>Domestic Total as of Nov. 18, 2016: $168,645,877
What went wrong?
>>87803119
Needed more cowbell
>>87803119
168M for a non-super B-level character? Sounds like it did fucking fantastically.
Running some numbers, I'll let you know in a few minutes.
>>87803119
Nothing this is the best marvel movie by far
That's bad for domestic?
>>87803119
What was the budget for it?
Unless they threw Avengers dosh at it that's pretty good for a character formerly on the public knowledge level of Ant-Man.
>>87803826
165 million
I believe worldwide it grossed half a billion dollars.
>>87803897
Not bad. Certainly enough for a sequel.
No one expected Avengers level numbers. That's fine for a character who's never had a movie before.
>>87803119
Even comparing it to GotG wouldn't be fair given the timing of that movie.
It met expectations.
It's on pace to be the third-highest grossing MCU origin movie behind Iron Man and Guardians. That doesn't seem too bad.
This movie was good but it felt terribly short
>>87803947
only had two movies before*
>>87803119
>a film made back its budget in domestic sales, and several times that internationally
Nothing?
>>87804096
But if Suicide Squad taught us anything, it's that a capeshit film needs to make a billion before it's a success.
So here's some quick and dirty numbers, all grabbed from Box Office Mojo.
Since there isn't a complete third week for Doctor Strange yet, I limited it to the first two weeks for all the MCU movies.
Then I added those two weeks domestic grosses together, and divided it by the eventual total domestic gross (Ignore the Doctor Strange numbers, they're in the chart, but I removed them from any calculations.)
I added those percentages and averaged them (again, removing Doc Strange's since his % total would throw it all off), and found that the MCU films generally make 70% of the Total Domestic Grosses in the first two weeks that it's out.
Using this number, and the 2 week sum of Doc Strange, we can get that DS's projected total gross will be ~$233,827,474, which would put it right between Winter Soldier and Dark World, which seems appropriate.
It's also already made back its filming budget, recouping marketing dollars will yet to be seen.
Most movies did bad this year.
>>87804199
Thankfully, not everyone is as retarded as WB when it comes to movie publishing.
>>87804199
Suicide Squad was a shit movie, but it was a successful shit movie.
Now, whether WB considers it "successful" compared to what they were expecting from it is a different story, but it made money.
>>87804057
Pacing was an issue, mostly because Dr Strange's origin requires several years of training
>>87804377
SS was a pretty fun movie tho.
>>87804229
youre pretty good
>>87804259
Yeah don't you know SS financed hillary's campaign AND space exploration , just for publicity? They needed five thousand quintillion dollars to brake even
>>87807412
Thanks. I'm a business major so this is basically the only kind of shit I know how to do.
Here's a slightly cleaned up version.
>>87808387
I'm curious to see how close the final figure will be to that.
I dunno. I thought it was pretty fun and got the impression that general audiences would agree. Better than most recent capeshit in any case, both Marvel and DC.
>>87803119
Marvel is kill
>>87804076
The failed TV pilot and the straight to DVD animated one?
>>87804229
Good work, Hackfraud. There anything on their break even points?
It had the best second weekend drop out of any capeshit this year and the second best overall in the entire MCU, what are you talking about? Right now it's sitting at 500 million WW.
It's gonna make about 700 million WW at the end of its run, that's great for a solo movie with an unknown character and no cameo from an established Avenger.
>>87803119
it sucked
>>87803258
disneyshill already?
>>87803976
it didn't
>>87803978
that's a helluva slow pace
>>87807412
>>87808387
get a room faggots
>>87805319
Except Strange didn't finish his training. He's not the Sorcerer Supreme, he's only the NY Sanctum master out of necessity, and the eye/cloak did all of the major heavy lifting for him.
Idk where this idea that he trained in two months came from.
>>87803598
You mean "worst,' right? Because at least Thor wasn't fucking Iron Man warmed over.
>>87804229
Don't forget that theaters take half the gross for themselves.
