This composition is guided strongly enough that the reading direction reversal in the third row won't mix people up, right?
>>
>>87932080
Might be tricky. The link from Panel 6 might be enough, but the seperate balloons on the left side might confuse things.

Would it be a hassle if the balloon-chain passed overhead before continuing down the left side? (Put part 3 in the centre-top, connecting it to the left chain.)
>>
>>87932080
>>87932241
If all else fails, just remove the link from panel 6 so the big panel reads left to right as normal.
>>
>>87932080
Yes, the structure seems clear enough, with the speech balloons leading out of panel 6 onto panel 7.
I would have Skalmold facing the cat, so she's looking in the direction you're meant to be reading (though you'd also need to change panel 9 as well...).
Of the left most speech balloons, I'd move the upper one away from the corner and down and to the right (it's currently sitting at the "start" of panel 7, so moving it away from the edges would reduce it's likelihood of being read first), while the lower one would just move down to be closer to, and lead into, panel 8.
If you haven't already planned it, see if you can manage something in the background of panel 7 that leans from the upper right to the bottom left, as a further guide to the eye (beams of sunlight, leaning trees, etc).

>>87931164
This is /hyw/ #329
>>
>>87932241
You mean without going down on the right?
I'd worry about having the reader completely miss the characters if I didn't have them sandwiched in between two sets of text.

>>87932264
True, it can work just fine without any fancy tricks if it has to.

>>87932291
>I would have Skalmold facing the cat, so she's looking in the direction you're meant to be reading
The reason I have her pointing away from the cat is that she's almost getting up but then the cat says something that surprises her. The break between the direction of her body and the direction of her eyes is supposed to indicate the interrupted action. Maybe if I had her upper body pointing right but her entire head turned back to the cat, I could do what you're suggesting while keeping that idea.
I don't know how I'd go about changing panel 9, though - I want to keep the 180 line and have her focus on the cat.
Maybe if I put more focus on the cat's face?

Definitely a good point about the upper left speech balloon.

>something in the background of panel 7 that leans from the upper right to the bottom left
I was thinking something that follows the S-curve between the speech bubbles, rather than a straight line between panels 6 and 8.

i haven't posted here in a long time, college kept me really busy during these past months

i had to slow down the plans i had for the comic used to post before, it was just to big for me to keep track of it while going to school

but now thanks to my art class i finally got an excuse to start drawing this little one shot comic called Guts, it takes place on the same world as my other comic , so i guess now it will serve as a little prequel side story

Here is a wip of the cover with all the main characters on it, i have already sketched the first pages i hope i can post them here during the weekend

More and more each day, I'm getting closer to starting it. I'll probably start mine soon in about a month or two. Still, I feel like the nuances of world building are what's holding me back.

Things like, what kind of technology should this setting have? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to history, I don't know how a society or the inside of a home should look to reflect the development of a culture. I wish there were references for this sort of thing
>>
>>87933706
Well, what kind of society is it? What kind of society in the real world would it mirror best?
I find it's much easier to start by saying "this society is like X except" than it is to make something up out of whole cloth. Even relatively simple changes can make something interesting and new.
"This society is like 15th century england except the climate is like South America and the gods are mexican"

"This society is like traditional inuits except they took over the world with ice magic and are now like the Mongol Empire"
>>
>>87933706
Think about where they live, what kind of resources they would have available to them.

This is what research is for; look up real-world cultures for ideas and put your own spin on it. Mix and match if you have to, but try not to just put one obvious thing from one place on top of another obvious thing from a different place.
>>
>>87933841
this is good advice, thank you

>>87933847
for some reason, when you mentioned resources, that made things a little clearer for me, thank you

I guess I just have to do some more thorough research. I tried something like that once, but I started off with googling something like "historical fishing boats" and I felt a little silly.
>>
Hooray! new thread.
>>87932080
mmmmaaybe.. but it would be so easy to grab the tail of the 2nd row's bottom-right bubble and carry it over to the top-left of the next row. or just not connect them at all. I don't see what it accomplishes.
>>
>>87932291
Drat, she's right
next thread is #330, guys.
>>87933706
neat style. Just for fun, why not make it feel like our almost-substantiated innuendo about some ancient cultures, whom we've found a few unexpected trinkets from that indicate they had technology that the world at large later lost? baghdad batteries and all that.
You don't have to go full atlantis-precursors or anything but they should be able to have anything that requires simple thought to invent, as early as there were people to think of it. Use old-timier versions of modern conveniences, like aqueducts instead of underground pipes
>>
>>87934650
>more thorough research
You don't really need to be more thorough, you just need to be more specific. "history of fishing boats" isn't going to get good results, but "X period/civilization fishing boat" probably would.

I don't have much experience with animation, but from what I hear if this is hand-drawn frame by frame, don't expect to get much faster. Disney animators at their peak only did 14 seconds a week, and modern direct-to-video animation "only" gets up to about 18 seconds per week.

Other things I hear animation schools like:

your wrinkles are actually pretty good for a start. Those take a lot of practice. And your hands are relatively okay. the sandal straps are kind of haphazard but I know how annoying thos can be to draw over and over in different poses. Right now the pants-legs seem to be pulled up to different lengths. Basically it's hard to get specific because everything needs some work, but no one thing is sticking out really badly

>>
>>87936876
>texture on everything except the shading of the skin
I hate the texture, by the way.
There's line variation, but it seems pretty random. The lines and coloring definitely aren't precise enough for how thin you're making them.
I don't understand what kind of motion the pose is supposed to evoke. I don't see a defined line of action and the clothes and hair are going in all sorts of weird directions. Especially what is going on with his feet? His legs have totally different proportions.
I can't tell where the light is supposed to be coming from.

The face is decent, but his eyeline and nose don't quite line up properly.
Hands are nice and dynamic, although the anatomy is a little wonky at the wrists. Good sense of depth around the hands and face.

