>It became ""quirky"" and ""fun"" rather than story based with humorous elements as the pilot implied

I can't believe this got 872,000 bucks for its production.

This actually REALLY puts things into perspective for me. That money could have been used to build shelters or provide food to starving children, yet it brought THIS into the world.

>>
>>87934847
GKIDS movies have very limited releases. Almost nobody watches them other than their own niche.

Illumination/Blue Skyshit does hugely in places like India and Latin America because they're pretty much the only animated films distributed there and the standards are so low the kids probably watch finger family videos.
>>
>>87935217
>>87935217
>finger family
do i want to know?
latin america is weird, they seem to have shitty standards and be happy to enjoy bootlegs, but on the other hand historically theyve had tons of good shit from america and japan running there all the time. sometimes reeally great anime we never get, and (until recently) with fewer edits

but yeah india.. their online "entertainment" is so bad it's confusing.. why would those bizarre flash cartoons be all indian kids have to look at? if they have the internet they have the whole internet.
>>
>>87934847
Secret of Kells gross was $3,582,797.

What are you on about? That's pretty damn good for a niche animated film.
>>
>>87935549
that's still under half of its budget
>>
>>87934190
Got the rug pulled out from under them by youtube changing their payment algorithm. Suddenly they've got no budget, and so the series will look worse and take longer to come out because they can't hire a full staff.

Bravest Warriors had a pretty good update schedule before youtube fucked over animators.
>>
>>87935888
funny thing is, of all the shitty things youtube has done, really this one isnt an example of them being shitty.. because the shitty thing was offering so much money in the first place, without putting safeguards in place against people doing linkbait to exploit it.. it created an artificial bubble which we're still frowning about the popping of.
>>
>>87934230
This. The pilot looked too much like Adventure Time/Bravest Warriors shit.
>>
>>87935490
In the case of Chile I haven't noticed the presence of bootleg shows or movies, kids generally love CG films but there's barely any advertisement for other kind of animated films (with the exception of Kubo). If you want to see different animation you have to go to festivals which don't get a lot of publicity outside of the city where they happen.

Years ago there used to be a lot of anime on public access TV (we once had Akira on prime time), but nowadays we only get CN or Nick shows.

>>
>>87941269
I wish there was more discussion of art styles instead of graphics types. As far as I'm concerned, Iron Giant and Incredibles are exactly the same. the cg aspect is irrelevant. they're both ugly.
the reason I liked the princess and the frog is that it looked like classic disney art, instead of the weird directions they had gone in hercules, pocahontas, emperor's new groove, etc. and I liked Tangled for the same reason
Frozen on the other hand seems to be going really weird and deformed again, and that seems to be the trend at the moment.. weirdly angled eyes and tiny low noses and mouths. halfway to Dreamworks but still not quite that bad.. good god Dreamworks has oogly art.
>>
>>87940559
>making claims on a woman being owner of a body figure closer to that of an inflated deformed cucumber automatically equates to being low test
there was a time where people had balls between their legs large enough to let such shitposting slide by
>>
>>87941429
to be honest, that kind of sounds superficial, and me saying that is hypocrite because i talk like i prefer 2d movies. but we have to admit there is just so much of CGI, that even if that is profitable, it s fuckin exhausting to see in these days. The ice age movies are the best example.
>>
>>87934301
The series version looks like she has Downs and severe encephalitis. Not even memeing, it's objectively poor and easily misreadable cues in the design and shape language genuinely giving me that impression.

The pilot version at least looked like a decently-stylised take on a cute, somewhat homely 20-something woman.
>>
>>87942716
yeah but the aesthetic problems with ice age are all in the designs. they'd be just as ugly in 2d.. and indeed, a lot of cartoons use that same aesthetic.

>>
>the first episode (not the pilot) came out 2 years ago
>there's only been 5 episodes released since then