>>87803119
Funny thing is, Dr.Strange actually DESERVED big gross, unlike ANY 2016 capeshit. Memepool was fart-fap-joke memepool, BvS was MARTHA, Ciwil war was MUH BUCKY, X-men was party of nu-males and bad CGI, and Squad was cringefest. And yet, they're more successful.
>>87812931
To be fair in the original Doctor Strange comics the Eye does most of the heavy lifting for him as well.
>>87804377
I still remember that Sony email where they thought a Sinister Six movie was like a two billion dollar idea.
Some movie studios are just batshit crazy.
In WB's case had they not butchered Suicide Squad it might actually have made what they wanted it to make.
This wasn't a summer blockbuster. If they wanted it to make more money it would have been released in the summer not the fall.
>>87812931
This
People are nagging that "he obly does the whip shit only" and "where is the magic"
If these retards actually watched the movie, maybe they would've kno
>>87803119
>>87803751
$168m is respectable for any movie on two weeks of release; by Monday it'll be around $180m.
However OP has made the mistake of believing his dollars have worth. As he isn't Chinese, this is incorrect - in one week in China, Doctor Strange has made $93m.
America is obsolescent. Don't get sick, yankee OP! You will die in a gutter!
>>87803119
The audience wanteda bargain
>>87804199
Not every cape film needs to be hot topic pandering.
Marvel is willing to do movies like this knowing they're a risk without turning them into demographic farming garbage to guarantee that sub-normer dollar.
Let the haters hate.
>>87813016
All those were movies with ready-made brand recognition and appeal. A movie like Dr. Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man have to work from the bottom up.
>>87803119
>>87813016
>>87813370
Nothing went wrong, Strange is going to outgross Suicide Squad.
>>87813517
For the love of god please stop, 50 cent shitposting is bad enough on /k/.
>>87813623
>Marvel fan starts up the company wars
color me shocked
Also, reminder that Suicide Squad made it's boatload of cash without China.
>>87813643
No, all I did was bring up Suicide Squad because it's the most comparable movie of the year (first entry for a non-mainstream cape IP). I guess you could include Deadpool too; although I think he has more recognition these days, and I don't think Strange will surpass it anyway.
>ITT: Marvel interns
>>87813572
>All those were movies with ready-made brand recognition and appeal.
Suicide Squad
>>87813517
Suicide Squad made more in one week than Doctor Strange made in two weeks.
>>87814950
>>87814968
Suicide Squad didn't make a single cent of profit. It's a huge failure for WB.
>>87803119
Nothing?
I mean I always assume trolling when someone says "only hundreds of millions of dollars"
Like there are mountains of movies that would have a fucking party if they broke even within the year of the movie being made.
>>87814999
you have figures to back that up?
>>87814950
MOTHER FUCKING JOKER!!!
>>87815073
>Another veteran says the goal is survival: "The movie's got to do $750 million, $800 million to break even. If they get anywhere close to that, they'll consider it a win."
>Movie made just over $700 million
It lost millions of dollars for WB. It was failure.

Highly religious people who refuse to look at anything with magic
>>87815139
But these people don't actually go to the movies anyway because moving pictures themselves are magic, right?
>>87815128
Where are they conjuring up these numbers from? 700-800 million just to break even?
What kind of business sense does that even make?
>ITT: HURR AY EM AY DUMB MURRIKUN AND THE WORLD ENDS WITH OUR BORDAHS
>Budget $165 million
>Box office $509.7 million
from wikipedia
you fucking mongoloids
>>87815156
Production costs, expensive reshoots, payment for last minute changes and huge marketing.
I'm sure they know more than some random anon on /co/
>>87815144
No they still go to the movies
Had a friend who used to work in a theater when rise of the guardians was still showing
The parents and their kids walked up asked if any kid friendly movies were showing
He suggested that
Parents started yelling at him telling him that he shouldn't suggest a movie that was so satanic then they told him to get his manager after that
You bring that up around him and he looks like pic related
>>87815208
Well I'm sure natural selection will kill them off when they're crossing the road and they decide to move into the light.
