The movie releases tomorrow so there may as well be a thread.

Plot:
>An adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.

I'm a sucker for The Rock, and from what I've seen he's just gonna be hamming it up as Islander Hercules in this movie, so I'm looking forward to it. The water effects look really pretty too, hoping they have some good visual jokes with the ocean spirit thing.
>>
Great songs, easily in the Top 5 disney animation soundtracks.

Dwayne Johnson as a vainglorious demigod is a joy to watch.

The chicken... oh my god, the chicken. They haven't shown too much of the chicken in the trailers but we're all going to be talking about the chicken next week.

The water effects are spectacular. Doing water in 3D is notoriously difficult but Disney really raised the bar here. You'll want to watch the movie again just to pay attention to the water effects.

The villain is Disney's version of Dr Frank-n-Furter. Its going to be fun watching people claiming the movie is black culture vs homosexuality.

Just got back from seeing it. Very fun. Great songs--none of them felt useless or out of place--and a solid cast, although you can tell that they rehauled the chicken at the last moment. He's such a dumb shit and I love him though.

I do wish that they had put more emphasis on the relationship between Maui and humans or focused a bit more on his backstory before Shiny, since the lyrics in Shiny ('far from the ones who abandoned you/chasing the love of these humans') weren't as poignant when you didn't quite know what Tamatoa meant by that.

I know it's kind of cliche to say but damn, that animation was stunning. The ocean looks like you could actually jump in and swim, and I wasn't even watching it in 3D. The animation in 2 sequences (the "I Am Moana" song and the end where Moana asks the ocean to allow Te Ka to approach her and she walks to meet her was so, so well done and moving.

There's a scene at the very end of the credits. If you don't feel like waiting, it's Tamatoa still on his back from the end of the battle, wiggling around. He halfheartedly sings "Shiny, I'm so shiny..." then says "then why am I still on my back? I bet if I was red and had a Jamaican accent, you'd help me up! Wouldn't you! Wouldn't you?! Ugh...." then flops back down

Where was the pig? I thought that pig was a main sidekick character. He was in the movie less than Phillipe the horse was in Beauty and the Beast.

I don't even like animal sidekick characters, I'm just confused why that pig is even in so much marketing when they didn't bother to put it in the main bulk of the movie.

The Pirates of the Caribbean world in Kingdom Hearts was fucking grotesque.
>>
Fun fact: In the actual mythology, Maui died trying to give humans immortality. He planned to do this by turning into a worm and crawling into a goddess's vagina and out of her mouth. His plan was ruined when a bird saw him go into her vagina and laughed. The goddess woke up, shut her legs, and cut Maui in two with her obsidian vaginal teeth.

I assume this scene was cut from the movie and will be available on the blu ray.

Just instead of "immortality" specifically, the prize is a "secret of life" talisman thing known as the goddess's heart, there's no mention of a vagina, and Maui actually succeeds and gets out safely, which is where the trouble concerning the main conflict of the movie begins.

>>
>>87879532
After all Disney is a Pro-Female corporation. They reek Estrogen fueled Gynocentrism. Honestly, will pirate this movie just for Maui. Moana herself? Easily the least interesting part of the whole damn thing.

Oh a woman must find her identity? What a shitty uninspired cliche. Just as overdone as Rebellious Princess who fights back against tradition. Women aren't interesting and much less are they interesting when they're written as Men with Tits meaning the writers pretend that women have depth to their natures.

If women were written realistically most women would bitch to the point the country will go deaf and most beta males would kill themselves.

Well come to think of it I gotta go,
Hey, it’s okay to say "you’re welcome"
'Cause I’m gonna need that boat
I’m sailing away, away you’re welcome
'Cause Maui can do anything but float

So the plot is that Maui somehow pissed off the ocean and as a result can't swim in it, which is why he needs a boat to get off the island where he was stuck. But the ocean is the ally of Moana, and she's basically a waterbender.

She's really cute and she actually gives a fuck about being a leader and taking care of her people, and genuinely feels torn between them and her thirst for exploration. She likes both of her parents and even seems to want to obey her father's stubborn curmudgeonly "muh tradition" stance despite it not aligning with her personal desire, but it comes to a point where she goes against his wishes because that would basically condemn her and her people to just waiting around for death and pestilence to overcome them.

>>87880657
I thought he may have played a bigger part at some point in production but, geez, they should have scaled back on his presence in the ads too. I spent a large chunk of the movie wondering if Maui and Moana were going to make a stop over at Moana's island and happen to pick up the pig while they were there before proceeding with their journey again.

>>87880695
Agreed. If it were up to me I wouldn't have kept him in. It's needlessly misleading and distracting from what IS in the film.

It's also kind of sad to see it confirmed that Disney's current animal sidekick characters really are so superfluous that they can just be cut out completely and the film's still fine for it.

