Quickly, /co/, recommend me an omnibus that is still in print. Have old school ASM, the first Uncanny X-Men one, and the first Green Lantern one already. I shamelessly enjoy capes, Spidey being my fave even though I hate the recent ASM.

I'll try to get a pic of my small, but growing collection together.

It's a great book. It also comes with the Portal 2 comic and all TF2 comics up to the one with The Director.
It's too bad that newer TF2 comics don't lend themselves well to print. I would love to have a physical copy of the ongoing series when it finishes in 2026.

Very small collection of things I've bought over the years. Only very recently started seriously collecting comics. Doom Patrol, Godzilla in Hell and Hellboy Library are the ones new.

Mostly into manga desu. If anyone cares about seeing that collection ill post also.
>>
I'm interested in Morrison's Doom Patrol even though I've read very little DC. Is it something I can jump into with no prior knowledge?
>>
>>87962895

well damn, no wonder I hadn't seen a copy before. anything particularly special about it other than it just being a limited edition of some sort?

desu if its selling for that much on ebay i wouldn't even crack the plastic to take a look. lol
>>
>>87963470
yeah
>>
>>87963470
Morrison's run jumps write into issue 18 of the second Doom Patrol to make matters worse. Despite that I didn't have much trouble not understanding anything. A couple characters backstories can be understood quite easily despite being completely explained. He draws a lot of inspiration from outside of comics so its worth reading for something a little bit different than the usual. If you're on the fence however but still interested then I'd say go for it.

Let's try this again.

This is the first time I've actually had a shelf and thus the first time I've had any compulsion to own physical books. So far I've only been picking up a few favorites here and there that were relatively cheap. I may have a shelf now but I still lack the dosh to properly fill it.

at least Marvel keeps it relatively the same, and even so, the Marvel logo itself never really changed, only the colors and I can deal with that, but DC is a fucking OCD nightmare.

Dark Horse isnt any better, they fuck around with their spines on the regular.

actually when it really comes down to it for matching spines from the same series Image wins hands down.... I can't actually think of a series by them that didnt have matching spines all the way along given the same format for all the books.

Don't feel like making a new thread for this, so I thought I'd ask here. A friend of mine has shown interest in Storm, though they aren't a comic reader and I think only seen the more recent X-Men movies. I know they'd read it if I got it for them, which would be a better Storm buy, Uncanny X-Men omnibus vol. 1 or 2, or something else?
>>

I wouldnt get her an Omni, if she's not a regular comic reader she'll just leave it on the shelf get her whatever smaller tpb has storm and the morlocks
>>
>>87968740
that'd be the better option. if you just hand an omni to a non-comic reader to get into comics then they're taken aback by the size and just won't read it. people don't realize that it's a comic and not a regular book and they'll think "oh shit, War and Peace! I'd need a year to get through that."

The dangerous thing about current Marvel, especially X-Men, is that it may be nothing at all like the movie stuff, completely convoluted, out of proportion, loaded with preferences and may require you to know everything about the character(s) before even going past page 3.

What I've got in the past two months or so. Just got Fury Max today from that Amazon $10 off thing.

I kind this weird tiny pang of nostalgia looking at it. Back when it was coming out none of the groups were scanning the Punisher issue so someone here used their school's scanner or something and storytimed it, but the scan was in black and white because that's all he was able to do. So everybody desperate to read the issue just went along with it and enjoyed this fucked up bootleg.

The Deadpool Omnibus by Joe Kelly is pretty much the definitive run of the character. Before that there were a couple of mini series but the only two things to come from them is 1) dude went through weapon x, got his healing factor, he looks like chewed up gum and 2) he has a crush on Siryn.

>>
>>87976432
We should really have a proper list for that.
Generally watch the Animated series from the 90s and 00s. Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Batman Beyond is optional if you want to get up to date with the current shit, then Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Reading Batman (especially Year One, skip the Morrison run though, it's great but it's too advanced) and JLA (by Morrison) is probably the easiest way to get into DC, hands down.

