The movie wasn't about bees doing bee things, like say Bug's Life. It was about bees that are incredibly sentient and humans find out about it (somehow never knowing about them prior) and there's a big hoopla about it but they get over it pretty fast and then bees sue some people or something?

I remember it being pretty jarring and I didn't enjoy it as much as other people did.

It was extremely jarring. It's written like a TV show rather than a movie- a lot of TV shows open up with a short mini-plot that doesn't actually have anything to do with the rest of the episode, but ends up setting the real story by the end somehow. For instance, the main character may be participating in some big store rush to buy a lawnmower, but after taking it home and bragging about it he runs it over his foot and chops it off; the actual episode is spent in the hospital and the lawnmower is never seen again. Bee Movie does that, except it does like half a dozen mini stories in the space of 30 minutes, so that you're constantly learning about some new goal on the horizon which he then promptly drops and goes running off toward something else. By the midway point the movie starts to settle and stops jumping around like a toddler on cocaine, but by that point it's got a heap of plot threads dangling loosely in the wind.