That's the only thing that bugged me in the movie. Everything else looked fantastic--from the clothes down to the hair--but the skin stood out. I'm not sure why, this didn't bug me in any other recent Disney animated film. Maybe it's because everything else was so textured.

Same. I wasn't expecting it either, since they marketed the volcano monster as just one of the three bad things they had to get through to get to Te Fiti. The scene where Moana approaches her was so beautifully animated too.

The crab's design bothered me a bit, but he was still a pretty fun villain. Genuinely got a bit spooked by him when it got serious with Maui, and also by that first monster with the mask that was blown by the geyser.

Moana is qt and a good leader.

cross posted from /tv/

It was good. Better than Princess and the Frog which was Musker/Clements' last film. Better than Brave, which this film shares a lot of geneology with (no love interest, tough girl protag, based on more obscure folklore, etc.)

Great music, "We Know the Way" was my favorite number and the scene itself was epic. Maui's song "You're Welcome" is also good, but you can tell the Rock struggled through it as he is not a trained singer. There is a cover by Jordan Fisher and Lin-Manuel that plays during the credits where the song shines much better.

Also there's a cameo from Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Concords and his whole song and character is excellent. There's also a post-credits sequence that's not AMAZING but if you want more of that spoiler, it's there.

Overall an 8/10. I only go to theatres to see Disney Animated Studios stuff anymore, so make of that what you will.

I wish we got a teaser for Frozen 2 or Gigantic instead of garbage-ass Cars 3.

Over the past few years, I've noticed the 2D animated parts of most CG movies are really gorgeous, creative, and well done. I slowly started realizing it was all of the 2D artists going all out with what little time they were allotted.

I think CG animation has finally reached the level of matching the beauty of excellent 2D animation (ESPECIALLY with Moana). But that doesn't meant I wouldn't still love a 2D movie.

Clements and Musker did want to make this either 2D, or at least make the entire film with the paperman tech, but they didn't think that the tech could hold up with what they wanted to do.

So what actually happens in the movie is

Maui tells her that she, a mortal kid princess with no experience fighting or sailing, needs to just sit and wait for him to beat the crab and get his hook back. Moana tells him that wants to help, and that the ocean must have chosen her for a reason, so she isn't going to just sit back. He mocks her for it (basically saying the ocean is an idiot) and she doesn't back down, then ends up helping him and saving his life, and he apologizes. Also, shark head.

I was about to post something similar. It's just the familiar Hero's Journey.

Although I liked how Moana visibly and gradually got better through effort and was able to use her new skills to go up against Te Ka.

I don't think that was something as evident or even present in Kubo.
>>
>>87895836
Maui is a demigod, Moana is a human And Maui is an insecure person who was abandoned by his parents, and only gained support of the humans by pulling fantastic feats of bravery, until his last one made his name cursed by them all, so the desire to impress and regain the adoration of humans is a big driver for him, and when his power to be unique and special is almost taken, it's a major blow for him so needing help from Moana seems not only impossible, but an insult to him. It's not about gender unless you place the gender there. Sure, you can say the princess commentary is gendered, but it's more that it's a Disney meta joke.

>>
>that one dancing kid near the beginning
You know the one.
>>
>>87896025
Actually that itself IS the problem. Moana, much like how general media does, portrays women as Men with Tits.

You know women are intelligent, capable, etc. That is all Gynocentric bullshit for girls to eat up and for little boys to be deluded by until they grow up and see women? A shit. Though by then Disney and all other media makers would have gotten their money.

If Moana was written realistically she would have either died in her journey because women suck at journeying and taming the wilderness OR she becomes a moist pussy for Maui. Neither portrayal sells with the current Pro-Female agenda where the United States loves to pretend women are everything they've NEVER been. So that's why lies and propaganda get made. To keep the twats from whining so that their purses OPEN and merchandise can be sold. And if a few beta males also see the movie and buy stuff? That's bonus sales. Manginas are just bonus sales.

It was a very gender-neutral film in general. It wasn't 'look I'm a girl I can do things' it's 'look I'm a potentially competent person when I believe in myself I can do things'. So it's even more infuriating when people try to inject the same gender challenges into a story. It felt like a classic tale, a world where people don't care about the gender 'context', even as sort of a 'look how rebellious we are'.

I wish we didn't care about this stuff. That people could just fit roles of adventure or gentility when needed, for adventures. Heroes are supposed to be exceptional, why do we feel this need to bog down stories with relatable cultural expectations?
>>
>>87880810

Jesus fuck. You know why it's fun to watch a female lead like Moana? Because she's an ideal, a hero who is brave and tenacious enough to fight hard enough for her people without being swayed by her hormones like a shitty IRL teenager, while still having enough flaws to be somewhat relatable.

We watch cartoons for these ideals in the first place, they are attractive characters with strong personalities that you won't find in the usual shitlord teenage girl, that's what's so great about them.

