It's that time again, because people have forgotten how to bump.

some kind of a topic: what would have to change if your comic was done in CG? I've been watching things lately that do a weirdly good job of translating 2d styles

Heyo /hyw/
I have a challenge for you all!
There's a ton of great webcomic artists here, and many of you are looking to become more flexible artistically.

So, I challenge you to draw yourself (or one of your characters) in the style of four of your favorite webcomic artists

Don't stand here looking at me! Go do it!
>>
>>87784058
Mmmm, no thanks. I just tried a page using Abaddon as inspiration. It didn't go well. Good exercise though.
>>
>>87784058
I'm already trying as hard as I can to mimic them... but maybe getting the wee details down would actually help. Hmm. I'm not GOOD enough to mimic some of them..
fuckin neat idea though. also you did a fantastic job. never noticed before how very Dan Avidan you look, whereas usually you've got that Kimura thing going.

I'd say focus on learning anatomy and form first. Once you understand that, you'll be able to deconstruct styles and understand what makes them individually unique.

>>87784596
the hardest part isn't just the style though but separating 'this is how this person draws people' from 'this is how this person draws one specific person'. and often it doesn't really apply. If your character has an accessory or an anatomical part or a hairstyle or whatever that is in a specific shape because that's the shape it is, it can be hard to translate that into someone else's style. hard to say 'this is how they draw curved things of this shape most of the time'. but it's a lot of fun figuring it out
I fell on my ass once trying to do a fill-it-out thing where you drew what your OC would be in every major smash bros universe.. too often it was too open-ended to decide. like what are the limits of a kirby character? HAL kinda draws all kinds of weird shit, including little humans.
somehow I'm better at this when it's anime styles.. even if some of those issues still come into play (how do i know how this artist draws my beard if they don't ever seem to DRAW beards?). Kinda proud of this one. but might be harder for comics. I should try anyway.

I've only read one webcomic, One Punch Man, but besides that I try to stay away from them so I can concentrate on my own comic.

Plus I'm not gonna copy their style as an exercise, I'd rather pay attention to their style how they interpret the world around. Thats the fun part for me.

Also if you wanna more challenging proposal how about:

>draw a scene from your favorite webcomic in your own style and try to see how you differ...
>>
>>87787629
That's less of a challenge.
The whole point of the challenge is to try something new and unfamiliar, trying to emulate someone else's style.
Drawing a scene from someone else's webcomic, you're drawing in your own familiar style. There's nothing difficult about that.

Rococo Chapter one overview,

There will be 52 pages (excluding cover) , 3 more page to draft and ink. Some correction also need to made for continuity reasons. Some of the pages came from before the reboot and was adapted into the chapter. I started the Reboot since the beginning of this year, and its been a long road from my perspective. I don't think I will finish it by the end of the year but it'll be fun to see it all put together.

>>
>>87793708

You're missing the point of the exercise entirely.

The point is to get you thinking about how other artists work, and how they reach the endpoint of a finished product.

A real artist should be adaptable, and should be able to work in multiple styles, with multiple methods, multiple medias, given different parameters.

It isn't meant to force you to copy someone. It's meant for you to see your art in a different way, and sometimes you pick up little bits that you can incorporate into your own style, and just to practice a variety of looks.

If you think working in one same style is just fine, you'll stagnate, and it will show in your lack of variety and growth.
>>
>>87793708
>stick to my own methods thanks.
This is the slowest possible way to improve. Trying out other people's styles won't just teach you how to draw in their styles, it'll also teach you how to draw your style better.
Why do you think serious art schools do so many master studies?
>>
>>87794339
shilling is the best, shill a lot.
>>
>>87794550
you're not wrong, but that's a pretty bad argument. Art schools are far from unimpugnable.
>>
>>87794381
>>87794550
Is it even worth arguing these things anymore?
The newbies who don't know better are easy to identify, and our small collection of artists who are just stubborn about improving never benefit from these arguments. Why even bother?

Good eye nonetheless. I wanted to draw a character that had the generic bowl cut that every asian guy sports at least once in their life, and Kaneda pretty much defined that in my mind.