Fifty-Two gets you a nice introduction into DC in general, especially for B- and C-List characters

Legion of Super-Heroes Vol 5 (the one starting in 2004) is the easiest way to get into Legion

Teen Titans - Year One for Teen Titans
Same for Green Arrow
Same for Batgirl
Superman - Secret Otigin for current Superman (since the New52 one died, this is the most recent origin story)

>>87979701
Indeed, but we may never get rid of it.
>>
>>87983155
Idk if I can get into them. Ever since i was a kid I've been into cartoon adaptations like spiderman TAS, batman TAS, static shock, etc. But any opportunity I've had to read the comics never interested me, even if the there are new characters or the universe is deeper. I just end up looking up the pictures and reading character profiles or a synopsis later. Like I said, I have never read a manga either, so I guess the medium isn't for me.

I just looked it up, the Legion Omnibus collects archives 1-3 but omits all Superboy issues (086, 089, 098, 117). That is pretty hardcore because two of them are required Legion reading. 089 introduces Mon-El and 098 Ultra Boy. The other two are skippable, but it still hurts me.

>>
>>87984072
Not baiting. I've heard it numerous times described as a graphic novel, but after looking it up i guess I am wrong since it has 12 issues. Point is isn't it lengthier then a typical comic? If a regular one doesn't hold my attention why would one as long as watchmen do so?
>>
>>87982558
>Jack Kirby's Kamandi Omnibus
shit, I own the two omnis already but will double dip if it is oversized
>>
>>87984214
>is it lengthier then a typical comic?
What does this even mean? It's something like 400 pages. I wouldn't consider it overly long.
>If a regular one doesn't hold my attention why would one as long as watchmen do so?
Because it's good. The length is irrelevant. It's got some pieces of fluff you might not be interested in reading in it but the story itself will keep you hooked if you haven't already decided you're not going to pay attention to it because it's a comic book and therefore has to suck because you decided they do.
Watchmen is really highly acclaimed for reason, anon. It's not an unreasonable amount of material to read through, especially if you end up liking it, which most people do.
>>

I've seen people say that Superboy and The Legion collection coming out has some more stuff in it that's not in the description so this might be a similar case
>>
>>87984442
What you need to understand is that most comics are ongoing series that last forever with hundreds and thousands of issues, the "short" comics you're thinking about just collect a couple of issues of those. Watchmen is the whole thing though.
>>
>>87984961
>last forever
All the more reason to just read a synopsis. But I'll try to push through the watchmen if I read it since it is conclusive.
>>
>>87984916
that'd be cool, but where did they get that info from? the only stuff that needs collecting from the time that Superboy & the LoSH collects is the Lightning Lad + Saturn Girl wedding special really, and since people constantly demand it to be collected I can only guess that wishful thinking turned to "it's really in it guys!"

At this point, yes. So many movies are just slightly altered versions of the same formula with all the reused tropes. I'd recommend non Justice League related stuff to start, things that are more self contained so you dont really need to know or care what batman and the flash are up to at that moment or whatever.

The Question
Resurrection Man by Abnett
Starman
Hitman
Jonah Hex/All Star Western
Gotham Central

thats all i can think of at the moment without going into Vertigo stuff, might be able to think of more if i didnt just take an after breakfast bong hit

Actually the new Supergirl comic is barely readable either because they introduced Cat Grant the way she is in the tv show and put her in the book as Supergirl's boss (in her Danvers persona) and that character is so fucking annoying, obnoxious and insufferable I'm thinking of dropping it already.