Moana is a person raised in a culture that fears the world beyond, and cares only for the here and now, while those who dare to hit on cultural potentials are excluded.
The world is dying while those who could save it hide away and dance and sing like nothing is wrong and it's always going to be safe where they are.
Moana knows the danger, but unlike other princesses, she doesn't reject her culture to find that out, she feels like she needs to save it by going further.
She discovers her people used to be great explorers and inventors who traveled and galvanized on the bounties of the world, not hid away from them, and it inspires her to quest to save the world.
She meets a legendary figure, now spurned for his actions that he did to help people, and made their culture great, but via a mistake was scorned.
We find out abandonment as a child and a need to fill the world with things to be thanked for are what make him happy, but he is afraid of facing the monsters of the world that could take away what he has left.
The villains are all greedy, self-centered, against the notions of identity and purpose. The Kakamora are genderless featureless creatures searching for prizes and bounty, Tamatoa is vain and prideful of his small world of being fed constantly and glittering pointlessly in a cave, and Te Ka is just uncoordinated rage, missing the heart of creation leaving only to destruction.
When Moana is finished, the world is creating new islands again, and she leads her people to their cultural heritage and the ambition to explore and conquer the seas, like her ancestors did.

In short, the story is about overcoming willful ignorance and living only in the now, swarms of creatures lacking identity, monsters of external gratification in isolated bubbles, and corrupting forces that destroy what little safe places are left, to set out, bring back the spark of creation and joy to the world, revitalize her people's heritage, and restore her legends to greatness.

The only reason /co/ hates Korra is because she's more realistic. She liked bad boys, broke the heart of the Nice Guy (Bolin) and constantly messed up and typically got out of bad situations via the power of Bad Writing.

/co/ only likes stupid idealized bullshit waifu shit where females are everything they've never been. No wonder women don't care for beta males. They love their Wonder Woman and such. Speaking of which that upcoming WW film is going to be a riot. So many simps and manginas are going to go there and cheer for Feminist filth yet also claim they're against Feminism propaganda. Oh the hypocrisy.

I think that's my problem with the soundtrack. Lin is a hip-hop artist, meaning rap and R&B, but Disney didn't want to make a movie with a rap or R&B soundtrack.
The music is good, but it's not as good as could've been.

>Men with Tits

Is that not okay anymore or does it mean something completely different than what I've always thought?

To me it always meant to forget about gender and focus on writing someone whose actions, thoughts, and motives made sense. Are you saying people take it to mean writing women like stereotyped macho men?

Take the Terminator series for example. T1 Sarah Connor is my version of man with tits. It's just the same old hero archetype, but with a girl instead of a boy, and it was fucking great. Then in T2, she became the bad kind of man with tits. They made her a weird macho man, and that was terrible.

Disney makes animated movies for GIRLS and Nu-Males. So if you see a modern day protagonist? He's going to be notably emasculated and pussy whipped completely outsmarted by a female character because that is what is currently politically correct.

Man Dumb, Female Smart. Men can be strong....but their lives are useless without a pussy.

Disney cannot break out of formula. To do so would destroy their entire media making scheme. That's why all their movies in subtle or not so subtle have Pro-Female themes.

Maui did say something like "We haven't gotten along since I cut off his leg." So I imagine they may have had some banter between each other but I don't think Maui had a heartfelt conversation with him or anything--he probably heard about the gods taking an abandoned human baby and making him a demi-god, and it wouldn't be hard to deduce that Maui did all these things so humans would praise him.

I'm not that disappointed that the pig got cut (though, it's a pretty cute pig. it's cuter than the chicken). What I'm disappointed at is what that means. People argue that you couldn't make Mulan without Mushu, or that it would be a worse film for it. Cutting the pig proves once and for all that the pig was always unnecessary fluff. There's no room for argument over it anymore. Animal sidekicks are now officially unnecessary.

>Cutting the pig proves once and for all that the pig was always unnecessary fluff.

I'm not sure I agree... I don't think that because something is cut or changed it makes it unnecessary fluff. I think it means that--for whatever reason or reasons--it wasn't working in the final film. For example, in the earlier (and not that much earlier) version of the script, Moana's grandmother teaches her that her ancestors were voyagers as she grows up, and has her recite the names of the voyagers who came before her. This was cut in favor of the ancient chiefs suppressing the knowledge because of the danger, and Moana's grandmother showing her because she knows she is going to die, and that Moana is the one who must save them. Does this mean the earlier version of their relationship as unnecessary fluff? No, just that it didn't work in the final version of the film.

