You've gotta understand that first and foremost Ankama is the Dofus MMO company. That made their fortune and is still the thing that brings in money. The /co/-relevant things you actually love about them, the animated series and movies, are burning pits into which they threww money because they were kings of the world and could afford it, and also because they believed a new golden age of non-outsourced quality french animation could occur.

But TV networks aren't interested. It's less troublesome to have yes-men companies like Marathon bring out cookie cutter products thn deal with companies like Ankama that push the envelope. That's why Dofus is a much less ambitious show than Wakfu was.

Add to that that the Wakfu MMO was stuck in dev hell then turned out to be underwhelming and not really bringing in new people, that their publishing arm failed, that their toys came out too late to have the show push sales and were kinda shitty, that many projects had to be cancelled or scaled down...

It takes its toll. They just can't afford to make their dream show anymore.
