His series were pretty unpopular in general, as I recall.

For one thing, part of the hook behind the character, that he was a very important superhero in the Marvel Universe before everyone's memories of him were erased, involved retconning him into a bunch of past events, which was met with a lot of resistance from fans.

The other hook, that his nemesis is actually his own alter ego, turned out to not have as much storytelling potential as you might think it would. Usually it just boiled down to Sentry trying to do something heroic and the Void not letting him.

It kind of got fucked up later on, but it was cooler at the start. In the original mini, the Void was a separate entity that Bob more or less sacrificed himself to in order to contain it. The "void was always Sentry" thing came later. Also the original pitch for Dark Avengers supposedly had Norman's special friend be Mephisto but Marvel editorial said no so we got extra-evil/crazy Sentry instead.

Also the drug thing is kind of conflicted depending on which stories you read. In the original Sentry series there was a normal (for superheroes anyway) Super Serum that turned Bob into Sentry, but post-mindwipe Bob was a recovering alcoholic. Then in one story the Super Serum is stated to be the Super Soldier Serum that made Steve Rogers into Captain America, and in another story it was just a placebo that Norman used to control Bob by convincing him that he needed it.
