I couldn't stand to watch the main production after I saw the changes in character design from the pilot (which had its own problems). Was it shit?

Eh.
>>
>>87848934
>Was it shit?
Yes.

Pilot: Bee is a bit immature, but down on her luck regardless of that.
Show: Bee acts like a mentally deficient womanchild and it impacts her life.

Pilot: The whole point of the series is that Bee is low on cash. Her apartment is bare-bones.
Show: The first show we see of Bee's apartment is it FULL TO THE BRIM with decorations.

Pilot: Humor and memorable dialog comes from good writing.
Show: Has a crab in one episode that repeats the word "cleavage" in the normal world. Has literally nothing to do with anything. Does not interact with the characters in an meaningful way Multiple pieces of merch for this character was put up on the store before the episode aired.

Episodes 1-9 were nothing. Episode 10 felt like Natasha watched Madoka and wanted to cram as much "lore" as possible into it. Most likely to create cliffhangers to ask for more money.

I have immense buyers remorse.

Just watched it.

Two thought's kept repeating in my mind.

"What the hell is going on?" and "Dear god I helped finance this."

It honestly feels like they were trying to be mysterious for the sake of being mysterious. And they acknowledge the Puppycat backstory established in the pilot for a split-second, and then go back to ignoring it completely. The animation and music make it feel very "Cozy" but the plot is unsatisfying as all get out.

And no, I'm not linking it.

>Natasha wanted to cram "lore" into it to create cliffhangers to ask for more money.

Yep, that seems about right. I think a lot of the original backers (myself included) partly put money into it because they wanted to see Puppycat's backstory slowly unfold and become resolved. And the creators knew that and said "I know! let's reveal nothing going off of that and instead try to do the exact same thing again by giving Bee a mysterious sparkly robot hand and then maybe they'll demand even more episodes again hoping we'll explain that shit too!"

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

We're expected to pay monthly for cable, and Netflix, and Amazon Plus, and Hulu, and then when we have time go to the theater as much as possible.

When a decade earlier cable alone was all that was necessary to catch every series. Now we have to join up for multiple prescription services and then pay the $16+ ticket price for a new release movie.

pirating is not the cause of the problem, it's the outcome

Why MN9 was bad? Probably because they over-committed to too many platforms at once and bite off more than they could chew by adding such a fundamentally different mechanic as having to tag enemies to finish them off. They didn't rise to their own challenge of remolding Megaman around that.
>>
>>87856740
They are not infallible but majority of them have been working long enough to be capable of spotting a piece of shit when presented to them. The problem is that sometimes that piece of shit is some creator's baby that they will never let go until it becomes apparent to all that it sucks.

>>
>>87857381
My screen design professor worked at Bluth studios at that time, from All Dogs go to Heaven to the closing of the place. He had story after story after story of all the insane things that went down there.

And yea Don took his name off each movie when it became apparent that it was going to suck.

The man loved his total creative freedom, but he was just no good at making a movie with it. He did not appreciate Spielberg's direction, but one would have to agree that the man at least knew how to make a good movie.
>>
>>87857546
it's funny how that's kind of all spielberg is good at. he's like a held-item in pokemon. you just latch him onto someone else and their shit gets better. the 90s WB renaissance wouldnt have been what it was without him. apparently he would go over a lot of scripts and tell people what was or wasnt working, and never let them scrap it in frustration if he knew they could still pull it out.
it really sucks that time is over
and apparently.. the reason AI was kinda crummy is he let kubrick posthumously ruin it with his input since it's kinda hard to argue with a dead guy's wishes. It doesn't take an expert critic to see Kubrick was one of those Ditkoesque genius types that needed a lot of editorial control to keep the sausage in the casing, so to speak.
>>
>>87857546
I feel like if executives in general were better in general at making their curtailing of creative freedom feel like more of a form of guidance from a loving parent and less restriction from a boob of a boss who's only concerned with the bottom line, we could have the best of both worlds.
Then again, if those executives didn't have a bunch of fuckups screaming at them every second about editing this and censoring that and making those more appealing to the chinese audience, maybe they could pick their battles better. On the other hand, the greatest successes in history have come when producers have had the clout to tell the networks to piss off and let the show do what you're 'not allowed' to do. Simpsons, etc.
>>
>>87857653
The way I see it, Spielberg is amazing at making family movies and kid friendly adventures. He is not so great at anything that is meant to be very serious or devoid of fun and adventure. His post 00's action and dramas tend to fall into this category.