I know the struggle anon. I've spent a shit ton of money this year but those Uncanny X-men omnibuses look too damn tempting, and now I remembered again that I need to start collecting Akira eventually. Funny enough I discovered Akira through my library because they had the entire collection.
You will never see drawn titties in a manga for the first time ever again
You will never have your 12 year old mind repeatedly fucking blown by how good the story gets with each consecutive volume
You will never get the whole series from the library again because some faggot lost/damaged multiple volumes
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I was a 12 year old who had never read manga before and randomly stumbled upon it
Thanks for reading my blogpost

>>87998880
Thanks and I did, it was pretty good. I actually have some shit coming in from midtown as we speak. But like I said before now if I want to get only 1 comic a month I have to get fucked by shipping so I'm basically paying $7-$9 for 1 comic. So I'm either going to have to find some more comics to buy monthy so I don't feel like I'm getting that fucked or wait 3-4 months and buy those 3-4 issues all at once and hope none of them are sold out. Sadly Gwenpool 2-4 is sold out at midtown so I'm pretty fugged there
>>
>>87999038
What way could they possibly see it? What kind of business owner can afford to ape out at customers for doing nothing?
>>
>>87999060
I assume it costs them at least some sort of money to order a comic so I guess they might have lost money somehow because I never bought it.
>>
>>87999089
So you were supposed to magically know it was there without being informed? No matter how anxious you are about this, based on the information you've given there's nothing you can be blamed for.
>>
>>87998379
Slantastic.
>>
>>87999111
I know what you're saying but the way the guy was on the message he sounded really pissed so I'm guessing the shop owner is pissed. Maybe something didn't communicate right over there and he told someone to call me when it came in and they never called me? Or he didn't even do that and never called me in the first place? I'm getting a slight bit more courage to go there now thanks to you guys but it's still nerve wracking.
>>
>>87999089
>>87999185

>I assume it costs them at least some sort of money to order a comic
It costs any business some sort of money to receive goods, which they make back (and then some) from customers rebuying them. So yes, it's generally poor form to request a store to order something for you and never buy it.

But it's not your fault if they never told you it came in. They most likely assumed you were interested in more than one title, and would therefore be in the shop more than once a month so you could be informed in person. Just tell them your situation and that should clear everything up. Unless they really are that unreasonable. Then you're screwed.
>>
>>87999185
1. You've done nothing wrong
2. Getting yelled at by dumb people doesn't hurt you
3. If it's that bad you can take your business elsewhere
>>
>>87999185

If they're rude to you then fuck 'em, they deserve to lose the customer. I work retail and I've dealt with shit customers but you did nothing wrong. On the other hand, I've worked with plenty of assholes that treat customers unfairly or don't do their job.

Do you know how many times a month I have a customer come in asking me why they never got notified of an order they placed, or they come in and it hasn't been completed?

It's not like you scheduled a certain time that you'd be back there. Even if you did, and then didn't show up, it's on them to call you and ask you about it/let you know it's in. Nothing says they have to be rude.

>>
>>88000997
Like >>88001035 said, I'd start with Dark Phoenix Saga because that's where Shadowcat is introduced and after that arc finishes she joins the X-Men (Dazzler also appears in that arc but she doesn't come back for a while), and if you keep reading from there you'll eventually get to Uncanny X-Men 171, where Rogue starts appearing more with her 90s cartoon Carol Danvers powers, and if you continue from there Dazzler will be joining the team for a while in Uncanny X-Men 214.

You can also check out Excalibur, which has Shadowcat as one of the main characters, at least for the first half or so of that series.

Boom Boom is a recurring B character starting in X-Factor 12, until she moves over to New Mutants in 76, and after 100 the book transfers to X-Force 1, where she's part of the initial team for a while.