Rum is a member of the Galactic Police (GalaPol), as a provisional detective. Earth is too poor in the future to pay him a salary, so while stationed on the galactic capital planet he lives off of space welfare and sleeps under his desk.

i love your little mouse guy.
You kinda see what I mean though right? because you've got this unique nose thing for your character, imitating other styles is like.. how do you do it? how would THEY draw that kind of nose? not like their usual ones. it's tough. it's kinda like ... if you make a simpsons version of you you make it yellow, but do you also possibly give it blue hair?
>>
>>87801568
nice bricks. am i following your comic? I feel like I should be
>>
>>87802216
Wait wait wait RIGHT there mister, the nose isn't a problem... the styles are imitable but i'm the one that CHOOSE to keep the snozzle the same bro.

Its not hard bro... i don't draw the nose on them because i don't know how to! i drew the nose the same to try and figure out how other artist might do it. the nose stays the same across the board...

Wanna see how it would look without the noses?

Oh and the hair is unkempt and puffy, you know how most afro if not combed would look. except the little wavy part thats just for fun.

Oh and in order from Left to Right

> It's Yusuke Murata : Well known for One Punch Man.
>Araki Hirohiko : Jojo Bizarre Adventure
>Akira Toriyama : Well known for Illustrating the Dragon Quest games and also starting the Dragon Ball Z franchise.
> And last but not least Eiichiro Oda : Best know for one of the most Longest Anime and Manga Series One Piece.

They made great works of art that got me thinking i can become a great Comic Book Artiest, Or Cartoonist and Hell even a Game Developer.

Working on a title still, but the general summary is:

The character, Rum, is a former cop (that is terrible at his job) from New Mongolia (set in the 7th millennium). He is nominated to be sent to the galactic capital planet called Planet Old Center as a provisional detective that is assigned to any human-related crimes in space (which are next to none, because humans can't afford space travel; the job is more like punishment/banishment than anything else). Then he accidentally gets wrapped up in a terrorist plot that is aiming to destroy the capital planet, and an arrest that he made prior to the incident is the only key to preventing doomsday.

It's a contained short story with a beginning and end that fits into an expanded universe that I'm developing. I've done small personal things before but this is a bigger and more ambitious step. Pic is another "cool pose" drawing that I'm peppering away at, all the crosshatching is a pain to do but it's just how I draw. I'm planning on doing a reduced style for the actual comic.
>>
>>87803499
whoa, so all that talk about humans tells me there's other things.. what are they, aliens? robots? mutants?
>>
>>87803388
Look em both up, you maybe surprised to know that this simplified anime style is very appealing to the eye...

the characters feel toony and move very animated (Ha!). thing is Oda's art uses cross hatching and excellent shading values to give his character a bit more "Umpf".

One is a quick learner he went from his not so great art on his webcomic to a nice style that he himself holds true against any other Mangaka.

So my thing is i dont wanna copy or draw in their styles i wanna develop my own by learning from the book and from experience.
>>
>>87803443
>you know it says 'hills' instead of hill for #2 right?

Yup, but I can't change it (or rather I'm too lazy to actually go into the menu and see if I can fix it)
>>
>>87803544
Yeah, lots of aliens. Like I mentioned before, expanded universe. It's part of the fun with space stories, and it allows readers to hopefully immerse themselves a little better. Dinosaur aliens, micro robot sentient life form aliens (one of which is a part of the story itself), gas cloud aliens, inter-dimensional psychic super beings (one of which is Rum's department captain), and a space yeti that is assigned as his partner.
>>
>>87803499

Thanks! Document mostly, and character designs. And vehicle designs. And weapon designs. There's a lot going on, hard to focus on one thing because I only have like 3 hours a night to draw as much as possible before I have to sleep for work in the morning. Vehicles are the hardest, pic related is something I've been trying to nail down. Fuck vehicles, though curvilinear bullshit perspective helps.

I have outlines for 8 stories. One is about space mafia, one is about Earth's safari, one is about Earth's oldest robot (set millions of years in the future), one is about a big nuclear Earth war, one is about alien refugees being marooned on a primitive planet, one is about a pleasure robot that is given the choice between military service or jail time, one is about a parallel Earth being blown up in the prime universe, and one is the detective story.