>>87804259
>WB top movie studio for years before Disney buying Marvel/Star Wars
>WB #2 this year
>WB is most retarded movie studio
>>87812533
>That's great for a solo movie starring one of the hottest(???) actors in the world and a Thor cameo.
t. Marvelshill
>>87815255
How many people knew there was a Thor cameo before seeing it? Lots of people leave the theater when credits start even after all the other Marvel movies, too.
>$168 million
>2 weeks
That's great! How is that a failure? The benchmark for a successful blockbuster should be around $180 million. Doc Strange will probably break 250. It's doing just fine, folks.
>>87815385
Can you post some Carol and Jess stuff for us?
>>87812873
27%
>>87812513
>Hackfraud
Huh?
>break even points
Kind of a moot point to me since we don't know the marketing budgets for these movies. We can guestimate them, but it's not really useful since we know that they keep making the movies, they must be profitable.
>>87813517
The Chinese market is important, but a lot of that money stays in China. It will still gross enough there for Marvel/Disney to care about not pissing them off, but it's why domestic is so much more important than global.
>>87803119
Ask a someone who isn't into comics who Doctor Strange is?
Yeah man, total failure. It's only going to make $700 million by the end of its run.
Has shitposting gone too far on /co/?
>>87805319
>Photographic memory.
>Using astral projection to study while his body is asleep.

>>87804199
Suicide Squad made almost as much money as Dawn of Justice without ever playing in China. That can be a very positive lesson for studios to learn.
>>87816219
>That can be a very positive lesson for studios to learn.
Or it leads to more Will Smith.
>>87815191
Suicide Squad was successful you moron. It's been well publicized as one of WB's most profitable ventures lately.
>>87803119
what the fuck are you talking about? They were projecting way less then what they made.
>>87816255
>every film but Mermaid is /co/ related
>27 of the top 30 are /co/ related
good god no wonder we are getting invaded by /tv/
>>87803119
They should have given the rights to Marvel.
>>87804057
What part of it felt short? The pacing was mostly fantastic.
Opening scene was good.
"Doctor" Strange part was good
The weakest portion is the early training segments.
Then you get him making fun of Wong, and it turns out amazing.
Rest of the scenes kept the fantastic pacing, until we got the Meme of the year.
Ending and post credits was nice.
>>87815265
Some theaters has the sanity to wait for the 2-3 minutes main credit roll to go, and let the camo roll, before turning on the lights.
>>87812939
Tell me how its Iron Man without telling me how Tony and Strange aren't both assholes. And even then Tony was a charming asshole. Strange had nothing to show for all his talents and was quite bitter even before the accident.
>>87816565
>until we got the Meme of the year
It's not that memey though. /tv/ is trying way too hard to make it a thing.
>>87815254
>defending these shit movies by saying they made WB enough money
wow, fuck off
>>87816656
Just because its not a good thing to repost, doesn't make it a good joke anon.
Its also one of the biggest things they did right.
In the thetre now. Which one of you fat fucks is the one stinking up the aisle? The two black chicks in front are using hand sanitiser every minute to drown out your funk
>>87803119
Fantastic Beasts coming out in the same month.
Pottertards were already howling "HE COPIED OUR SHOWWW" the day it was announced, but that was the nail.
>>87816708
>Harry Potter has a monopoly on magic
What a terrifying thought.
>>87816678
For the purpose of becoming a meme, it's very important.
I liked the scene, but it's not as good a meme as CIA/BANE
>>87816767
CIA/BANE has the advantage of being better than the entire movie that follows it.
>>87816146
DC drones have been on suicide watch since suicide squad and that exec meeting happened
>>87814999

I am just glad they bothered to learn from the better parts of Harry Potter magic.
So the movie turns into a great mix of Vuxia, and magecraft being very impressive to watch.
Ancient one murdering almost the entire cult with the terrain was really impressive.