As you might tell, these are their early appearances where they aren't too bogged down with backstory to get lost in, so there may be better first time reader stories that I'm not really aware of. I don't really have a solid answer for Jubilee.
>>
>>87999038
you didn't make any kind of contract with them, no one forces you to pick it up asap. just say you didn't have the time and were somewhere on business out of town if it really bothers you and only if they really ask or look at you funny.
seriously no one gives a fuck if you pick it up late.
I had some similar thing at a local newspaper stand, regularly bought the kicker (football) magazine there but it was sold out regularly as well so I asked them to keep one for me since I came there every monday and thursday (release dates). they did, but I lost interest in buying it shortly after and had no other reason to show up there any more until a few months later. woman at the counter just asked if I still wanted kicker magazines, I said no, done.
it's really not that much of a problem. just behave unsuspicious, make eye-contact as if you were the boss (yeah that may sound funny to you I guess, if you really are on the spectrum) and they won't bother you about it, but that's how it works.
>>
>>88001561
I don't really care about backstory, I think it's pretty easy to jump into comics regardless of continuity
I like to jump in on the random storytimes here for like an issue or two without any context

is Wood's X-Men good? it seems like it has a cool team

Considering how every single LoSH archive is OOP while most other archives aren't should give them a hint but DC somehow can't take it.
It boogles my mind how they aren't reprinting their old shit regularly. One just has to check amazon and see how 3/4 of their back catalog is OOP and marketplace vendors are asking for moon prices. At that point they should realize that there is a demand and that they should reprint. Same with omnis, it's a save sell. Instead they keep Identity Crisis in print.

Looks like there's 7 volumes released. The stories inside aren't in the production order, because Tezuka and his editors thought this was a better order. This is the first Tezuka work I've picked up (and may not get the other volumes), is there anything else by him I should consider?

Nice shelves. As far as X-Statix, I borrowed a copy from a friend and I didn't think it was that good. I think most people have a copy because at a certain point it was dirt cheap. If you want good Xmen you can't go wrong with Claremonts Uncanny Xmen. Morrison's New Xmen is a personal favorite of mine.

Oh for sure. Astro Boy is decently enjoyable shonen fare, but IMO Tezuka was at his apex when competing with the adult's drama gekiga movement.

The best of those are the Vertical Inc. collections of Ode To Kirihito, MW and Apollo's Song. They also printed his religious epic Buddha, and illegal doctor serial Black Jack that's mostly short stories.

Digital Manga Publishing are the new guys on the Tezuka front and for the most part have Kickstarted their translations, but none of it comes close to Vertical's catalogue in terms of scope, ambition and thematic maturity. They're mostly focused on his lesser known early shonen work, cancelled series and anthologies too so it feels like scraps by comparison

Pic related is my slowly growing Tezuka shelf

I work at comic book shop if the person took the order he should've made it official in the diamond comic suite. He can look at the website if it's available or not. There are times that a book doesn't come in or get shorten by the diamond. However, if it did come in, he should of left you a message about it coming in. The person that took the order didn't do his job. At our store, we will usually follow up a few times but if we dont reach the person we will put out the item since we still have to make the money. As for getting earlier books like gwenpool. The best thing you can do was make a subscription so you don't miss out. There are time when items do go out of print. A lot of women driven marvel books go out of print fast. I can see how the Manager was mad but it shouldn't be you fault. He should corrected his lazy worker.

>>88025155
DC omni's don't sell out that quickly, or really at all unless they're really early ones like the Kirby stuff. The Flash Omni will be around for a while. The only reason Marvel's omni's sell out so fast is they do the variant cover gimmick, so people try to snatch them up quickly to resell on ebay.
>>

yeah but prices will go up. I can still get it for €60 right now which is all right all things considered.
I could order it from IST but there's always the risk of customs picking it up and having me pay extra money for it, besides the shipping fees are horrendous as well and I'd have to order a boatload of books to make it worth it and also it won't arrive before christmas, hell, it won't arrive this year any more.
So yeah, right now and 60€ it is.

They have a lot at B&N, where as my two locals don't carry many trades because they're "filthy, dirty habits that carry no value :^)". So, I've kind of been buying exclusively from B&N as of late; not only do they have a huge selection of trades, they can order most things; I just had them order Robin Vol. 1-3, Dixon's run that they're reprinting, and a few other bits and bobs here and there. I just wish they'd finish Ostrander's Spectre. I'm also hoping since Batman Adventures and Batman & Robin Adventures are both being reprinted now, we may see them reprint the original Batman Beyond comic that accompanied the show.