>>87803890
I'm on the same page as you. I'm an illustrator by trade so I see a lot of repetitive stuff and get it in my head to one-up it as best as possible. I am guilt of designing some aliens to be basically humans, so... yeah.

Well, let me throw in my WIP in the ring.
My concern is how should I shade or color this.
Honestly, I think I'm too lazy and terrible at shading to shade this so it would just be flat base colors, Maybe have the background be fuzzy colors.
What do you think?
Also, how bad is my anatomy?
>>
>>87804158
Should focus less on colors and more on construction. When the lines and anatomy are this bad, it actually looks better in simplistic B/W
>>
>>87804064
fucking sweet space hot rod. yeah perspective on this kinda shit is really difficult, but you nailed it

and i mean, everyone wants SOME aliens to be humanlike so it's fun.. you just gotta vary it up more
i feel like 60s-80s tokusatsu had it perfect. aliens can be guys in silver outfits, six-inch-tall ladies, dragons, giant bugs, weird oozing pustule creatures, cephalopods, robots, blue guys, horned witches, or a badly-superimposed energy gas
>>
>>87804158
hard to say since there isnt much anatomy visible yet, but I think your background elements could use more care and control.

Are you me right now because I'm in the same god damn predicament having little time to plan...

Anyway If you need help just ask bro, most of us here would give you advice. Hell i can give you books that'll help with drawing character, perspective and etc.

Design look Good! if you want some nice looking ships go watch some Space Dandy that show not only had great Characters (Who by the way could really help develop yours) but they also showcase some cool designs for their vehicles and Planets. Its a 20 something episode anime go watch it or watch some short clips for an idea.

>keep in mind that when drawing concept for character or stuff (space ships), it's always a good idea to know whether or not you'll be drawing it Multiple times or not

keep details to the point don't get fancy with the concepts: Front, Side, Back, Top, Bottom and then you can work with angles.

Thanks. Perspective was always my weakest attribute, it made it easier to draw machinery when I was like fuck it, I'm just going to feel my way through with curvilinear. It makes it feel more organic, and as long as everything roughly arcs the same way people accept it.

I'll GIS some tokusatsu for inspiration, it sounds like what I'm going for.

>>87804505
>Are you me right now because I'm in the same god damn predicament having little time to plan
Fuck! Right?! It sucks. I save money like crazy so I'm deliberating going whole hog and quitting my job in a few months and riding my savings for a year's worth of rent. Nothing but drawing, all day. I'm pretty young so I think I can still make wildly stupid risks and recover. No wife, no kids, no pets, no worries.

I'm getting the Scott Robertson vehicle book soon, hopefully that will help with vehicles. A lot of former college friends that are much, MUCH better than I swear by it.

My other plan is to take my Maya/Zbrush skills and just make 3D models of the main vehicles, then reference off of those. Save em the trouble.

isnt it just fagtastic how in the modern job climate you can't just tell your boss "can I just cut my hours and my pay in half for a while? I need a break but still want income, and I've saved some up"
the entire damn country needs to do that. then hire a bunch more people to replace the rest.. know what happens? more free time for everyone, prices of a LOT of shit would plummet, making that lower income tolerable.

This is nice art. The only thing that bugs me is when you do the close-up on the eyes and their face takes up the whole panel instead of ending shortly after the eyes, yknow?

Thanks man.

>>87804844
Yeah... I at least have a cool boss, if quitting and doing comics full time blows up in my face (99% likely) he would almost certainly take me back. Not many people have that luxury, which sucks. We'll never have a Star Trek future of self-fulfillment being the primary human drive.

I'm going to add a token background to all the lower panels, as well as adding small details to the back crowd.
One trait I need to improve is the ability to decide when a page is done or not.