Don't get me wrong, you could probably tell a story I'd enjoy with art like this, but the art would not be a draw.

>fair enough, but I can't think of any other way to evoke an ancient mural type of feel
First off, the texture needs to go on top of everything else. Second, it mustn't be regular and even. Try looking up images of ancient frescoes and see how the plaster has cracked and chipped cracked over the centuries and try to hand-paint the effect on top of your image. There's probably a simpler way to get the look than painting it by hand, but it's a necessity if to try it out for a while so you can get to understand what you need it to look like.
Third, don't use pure white and vibrant colors. That's all faded. Try color-picking from a picture of an old Roman fresco.

> It sounds like you'd recommend thicker outlines then
Yeah, at least for outlines. inside details, maybe not so much. This album has a really good tutorial on utilizing line weight http://imgur.com/a/IkoEZ#5

>what are your thoughts on that
Dynamism in posing stems mostly from having a clear line of action - pic related are some examples of how I'd pose him dynamically.

Traditional fighting stances CAN be stiff, but it's not at all necessary, especially once you start playing with angles and perspective. The fighting "stances" of most martial arts are not static poses to be held, but rather specific, important points in the constant motion of the fighter, so they work better as reference when you have the character coming into or going out from the stance.

>unclear lighting
I think the main issue is that he's not casting a shadow on his left leg.

>>87936876
Besides everything else already said, you reeeally need to work on your lines. There are a lot of places where they don't connect, it's messy, but not in a controlled way. If you're going for something that could look like a calligraphic brush, you could try something like this. You can see that the lines are wobbly in places, but it's done in a purposeful way.
Basically use a big brush size, but press very lightly when you want the lines to be thin, and press down harder when you want them to be thick. The parts of the body that are closer to the "camera" should be slightly thicker while things further away should be thinner.

Blue-Yellow-Red-Green

Open the door and enter the room - he got scare by the smoke – Ask why there is smoke inside - peek behind something.

The RED and GREEN panels have the same background that suggest continuation of a singular act and the YELLOW panel look more related to the BLUE by the similarity in sizes.

The YELLOW panel make he look at the smoke in surprise more that he feel the presence of someone else in the room.

Something with the eyes seems to be off like there just a bit lopsided when looking close...

She only wearing a long sleeve? Oooh sexy.

Did ya do a concept sheet for her would love to see it.
>>
>>87945817
Eh I'd rather have her have larger brests but I can make the rest of her a little bigger. She is also supposed to be a "waifu".

Yeah she comes off as hipster but i like it but she could have different glasss all the time.

Yeah they are weird,I can not really draw perfect circles and I'm terrible at symmetry.

No sheet yet this was just early concept.

Her being a comic character, I think it will be okay for you to proceed as planned.
For better or worse, when it comes to drawing tits, you are more or less on your own. most crit you get is going to be filtered through hang-ups (they're too big! boob socks aren't real! They don't work that way!) or fetish.
I could literally find a model is 2 seconds with way bigger natural tits than your drawing, but a lot of people seem to think big tits were invented with implants. Further, giant fake tits are a thing in the real world.

You could save a lot of time going the puppet rigging way (I don't remember the technical name for it). You can save a lot of time, but you'll have to accept your animation being more limited and stiffer.

Still, you can still make pretty neat stuff with it.

gotta agree. that thing is fantastic-looking. I don't know that many people who draw wings better'n I do (not that mine are that good)
I've been seeing a lot of characters lately with arm-sized bird wings... it's funny because they're useless as wings OR as arms, yet they look kinda good. kinda like the tiny wings look good on velociraptors and shit

i'm hoping the landscape will be more clear when I add shading.
basically the premise is that they're approaching a giant crater with a rock arch in the middle.
kinda like an inverse doughnut, or like pic related, but in a crater.
>>
>>87949848
forgot to mention, the building is kinda carved into the arch-pillar
>>
>>87949893
oh okay that was my next question
how and why the fuck would you do that? i mean, right into stone? and bothering to put the edges of a roof on it? that's nuts. I love it. Like some giant did some fucking scrimshaw
I guess the original arch tapered somewhat as it went up, but if it didn't, that would be a lot visually clearer. if there was a slight overhang at the top just as there is an edge at the bottom. Obviously as it stands, the top roof part of the building at least was not carved into the arch (which is too narrow at that point) but instead added around it. which makes sense. Just clarifying.
>>
>>87950122
also, presumably they had to walk downward to get into said crater, and now they have to go back up again on that bridge.. whoever set it up like that instead of a gentle slope from the rim to the door is a dick. Or maybe someone who doesn't want visitors
>>

cc015w.png

>>87950122
I think you're right, it should be more visually clear. I originally drew a bigger picture, but zoomed it in to bring attention to the building. but bringing it out would give better situational awareness.
>>87950235
there is actually no reason for the pathway to go *down* into the crater, other than thematic reasons. I wanted the manor to look imposing and larger than life.
...come to think of it, I should have slanted the perspective, make it come from the bottom up, that would've made it appear more intimidating
>>
>>87950428
then again, making the perspective more dynamic would probably reduce environmental/situational awareness
>>
>>87950428
>>87950457
if you have a chance, maybe make a shot of them at the door, looking up at the building receding into the distance, looming above them
otherwise fuckit. the scale in this shot is already really awe-inspiring. it doesn't need to be imposing, it looks impossible. it's like scrooge mcduck's money bin. a building like that demands respect merely for existing.

Asian skin tone probably works best. Not a huge fan of the long ear locks, but if you like them that's fine - they'll make it easier to tell it's her if she ever needs to wear a funny hat, anyway.
As for exactly what she smokes, originally I was thinking either plain ol' cigarettes or vaping because she's a hipster, but now that you mention it it might be fun if she just smoked everything from cigars to hookahs to vaping to giant novelty meerschaum pipes.

