>>
Kat is literally immune to ether bullshit.

Fuck me, I'll bet she could even knock Coyote around.
>>
>>87835177
is kat every going to realize that whatever she's seeing as the supernatural world isn't what everyone else is seeing?
>>
>>87835177
So whenever Annie is swooshing around the ether like a fiery ghost, she's actually just hanging out in a small room with a half-naked green guy?
>>
>>87835216

Nah I think this is specifically the device, not the ether in general
>>
>>87835205
Maybe she's a tier above the ether. That's why it all looks like cheap tricks instead of scary eldritch insanity.
>>
>>87835216
No don't be ridiculous. Kat thinks she's hanging out in a small room with a half naked green guy when she's actually looming over the ether as an enormous robot goddess.

That's less fun. Kat wouldn't even know what to do with a half-naked green guy. Maybe if he were a bird.
>>
>>87835238
It seems to be the ether in general

Not this room specifically, but Kat always sees etheric world as exceedingly mundane

Kat is one with the machine spirit.

Magic and heresy cant affect you if you dont believe in it.
>>
>>87835177
The elf being trapped in the arrow is represented as him with a sort of technological bracelet, while Annie sees a burning spirit in a maze. I wonder if Coyote would appear as some sort of plush coyote if he met Kat in the ether.
>>
>>87835177
YESSS

I just knew we'd get more Kat-vision ether shenanigans. Can't wait for the machine-angel to just solve everything effortlessly and deflate the fuck out of this climax.

>Annie, what happened? You were starting to worry me in here
>Oh, Kat, I don't know what to do! This place is like a maze, and I can't figure out to free him!
>*Kat looks down, sees a large button labeled "Open" on Fuckboy's cuffs*
>....Jesus Annie, are you screwing with me or just retarded? I don't even want to know how you managed to get that cut on your face in here.

>I wonder if Coyote would appear as some sort of plush coyote if he met Kat in the ether.
I don't think so. To go along with the pattern we're seeing here, she'd probably see him as normal cartoony doggo Coyote while Annie sees him as those insane ribbons of teeth and eyes and light in the ether
>>
>>87835453
She'd probably just see a regular coyote with red black and blue paint on its fur.
>>
>>87835257
>>87835177

I love Etherkat so much. I hope this entire chapter is just page after page of Annie being mindblown as Kat does simple things.
>>
>>87835257
What's curious is that she can actually see Annie's scar this time. I wonder if she'll finally see all the fire spirit hullabaloo, now they both seem to be going trueform in the ether?

>>87835242
It can be both. The ether is all about perception, as Coyote's showed Annie plenty of times. Heck, he even tricked her into mashing her thumbprint across the surface of the actual moon.

Kat may just be ethereally autistic. Inside this devicer, just as in the RotD, she only sees what she needs to see in order to do what she needs to do, and almost always on terms she herself is familiar with.
>>
>>87835389

She would probably just see him as he always is in the physical world. She is only immune to the ether projection bullshit but not to actually real stuff. Like when she met the psychopomp she saw what they looked like to Annie because that is just their physical form.
>>
>>87835478
Nah, he'll look like a big dog in a striped sweater. I'm calling it if they ever meet.
>>
>>87835177
>Annie's face in the last panel
Did she just get bitchslapped by the divine machine?
>>
>>87835528
i think this time se can see annie's scar because she used her machine to enter the ether
>>
Now in Boring-O-Vision(TM)!
>>
>>87835563
Doubtful; on top of the whole "lost in some inscrutable techno-prison-maze" thing, she's freaked out at the sight of some bug-machine big enough to cover the fucking sky. Realizing it's her own BFF is taking a moment.
>>
Interesting that Kat sees the cut too.
>>
Man, it's been a while. That's not the elf boy that Annie was into, right? I think I remember something about Jeane being into an elf boy too?
>>
>>87835682
Different elf boy yes.
Jeanne went down to the shore for some elf dick, elf boy swam halfway across to her then got arrowed into the riverbed.
>>
>>87835700
Shit, I thought Jeanne was the one that got arrow'd. I really need to re-read.
>>
>>87835528
in the RotD she was seeing things as they actually were, and what everyone else was seeing was illusions made by the RotD.