But when the man has some input on an animated film for kids, you listen to him. If he thinks you are not doing a good job then chances are he is right, you might not have done a good job. He did not gain a garage full of oscars for nepotism alone.
>>
>>87849441
The pilot had bad writing too

If the show looked like the pilot I wouldn't even mind how stupid things are
>>
>>87857715
it's funny, I want to disagree with that post, but the fact is WHEN spielberg's involved, 'family' and 'kid friendly' stops being a dirty word
>>
>>87857680
It sort of goes both ways,

You do have the asshole that fell ass backwards into money and hired a director that made something amazing, and now he assumes that he was at least half of the reason that film was great and gets in everyone's way.

And sometimes you have random creator who is too married to their personal creation that they are not capable of seeing any flaw in it, even if there is a huge glaring one that is sure to turn all viewers away like poison. So they will never ever bend on changing it or altering a single aspect.

But these are both extreme ends of the spectrum. Sometimes a director needs a producer to tell them their idea is shit and change it. Occasionally they do have a much firmer grasp f what fans like and don't like. And sometimes a producer is a fucking moron that can only see toy sales and does not really care about the movie itself, and the creator has to find a way to make things like giant spiders work out in a way audiences would like.
>>
>>87857778
I mean, I believe in toy sales. Shit has to be GOOD to sell toys. Quality. cool in some way, inspiring, and fun. The problem is toy execs are even worse than TV ones, and they're also basically trying to get away with not doing their job, so they can blame the TV guys for not promoting their shit enough. it's a whole damn cycle of shit right now, no personal responsibility, no passion for your work.. and all of us would SO much rather be the ones in charge
and every so often, some of us are. the current creator-run storyboard-driven post-2009 CN shit is very much me. I've heard these guys, they're me if I'd stayed in california basically.
unfortunately there's a downside to that. No business sense, no social skills. When they get too stressed they don't suck it up, they crash. or they DO suck it up and then they have breakdowns. our cartoons right now feel very unshielded, coming right out of the creators' throbbing cocks right into our mouths.. but the desensitizing condom of the past kinda made them last longer
>>
>>87857771
It's hard to not like stuff like Hook, Goonies, ET, or Gremlins.

Even the kids in Jurassic Park were great. Normally something like that really brings a suspense thriller down to the dirt.
>>
>>87857815
This has been the state of Cartoon Network for a bit longer than the ghetto of 07' Most of the Cartoon Cartoons were creator driven with no tie-ins in mind. And some are great and some just devolve into whatever Adventure Time is doing these days. It's definitely not always great. Nicktoons have been down that path a lot longer. Especially when Nickelodeon started greenlighting a whole lot more post 2000. Before they got one new nicktoon every other year or so.

But yea total creator freedom is not always the best idea. Just look at what happened with John K. He makes insane things that go way past budget and schedule. He knows how to make a show but he has zero business sense and needs to be reigned in most of the time.

This gives Bee's situation such a different connotation too. In the pilot, the audience is more inclined to believe that Bee has money-management problems / can't find a job to satisfy her monetary needs. In the show, it seems like she can't fend for herself and went on a pointless shopping binge which has landed her damn near in debt.

She spent more than $50 when she was just supposed to be making a quick trip to get the ingredients for a single recipe. That she'd never made before. And presumably would only feed her one meal, or maybe even just a dessert snack. She didn't even successfully get all the ingredients. And she wasted a shit ton of product by burning it and otherwise fucking it up. And that was all of the money she had at the time, she couldn't even afford to go pick up a cheap emergency ingredient. And she bought celebratory gum for shits and giggles.

She didn't manage shit.
>>
>>87866343
Well then enjoy your bee and puppy at, the product of such thinking
>>
>>87857508
I'm not that other anon, and yeah that guy was pretty dumb if he thinks "fans of anything" are ever a good source.

But you're just as uninformed too. There's a ton of books, interviews, etc by people who have spent a lifetime in the industry who talk about executives wanting every product to be bland and safe, or screwing up an auteur production. It happened to classic guys like Orson Welles and it happens to plenty of people today.