>>87945345
>>87945558
It doesn't have to be the skin color I went with exactly, but I feel like one of them should be significantly darker than the other. Right now the lighter skin tone looks better, but I think that's mainly because her makeup and glasses haven't changed color to compensate.
Also, I missed this earlier, but could she have a human nose?

As for the body frame and breasts, I don't mind at all. It gives her a different body from her co-star and it's not like this is a comic that strives for realism in the first place. The one thing I might change about it is having her lean back a little more when standing so she looks more balanced.

Don't fret, just let it sit in the back of your head until you come up with a story that works. it doesn't have to be great, don't worry about how good it is, just whether it works. ongoing-plot comic writing is like stringing together randomly strewn-about planks so you can play 'the floor is lava'
the big easy one might seem far off, but wait around and something else will drift by that you can drag over between this one and the next.

For the ear-locks, my main problem is the silhouette becoming too similar to the other one, so making them more complicated wouldn't really help.
>>
>>87958583
I'll try, the thing is, I'm not sure how to continue where I left off.
What I initially thought seems 2edgy4u now, I'm trying to tone it down, so it fits the characters better, but I'm really drawing a blank.

I think I should do something else, and let inspiration come on its own, but I hate to do that.
>>
>>87959513
Just write out the 2edgy version and then write out a bunch of variations. Five or six. Doesn't matter if they're stupid ideas, just write them out.

Or maybe the guy who's going to go edgy gets right up to the edge before going "oh god what am I doing" and then there's fallout from that.
>>
>>87959513
it's a comedy, just get some inspiration and get funny. look at things from a cock-eyed angle and write that.
It might help to go watch some 90s media from the peak of insensitivity. some seinfeld or some old anime where 'offensive' or 'edgy' things are played for laughs
you don't have to tone it down to change the tone to a more lighthearted one. lighthearted might not be 'down', it might just be.. eh.. off to the right somewhere.

FUCK

Well, since you love worldbuilding, I'm drunk and spilling my "big idea" I've had kicking around, so I'd really like any thoughts on it.

"Skelebros". Yes, cashing in on the skeleton meme.
The Nightlands, and an established setting and concept you can read up on. The Last Redoubt is a fortress at the end of time, on a dead planet, after the stars have died out, surrounded by lovecraftian horrors waiting for the last of it's shielding to fail so they can eat the final souls inside. All other Redoubts on the planet have already been cracked. In my comic, necromancy exists, and the Redoubt casts out it's dead as undead to serve in an auxiliary and first-line defense. They're fed and kept in check by limited payouts of magic in capsules which keeps them "alive". This operates as a loose "army" of sorts which never actually sees the living. They don't keep their memories, save for fragments, and the eulogy when they die the 2nd and final time involves a reading of their life in the Redoubt from people that knew them. Service as Undead is seen as redemption. There's several divisions of forces. Ground troops are Army of Darkness, fighting man-sized horrors enmasse. Airforces are recon and support, consisting of both skelecopters and skeleplanes. Those are small highly trained small teams with specialized individuals, EG sharpened arm-bones for propellers with wing-armed skeles and a gunner supplied by magic-pods for long-range missions. The most veteran are recruited as the remade. The remade have had the outside of their bones recast in (limited) magic alloy, and serve as elite ground teams.

Some are put into "giants"-teams, highly trained skeletons which mass up to form a giant by all holding onto each other, with a captain to yell orders for manuevers which are carried out telephonegame style ("LEFT FORWARD", "RIGHT HOOK", ETC) with skeletons in position contracting or pushing as trained. These are for fighting Kaiju-grade threats.
The Sentinels are the last defense. AWOL skeles have their bones ground and cast in alloy to form Golems with no free will, which is seen as horrifying by the normal undead.

General plot follows a "pearl". Refers to the newly made undead having pearly-bones. Major events so far: 1) Popular-good-guy elite dies, eulogy reveals he was a piece of shit in life. Skeles ponder the concept of redemption. 2) Lost recon skeleplane that goes down with magipods into an acidlake. A remade team is sent to recover the magipods, the downed skeletons are disposable and know it but try to survive. 3) A resupply mission is sent to one of the destroyed redoubts, where they find a small tribe of undead hiding, trying to survive. Some of the remade knew them as friends, had assumed them fully dead, and completing the mission would ensure the death of those in the colony.
4) A member of a skelecopter team is killed. The rest of the team deals with grief and trying to train a replacement.
4) Pearl starts recovering fragments of life memory and cue philosophical discussions. 5) A rare expedition of the living leaves the Redoubt. Their faces are never seen, and the skelebros are rightfully terrified of them.
6) All lines fail, and the Sentinels are deployed with horrifying efficiency. Everyone ponders why these aren't the defacto defense, why everyone isn't made into a Sentinel, and whether the morals of this would balance out, and what rights the living really have to do any of this.

7) The shields fluctuate. Weapons built into the redoubt are used in a final plot twist. Everyone is relieved, but worried about the energy left if they've had to resort to necromancy this long.
8) A small rebellion is staged. Finally it is quelled by necromancers from the Redoubt.
9) The shields unexpectedly fail. It's over. Many undead go AWOL, some stay and fight to the end. The future of "life" as undead is questionable, and very limited. Soon the survivors that fled will run out of magic.

Minor events:
One popular entertainment is theatre, though "arts" are embraced in general. Comedies making fun of the living and the fact they have flesh is popular.
Team-building exercises for Pearls involve betting games, where they pretend to be each other. When you finally call who they really are, you can test with a fingerjoint that's taken off before the game, it will snap in place to it's owner. This helps establish identity and familiarity when everyone looks similar.
Battle of the bands, because why wouldn't they.

Eh, I'm forgetting a lot of smaller worldbuilding stuff, especially minor events fluff and stuff, but I've downed a 6 pack of beer and that's like 60-70% of the concept that I had.