>>87835389
that's because a lock is a maze for keys.
They are both seeing that he is being trapped by a hard to navigate device.
More curiously the size that Kat's is seen by Annie is representative of her relative size of how she sees the room.
>>
>>87835724
So she's ether blind. The ether is like paint on canvas- the normal world being the canvas. Kat is "blind" and can feel the canvas and know all she "needs" to know about it, but she can't see what the image is, what was made of the canvas. So right note, Annie sees the painting, but Kat can't- though somehow sees her cut.
>>
>>87835177
Man, Ann. What do you have against lesbians and IT guys?
>>
>>87835238
Pretty sure the thing Kat made is basically a blinker stone that she's able to use.
>>
>>87836066
it's not all 100% mundane for Kat, though-- Ankou still looked like his big, scarecrow-y self, as well as other psychopomps.
>>
>>87835241
her mind deconstructs things into easy to understand pieces. for her the ether is just a simple mechanic like any other.

handcuffs and a small cell do the binding job just as well as an endless labyrinth that folds in on itself.
>>
it's still an imaginary space. it's an arrow, not a prison cell. so kat is still seeing something etheric, just the minimal amount necessary to understand it.
>>
So why do you think Annie is able to see Kat in her true form here but not when they were in the RotD?
>>
>>87836298
The rotd was some real location - albeit accessed through a magic portal - spiced up with ether distortions.

This thing is 100% ether-device internals. There is nothing "real" to see, so kat has no other choice but to tap into the ether. Through annie's mind no less, remember how she tapped her with that green rod.
>>
>normal panels in the ether
Wow, Kat. You are boring.
>>
Annie is terrified, she thinks is Kat looks like a straight personnel/thing in that form. She'll calm down once she see's it go down on the animal goddess
>>
>>87836298
Annie has only recently seen things no one typical see's. I.e. Smitty's strings. . only high being's see them
>>
>>87835216
The small room is the arrow trapping him in the most simplistic form, since he see's the complexity of the ether as such, it's a infinite maze. If he was like Kat he'd just think he was sitting in a room all this time
>>
>>87835177
Kat is beautiful and perfect and I cherish her.
>>
>>87835453
Kat would see coyote as a really derpy regular coyote and ysengrin as a really old shitty dog.
>>
>>87836247
Did they? I assumed we were seeing all the 'pomps through Annie's PoV.
>>
>>87836919
Ysengrin's body is actually real though, it's nothing to do with the ether
>>
>>87835285
She's more the omnissiah
>>
>>87836937
I mean in their Ether presence.
It occurs to me we've never seen ysengrin in the ether, but I'd assume to most folks he'd look like a god as well.
>>
I want to be part of the robot cult and pray to Kat every day.
>>
>>87836971
Yes we have, two or three pages
His face looked like a lengthy mask flattened out with scribbles tattooed into his eyebrows and mouth
i think

>>87835453
I don't think the pattern is that she sees through illusions, it's just that she sees things in a way she can understand
Like, the "seed bismuth" she might actually see as a seed, since it's supposed to grow, whereas people more in touch with the ether would see it more like that Beesmuth annie saw
>>
Someone make a cute drawing of Kat. I need to feel happy today.

Kind'a weird how the scribbles on his mouth in the first page isn't -in- his mouth, but actually covers it
Does it mean anything?

It also struck me that since Ysengrin doesn't remember when he flipped on Annie and tried to kill her, and said it has happened before, he probably doesn't remember when he flipped during the meeting in the court either

>>87835257
I just realized something: Both the ROTD and the Prison have something in common: they are human constructs. Build by humans to fools humans.
>>
>>87839583
Isn't everything ethereal in the Gunnerkrigg world a human construct? They seem to be the only beings with the imagination/faith power to create beings like Coyote.
>>
>>87839616
depends if you consider robot constructs to also be human constructs since the humans made them so they indirectly made whatever the robots make. such as kat's angel form.
>>
>>87839754
I think Robots are what's going to shake things up by being the first non-human 'race' to shape the ether.
>>
>>87839616
I meant artificially created.
>>
>>87839616
The ROTD and the Ghost from the water are INTENTIONAL human constructs.
>>
Kat is, at this point, OP as fuck. Technological genius who on account of not being very connected to the ether just sees what she needs to see rather than all the bullshit surrounding it.
I mean you'd think that last point would be a detriment, but so far it's been nothing but a plus.
>>
I was thinking about Kat's situation and now that I think about it, she can't actually be turning into a god because of the robots belief can she? Coyote's explanation is that when a dead soul joins the ether it's belief also joins it and that belief makes Gods and shit like that.
Now ignoring that the robots don't have souls and can't effect the ether, the bigger problem is that none of the robots have officially died. I think Kat was probably always that thing or something else happened that we don't know about.
>>
>>87836259
The handcuffs DO look fairly hi-tech, compared to the Doctor Who-tier props during Mort's arc.
>>
>>87841703

Maybe they're uploading their beliefs into the computational cloud, and that collective belief is bleeding into the ether?
>>
>>87841703
belief can cause gods to form RETROACTIVELY meaning that if a robot dies in the future it can turn kat into a gad NOW.

If you mean the guard bot, he didn't die the 'proper' way. He was simply a machine being deactivated.

The first organic machine to 'die' was a mindless bit of muscle. Probably contributed to the Kat Goddess thing but an organic with an actual personality could really spark things off.