>>88023058
If you like iZombie and Grant Morrison, you'll like X-Statix. The fact that you're not already "an X-Men fan" will help a lot too. It's a self-contained story about fame and consequences, with an "it's x-men/mutants so it's also about being a weirdo" foundation. All of the main characters are introduced *in* the run, and with the exception of Doop, none of the characters have been used significantly outside of X-Statix.

Anyone saying "get claremont instead" has different priorities. If you're looking to "get in to the X-Men," then start with Claremont. If you're looking for more Allred and you're open to an early-00's version of "superheros as reality tv stars," go for X-Statix.

The first arc was cool

I enjoy his OML and Thanos is off to a good start

German Amazon still lists it as available without showing any "only x available" message and it's €52.49 so I'd wager it's just IST not having it any more. Maybe they'll get a new batch in.
What price was it listed as?

amazon.co.uk has it listed as out of stock, amazon.com has it in stock, amazon.fr lists it as only 8 more available...

I was just at Strand Bookstore. They has plenty as did the B&N 4 blocks away. I wasn't allowed to go into Forbidden Planet, they were closing early it seemed. Not that I needed to buy anything else today.

Still available at tfaw.com for $44.99. Hurry up if you want it. I wish I had money.
>>
>>88047844
Luckily I ordered it locally for $50 AND free shipping
>>
>>88047965
I would buy it for 50 bucks, too, but I have to pay another 25-30 for the international shipping, so I pass
>>
>>88048203
yeah
I checked bookdepository since they have free shipping, but they are selling it for $70
>>
>>88048203
check your local amazon of course, then look around for comic shops from your country that have online shops. where are you from anyway?
if you're in europe, try
http://www.cheap-comics.com/moebius-library-world-edena-p-19463.html

€45.99, but additional shipping fees apply etc. so if you buy, buy big, they have a few really good offers though, just take a look around the site (IF you are in europe).

Is DC reprinted 52 again or was that just an old Vol. 1 I saw at B&N?
>>
>>88049748
Do you mean the weekly comic or are you talking about New 52? in the former case, why would they just reprint 1 volume and not the rest?
>>
>>88049748
Vol 2 comes out in like a month
>>
>>88049824
52, the actual weekly comic, not any N52 stuff. And idk, didn't get a chance to really take a look, but I thought it was odd that 52 was back on shelves, but could see DC doing a reprint of it.

>>88049847
So, it's a reprint?
>>
>>88049855
Yeah, it is
>>
Why should I go for trades over floppies when trades rarely collect an entire run, especially for Big 2? It's always like issue 12-15, 17-19, and that one special issue!

Shits annoying.
>>
>>88050788
Get what you want.
>>
>>88050788
They almost always collect everything. In your example #16 might be collected in a later volume.

R8 or h8.
I haven't bought a new book in a long time.

Looks like these books have been read many times. Kudos for that.

My Christmas shopping list:

Sandman 6-10
Hellblazer 6
Hellboy Library Edition 1
Punisher Max Complete Collection 3 and 4
Gundam Origin 4
The Killing Joke
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
Kingdom Come
Omega Men

Some entry level shit there, but I figured I ought to actually own that stuff.

>Punisher Max Complete Collection 3 and 4

I am wondering, will they reprint the Ennis Punisher omnibus when that netflix show comes out? We need some Punisher omni. All previous ones are out of print
>>
>>88052252
You'd think they would, people would buy it even without the show.
>>
>>88052252
I think this IS the reprint already since they'd have to create another Omnibus for the whole run of it. the current omni just collects about half of it.
>>
>>88052575
Yeah, seems so. I like those tpbs but this run deserves an omnibus. Still hope they will make some oversize hardcover of some Punisher series, maybe War Journal. Eh.
>>
>>88046830
I like it but it's a bit decompressed