I've had this idea kicking around, but frankly I think nobody would give a fuck since it was indeed spawned from the skelecopter concept, then applying too much thought to the concept of militarized skeletons.

Maybe /tg/ would like the concept.

>will fund via comic patreon

Woah, dude, I'm trying to do this and it's fucking *expensive*. A good artist is $60 bucks a page.

I pay $480/mo for two pages a week, and despite decent pageviews and a bunch of Tumblr followers, my patreon is $30/mo, meaning I'm in a $450 hole every month.

And if you think you can avoid this by finding cheaper artists, don't be surprised if they bail. Unless you have a *substantial* following already, you can't fund a comic on patreon.
>>
>>87975380
>maybe address whether that can run out too or whatever
That's what keeps them there, serving to protect the Redoubt. They need magic to stay alive, and the magic is both limited and hard to find elsewhere.

I don't. I lived with my parents for a while, paid off my student loans, and built up a bunch of savings that the comic habit is slowly eating away. I'm not in any danger of going destitute anytime soon, but over the last year or so 20 grand in savings has become 15 grand in savings. (Admittedly there are other lifestyle choices that could mitigate this; I eat out too much etc)

My plan is that I'm close enough to finishing Legend of the Hare that I might as well, and then I'm going to focus only on Saffron and Sage as a one/week for a slightly more reasonable $240 a month.

Though if you're concerned about my financial situation, you could always donate to the patreon I'm about to shamelessly shill: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=195773

While I'm on 'break', I was planning on redoing the first 40 pages of my comic because it's really bad and I want to redraw and rewrite a lot of the story. Should I go "all out" or should I not put a lot of work in the pages so that the jump between BRAND NEW OLD PAGE and page 41 aren't so drastic?

>>
>>87975457
60$ for a page isn't a lot. Maybe for an amateur artist.
If it takes 6 to 8 hours to finish a colored page (and depending on the quality level, it may take more), that's be 60$ / 8h, 7.5$ an hour, which is around minimum wage in the US.
I guess it depends on the quality you're looking for though, and if it's some kid doing it on the side, it may work out, doing a page in a couple of hours with wonky composition, anatomy and rendering.
Of course, you may be willing to work for (much) less when working on your own passion project, but that doesn't really factor in when you're working on someone else's dream story.
>>
Bump again.
>>
>>87980398
Yeah, I was gonna say, 60/page is pretty good. If you found a reliable artist who will do that with the sort of quality you're showing, you scored.

I just got up and am drinking for breakfast. Anyone want me to crit/redline their panel layouts/framing? I secretly hate all your composition but don't want to rip anyone apart without consent.
>>
>>87981209
I'm always looking to learn something, and with my slow output, panel composition is a thing I'm not experimenting as much as I probably should be.
You want me to post a specific page I want feedback on, or could I ask you to just look through my pages and give general advice?
>>
>>87981252
Honestly, you're one of the better looking ones in this thread, making crit more of a challenge. You have a really good eye for distributing characters and background in the right way to show what is going on, which a lot of people underestimate. I've got your comic up, any page sequence in particular you want me to take a look at?
>>
>>87981382
Not really - I figure with composition, most of the time you make a mistake you won't know you've made a mistake, y'know?
I guess the most recent pages are the most relevant, so if you could look through page 17-23 of the current chapter for things that could be improved, that'd be great.

Sometimes I don't know if I'll ever get this comic off the ground, I've been working on it off and on for 10 years now. So much has changed in the story as I've grown as an artist, writer, and overall person.

>Any ideas for what I should have done differently? Keep her head aligned with her body and just have her eyes point at the tent, maybe?

If she's stretching like that, you have an excuse to arc her back and puff her chest out, which will make it clear which way her torso is facing. You did it in a later panel pretty clearly.

>What, the one with the birds? Really? I figured she'd be really hard to miss since she's right next to one of the tweets.

I think the problem is that the tweets take precedence. The bright red birds and white speech bubbles say "this is the important thing to look at" while the character is about as obvious as any of the leaves or rocks.

A lot of people will probably notice her, but my attitude toward comicking is that you generally want to make the crucial storytelling elements AS easy as possible for anyone to follow. If I misread a panel while drinking for breakfast, there's probably like 10% or more of your readers who are going to misread it. Maybe because they're also drinking for breakfast, or maybe just because they're watching TV while they read, or listening to music, or reading quickly to see if the two main characters fuck.

>>87982312
>Yeah - something as simple as having the last panel of >>87981937 (You) center the character would have made the flip a lot less jarring.

I was kind of thinking that, yeah. The big problem with the log is that your later panels are a complete inverse of the panel that establishes the scene. It's very easy to assume the flowers on the log just disappeared, when they're actually just on the other side. And like I mentioned, it sort of throws off people's ability to build a mental "map" of the area, which is important for both making them seem trapped and conveying movement-based body language. Things like the loop while speaking, spinning around when she jumps off of the log, or the cat gradually getting closer to her as he speaks adds a lot to the scene if people accurately infer it.
>>
>>87982353
I'm no expert, but it seems to me that when you've worked on a comic for ten years and you haven't gotten one page done yet, you should probably try making a different comic instead.
Do something cheap and disposable, rather than a baby you've been doting on for years and years. You're almost certainly gonna mess up on your first try and you know it, so the fear of failure is going to be overwhelming and paralyzing. Make up a new thing.

Once you understand how cheap and easy ideas are, you'll be much better equipped to tackle it.
>>

>>
>>87981954
*clear movement

But yeah, that's everything I've got. Like I said, your comicing is already really good compared to most of the things here. Almost every panel makes it clear how we transitioned to it from the previous panel, which is a point a lot of people (even ones who draw very well) miss in comics.
>>
>>87982505
I kind of intended the "WAIT IS THAT A CAT" to sound a bit weird since she's panicking.

>nm I guess all the horses died
Do you think it's a problem that it was left a bit vague until then?

