "Buddhist monk," is possibly related to the fact that the Umibōzu is said to have a large, round head, resembling the shaven heads of Buddhist monks. Alternatively they are demonic Yōkai (spectres) that appear to shipwreck victims and fishermen. They are believed to be drowned priests, and exhibit the shaven head and typically appears to be praying. It is usually reported as having a grey, cloud-like torso and serpentine limbs.
>According to one story, if angered, they ask that the crews provide a barrel that it proceeds to fill with sea water to drown them. To avoid this disastrous fate, it is necessary to give him a bottomless barrel.
>This folktale is likely related to another Japanese tradition, which says that the souls of people who have no one to look after their graves take refuge at sea.
>>87951970
> To avoid this disastrous fate, it is necessary to give him a bottomless barrel.
Seems like a giant monster like that would probably kill you anyway for tricking them.
>>87951703
The movie really could have used an extra 45 minutes or so.
>>87951998
That's the smaller version, that are drowned spirits. The larger ones pretty much just turns the boat/ship over.
>>87945934
The same can be asked of Ralph Fiennes always playing creepy old men trying to kill a child.
>>87951998
Depends. Some Yokai are bound by codes of honor or the like wherein they cannot seek retribution if tricked into doing something. Kappa have to bow if one bows to them, despite likely knowing it will stun/kill them because they need the water in their head-cup.
Makes me hope that Nioh game includes all these little tricks for the demons.
>>87945934
>draw it a girl
>call it a boy
why is this allowed
>>87952379
Because Japan.

I assumed the doofy personality is what'd he'd have been like with a peaceful life, without years of battle and the burden of leadership hardening him.
>>87952403
Femkappa da best.
I just watched the movie. 10/10, but also Regina Spektor's great.
>>87952447
>humanizing the yokai
Shit tastes desu.
>>87952440
Protip: there's no girls in this image.
Bi-do, the practice of homosexuality love between a man and a man who looks like a girl, was a privilege of the samurai.
>>87952505
>>Protip: there's no girls in this image.
>implying
girls can have feminine penises anon

>assplay
Nah brah nah.
>>87952505
Isnt that Wakashudo?
>>87952505
>>87952613
Nah, the samurai thought of it like Romans where it's not gay to put a dick in things, its only gay to get a dick in your own butt from another man.

Kudos to Charlize's performance. There was enough distinguishing her two roles that they honestly sounded like different voices.

It's like a doctor telling you "I'm sorry, it's cancer" when you've had a basketball sized growth on the side of your head for three months.

Every 30-45 minutes of animation takes the studio about a year to do.
>>87952974
These are always promotional items, not something the public can get their hands on. It's either given away as a limited prize or auctioned off for way more than any sane person would pay for footwear.
>>87955557
I wish I had won the ParaNorman ones on the Twitter contest. But I'm not a shoe collector or anything, I just liked ParaNorman and they looked neat.
Was trying to find pictures of people wearing them.

>>87950946
I'd be happy if it actually gets nominated, it deserves recognition with all the other films this year at the very least.Honestly, I wouldn't be mad if it loses to Moana or Zootopia. But my jimmies would be rustled if Finding Dory won, that movie doesn't deserve it at the all.
>>87954663
It was originally inspired by Asian culture when the Beatles were on shaky grounds. Plus, the song is about Eastern relativism, which works with the film's whole message.
>>87954663
It's almost like the movie's protagonist uses an instrument that is strikingly similar to a guitar.
>>87954663
Because it made me cry like a bitch.
>>87945934
It was okay, but felt really by the books. There was no build up to the adventure, the twists could be seen from a mile away, and the ending was a little cheesy. It felt like I was being led through a story rather than watching the story unfold naturally.
>>87967001
Yeah, writing is pretty weak. Now i understand why Coraline still the best Laika movie because it was just based on book. Looks like they have problems with that.
>>87947774
What's this from?
>>87954663
Because it made me stay to watch the credits twice the two times I saw the movie in the cinema.
HA HA!
TIME FOR MURDER THE MOVIE
>>87951362
I'd buy that for a dollar!
>>87947882
