What was the consensus on this movie?
>>
Shit.
>>
Crap
>>
Poopy
>>
What's happening to Pixar?

They came from great CG animations with solid characters and stories to bland sequels.
>>
>>87931673
The Cars movies pay for themselves whether the critics/audiences like them or not

but I really don't understand the decision making behind something like Monsters U
>>
>>87931627
boring and really bad, people will defend it because muh pixar but it was below average.
>>
>>87931627
Environment porn with a bland story.
>>
>>87931627
Gorgeous backgrounds and environmental effects.
Unfitting and far too cartoony styles of the characters in contrast to the other style going on around it. No memorable characters or events, the story was just there.

Felt more like a tech demo to demonstrate neat weather effects.
>>
>>87931673
It was all Steve Jobs.
>>
>>87931704
Obviously people loved Monsters Inc. The problem was the college campus setting is overused even with a Monster stamp on it. Plus the meeting of Sully and Mike wasn't that compelling in the end
>>
>>87931673
Cars
>>
>>87931767
You could tell other stories in that world with different characters, but they didn't do that.
>>
>>87931627
Lion King and Ice Age 1 had a baby. That's the plot in a nutshell.

>>87931746
>Felt more like a tech demo to demonstrate neat weather effects.
This.

>>87931673
This movie and possibly Brave are the only bad marks Pixar has done in my eyes. I thought the first Cars movie was alright and I at least enjoyed Cars 2 more than Good Dinosaur.
>>
>>87931704

Monsters U wasn't bad, the fuck?

Dated, sure, but far from bad.
>>
>>87931627
Passable but forgettable.
>>
>>87932923
but Brave was good.
not great, but good
>>
>>87931704
Monsters U was great and everyone that has ever been to college can relate to Mike and Sully's experiences
also it has a great ending message
definitely a more tolerable sequel than fucking Finding Dory
>>
People only complain about the dinosaurs looking ugly, but the real problem was the god-awful pacing. There was a good movie in there, but it was bogged down by not knowing what the fuck it wanted to be. It was constantly rushing through important scenes, dragging out pointless scenes, and just not feeling very cohesive. You could tell that this movie changed hands too many times.
>>
>>87931627
This movie is the Tales From Earthsea of Pixar.
>>
>>87933282
This. Finding Dory is down there with Cars 2 and Good Dinosaur and I don't see as many people giving it shit.
>>
>>87931627
Shit
>>
>>87933326
This is a gross exaggeration. As bad as Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory were, Cars 2 was really, really awful.
>>
>>87933319
>Implying Studio Ghibli has the same pedigree as Pixar had when the only draw there was Miyazaki Sr.'s movies and nobody cares about anything else
>>
>>87933354
Studio Ghibli > Pixar though
>>
>>87933354
>nobody
Everyone isn't you.
>>
>>87933354
Spot on. When people say they're "Ghibli Fans" they really mean "Miyazaki Fans". I'm not saying that Miyazaki's works are bad, like, at all, but I don't see very many people care about shit like The Cat Returns. Seriously, Who the fuck cares about The Cat Returns?
>>
>>87933326
>>87933282

but finding Dory was good
>>
>>87933509
A lot of people? And most Ghibli normies don't even call it Ghibli, they just say they're Miyazaki fans. I love Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, My Neighbors The Yamadas, etc. Their movies aren't all mega hits, like Whisper of the Heart for example which was written (though not directed) by Miyazaki. Most Ghibli casual fans haven't seen it from my experience. Regardless all of their movies have solid fanbases, more than most animated films that weren't made by Disney, Pixar, or DreamWorks.

Really says a lot when this is the only place pushing that Finding Dory was bad. Not sure if its just butthurt furfags from Zootopia or Moanafags being butthurt that nobody gives a shit about it.
>>
>>87933616
It's not bad, its just not that memorable. I'd gladly rewatch those other two movies before finding dory
>>
>>87933570
I'm not saying that every single non-Myazaki Ghibli film is bad, I'm just saying that the average person who likes something like Kiki's Delivery Service and/or Ponyo probably wouldn't like, say, Pom Poko.
>>
>>87933616
Moana literally just came out days ago and it's getting unanimously positive feedback so no we aren't butthurt. I don't think people expected this movie to be the new Frozen or to beat Finding Dory. I half expected the movie to be awful actually but was pleasantly surprised.