>did you just make your friend step in your pee
Yes. I thought it might be a funny callback to have the characters acknowledge it once the scene has calmed down again.

>The bright red birds and white speech bubbles say "this is the important thing to look at" while the character is about as obvious as any of the leaves or rocks.
Yeah, I see where you're coming from. Maybe if I had a tweet get her attention in the previous panel and then its tail went right by her as she sits in the background?

>Do you think it's a problem that it was left a bit vague until then?

Nah, I don't think it's important. The next page makes it clear that the horses are all dead, and the implications this has.

>>87982905
>Thanks for taking the time to help me out, Anon. I probably won't go back and revise these pages, but I'll be saving your comments to think about.

You're welcome! And yeah, I'd hardly expect you to go back and fix a bunch of minor rough spots pertaining to the location of a log. "I have to fix the earlier pages" is an attitude that tends to kill comics (HINT HINT, REST OF THREAD). I just hope people will learn from critique and improve on their past work, or the work of others.

>>
>>87984041
What worked for me in that situation was to stop planning and just start drawing.
I'd been half thinking about the idea for a few months, I had like half a page worth of outline for my first chapter and I just went for it, making things up as I went.
Sure, it didn't result in a perfect comic - the early pages are full of wasted pages and awkward panels and inconsistent character designs - but it's a lot better than all the comics I never got around to drawing.
>>
>>87984225
I never stopped working on them, I just focused on the lore and more character arcs. I always wanted every character to be able to pull a chapter on their own.
>>
>>87984330
Do a short comic.

Do not wait, do not plan more than ten pages. Find one short story you can tell in the setting. Something that could stand on its own, absolutely alone with no companion pieces in a larger series. Focus on that story. Tell it in ten pages. Do not plan more. Focus on those ten pages or less.

Put that out.

Then do it again. And do one more. Then, and only then, will planning a large project be more than wheel-spinning.
>>
>>87984330
That sounds like textbook creator procrastination.

Dreaming of big complex projects is a lot more fun, a lot more simple and a lot less frightening than actually taking the steps necessary to bring the idea into the world, which is hard, boring and dangerous to the ego.
>>
>>87984457

Good. Crank out most of the work on ten pages in the span of maybe two months, or however long you want to do it in. That's plenty of time. Parcel your time out. Plan ONLY for a ten-page short-comic and make it something that could be read and be at least satisfying in just that time, even if it's just atmosphere or one simple, unoriginal conflict resolution. Put yourself on some rough limit and charge through it in that time.

personally I'm looking forward to nerding out sometime over the concept of spells requiring super contrived things like emotional states or the seventh son of a seventh son or shit like that, and some scholarly mage explaining how it isn't even the main thing making the spell work, just something that makes it easier. magical lubricant as it were. and how adding a limiter (wake up from true love's kiss etc) is like adding a flaw in a DnD character, gives you more points.. you just try to pick one you think is unlikely, and/or make the legend about it really vague so only you remember it when it's brought up, kinda like the secret question for your passwords

but somehow i think you're going for something a little less convoluted.. howbout it just involves interesting creatures in some way? cool monsters are ALWAYS fun. maybe a hybrid that was never possible before
or two prophets giving conflicting prophecies
or collecting magic colored pencils that each have different effects when something is drawn with them
or someone who appears to have a certain powerset but in actuality the powers belong to someone else, who's trapped inside some trinket they carry.. and that way the person carrying it can die tragically or whatever, but the cool powers can continue on in the form of the one who was trapped in there, after escaping. or if the carrier lives, they now have to work out some new way to be useful.
>>
>>87987574
>seventh son
Hey, I saw that movie

I think we're going opposite directions in regards to how we want magic to work. I will tell you that a major plot point (as far as lore is concerned) is the event that created the Nephilim actually happened and explains a lot of the different mythologies
>>
>>87987793
ah that old chestnut again. technically it only mentioned them as a timepoint, didn't explicitly say they were the half-angels. but that's still a really neat concept.
and the 'single thing is responsible for myriad of stories' concept is pretty old too, but it works really well.
i cant think of a specific kind of plot under that cirumstance either, no wonder you're having trouble. Best just pick a single person and follow their journey of figuring out how all of this pertains to them personally
>>
>>87987881
Tha'ts why it's really only important to the lore, but it essentially bores down to the angels, at least many of the ones in charge of Earth, are tasked to ensure the human's survival in a cosmic trial. Creating the Nephilim was considered "cheating"
>>
>>87988087
ahh righto.
okay well that still doesn't lend itself well to a SHORT story, but.. could still have something nice about someone on cleanup duty.. perhaps one of the halfnhalfs assisting one of the proper angels in some kind of task that protects human survival, keeps things subtle and unseen, and maaaybe just makes up a little bit for the guilt of being something that wasn't supposed to exist.

Not that guy, and I'm no expert, but I've done a teeny tiny bit of research by asking authors and looking for publicly viewable visitor numbers and comparing them with patreon pledges, and even the best viewership/patreondosh ratios I've seen (for stuff like niche fetish comics) wouldn't break $480 a month without around 2000 readers.
I definitely wouldn't expect it before you're consistently hitting 8k uniques per update, maybe more in the two-pages-per-week scenario.if you're updating less than three times a week (there seems to be some correlation between update frequency and how much money people are willing to spend).

SUCH a cat

wait, not a cat?
one thing I'm seeing is.. you don't put any space in for the apostrophe for posessives, which makes it a tiny bit harder to see there is one.
also 'those of ymir's children who' is a bit awkward. I think you've said ymir enough times there to just say 'even those of his children tho'
>>
>>87989718

>>
>>87989385
The middle row tripped me up a little. One thing is that it's not really clear why the axe makes a sound I guess maybe it was leaning against the tree trunk she's sitting on, but the way the trunk curves up at that camera angle makes that hard to infer.