Likewise, for the pig, the original idea was that he and the chicken would both go on the voyage with her. The chicken was meant to be a more-assholish Sebastian figure, while the pig was going to be her friend/helper, pic related, and they would have a larger role. Then it was decided that the pig would stay behind because they wanted to focus more on Moana learning how to sail and figure out why the ocean chose her, and the logistics of the adventure were getting too complicated for her to keep track of a pig. Then the chicken was almost scrapped entirely before the writers decided to totally redo his personality and make him into an unwitting sidekick who helps out without even realizing it rather than an asshole who gets in her way by trying to make her go home.
>>
I just got out of the theater. That was awesome. I haven't felt this satisfied after a film since probably Toy Story 3. The story was actually original for once, and the film itself was beautiful. This movie had a bunch of moments that properly justified plot devices that most movies would just let stand.

Moana's dad seems like the same stubborn asshole dad that we've seen in past Disney films like King Triton in the Little Mermaid.

We think "Man, just chill out and let your daughter try it"...until we find out WHY he banned her from traveling beyond the reef.

My thought process flipped to "...Oh, that's a pretty damn good reason from a character standpoint. Especially if it's dealing with his daughter."

Maui? Is that you?
>>
do we see much of dem moana feet
>>
It's amazing the lengths Disney goes to for researching and developing their films only for the experience of being halfway around the world is ruined by how coy and self-conscious the film is. Moana's speech patterns...

>"That is literally the nicest thing anyone has said to me"
>"I mean... WHAT?!"

Maui's dialogue

>"I can write with a bird's beak... I call it 'tweeting!'"
>"You're wearing a dress and you have an animal sidekick. You're a princess."

The poppy song structures, it's exhausting.

And Moana pretty much is a Disney princess. It's not the need for a love interest, it's the personality, or lack of one. The same two-dimensional, outspoken woman with an adventurous streak. Boring.

I can't be the only one who sees how cold and calculative this whole thing is. And oh yeah, don't forget Disney's continued, long-standing issue of tonal whiplash of "funny" and sad moments.

Minor spoiler: He's literally too stupid to die, but never a hindrance to Moana herself, or the story. He's not exactly helpful, but endearing in his own way.
So in other words, Moana threatened your manhood so much that you pissed your pants in the theater?

Your problem, not hers.

I'm actually really glad we got Hei Hei instead of the pig. I'm tired of cutesy animal sidekicks.

I remember Maui even said something about that trope making Moana a princess.

With all the money they have you would think Disney could afford to make good commercials.

Trailers are hard coded to attract the lowest common denominator, so they're often shit.

It's a traditional nautical tatoo set. The chicken and pig, being seen as animals that can't swim, are there to ward off drowning by essentially calling on the mercy of God to save his creations that can't save themselves

According to my art appreciation professor the act of taking another culture's hairstyle and placing it on someone who is not from that culture/nation is an act of stealing. Therefore America has been stealing the culture of other nations ever since it's founding, even though America is comprised of hundreds of different cultures and the act of inclusion of these practices by people of other nations is somewhat similar to diversity and the sharing of cultures. My god I hate these fucking teachers who want to teach sociology and political sciences in other classes that have nothing to do with these concepts

A bit weak at times, on the soundtrack she gets swallowed by the bg instrumentals a lot and you can tell she's a 14 year old that needs a lot more work on her singing.

But, her actual voice given that consideration is great and will probably be greater when she's trained fully and past adolescence, and the good thing is they did boost the volume on her voice in the actual movie scenes so it isn't drowned out like it was on the album.

SA is actually pretty alright with Moana and Japan has a big boner for Hawaii.

China will def be a problem market though.

Gramma Tala was such a great character. Her talking to Moana as a ghost was probably one of the best moments in the movie. "Looks like I chose the right tattoo"

I think it's pretty funny as a bit of misdirection. The pig seems like it's gonna play a big role as the cute animal sidekick but instead we get this dumb as a rock chicken. I didn't mind it.

So apparently on some European Spotify sites (German for sure, again apparently) the English soundtrack is slightly re-recorded, and they say "Vaiana" instead of "Moana" (so "Vaiana, stay on the ground now" instead of "Moana") Anyone know a way to listen?

Disney has finally named a princess movie after the featured princess again instead of picking a stupid adjective. I don't want to discourage that.

I agree with:
>the world is ruined by how coy and self-conscious the film is.

I hated both of those Maui quotes, but especially the second one.

But I thought Moana's character was fine.

I generally don't mind Disney being calculating. They're a business, they make a product designed to sell, I consume said product because I enjoy it in some way. This has been my relationship with them for a while now. I'm aware that the product was factory produced and carefully designed to make as much money as possible, and I'm okay with that because I'm not expecting them to make art. I wait til they make a product I actually don't like to call them out on failing to hook me.
>>

>>
>>87909277
The commercials work because they attract the kind of people they're meant to attract. They may look shit to us, but we're all going to go see the movie anyway because we have word of mouth to tell us it has things that appeal to us despite the trailers looking like shit.
