The pig is the son of the late dam keeper powering a giant windmill to keep the smog away. He has no friends and is shunned and made fun of by the townsfolk. The new kid shows up, fox, and becomes his friend.

I would suggest checking their youtube channel. They constantly update it with production tests and such.

I went to an "Moom" screening at Tokyo a month ago, Tsutsumi was there Hosoda too, very fun-filled time.
One thing I clearly remember is what Tsutsumi said about lighting technique for animation, "I don't like putting light in a film in post-production."