On panel six, at first I thought the cat was responding to the thing she just said. If you're going to have him jump back a topic like that, I feel like the "Oh, I think I've heard that story!" bubble should overlap the "We should really go after her" bubble, cutting off the end a bit. It would emphasize that he's not responding to her current statement, but interrupting her.
>>
>>87989813
>makes a sound. I guess maybe

Get me a pregnancy test, my sentence missed its period.
>>
>>87989813
Honestly I see no reason at all to not just make the fourth row its own independent row, with word bubbles in order, that goes from left to right, and follows the last bubble in the bottom-right of the previous row... like every row in every comic does.

After watching that youtube video about how spamming mediocre content gets you more revenue than well thought high-effort content, I have decided to downgrade my art and make 5 lame comics a week instead of putting effort in a single one. Mad shekels here I go!!!

>>87989718
>wait, not a cat?
It's supposed to come off as if he sees the killing of Ymir as a bad and immoral thing, which is rather out of character for a cat.

>>87989813
Yeah, the axe is going to be surreptitiously leaning against the tree in the first few panels.
I couldn't get the cat to cut her off properly, because there wasn't room for both of their speech balloons in the same place. Maybe if I added another tail going downwards from her, like she was going to say something else that he the interrupted.

>>87989841
Well, the main reason I did it is because with the way I made panel 5, I was jumping straight down to the right edge of panel 6 even when I had the balloons going left to right.
I also kind of feel like it adds to the sense of "wtf why is this cat talking about this gory story stuff".

Of course they'll be MORE inclined. I just wanna know if it's even feasible to earn anything from the promise of updates alone.

I mean I could offer rewards, but I'm not sure the best way to do so. The idea of "locking" content behind a paywall sickens me to the core, but promises to deliver extra content/requests/etc. to patrons sounds like it would take too much time out of making actual comics and defeat the purpose of trying to earn money so I can have more time to work on them.

Just make it temporary.
People will pay to see pages a day early, and you have a month-long buffer, right?
Patreon also lets you make things that are free to everyone, like additional updates if you reach a milestone.
>>
>>87990251
>I couldn't get the cat to cut her off properly, because there wasn't room for both of their speech balloons in the same place. Maybe if I added another tail going downwards from her, like she was going to say something else that he the interrupted.

I think that would just make it seem like she was saying whatever the cat said.

It looks like you could fit the "we should really go after her" bubble down in the panel's lower right, though. It might even flow better visually, since there'd be no big vertical jump after "she forgot her axe?.

>>87990465
>God dammit, I have decent mass-appeal and could definitely win over a big audience of edgy young weebs but I don't know how to get out there and get more exposure.

There isn't a lot of success to be had in mass appeal. Way too many people misunderstand this.

Something that kind-of-appeals to everyone super-appeals to nobody. And people can just go find media that perfectly fits all their tastes and interests instead.
>>
>>87991168
I guess I misunderstood the term "mass appeal".

What I mean is there's a very large demographic that my comic can easily appeal to, not that appeals to many different demographics.

Ooh, clever solution. The interruption works a lot better there.

>>87991269
>What I mean is there's a very large demographic that my comic can easily appeal to, not that appeals to many different demographics.

Depending how large and well-catered-to the demographic in question is, it might be about the same. It helps to identify a very narrow and ignored group that your stuff would hold massive appeal to.
>>
>>87988496

I have a thousand followers on my Tumblr and Legend of the Hare was consistently hitting 1,500 pageviews/day at its peak, at which point I was maybe getting forty-odd bucks a month on Patreon. Since that's a tenth of what I needed to break even, I'll say that you need ten times that - 15,000 uniques/day - to support a twice-weekly comic on Patreon. Advertising money is pretty marginal.
>>
>>87991787
Well, it doesn't strictly need to, but I feel like the spiraling flow adds impact to the page and makes it more interesting like I said up in >>87990251 . There's also an element of just wanting to see what happens when I bend the rules.

>>87992056
Good to hear.
>>
>>87992056

>It helps to identify a very narrow and ignored group that your stuff would hold massive appeal to.

The ur-example of this would be furries. Lots of people made fun of them, but they had dosh, so making stuff for them was very profitable.

Probably the furries of the 2010s are the "alt-right". Lots of them hate mainstream webcomics, but no good webcomics for them.
>>
>>87992875
That's.. not really the order that went in
it's more like
1. furries are more inclined to form little social groups with other ones
2. communities grow, people do lots of art
3. normies see this, find it repulsive, make fun of it and them
>>
>>87992875
There's more examples than that, if you look beyond outright stigmatized groups. Order of the Stick is jokes about a single tabletop gaming system, and its Kickstarter (which would only appeal to readers) made 3 million dollars.

Or, the Foglios basically make their living off the steampunk community.

If you try to profit off of trans-centered comics in the vein of Assigned Male and are found to not be transgender you'll likely get crucified/excommunicated by the community. They really hate cis people profiting off of them, especially since so many of them are dirt poor and there's a limited audience as it is.

Make basic figures for starters, then you can make a lot of templates covering different angles and needs you may have to compile them into something bigger and better.
This one only moves eyes and mouth, but is rigged to move her head, hair, neck, body and arms independently, tho' I dunno why I did it, cause it was a one time thing, and I never got back to experiment with it, but it helps to do small things you can tweak to make a bigger thing.

>>88023271
Its rarely used and most authors dont do"Free flowing" grids that well. NPGs allow for control and for a comedic work such a static form works well as it is reminiscent od the simple camerawork of a sitcom.

I love how I downloaded this amazing pose reference folder and so far aside from a few hand references, this is the most I've used from it.. because I saw this weird pose and thought it looked like a cool spaceship. like the arms are nacelle-esque.
but since I don't want it to actually BE a robot I'm thinking I should change some of the lines so it looks like a rigid structure and not something covered in joints. it's hard because I never draw spaceships or vehicles at all, just lots of robots. you get into a habit. the greebles are totally different

If you're only interested in the use of 9PG's, then you're going to be disappointed; I don't use them very often and it's just that it worked best for this one-pager.

