Scrappy Doo was a character to hate because he acted as a way to be a shithead to get Scooby and the gang in trouble, but never got his just desserts. Daphne got into trouble frequently, but it was because she was ditzy and well-meaning. Scrappy started shit and never got hit, he's like the little shithead kid who went across a construction site and never got hurt, but caused someone else tremendous pain in trying to save them.

This thread is giving scrappy a bad rep. Scrappy was always brave enough to stand up to the evildoer in contrast to shaggy and Scooby always running like punks. The villian usually had no weapon anyway. Why If shaggy acted that way, he could potentially beat and outnumber the monster, but no. Instead, they always run.

I thought it was interesting too, how scrappy never actually got into a fight. Like he had some hidden power level just waiting to be revealed. You know, squirrels can do a number on a human..

Scrappy wasn't that bad, better than the other alternatives they tried to do ie dumb hick scooby and....that one brown kid.

The real problem was Scrappy Doo should have only been a 1 or 2 episode appearance but instead he was kept on and people got tired of him then hated him

A casual observance, but if Shaggy and Scooby beat the shit out of the monsters in anything but the Batman Brave in the Bold episode, it would send a terrible message to kids about solving problems with violence.

Anyway...Scrappy is a fun little foil to Scooby and Shaggy in the episodes where it's the standard SD formula of a guy in a mask plus one puppy because Shaggy and Scooby have to try to save him from being hurt. It shakes it up a little. At least in theory.

It's a little annoying in later seasons that he and Daphne take over Fred and Velma's roles of doing actual mystery solving and ghost trapping work, but at least those roles are there. 13 Ghosts is it's own thing but they have the same role there, and to be perfectly frank the skinny and fat ghosts were the worst characters ever.

Also it's own thing are the weird TV movies (Ghoul School, Boo Brothers, Reluctant Werewolf) where Scrappy is more of the straight man to the caper/situation at hand. Shaggy and Scooby get to be themselves in these and he's just part of the cast. The missing trio of Mystery Inc wouldn't fit as well into those plots so it's forgivable.

HOWEVER... The Scrappy Doo episodes that DON'T have dick to do with mystery solving, monster schooling, or ghost catching are atrociously bland and uncreative bullshit 11 minute shorts that have no mystery or caper at hand. Not to mention the bizarre shorts where he's with a DIFFERENT uncle/cowboy dog and his cowardly deputy buddy. They didn't even solve mysteries in that and the dude was a *cop*! That would have at least MADE SENSE. It's the worst of the HB fare that's bland and cheesy and lowest common denominator.

I imagine that if any kid actually loved Scooby Doo as a kid, they'd want an episode where there's at least a basic caper premise whether it's a mystery or something similar. A Scrappy episode comes on and you have a high chance it's NOT going to be the thing you like about the show and it's a waste of time.

Aye, I was still a kid when the live action movie came out and having Scrappy turn out to be the villain just confused me.

Actually seeing a child character get rejected and kicked out by the (young) adults and turn evil was kind of upsetting to watch as kid.
I kept thinking what Scooby's sister would make of it.

Scrappy Doo was right. Fred was a football player and Shaggy was in track. Nearly every bad guy was some old frail fart in a mask and he was the only one with sense to do what needed to be done without the physical strength to do it. Scrappy was the hero they deserved and he will always be hated for it.

This is a series that had the gang regularly teaming up with people like Don Knotts and the Three Stooges long before Scrappy. Same with Scooby Dum who was added years before Scrappy and is far worse/more annoying.

I don't even particularly care for Scrappy, there's just this really weird idea that he "dumbed down" a show that existed because H-B had to cancel all of their action cartoons because of whining of parental groups and then got toned down even more because CBS thought it'd be too scary for kids.
