Even as a kid I always considered the simplicity of a Pokemon's design endearing; especially compared to Digimon and all those other knockoffs. Usually you could just look at one and get the basic gist of what that monster was all about; they were understated, but charming.

Now, there is a point in Gen 1 here, because all Tripple Evolution lines end up like that.

Ultra Beasts are meant to not be Pokemon, this is reflected in their design as well. No you aren't out of touch if you don't feel they feel like pokemon, rather that's the fucking point of their design. They're almost alien in design, they're meant to not mesh with the other creatures. In the game or story they are treated as some different type of thing somewhat.

The thing about modern Pokemon is that they're fully animated, so they're designed to be seen in motion. There are a LOT of gen 7 Pokemon who look like shit in still images, but make way more sense when you see how they move. Toucanon is probably the most infamous example, while things like Moondog, Pyukumuku, the Tapus, and Alola Muk follow the same logic.

Just the art style in general, yeah. I watched the first episode and I'm not a fan.

The change from Sinnoh to XY with Ash's eyes becoming brighter was a pretty noticable change, but the art style of the show remained generally the same. X&Y looked fantastic from what I watched.

The new style makes me think of "superflat" art styles and I haven't liked the for quite a while. It's not horrible, but it's just not to my tastes. Not like it matters since I'm not a Japanese 8-year-old.

Removing the white removes what Empoleon is supposed to be in it's core design. The ridge in the middle is supposed to be a tie.