Wait why am I even indulging this? Maybe some people just don't like Finding Dory and they're entitled to their opinions. You're just trying to make more in-fighting for no reason bye.
>>
>>87931673
First, they got high off their own accolades. Resting on your laurels is never a good thing to do creatively.
Second, two many of their recent movies have either been cash grabs or tech demos.
>>
>>87933664
>Moana literally just came out days ago and it's getting unanimously positive feedback
So did Finding Dory
>>87933648
Moana and Zootopia weren't memorable at all so I'm just gonna chop it down to you being contrarian
>>
>>87933651
Big name animation studios always have movies that are more well known and popular than others. Not all domain film how're are autistic like us, do they usually only make time to see movies that are heavily advertised and hyped up.
>>
>>87933664
>and it's getting unanimously positive feedback
So did Big Hero 6 and look how many people remember that.
>>
>>87933677
Troll and/or false flagger. You must be bored.
>>
>>87933695
>unironically insisting people don't remember BH6
I didn't even care for that movie much, but you are pretending to be retarded.
>>
>>87933354
>>87933509
>>87933570
>>87933651
>>87933687
This isn't fucking rocket science. The bulk of Pixar's staff went over to Disney are we going to start calling Disney movies Pixar now? .
>>
>>87931627
If Cars 2 didn't exist, it would be the worst Pixar movie.
>>
The Good Dinosaur was cute but very forgettable. One of the most forgettable cartoons I've ever seen. It was beautiful though, visuals wise. Taking Bob Peterson off of it was probably a bad idea.

>>87931704
$$$

>>87932923
Brave and Good Dinosaur were lame but cute. Cars 2 was fucking cool though. It's not the best Pixar film but definitely a cool spy movie.

>>87933282
>>87933616

And Monster's U was almost as good as the first.

Zootopia, Finding Dory, and Moana are evidence that American animation is still alive. Good stuff.
>>
>>87933509
Nigga, you talking shit about the Cat Returns?
>>
>>87931673
>What's happening to Pixar?
>They came from great CG animations with solid characters and stories
So nothing has changed. People tend to put more emphasis on their mediocre work more so than their good work nowadays is all. And generally bash anything that isn't an original concept yet ironically people hated The Good Dinosaur and loved Finding Dory. Maybe /co/ is just filled with hipsters?
>>
>>87933832
What? No! I love the Cat Returns. It's my second favorite Ghibli film! My first favorite is Castle In The Sky, but The Cat Returns is a close second.
>>
>>87931627
I liked the western feel and that it had Sam Elliott...
Though they could have had someone say "somebody poisoned the watering hole"
But it was well, mediocre.
>>
>>87931704
Monsters U was pretty good. I did like that it was a sort of counterpart to the first; making it about Mike instead of Sulley was a great decision.
>>
>>87931627
So bad a character on The Big Bang Theory said it changed their life.
>>
>>87933844
>maybe /co/ is just filled with hipsters
>maybe
>>
>>87931627

It existed
>>
How do you fuck up a dinosaur movie so badly? Also, holy shit fuck the bosession with herbivore protagonists.
>>
>>87933232
>3 years old
>Dated
Yeah i think that's a pretty big problem.
>>
>>87931704
Monsters U was good, fuck you.
>>
>>87931704
I know this probably has been said before, but I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that it was going to be a prequel instead of directly follow the events of the first one. Who thought that was a good idea?
>>
>>87931704
nostalgia bait
after the success of Toy Story 3 they decided to cash in on nostalgia even more, and now that Finding Dory made bank you're only gonna see more and more and more!