There's no real reason for you to be so resistant to this concept, friendo. Simmer down.

Fanart and cosplay is a reflection of the franchise's popularity. It tells them that yes, there is a market for their product. It's part of how Hasbro became aware of the success of their MLP reboot in 2010.

Spielberg seems like he's great at collaborating and working with people in a team spirit, to build up each other's energy and get way better ideas and execution than you'd get alone. And making full length movies (ESPECIALLY animated ones) is an enormous task, so you pretty much have to collaborate if it's gonna be good.

And I guess Bluth forgot that rule of thumb, since "total creative freedom" sounds so appealing. But it's just not a good idea when you're working on something as massive as a full-length movie.
>>
>>87866714
meant to reply to >>87857546
>>
>>87866714
I feel like the best thing to do is to give total creative freedom for the writing-the-screenplay part.
then have a team of very skilled people adapt it into a real working product, BUT they have to LOVE what they read.. if they don't love it, they'll fuck it up in a bad way, instead of fixing up its little dull points, or reluctantly tightening it up to the things you HAVE to do to adapt it.

or we could just read screenplays. you ever read the one for TMNT4? shit was amazing. Despite it being completely text, the description of the fights seemed a lot better than the neutered shit we got onscreen. At least here and there.

I'm actually curious who decided to put in the anne-marie upskirt shots. Don or someone else?
Not so much for the factor of the character herself, so much they all come across as really forced when I think about it. Not as forced as The Chipmunk Adventure (although the mirror scene, short as it is, is the most blatant), but there's no reason for most of them, even if you're just going for realistic clothing physics.
I figure by the 80s, that stuff would be phased out.

Well, Deckard's drama with whether or not he'd be leaving for cooking school started in the first episode, the one right after the pilot. And in Cardomon's intro, Bee asks him how his mum is doing and he just says "Still sleeping. I'm your landlord now." I haven't seen eps 5 or 6 (I wanted to wait til the whole series was out and watch it all at once but apparently as a backer I only had a limited window of time to watch 5 and 6 without signing up for that service thing) but from everything I've seen, Bee secretly being a super powered robot just comes completely out of the blue.

There are truths to stereotypes.
>>
When I was a kid my family only had antena and the local station was so cheap that they never bought the second batch of episodes of any series so I´m not even disappointed that the show doesn´t have a proper ending, I´m used to it.

But what really bugs me is the mismanagment of post kickstarter web cartoons, Even before youtube changed the way that videos monetized that screw over channels like fredenator. The creators should have knew that they only had a limited number of episodes to tell a complete story. Yet they did nothing to actually make a cohesive story, I just don´t understand the mindset of this creators.

Someone correct me if I've got some details wrong:

Bee and Puppycat was a popular short cartoon pilot created by Natash Allegri, who used to work on Adventure Time and at one point was kind of a minor celebrity around /co/. The pilot led to a very popular and successful kickstarter fund that gave the creators money to expand the concept into a small 10 episode series of shorts, which were going to be released through Frederator on youtube. When episode 1 was released, there was a lot of fan disappointment when everyone saw that the original designs had been altered, see >>87869102. All of the episodes took longer to make than the originally projected timeframe. It is 3 years now since the kickstarter ended and the final episode has just now been released. By now, only the pilot and episodes 1-4 have come out on youtube, because at some point youtube changed some policies that really fucked over video creators out of money they were supposed to get, so Frederator now puts its cartoons up on some weird private app you have to pay money for, where eps 6-10 of Bee and Puppycat will be. But the kickstarter backers get temporary exclusive early access to episodes. So a lot of people who have been following the whole story or just like the show are trying to convince the few people who can access the new eps to leak them.

>>Bee is sitting in her apartment and she has her arm in a strange glowing box

Oh it turns out the glowing box is the dad box from eps 5 and 6. I hadn't seen those before writing up the summary. Those eps make Bee turning out to be a robot feel slightly less random.

Funny, really, I stop giving a shit when a show is more shit than not over five episodes anyway.

I might watch six to see the ending to what was set up in five, but that's it

Thank God I didn't get the dvd tier. I'd still be waiting on the disk. I'm thankful I didn't even give money to that disappointment of a series at all, too.