My website is bahala-na.co.uk where you can find more cartoon animal people and a bunch of old, old strips.
>>
>>88026036
Cut your loss and do something else for a few days.
Make a blog post on your site that says "so sorry, having author's block. Regular service will return next week".
If Saturday comes around and you're still stuck, just make a silly unrelated joke strip that you can upload on Monday and talk to someone (preferably someone whose writing chops you trust) about what you should do with your story.
And I mean in concrete terms, not abstract ones like "I think my story's getting too edgy what do I do".
>>
>>88026667
I think I will do that. Nothing will change by looking at the same blank paper.
It doesn't help that at my workplace I've been switched to the day shift until new year, and I can't draw on the office during the day the same way I did at night.

I think I'll try more stuff with anime studio, and finish colouring ColdFusion's crossover this week.

Thanks for the advice! I haven't felt this blocked in ages, I'm not sure if I' drained with this particular work, or it's just me being stupid.

So, I want my comedy character to be casually religious to give her some more potential for jokes, but giving her an actual serious real-world religion would both risk getting people butthurt and be more limiting than just making something up.

So which is a funnier replacement for Christianity to you guys; The church of the flying spaghetti monster, or the church of Cthulhu?

General modern-day independent western woman.
Humor would vary; some of it would be from her atheist friend's perspective of "man, religions seem weird to outsiders", some of it would be her troubles dealing with the more hardcore members of her family, some of it would be just visual jokes of having the flying spaghetti monster or cthulhu in places where you'd expect crucifixes, like a church.

I was hoping to finish the inks today, but I got stalled on the last panel.

I'd like to have the mouse scuttle away while she shouts or throws something at him, but I can't figure out an angle for the scene. Preferably something that doesn't involve awkward persepective.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>88030135
The current angle seems fine, but you could try having her off-panel or only showing her feet. People will infer that she's throwing whatever's raining down on the mouse.

Yeah, that's about right.

because everyone who's sensitive is going to have an even easier time "knowing" you're talking SPECIFICALLY about them and mocking them unkindly
when a major part of the story is the conflict between people who do the same thing in different ways, orthodox vs casual/lipservice, you're already tightrope-walking on fishing line. It's not just two extremes, it's an infinite number of gradations in between.. and convincing most readers that they and/or their loved ones aren't represented by any of the negatively-portrayed ones is... it's gonna be hard if you give them any wiggle room.

ugh, was trying to combine this with another one, y'know as part of the 'switch between the split-up groups' thing, but it was too long, and the other was too long, and it took me a while to come up with a good ending.
at first I drew these cool seed-pod-lookin things at the end of the tentacles, but the claw-game claws are too irresistable
I still feel like the dialogue in the second-to-last panel needs work, it was so clear in my head until I tried writing it down. Same for the one before that. I was thinking like 'should've tried the doorbell!' or 'that's not "who's there" at all!"

I also hope the karasutengu thing isnt too sudden and random, it's continuity! but the last time they appeared was a tiny cameo 6 years ago, and the last proper appearance, 12 years ago, so... eh..
i added another two panels just to elaborate on their antics. Last time we saw them, their authorities were trying to put a stop to this kind of thing with magic monocles that ruined the illusions, so I guess that hasn't worked out. or else they're keeping it within the confines of their territory. maybe I'm overthinking it.

whoa, impressive. beware of that temptation, it WILL ruin you. but don't let those new ideas become so old that you lose them. Have a visit with them once in a while, remind yourself what they're about. do a little promotional art.

oooh I love dead people solving their own murders. there was this great flash game about ghosts called The Dead Case.. might be good inspiration I dunno
So he's a skellyfellow, obviously the title has to have a pun, and I'm good at those, but I'm drawing a blank on good mystery puns to portmanteau it with.. uh..

femurder.. no.. uh.. skullucidate. this.. that isn't a title.

shit I'm coming up bone dry. see it's easy when you don't have to meet several criteria. i can't even think of something princely to mix in with it..

You could go with something along the lines of Who The Fuck Killed Me? or It Was You, Wasn't It? they're good for googling at least. I Don't Know Who Killed Me But It Probably Wasn't My Surprise Twin
Or just fuckin.. Royal Bones. Prince Ribcage and the Other People in the Webcomic.

or hey what if one of the clues is that his skeleton is damaged somehow. a crack in the skull or whatever, a few broken ribs.. it'd make him distinctive. then you have your title. A Break in the Case. Dislocated Justice, I dunno. Prince Dexter and The Case of the Missing Scapula
>>

>>
>>88048941
The fact that I have two stories going at once is testament to my inability to resist the temptation. One of them is going to take Y E A R S to finish, so I'll have to cycle out side comics if I want to get anything done in the meantime. I could probably move one of my post-main-comic ideas into the queue after my current side comic, but this skelly story needs to go after my current comic because it's in the same world/continuity and ties in characters from it.

I've had a lot of my potential stories on hand for years after a brief period of creativity where I jammed out 5-10 really enjoyable concepts with full casts. I've recently entered into a second renaissance of ideas, which is terrible without followthrough because I eventually want to read them all myself, damn it. I need to hit a paperback novelist's pace.

An allusion to the actual method of murder might work.

How many pages does the average reader read of a new comic before either continuing to read it or dropping it? I'm wondering because I started doing some very rough pages and after getting stuck I decided to read it over and began to wonder if it was taking too long before anything actually happened.
>>
>>88052391
>average reader
I don't know, and I think it's a bad angle to take on the question because there are so many things that can affect a reader's patience.
What's your genre (A guy who's picked up a murder mystery won't mind too much if the murder isn't even committed before the end of the first issue, but a guy who picks up a lesbian porn comic had better get some titillation before page 6)? Why is your reader interested in the comic? Does the reader know there's gonna be a payoff eventually?