>Although I guess we pretty much know it all already, now that I think about it.
If we go by what we're currently seeing in these past few chapters (and the RoD chapter) one could argue that the world Zimmy controls, with the faceless people, is the way that she experiences the ether - the problem being that she can seemingly make it more "real" than other people's observances, and/or that she can affect other people with this effect, whether she chooses to or not.

All of which we've seen already in some sense.

As far as I can get, she's an ether projector. Birmingham as she experiences it is probably how she perceives the ether and then her natural powers force it onto the world around her. I'm not sure what the faceless people are, though. Maybe just another ether projection?
>>
>>87844452
Wait, it's been a while since I've read it but I thought the protagonist's ancestors were just humans that ate and farmed other humans and the rats were all in his head?
>>
>>87844591
You could be entirely right, but I thought there were legitimate remains of giant rats within the underground graveyard/arena/charnel house. Well, each time Kat's seen a psychopomp, she's been flustered, scared, or repulsed. They seem normal to her.

Even after her time in the ROTD, which left her super-unimpressed, she tried to hide behind Mort when Ankou showed up. So the ether looks different to Kat, while Psychopomps look the same. Probably a good thing, if Annie decides to become a Psychopomp someday.

Well that is the thing. Coyote was created retroactively by the beliefs of current humans due to him already existing since before they created him. If Kat succeeds with her technorganic body for robot then he will be the first to truly be alive and therefore be able to die. If in the future all court bots have these bodies then they can all live and die which will retroactively give her divinity depending on how the robots see her.
>>

No, he was taken by the shadowmen, by ysengrin and the forest folk. In the forest he died.

The ghost and the green guy are the same person, the ghost form and labyrinth is just how Annie perceives the etherspace of the arrow's trap. This is Kat's perception.

The green dude himself is Jeanette's lover from the Forest who got murdered by the Court way back when, binding his soul to the arrow and creating the catalyst for Jeanette's transition into the murderous ghost we all know and love today.

Right? There's a stack of books by my bed patiently waiting their turn and there's just so much more to discover.

If you get the chance, I'd recommend checking out 6XH by Heinlein (also known as The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag, rather confusingly an anthology rather than just that story on its own) which is a collection of 6 of his short stories. I'd consider at least four of those 6 stories to be among his finest works and the other two aren't far behind.

Kat isn't seeing things as they are any more than Annie.

She sees things simplified. Annie sees infinite complexity that can't be understood, Kat sees all of the workings laid bare.

>>
>>87859590
As mentioned earlier, the RoTD is (presumably) a real place, as is the inside of the arrow. It's possible that she IS seeing things as they are since she's not very connected to the ether, whereas people who are see the place as a more dolled-up version due to ether shit, like a kind of vampire glamour effect.

I mean, if she's not seeing it as it is and Annie's not seeing it as it is then how does it actually look? Unless these places don't have true forms and it's all just down to individual perception.

it is different. Kat's mind dissects things into it's components and reassemble them in different way,s but her mind is material, not symbolical.
>>87864245
>she eliminates unnecessary entities
it's the human mind that creates unnecessary entities, she, being a sort of a god doesn't do that.
>>
So let me get this straight. Things in the Ether are more like "concepts" than actual things - there's the concept of the device trapping the green goblin but how that device is perceived is down to individuals, like with the rooms of the RoTD - there's the concept of a room, but to Kat it only contains the bare essentials whereas Annie sees a vast library (what would happen if she'd tried to pick up a book? Would it be unreadable as the timecodes were?).
Entities such as sentient creatures are also affected by perception (Coyote's bullshit, Kat's Mechaform) but have true forms that can be seen, such as Annie (the cut), Kat (regular) and psychopomps.

This sound about right or have I got it horrendously wrong?

>>

Diego didn't love her, he stalked her and was obsessed with her. He masturbated to the thought of her. When he found out she was in love with someone else, he conspired to murder her lover and leave her to die alone. He wanted to control her. Control isn't love.

That is a complelty wrong reading of the situation. Diego regretted his action up until his death. "She died and we did nothing".

he is clearly blaming the court (including himself), for her death.

It's around that time I stopped reading. 10 years later I was like, surely, she has managed to put things straight back and is back to being friend with her friends, right? Nope, almost there, but not yet.

Look like waiting for 10 years wasn't enough, but it was still a great Binge-reading.

>It's objectively the best way to read comics like that desu
Gunnerkrigg is written for print, so I'd say objectively the best way to read it is all physical volumes cover-to-cover in a row once it's concluded, then all the author commentary on Youtube

I'd say that's about right. It'll make a fine book series to read end-to-end once it's finished.

"No regrets."

You ever just looked at a roaring bonfire and thought "Yeah, that's just my type of girl"?
And then three months later she calls you on the prehistoric telephone and tells you she's pregnant?
There cannot be many men but the Anncestor who know this particular feeling.