>>
>>87950423
nat isn't becky sugar. she's just a kooky little girl who wants to have fun and play with cartoons
she randomly got on /co/ one day and asked what a female finn would be called, and drew her for us. then refined the design a bit when it didnt look different enough from finn. then this went into the show

then she drew comics about how the designs for cake came by with changed eyes that she didn't like, and she bitched about fixing them, and then when they still weren't the right color she felt too guilty to correct them a second time.
this woman is fully aware of her foibles and is under no circumstances trying to go muh-anything on anyone. she's just a kid. she's just a female equivalent of pen ward. kids who never grew up but got to achieve the dreams that kids for decades have wanted.. then got crushed under the pressure and the reality of it all.
>>
>>87950464
even better, they're all a single digit number of minutes long
it's pretty damn disappointing, but what /co/ never seems to keep in perspective is that disappointment is proof that they're doing something right, otherwise you wouldn't have felt anything, disappointment or otherwise. it's like the pain of loss reminding you of how great what you had was.. it's a tribute.
>>
>>87950811
I'm not sure if I agree with that logic... but then, I was never someone who was looking forward to this.
About the only thing I've seen outside of the pilot episode (which I thought was terrible) was a 20? minute "behind the scenes" thing where it was just a complete hipster convention. If the staff hasn't changed since then, it doesn't surprise me at all that there's been shit all progress in two years.

Not surprising Miyazaki is huge with normalfags and his films cater to an acceptal audience.

Wouldn't surprise me if someone at Frederator told Natasha to keep the art as simple as possible and she opted for a Miyazaki look because if Easterners think all animation is Disney then Westerners sure as hell must think all animation is Ghibli.

>>87949932
Considering she like anime and all, I thought she'd opt for a more stylized shoujo aesthetic and not budget Miyazaki. She did list Rumiko Takahashi as her influence.

When things get more efficient, you get two options:

>We can reinvest these savings to get better quality.

I think natasha allegri is a weirdo. Borderline autistic. The new eps are done, but, who cares at this point, nobody wants the weeb adventures of girl clarence. The creator had good ideas but wasn't a good enough writer to make it work for a full fledged series.
>>
>>87964920

Because by choosing to cut budgets for the same returns, they have raised their expectations of what acceptable ROI is.

That said, the biggest cost in animation has always been in manpower, not equipment. But that's not our problem because we outsource almost everything. Any efficiencies that are created in animation are sucked by the middle men in the process. Any real budget increases are eaten away producers, writers, and voice actors on our end.
>>
>>87934444
CGI is definitely more profitable. A model only has to be made once and built on from there for all the movies in a franchise. 2D Animation is done from the ground up. The only time CGI can fuck you over is when the system you use to make the models costs more than it would have cost to make koreans animators in a sweatshop make your film, and you make a shitty gross in the hundreds of thousands range or less like Kellis.

When did it become fashionable for women to wear those granny-panty looking shorts and skirts that ride up to their ribcage? Is it just fat girls trying to look thin? Because it doesn't work. It always looks awful.

Those pants weren't made for fat girls. Part of their draw is that they are so ugly and unflattering that the only people who can pull then off are young, reasonably thin/fit women.

Every generation mines ideas from the decade before they were born so all the 90s kids are taking fashion from the 80s.

Also once upon a time pants were meant to be worn on your waist, not the hips. I think it was tail end of the 90s that fashion changed to hip hugging and low riders.
>>
>>87934190
They added forty pounds and an extra chromosome.
>>
>>87974493
>once upon a time pants were meant to be worn on your waist, not the hips
I think the unisexing of clothing is what changed that. on men, the waist IS the hips. Even so, a lot of womens' clothing treats the hips like a waist going way back, mainly superheroes, belly dancers, that kinda shit.
>>
>>87974675
I also attribute it to the desirability of the v-cut these days on both men and women.
>>
I'm watching the whole series for the first time right now. Pilot was okay. Episode 1 was cringe but watchable. Episode 2 was salvageable, mostly because of Bee's human friends and that they acknowledge she's retarded. I'm on episode 3 now. When she spilled food on her cat onesie and started trying to lick it off, I actually felt sad. Bee was annoying in the pilot but now she is literally mentally challenged and I can't tell if I'm supposed to find it cute or disturbing. I certainly don't find it cute at all.

Bee and Pupptcat could be an interesting take on how a mentally handicapped person would handle being a magical girl but I don't think this is what the creator intended.

>>

it also can cost more if the renders become too demanding. more profitable no doubt, but there's a lot of ways everything can go to shit
>>
>>87934444

CGI is more profitable despite the cost, because they also have much higher grosses on average.

Past a certain amount of money, what really gets investments are things that are predictable. 3D family animation are predictable, as are Marvel films. Doing lower cost 2D animation now would be like playing penny stocks. There's a huge upside if you pick the winner, but most of your choices will be losers.

To think about it another way, the outlay required for a 3D CGI film that is competitive with Disney ($60~80 million production budget and $20~40 million marketing is the sweet spot) effectively forces the film to be family friendly. It has to go after the broader market. To take a real risk like Sausage Party, the budget was pushed down to $20 million, with a lot of animators getting screwed hard in the process in exchange for creative freedom. So having a lower budget can be a mixed blessing.

