How deep does this conspiracy go?

The truth is out there, we must find it

Well, for one I think it can be indicative of a fiery personality. Also, bright red is a striking, vibrant, and cartoony color that works well for adding appeal in bright, vibrant cartoons without breaking into overly unnatural colors (blue, green) which imply that the character is either dying their hair or is not human.

Just as likely though is that it has become a meme over the years, where professional character designers are influenced by other cartoons where red was a popular choice for hair color so they feel compelled to toss in a redhead or two.

Red ink stood out better in early comics given the limited palette they were working with. That tradition got kept up and then translated to cartoons.

Good to catch an eye without looking unnatural. It's often seems to be reserved to either the lead or the most important secondary character (Leads don't need extra attention, they are always on screen)

That's the one. And IMO Nomura should just kill Kairi off. She's pointless. The worst thing you can do is force a useless character to be worthwhile because usually it's done at the expense of popular or other useful characters.

Weird how simple practicality on the part of animators probably created generations of redhead-loving nerds