>>
>>87810611
make the lips take up more space so she's squashed into the corner

make the background lines horizontal to emphasize the movement
>>
>>87810611
1, I feel like the princess' pose is a little static. Making it more falling-over and putting some twist in between her head and shoulders would help.
2, Making the lips more aggressive would help. Have them so close that she has to push them away with her hands or that she actually gets kissed.
3, I feel like it's a missed opportunity not to give the critter a silly expression.
4, Maybe you could put the camera a little behind the princess, so that the kissy face and lips get foreshortened.
5, At the very least, the vertical lines in the top of the panel are slowing down the horizontal movement and should be changed to something more dynamic.

No, this is kind of a first foray into sharing anything personal beyond my friends and coworkers. I'll work something out, I took a minute just now and did a tumblr but there's nothing on it.

https://bookofthegalaxy.tumblr.com/

Is it a good idea to have a tumblr strictly for comic pages, and another for individual sketches and whatnot? Like how do people present their comics without having readers dig through tons of non-related posts or reading things out of order?

Hi co, I was working together on some story ideas with some people online for various fetishy webcomic ideas, since it seems that sex seems to work well. But to be honest I don't realy feel it anymore, so I kind of want to scrap th fetishy ideas, and do something completely differant in my own. I'm just worried about telling the people I've been working with how i feel, since I payed them for some help with brainstorming story ideas and helping me with my writing.

Check out my webcomic, guise: http://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/keit-ai/list?title_no=36825

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

It's not that nobody sees it.
It's that you've been given constructive criticism a few times and your comic isn't very well written.

Nobody's gonna repeat the problems that were already pointed out, and nobody's going to pat your ass for continuing to make a comic when it isn't interesting, but at the same time nobody's going to just shit on you when you're at least trying to improve (and slowly succeeding) instead of willfully stagnating.

You have to make a real, focused effort to improve some area of your comic to get people to talk to you about it or just ASK people how to improve certain parts of it. Otherwise it's just not going to grab anyone's attention unless it's just outright good.

But, the next day, when he gives his review to the artist in the thread, he gets shitposted. It is the webcomic's alternate universe counterpart, which is desperate for readers, who too are blissfully unaware of its existence.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other marketing tips and updates in order to grant the other readership they need to conquer the challenges of their other selves. maybe more space between 'do' and 'we'
does skeggi need a box around her face?
It's neat seeing her take charge a bit.
>>
>>87818002
Yeah, I noticed that right as I was uploading. I considered having no spaces in Skalmöld's rambling, but I figure that would make it too hard to parse and the lack of punctuation gives a similar feeling anyway.

And I don't know that she needs the box, but I thought it might make her expression feel more like a punchline? But honestly I have no idea what I'm doing in those two panels.

>neat seeing her take charge
I hadn't really thought about it but now that you mention it, she has mostly just been following Skalmöld's lead up until now, hasn't she?
Ah well, I'll just pretend it's part of her character arc if anyone calls me on it.
>>
>>87818475
They're clearly tough in different ways, which is a great kind of odd couple. like how Skalmy has most of the obsessiveness over propriety and little things like that, but then Skeggy's the one that's going to be more pissed off about things being out of order in a more practical way. I've lived that scenario before.

This page actually took a great deal longer than I thought, despite being rather simple.

What up, thread. It's been a while.

Here's my situation, I've got about thirty strips left to draw before I've met my initial goal of making 200 sample strips.
Once I get there I'm gonna pick a top cut of thirty based on the strength of the gag and so on.

Then I remaster those top thirty strips and assemble them into submission portfolios for the newspaper syndicates.

The question is, how do I pick a top 30? I need outsider input and I can't trust my friends and family. I need a top cut from truly neutral opinions.

Here's a link, the drawings have come a really long way since I started drawing these.

>Inb4 "You're gonna fail"
No shit I'm gonna fail, nobody gets their first submissions published. This is the first of many strips I'm probably gonna have to build.

Between him and CF, I think on some levels they understand how stupid they are. It's why CF so desperately tries to defend him with the tripcode off, and why dewd never reciprocates.

For one idiot, he sees the attacks against the other as an attack on himself and becomes personally invested because the harsh comments ring true against him as well.
For the other, he realizes how shitty the other's comic is and doesn't want to associate himself with it.

would that work?

