THE OLD GUARD #1 - GEM OF THE MONTH
STORY: GREG RUCKA
ART / COVER: LEANDRO FERNANDEZ

FEBRUARY 22 / 40 PAGES/ FC / M / $3.99

Eisner-winning writer GREG RUCKA (LAZARUS, BLACK MAGICK, Wonder Woman) and critically acclaimed artist LEANDRO FERNANDEZ (THE DISCIPLINE, Deadpool, Punisher: MAX) team up together to introduce THE OLD GUARD, the story of old soldiers who never die…and yet cannot seem to fade away.

Trapped in an immortality without explanation, Andromache of Scythia—“Andy”—and her comrades ply their trade for those who can find—and afford—their services. But in the 21st century, immortality is a hard secret to keep, and when you live long enough, you learn that there are many fates worse than death.

I mean, that's basically a Wonder Woman elseworlds. Someone should really write a historical Scythian thing.

NEW STORY ARC
Abby's regained her memory of what the ULTRA program did to her, but whether that's an advantage or just another complication remains to be seen. Dean's abilities spin out of control, and Dr. Ostrander puts a plan into motion that's going to require a special kind of operative—one even Abby might not be able to defeat.

It's Rucka senpai, you should have expected a female MC the moment you saw his name.

So the Scythians are semi-famous for having women fight. Herodotus says that a clan of Scythian warrior women are the origin of the myth of the Amazons, and semi-recently the discovery of a bunch of women's skeletons buried as Scythian "elites", their warriors, set off another round of that.

I don't think that this is particularly a fantasy comic though, or if it is it's modern age running off the fumes of a couple of Scythian/Amazon myths (fun fact: the Scythians also brought weed to Europe). So it's very WW.

What are the most out-there ongoing Image comics? I feel like everything is essentially light sci-fi/fantasy or horror. I'd love to see other genres (or even non-genre) stuff crop up. Like why hasn't anyone pitched a war or western that isn't some stupid fucking rehashed horror mashup?

>>
>>87869141
I am straight up not a Hickman fan but the BMM is easily my favourite, and what I think is the best, of everything he's done. The occultism he's tapping feels more focused and more constructed - more in tune with a plot - and the characters so far actually all have distinct voices and sound as least as human as humans on TV.

I have a decent opinion of his F4 too. Very little else.
>>
>>87868865
You arent proving anything except that you are triggered anytime someone says the character being a female warrior is redundant.
>>
>>87869179
I still remember his as the guy who got me to read an Avengers title; also Secret Warriors still holds up. BMM for me hits the mark with the economic history of the powerful families, and how much of our world is shaped by these families handing down money through generation after generation.

If you read comics my point is in clear view. Most new Image fantasy titles have a female protagonist for no reason other than her being female, which is fine. What is not fine is its every damn new fantasy book that comes out. There needs to be some variation especially when its such a small genre.

lol, speaking in the passive tone and expecting to be taken seriously.
Also, stop being such a Sad Puppy about the whole thing. Was there a time when women weren't used to sell comics I'm not aware of? The first comics were written by women for women; when men started writing for men, they put women on the cover. Now, men and women write for men and women, and there are still hot chicks on the covers.
tl;dr history is cyclical; stop bitching.
>>
>>87869498
anon has provided nothing to argue against except hurr durr I'm not raciss stop oppressing me

seriously why wouldn't you make every comic in the world about female warriors?
If we produced nothing but that for 20 year comics would still be mostly about male protagonists

Semi-related, I really wish we'd get a Conan-style comic but with a more...feminine approach? Something like IDW Conan, where the reader is clearly meant to find him attractive. When it comes to half-naked barbarians, they could play with the female gaze a little bit more.

>>87870222
To be fair most writers don't really write a lot of female characters in genre comics so in that sense he's bucking the trend but as you say he ALWAYS does the same thing. At least give us another ethnicity of women or write about old women or a young girl or something.
>>