>before anything actually happened
Define "happened". Even if your story's about fighting ninjas, you can still hook the audience before the ninjas show up. Foreshadowing, character interaction, even to some extent world building can all serve to keep the audience's interest while you build up to the moment where shit gets real.

That said, the sooner you can get some promises delivered, the better. Cut out things that aren't important to the main plot and fit them back in AFTER you've hooked the audience.

If I were to offer early pages as a Patreon incentive, would a day early be enough? Or should it be a week early?

My update schedule is sporadic and much more frequently than once a week, but getting pages a day early doesn't sound like something someone would pay for.
>>
>>88052816
One day seems to work pretty well with the comics /co/'s always rambling on about.
>>
>>88052792
All good things are the result of common sense.

Mr. Webcomic Artist should know to either A) git gud BEFORE starting his thing or B) plan out his comic and draw pages in a jumbled order so the average art quality is average, with important parts (eg important plot points, intro and ending, technically challenging compositions) done at the end, when Mr. Webcomic Artist is at his best.

Anything else is less-than-common-sense. Unless you want to make some epic ten year long comic or whatever shit, but that's not my cup of tea. And I guess it doesn't matter as much for gag of the week comedy stuff.

Protip most people only read one page before quitting. I hope you have a good hook ;)
>>
>>88052816

I release mine a day early and at full resolution.
>>
>>88052391

Most webcomics start with less than amazing art. But as time goes on, people see the new pages and then the old pages and will make a decision to either binge read it all or just pick a more recent point to get onboard.

Just focus more on having the pages come out on time and seek improvement. Things will fall into place over time.
>>
>>88052792
Some people say they like seeing the artist improve over time and that that is one of the reasons they like webcomics, others won't be able to put up with it, no matter how good the art gets later on.

My advice would be to practice by doing a shorter comic, that way you can get the worst comic noob mistakes out of the way before starting your big project.
>>

Bump. This page is mostly done but I'm going to spend an hour or two fixing up the background before I move on to the next page.
Does anything stand out as particularly high-priority to you guys?
>>
>>88058129
Loving the details on the characters, I don't know what you're planning for the background, but the balance between contrast now is ok. I wouldn't touch that in particular.

Made a couple of adjustments to the final panel.
Moved the rear arm down and added a visible missile.

disregarding reality, a comic about a shape shifter and the two jerks who created him
>>
>>88058962
Alright, good to hear.
I'm not intending to add any contrast, just detail so the reader doesn't go "oh that looks weird" if their gaze wanders.

>>88059335
Krita, mostly round brushes of varying hardness and opacity, and lots of trying to mimic photographs. Is there anything in particular you want to know about? I'd be happy to go into details.
>>
>>88059640
what mostly i dont get is her face in the fourth and sixth panel, at a first glance it seems like a solid block of color, yet its clearly texturized and there is a very subtle shading going there, i have no idea how to do that
>>
>>88050204
okay at this point I am certain you are either altering the aspect ratio afterwards, or there's something wrong with your monitor setting. this stuff is definitely reduced horizontally, especially the heads that are tilted back.
>>
>>88051181

Oh fuck, thanks. This is why I should post WIPs more often. though they dont usually get much attentch

Well, I use a palette of six colors for the faces.
Four for the basic shading and two that are slightly(Slightly!) more saturated and red for the cheeks and lips. The ones I use in this scene are pretty dang close together ecause of the soft lighting.
I just block them in with a hard round brush or pen tool and then soften the transition with a soft round brush or airbrush tool. Here's an earlier version of panel six where I haven't softened things up yet.

It depends on so many things. If I'm finding nothing about it appealing, or finding it genuinely tiring, 3 pages and it's out.
if I like the art or the story and it looks like it has potential, I'll stick around a while.. but it has about 10 pages before something had better happen or i'm getting bored.
I CAN say that it's best you don't fuck around with the reader too much early on before they're hooked. It's a lot easier to say 'forget this' if something extra unpleasant happens right away. The boiling frog principle is fully in force there. I read Sister Claire for I think YEARS before picking up on what it was laying down. If you want readers, that's the way to go. Ease them into whatever's gonna piss them off.

3 pages in one week. Which beats my old record by 2 pages. I think I can do 5 next week, by just doing two at a time instead of three.
Much to nobody's surprise, I am averaging 1/4 ounce of India ink a page.

but that's the only part of that post I agreed with.. s'wrong with austerity?

>>88060836
It's looking pretty cool, at least at this distance.
5 pages a week would be pretty damn impressive for one man - that's almost an issue a month!

Ozzy is one of those people who says things like "I can't even." She may be the leader, but she's not the smartest.
>>
>>88059297
I totally didn't get this joke the first time until I read your blurb (your blurbs are interesting.. you have really neat insight, even if we don't always agree and you're a dirty foreigner. The one about how 'learning from history' is a pipe dream is something i've been trying to say forever, but rarely manage to put as eloquently)
I thought 'hurtful' meant 'to the person seeing it' and it was playing off how people act like seeing the wrong thing is an assault.

>>
>>88061659
thanks man, is the first time someone compliments my blurbs, and i agree i worded the "they can hurt just as much" in a somewhat clunky maner.
curious: you say dont agree with some of what i write, with what?

>>88061691
you're right, i usually say its about him because its faster and grabs the attention quicker than to say "its about these two guy who created a shapeshifter" in the end is about all three of them.
he wasn't going to be a part of the original comic, he was supposed to be a one off character that i was going to use and throw away...but then i decided to keep him because having three characters helps to mantain the dinamic fresh, if were only mark and susan their interactions would have gotten old really quickly
>>
>>88063155
meh, this and that. I don't even remember right now, and I prefer to file people away as generically cool rather than keeping a mental record of everything I disagree with

okay someone get a new thread ready.. i would but I'm busy with work