Well I decided I may as well color it in as a rough sketch.
To tell more about Lucky, she's a superhero. Not THE hero, no, but someone who ostensibly uses their powers for good. But her origins as a child star have made her into a delusional and jealous egomaniac that would just as soon stab you in the back as kiss you. Suffice to say she's a bad influence on young would-be heroes.

Cats are cute and I figured it would make the following dialogue more interesting than if they kept their distance.

Another WIP. Two things:

1) That punchline. Does it work?

2) Bearing in mind I'm just going to copypasta the background in every panel, I drew the music player in panel 1, but I think I set the angle of the perspective too high.
Should I go with something shallower, like panel 2?
Any suggestions?
The blue line was just a baseline for the character and wasn't really supposed to represent the actual floorline.

Now, let's ink.
>>
>>87864637
you used my punchline, yay!
I think 2 has the least distracting angle yeah. i'd go with that. but since you've already drawn it twice, might as well use both
>>
>>87864637
I feel like the shallower perspective works better. Personally I'd put the horizon just above the hem of her skirt so we're looking up at her for the most part.
However, I gotta say I think the dancing panels would really benefit from a non-static camera, to the degree where it makes up for the inability to copy-paste backgrounds. If you simplified the CD player a bit, it shouldn't be too hard to draw in each panel.
>>
>>87865314
that or do what I usually do and let her move away from the CD player as she goes

>I'd got a job
Should be "I've"

>take the world by the storm
The expression is "take the world by storm". It doesn't come from the weather phenomenon, but from the verb "storm" meaning "head-on assault", like in "storming the castle" or "stormtrooper".

Other than that it's great.

either that or 'take the bull by the horns' which might be the one he got it mixed up with.

One thing I miss from MangaStudio 4 is the ability to export a selection from a page instead of having to export the whole page.

I'll tinker with fixing the perspective for panel 2, but I'd just stepped into the shower when I thought of drawing the player head-on (panel 3). What do you think?

This is all digital so copy-pasting is super-easy.
I don't intend to draw that thing more than once; it's just going to be background after all.

>>87866415
a lich with a soul in it is just a dude

2 - I assume you mean a different Lich and not the same Lich? Otherwise it would just come to life again.

Didn't we discuss this all a few months ago? There isn't any pre-set Lich lore so you're free to make up 'the rules' if you want.

What do you do when you aren't satisfied with an aspect of your story, but everything has been built around it? I'm no longer satisfied with the trope of a setting that introduces all of the characters to each other. >>
>>87871867
Ohh I remember you talking aboot that
Yeahhh if you've lost interest in high school, dump it. Have you already started? if so, have the school be destroyed and have its destruction and the surrounding issues be what keeps everyone together.. plus imagine all the fun reactions people can have. Some of them would be stoked

if you haven't started it yet, then you're good. Use any other kind of group activity. Watch some other anime, some GOOD anime that you still like, and look at other things that can bring people together.. clubs, camp, maybe a different, less terrible kind of school (or college)
Hell, people can just ... know each other. I'm told most people have a lot of friends, though I wouldn't know what that's like.
>>
>>87872117
>Yeahhh if you've lost interest in high school, dump it.

I'm still actively debating it in my head every night before I fall asleep. The School was just too perfect. Dormitories allowed a smaller group of characters to be in near constant contact both in and out of school and teachers could impart wisdom (read exposition) without being asked (read forced)

I'm currently thinking of making it a college instead of a high school, leaving my characters closer to the drinking age and helping the fact that none of the characters live with their parents.

>>
>>87872753
I remember having done research on it in the past, but it's been quite a while so i don't remember all of the notes. but there are private highschool comparables in japan with what can be considered dormitories or other student living facilities. There are also a few economic changes post WW2 so I'll have an easier time writing these into a more believable form.

Funny how the challenges change tremendously when I have fewer characters to draw, more times, and am trying new backgrounds not based on anywhere they've been before AND intending for them to lead somewhere
either way I hope the conflict is funny here. I just wrote down 'conflict between Sasha's practical experience and Riven's book smarts' and tried extrapolating it. I really need assistants.

So is there anyone looking for an artist?