You are wrong, madam. When Marnie was There is Ghibli's best movie.
>>
>>87939911
It's not even top 10 Ghibli films.
>>
>>87933232
It was lame. Not sure how it's dated though.
>>
>>87931627
not as good as it looks but better than everyone says.
>>
>>87933282
And everyone who's watched any other movie set in college knows MU was mostly a rehash of things done better before it.
>>
Pretty dumb. To think we have gone from Band Before Time to this.
>>
>>87933844
Inside out was also meh and it doesn't even look good.
>>
>>87935895
The Big Bang Theory is underrated.
>>
>>87940045
i liked inside out.
>>
>>87940045
>>87940062
it was missing something, the whole movie felt like it was being rushed along to the ending.
>>
>>87940046
*overrated

FTFY. Season 1 was pretty entertaining, it mocked nerd stereotypes while also making pop culture references both members of the "nerd" and "normal" cliques would understand, and had the main 4 geeking out over things that both parties could also laugh at. It didn't initially feel demeaning to nerdy people because it made them sympathetic characters and didn't just depict them as toy loving shut-ins (all 4 were more successful than Penny financially, even with Howard living with his mother that was less a money issue and more a connection issue). After that though, it became less "let's try to humanize these commonly mocked people who make contributions to society while having a good laugh at both parties' expense" to "LAUGH AT THE NERDS!"
>>
>>87931627
>Always wanted Pixar to do something with dinosaurs
>Get this
>>
>>87931627
too uninteresting to even try watching. been sitting on my harddrive since the bluray came out.. looks like a boring 'i found a pet/friend im scared of but then we become friends because we work together or some shit' movie.
>>
>>87940098
The message was so simple that it feels odd they made a movie out of it. Would be ok for a 20 minute cartoon tho.
>>
>>87933354
Hey now don't undersell Takahata, stuff like Grave of the Fireflies gave Ghibli credibility.

This pretty much hits all the points I would have made.

I don't think it can be stressed enough just how bland all of the movie aside from the technical aspects were: the characters, the plot, the designs, literally EVERYTHING is forgettable.

With two exceptions: the first is how fucking breathtaking the scenery and (esp) the WATER is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6Td12fZHLg

And the second is how jarring the Uncanny Valley is ANY TIME ONE OF THE CHARACTERS STEPS INTO FRAME!
>>
>>87940160
It did feel like stretched-out short.

When did Pixar peak?
>>
>>87940399
Either Wall-e or Incredibles, with Up being the beginning of the decline.

As in Up was still good, but it ever since then it went down hill.
>>
It was a strong story with visuals that really don't hold up to Pixars name. The main dino and his family looked stupid and out of place, being very rounded and silly looking while every other dino had angular designs.
>>
>>87940463
But its visuals are much better than its lame run of the mill story.
>>
>>87940399
from between 07-09 depending on your taste
>>
>>87931627
Should have been called "The Pussiest Dinosaur"
>>
John Lassester has a hard-on for 3D animation and is using his pull at Disney to not get hand-drawn projects greenlit.
>>
>>87931627
boring
>>
>>87940098
I know what you mean. The problem with inside out is that there's never really a sense of danger. It's like yeah she's gonna run away but who gives a shit. The Moana short was much better
>>
>>87933249
Brace was shit, deal with it.
>>
>>87931673
In 2011 John Lasseter was given special permission to handpick the best of the Pixar crew and move them over to Disney, where they made movies such as Wreck-It Ralph and Zootopia.

This should be obvious but some people just don't watch the credits I guess.
>>
>>87933616
Maybe people dislike Finding Dory because they don't like Dory aka leddit as a fish
>>
>>87942001
It's not like anyone at Pixar can even animate traditionally anyways.
>>
>>87933232
Monster U wasn't bad, but you'd be lying if you said it was anywhere near good as the original. The original wasn't perfect either, but it had a fairly novel and unique concept with a great aesthetic which Monster U sorely lacked.
>>
>>87940399
Toy Story 3
>>
>>87947156
Come the fuck on, Toy Story 3 was shameless nostalgia pandering.