>tfw Bee had nothing to do with the space princess Puppycat fell in love with and wasn't actually rich this whole time but only in a space currency that isn't worth jack shit on Earth
>tfw we don't learn anything new about Puppycat at all
>tfw Sticky (aka, Cardamon's dog/the golden dog shown in some of Natasha's leaks) didn't turn out to be a disguised space cop trying to capture Puppycat and get him back to serve his punishment for his crimes both as an outlaw and for romancing the space princess
>tfw Sticky also didn't turn out to be the space princess who was transformed into a cute pet just like Puppycat and was going to try to get back together with him, leaving him to decide if he should accept or break it off once and for all
>tfw Bee never went to space to save Puppycat and meet him as his true self
>tfw there was no parallel of Bee and Deckard to Puppycat and his princess if they wanted to go that direction
>tfw Bee wasn't just a normal human 21 year-old down on her luck that had something magical change her dull and miserable life
>mfw instead she was just a shitty useless robot and the ribbon blood in the pilot was actual ribbons inside of her and not some sort of psychadelic methapor for self harm

And I would've gladly tolerated the shitty redesigns and bad animation if the plot had been meaningful in any way. What a fucking waste of 3 years. I guess we still have the pilot to treasure as what could've been.

on a man it is, while on a woman the waist is at navel level. this causes understandable confusion, as there's nothing on a man at navel level that is any different from 5 inches above or below that level. a man's torso is just straight. the only waist is the saddling of the hips

You were told days ago that absolutely nothing was resolved at all with the new episodes. Nothing was explained and the story just fell apart.

So they decided to go with the
>Totally interpretive ending, it's up to the viewer to decide what it all means because we cannot be bothered to keep to a narrative at all
>ooooohhhh deep meaningful metaphors that you should figure out and we will say yes that's right if we like it enough
>>
>>87980678
Sort of agree with Secret of Kells, but not so much Song of the Sea. It has an actual narrative that continues through the film.

But I do agree that there is a balancing act between making something look beautiful and expressive with the creators showing off their capacity for artistic interpretation....and making an entertaining fucking movie that people generally want to watch.

A lot of creators get way to hung up on their want to make something super detailed and artistic looking and spend way too much time on colors and shapes while forgetting that they are supposed to be telling a story. Yea pretty colors are cool and all but if it goes on for half an hour and the viewer has no fucking clue what they are looking at then they are probably going to quit watching or at least not bother watching again.

>>
>>87984319
uhhh no.. a man's torso is roughly shaped like a toilet paper tube that's been compressed slightly
if he's in good shape his torso widens slightly at the ribcage, but it doesn't widen as you go down unless you have pronounced hip-saddling, and then only just there
a waist is a place where you either narrow, or a place before you widen. the closest to narrowing most men get is the space below the top of the pelvis

That's actually not too unrealistic. When someone frequently skips meals or goes without eating, and then binges [AKA payday] they're known to gain weight quickly because your body will save all of the weight it can, since it doesn't know when it will get to eat again.

Also a sexy Travolta sometimes.

However, you're semi wrong. If you notice, the "break the binary" artists have their feet in third wave feminism ideology.

It was penned by a third wave feminist herself that the third wave originated from "grrrl power", punk cliches of the 90s, and counterculture itself, and we're seeing that with fans of shows.

The neon hair, the shitty hair, homemade deathhawks(I called one girl David Bowie meets lawnmower), bad taste in how clothes work....you get the gist.

The art pulls from the generation before birth, but the fans pull from the generation of the artist, born before them. The artist is born in the 90s, the fan in the 2000s, both reminiscence about "the good old days"

Not him but look at what happens to the AVGN movie. It became less a labor of love and more an obligation just to get it out to the backers.

What's more there's the issue that there's no risk on behalf of the creator so long as he gets it out they fulfill all their obligations. It causes them to half ass things

People often complain about producers and the bottom line limiting creativity but at the opposite extreme they're often he only thing keeping the ship together

There's a subtle coloration on the nose that artists exaggerate for visual flair. It's more prominent on people who are cold and sometimes the elderly. It's common in folk art and pop culture inspired by it, like Raggedy Ann and Animal Crossing villagers. They mean it to be cute/unique (yes, unique like all the other Tumblr users, it's still a minority in general and it's most common among inexperienced younger artists who throw a ton of stylization at the wall to see what sticks)