I'm not very good at pitching myself but I finally feel like I should/could work on a comic.

Here is a drawing that I did for a contest that I lost.
>>
Bumpo.
>>
>>87880648
Is there any kind of comic in particular you'd like to work on?

I'm not really in need of an artist, but it would probably do me a lot of good to try being the writing part of a duo.

Sometimes when I'm writing, it's easier to write the dialogue out first. Although sometimes it is a little difficult to write without using certain sensitive words.

Also I'm trying to give secondary characters some spotlight before moving on, so I don't have to revisit them.

Also also, I feel like I'm in a "blue phase". It just doesn't feel right to use warm, happy, fuzzy colors to describe the comic. I think I want it to feel cold.

Any thoughts?

Eh? What do you mean?

>It just doesn't feel right to use warm, happy, fuzzy colors to describe the comic. I think I want it to feel cold.
While it's by no means a necessity to have naturalistic colors in a comic, you can still use saturation to imply that there are non-cold colors in a scene that's dominated by cold lighting.

It's kind of an example of the opposite since it's warm rather than cold, but if you were just looking at it, you'd think pic related had blue shadows in it.
>>
>>87884405 By sensitive, I mean flat, outright saying somebody just died. Especially in front of a kid.

I could try adding an overlay layer on top of a naturally colored scene and see how that works.

Because it's good software for making comics with (it's what I use), and it's better to let people know when the sale starts, rather than after it.

I'm not being paid to shill it, and I'm only relaying this information after seeing someone else post about it in my social media feeds.

it's a pretty mild punchline. I would have combined 3 and 4 in some way (or 1 and 2) and had the final one be some kind of very political-sounding analysis of the way rabbits are stereotyped as eating carrots despite that not being part of their natural diet
and then something about how 'and they always draw us with comically long ears'

Okay so bear with me here:
>Two girls one comic
>two girls of nonspecific ethnicities have absurd experiences in a modern-day nonspecific city
>possibly they're in a relationship; the characters themselves aren't sure if they're supposed to be just good friends and roommates or if they're actually G-rated lesbian tumblrbait
>format would vary between single-page gags and unrelated stories between 5 and 30 pages long.

Sample story ideas
>Protagonists get a glimpse of the script for a future storyline. They think it's ridiculous and stupid and try to pass it off on someone else

>protagonists want to go to the zoo to see the newborn t-rexes, but aliens keep attacking

>protagonist gets in trouble after a raccoon garbageman takes her remark the wrong way

>protagonist keeps running into a bear that she owes money

>protagonist summons a shape-shifting demon to take her place at work so she can sleep in, but gets her ego hurt when it turns out everyone likes the demon better than her

Sample joke pages
>protagonists discuss the hardships of having to stay ambiguously-gay waifu material

>protagonists mock real humans for having to eat right and exercise to stay in shape

>gag about sandwiches is derailed by one of the protagonists being hungover and not bothering to put on her face before showing up on set

>>87891808

>>
>>87892496
Sure, cat girls are fine. I hadn't given much thought to the characters' actual designs yet, except that they should be hot and have different hair colors.
Maybe give her a haircut that hides where her human ears would be and have it be a running joke that other character's aren't sure if she's supposed to be an actual cat girl or a weird furry (moving tails or ears could be explained by robotic costumes).

I like it, but I feel like making her purple and giving her whiskers is a bit much. That's more towards "non-human" than "of ambiguous ethnicity". Visually, I feel like her hair and skin tone are a bit too close in brightness, as well.

Anyway, the other protagonist should contrast with her, so maybe something more butch and blue collar?
Someone Tank Girl-ish, maybe? But more chill and friendly to counter cat girl's asshole attitude.

Eh, its more of a complain about myself failing to generate meaningful discussion regarding the content of the comic, and often times people people will complain about the sock boobs because nothing else interests them.

I know it doesn't get restricted by the clothing, like it should, but personally I just want this particular girl's boob to have more... presence? I don't know if I am making sense. Since nobody else reads this comic, this aspect is basically just to amuse myself. Some had suggested to just draw them nude, but I don't really feel like doing that in this comic, although I do in other contexts.
